Now, over ten years ‘clean’, John is on a mission to help others who have been sucked into the world of addiction.
In a hard-hitting talk, John will discuss his devastating cancer diagnosis, the impact it had on those around him, and how it continues to affect him today. Addiction to gambling can hit when you least expect it. For some, it’s a slow-burner, while for others, it strikes like a hurricane, overturning the world of everyone and everything around it.
For John Hartson, it came at an early age, on the slot machines in his local arcades. For 20 years it burned inside him, taking over his every move.
Hartson flourished on the pitch and reached the dizzy heights of the English Premier League with Arsenal and West Ham. But behind the scenes, he was floundering: battling an addiction that was spiralling out of control.
So how did the former Welsh international overcome his demons and claw his way back from adversity?
In this hard -hitting talk, Hartson will detail how gambling seeped into his early life in Wales, how it affected his playing career, how he faced up to his problems and how, eventually, he fought back to prosperity.
John is now on a mission to help others and raise awareness of the dangers of gambling. He is passionate about maintaining a positive mindset and works hard at changing lives for the better.

How do you re-focus? Can you reinvent yourself?
If you dare to dream and that dream becomes a reality, what do you do when the reality then turns into a nightmare? How do you wake up when you are against the ropes?
Consilium Sports Group is working with former European Golf Tour Pro, Alan Tait, who now channels his extraordinary life experiences to help others overcome their challenges. He has faced numerous hurdlesfrom potentially career-ending obstacles to family grief – using his winning mentality to conquer them all.
As a schoolboy on Scotland’s west coast, he dreamt of life as a pro golfer. Leaving home at just 17, he won a scholarship to study journalism and play golf at college in Texas. Alan realised his dream and became a pro, playing in 25 countries. In ’94 he set a course record at Carnoustie and, a year later, was asked to join the then Masters Champion, Ben Crenshaw, together with one Tiger Woods on a practice round for the Scottish Open. That round of golf was a moment in time and changed his life.
When you listen to Alan, he can transport you to the very spot where he was standing when teeing off with Tiger. His Lessons From Sport are impassioned, filled with the emotions of walking away from the professional tour for which he had worked so hard – without regret – to running headlong into new and exciting opportunities that help to shape his life as well as the lives and those he helps to support.
Alan Tait
Alan has managed golf operations for UK and internationally owned hotel chains and works with in-bound operators to welcome golfers to Scotland from all over the world. Still competing in Pro-Ams, he contributes to broadcast media at The Open, Scottish Open, Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup, and dedicates time to youth projects, helping to drive golf’s next generation. An accomplished after-dinner and motivational speaker, Alan is driven by being busy. His mantra? “Those who say it can’t be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.” His passion to succeed – in any area – results from that ‘can do’ attitude and being open to re-invention.

Her Lessons From Sport are unique, demonstrating how you can pull on your brave pants and surge ahead.
