Cuba, Canada and USA win on the first day

Toronto, July 20, 2015. Women Softball competition started yesterday in Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, with the dispute of three games. Cuba, Canada and the USA beat Dominican Republic, Brazil and Puerto Rico respectively.

Cuba 3-1 Dominican Republic Cuba won its first game on the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, after beating Dominican Republic 3-1, in the first match of the Women’s competition. Great job by Anisley Lopez, who allowed just one run in seven innings. Maritza Toledo hit a solo homer for the Cuban team.

Yuselys Acosta reached on shortstop error, advancing to second base in the same play. Cuba put runners at the corners thanks to Katia Coello’s infield hit. But Geovanny Nunez struck out Maritza Toledo and retired Yanisleidys Casanova on a line to third, ending the Cuban threat. At the bottom of the second the Dominican Republic scored the first run. Geraldine Feliz doubled to left, and scored one batter later, with an error by the Cuban pitcher, Anisley Acosta. Cuba took the lead in the top of the fifth scoring two runs. by Yariana Lopez, scoring Leanneyi Gomez, who reached first on an error by Dominican catcher, after striking out, and went to second on a stolen base, all with no outs. Lopez scored one out later thanks to a single by Diamela Puentes. Cuba increased the lead one inning later with the solo homer by Toledo, who hit the ball over the center field fence to score the security run for her team. In the top of the seventh Cuba missed a good chance to increase their lead. Yariana Lopez singled to left, and moved with a bunt by Yilian Rondon, which was not resolved by the Dominican first base, Yuderca Matos. Both runners moved with a sacrifice by Puentes, but Geovanny Nuñez got out of trouble with a line to the shortstop and a strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, Danelis Ramirez singled for the Dominican Republic, but could not advance from there. The last out was a line to shortstop to finish the game. The winner was Anisley Lopez, who threw a great match, allowing only 3 hits, and 1 run, with 8 strikeouts without walks. The losser was Geovanny Nuñez, who also pitched the complete game and received 5 hits and 3 runs, with 5 strikeouts.

Canada defeated Brazil by 6-0 in the first day of the Women’s competition at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. A great performance by their pitchers, who didn’t allow a hit in 6.2 innings, before the Brazilian offensive got his only hit of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Canada scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning, with only one out. Joey Lye tripled to right field, while Kaleigh Rafter hit a homer to left field, making the score 2-0.

Shortly after Megan Gurski hit an RBI single to drove in Jenn Salling, leaving the score 3-0. Brazil came out of the inning with a double play, when Mayra Sayumi stepped on third base and crossed the ball to first base, retiring Sarah Riske. The home team added two more runs in the second inning, thanks to an error by Simone Suetsugu at shortstop, which allowed two more runs for Canada. Larissa Franklin and Jenn Yee were on base, with consecutive singles. Jenn Salling also singled, which determined the change of pitcher in Brazil. Nilze Higa left the game after 1.2 innings, with 7 hits, 5 runs and 1 strikeout. Camila Oguiura came in relief, ending the inning with a strikeout. From there the Brazilian left-handed stoped the Canadian offense, keeping the difference in five runs for much of the game. Lye produced the run. The game was won by Jenna Caira, who didn’t allow hits or runs in four inning of work, with one walk and six strikeouts. In relief worked Jocelyn Cater, who allowed only one hit in 3 episodes, with two walks and three strikeouts. For Brazil, the loser was Higa, while Oguiura threw 4.1 periods, with 3 hits, 1 run 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

Puerto Rico 2-9 USA United States beat Puerto Rico by 9-2 last game of the day. The score remained close until the sixth, when USA scored five runs and ended the game by difference. The US team scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, on a double by Amanda Chidester. In the next episode the US team extended the lead scoring three runs, with a walk, three hits and an


Toronto 2015 Pan American Games error. Puerto Rico responded with a run in the top of the fourth inning with a double by Karla Claudio, scoring Quianna Diaz. While at the top of the fifth the third base Monica Santos, hit to center field to put the second run of her team, approaching 4-2. The work of right hander Aleshia Ocasio (3.1 IP, 3K) remained tied the opponent bats until the bottom of the sixth, when Ravaen Chavanne disappeared the ball with two runners on, by two more to let the Puerto Rican team in the field by the rule of mercy. US Jessica Moore won the game (4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K); and received the relief of Jaclyn Traina (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K). By the Puerto Rican team, lost Karla Claudio (2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 3 BB).
