Canada and USA still undefeated

Toronto, July 21, 2015.- After two days of competition the North American teams remain at the top of the standings with a perfect record, and tonight will face off in one of the most expected games of the round robin. Cuba and Puerto Rico have the same record of 1 and 1 (after Cuba’s fall against Canada; and th victory of Puerto Rico over the Dominican Republic yesterday), and today will play at 14 hours. Finally, at 16:30 Brazil and Dominican Republic will take the diamond; both teams have not win in the Games.

Canada 5-0 Cuba In the last game of the day, Canada beat Cuba 5-0 and thus remains unbeaten in the tournament. They were led by big offensive performances by Erika Polidori and Kaleigh Rafter, who hit her second homer in as many games. In the top of the second inning, Canada scored the first run of the game with an RBI single to left field by Megan Timpf.

Brasil 0 - 6 USA At the top of the fourth inning, Canada extended its lead thanks to an RBI single by Larissa Franklin, driving in Erika Polidori, with two outs. The left fielder reached with a single, and stole second base, advancing to third with a grounder to short stop by Megan Gurski. In the top of the sixth, Polidori reached on an error by Puentes, and advanced with a single by Natalie Wideman. At this point, Yumey Vega came in relief for Yilian Tornes. Sarah Riske sacrificed with a bunt to put the two runners in scoring position, and Polidori scored her third run of the game with a grounder to second base by Timpf. Cuba threatened again in the sixth when Yuselys Acosta took third with two outs. However, Maritza Toledo hit a roller to shortstop to end the inning. Canada added two more in the seventh with a beautiful 2-run homer by Kaleigh Rafter over the center field fences to make the score 5-0. The winning pitcher for Canada was Sara Groenewegen, who pitched the complete game and shutout the Cuban offense. The right hander allowed just two hits and two walks over

For Cuba, Tornes was the loser (5+ IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K); in relief were Vega (1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R) and Yanelis Rodriguez, who retired only two outs, both strikeouts. Canada continues on top of the standings with 2 wins with no losses, while Cuba awoke today with a record of one and one.

Puerto Rico 11-5 Dominican Republic Puerto Rico earned yesterday their first win in the Games defeating the Dominican Republic 11-5, with 14 hits. The Puerto Rican opened the game in good shape, scoring two runs on four hits, taking an early 2-0 lead. But the Dominicans answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, products of three hits and a base on balls. Puerto Rico reacted in the top of the second when Quianna Diaz drove in the third run for her team, scoring Galis Lozada. The Puerto Ricans tied the game when Diaz stole home while the Dominican

CONPASA Softball defense had a conference without ask for time. Then, Karla Claudio and Nicole Osterman drove in the fifth and sixth runs, closing the inning with a 6-4 score. From there, Puerto Rican right hander Aleshia Ocasio closed the door, allowing only two hits in the remaining innings. In the top of the fourth, Sahvanna Jaquish hit a long solo homer to center field, to extend the lead to 7-4. And in the next inning with one out, second baseman Quianna Diaz drove in Elicia D’Orazio adding one more run. The Puerto Ricans returned to the offensive in the last inning scoring in three opportunities. The Dominicans added an additional run in the seventh but it was not enough as Puerto Rico took the match 11-5. Ocasio took the victory with a complete game, six hits, five runs (only one earned), 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. The loss went to Geovanny Nuùez, who received a punishment of 14 hits and 11 runs in 6.2 innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

CONPASA Softball inning. Lefty Sara Nevins started and won the game for United States (3 IP, 1H, 4 K), while Allyson Carda pitched two innings with 3 strikeouts. In addition, the right hander contributed on offense with two hits in as many at bats, with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. The United States now has two wins in as many presentations, while Brazil couldn’t win in the first two days.

With this result Puerto Rico equals their record to 1 and 1, while Dominican Republic received their second defeat in the tournament, putting at risk advancing to the playoffs.

Brazil 0-7 USA The United States beat Brazil 7-0 in five innings, getting their second win of the competition. The USA team make their hierarchy count, defeating the South American team without trouble. The USA women scored one in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to an RBI single by Sierra Romero, who drove in Allyson Carda. The USA team exploded for five runs in the third inning, and defined the match. Both Valerie Arioto and Kellie Fox hit two-run doubles in this inning. The last run of the game fell in the fourth inning, with an RBI double by Carda, who drove in Janette Takeda. On the defensive side, USA pitchers dominated their opponent, allowing only one hit throughout the game -an infield hit by Mari Samira in the third
