ueridos amantes del Softbol, bienvenidos a una nueva edición de WBSC Américas Softball e-Magazine. Es realmente emocionante para todos los que trabajamos en nuestra organización ser parte de este momento histórico para nuestro deporte. El regreso a los Juegos Olímpicos ha sido solo la guinda que terminó de decorar el postre. El sueño se ha materializado nuevamente. Sin embargo, detrás de esta meta cumplida ha habido incontables horas de esfuerzo; un grupo de trabajo que pudo y supo encontrar el camino del éxito; y finalmente el liderazgo de Riccardo Fraccari, que no sólo tenía como objetivo el regreso a los Juegos Olímpicos, sino que además pretende sentar las bases para un cambio de paradigma en nuestro deporte.

ear Softball fans, welcome to a new issue of WBSC Americas Softball e-Magazine. It is really exciting for all of us working in our organization to be part of this historic moment for our sport. The return to the Olympic Games has been only the icing on the cake. The dream has materialized again. However, behind this accomplished goal there have been countless hours of effort; a working group that could and did find the way to success; and finally the leadership of Riccardo Fraccari, who not only aimed to return to the Olympic Games, but also aims to lay the groundwork for a paradigm shift in our sport.
Desde la WBSC Américas Softball no hicimos más que alinear nuestros esfuerzos detrás de esa idea, de esa visión, y trabajamos codo a codo con la WBSC para que el Softbol del continente americano sea partícipe y artífice de este cambio. Ese es nuestro principal anhelo. Por eso creímos oportuno realizar en este número un repaso de lo que fue el año 2016, con sus noticias más importantes, sus competencias y lo que nos ha dejado en la memoria. Para recordar los buenos momentos, para saber dónde estamos parados y para construir en este 2017 un futuro promisorio para nuestra actividad.
In the WBSC Americas Softball we only aligned our efforts behind that idea, that vision, and we worked very hard with the WBSC to make sure that the Softball of the Americas is part and leader of this change. That is our most important wish. That is why we thought it appropriate to carry out in this issue a review of what happened in 2016 year, with its most important news, its competitions and what they have left in our memories. Let’s remember the good times, know where we are, and continue building a promising future for our activity in 2017.

Some places are special and suitable for the return of Softball to the Olympic Games, like Japan, where the game is lived with a huge passion. For that reason, to start imagining the most important sports event in the world, you will also be able to read a detailed report on Tokyo 2020, their vision, their emblems, their values, and everything related to the upcoming Summer Olympics.
Como sabemos, el año pasado fue histórico. Pero el 2017 no será menos emocionante para las Américas. Santo Domingo, República Dominicana será el epicentro de nuestro deporte, ya que recibirá en el segundo semestre los Campeonatos Panamericanos Femenino y Masculino de Softbol, clasificatorios para los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de Barranquilla 2018, y los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019. Del 3 al 14 de agosto será el turno del IX Campeonato Panamericano, que además será clasificatorio para el Campeonato Mundial WBSC 2018 en Japón. Por su parte, del 14 al 25 de octubre se llevará a cabo el X Campeonato Panamericano Masculino.
As we know, last year was historic for everyone. But 2017 will be no less exciting for the Americas. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic will be the epicenter of our sport, hosting the Women´s and Men’s Pan American Championships in the second semester, qualifiers for the Central American and Caribbean Games of Barranquilla 2018 and the Pan American Games Lima 2019. The IX Pan American Championships will take place from August 3 to 14, and will also be a qualifier for the 2018 WBSC World Championship in Japan. On the other hand, the X Pan American Men’s Championship will take place from October 14 to 25.
Para ambos torneos esperamos una participación masiva, con una gran cantidad de países disputando nuestros torneos insignia. Desde la WBSC Américas Softball, y junto con el Comité Organizador de República Dominicana, estamos trabajando arduamente para asegurarnos de vivir unos Campeonatos Panamericanos únicos e irrepetibles. Lima 2019 Bruno Victor, Roberto Kenny, Ricardo Probert, Leticia Kawasaki, Michel Fennell y Allian Pompey, quienes forman parte del Comité de Coordinación de la ODEPA. La representación de ODEPA se reunió el sábado por la mañana, en el Hotel Westin de San Isidro, con los representantes de Comercialización y Broadcasting y por la tarde realizaron una visita a los terrenos en Villa el Salvador donde se construirá la Villa Panamericana. La ronda de reuniones prosiguió el domingo con representantes de las oficinas de infraestructura, tecnología, comunicaciones, transporte y seguridad. El lunes prosiguieron las reuniones de trabajo con los equipos de operaciones (Deportes), Gestión de Sedes, Servicios médicos y antidopaje, Juegos, Relaciones Internacionales y Protocolo. También estuvieron presentes en las reuniones de trabajo el deportista olímpico Ricardo Duarte y el presidente del Instituto Peruano del Deporte, Oscar Fernández. Durante los tres días de reuniones, Neuhaus y los diferentes equipos de trabajo absolvieron las dudas de los representantes de la ODEPA.

The meeting continued on Sunday with representatives of the infrastructure, technology, communications, transport and security teams. On Monday, the meetings followed with Sports, Venue Management, Medical Services and anti-doping, International Relations and Protocol committees. Ricardo Duarte, Olympic athlete, and Oscar Fernández, President of the Peruvian Sports Institute, were also present at these meetings. During the tree day meeting, Neuhaus and his committee members were able to clarify all the concerns put forward by PASO representatives.

l año 2016 quedará grabado en la historia de nuestro deporte, ya que marcó el regreso del Softbol al Programa Oficial de los Juegos Olímpicos. Una noticia largamente esperada y tan anhelada por el Softbol mundial (ver página 26). Por otro lado, la Confederación Mundial de Béisbol y Softbol anunció por primera vez el Ranking Mundial WBSC de Sóftbol Masculino y Femenino, con la suma de puntos en los últimos dos campeonatos mundiales adultos y los últimos dos campeonatos Junior. Además, hubo una intensa actividad en el continente americano, no sólo con competencias ecuménicas sino también con eventos regionales, que mostraron una vez más que en nuestro continente

el Sóftbol se vive como en ninguna otra parte.
Campeonatos Mundiales Como cada año, en 2016 se disputaron dos competencias mundiales, en las categorías Femenino Mayor y Masculino Juvenil. Surrey, B.C. Canadá, recibió al mundo en julio del año pasado, cuando 30 países se dieron cita para disputar el XV Campeonato Mundial Femenino WBSC, estableciendo un nuevo récord de participación en un evento global. Diez países del continente americano estuvieron presentes en este Mundial, con el debut de Brasil, Ecuador y Perú en esta clase de competencias.

ast year will be recorded in the history book of our sport, as it marked the return of Softball to the Olympic Games Official Program. A long awaited and so craved announcement by the world of Softball (see page 26). On the other hand, the World Baseball and Softball Confederation announced for the first time the WBSC World Ranking of Men’s and Women’s Softball, with the sum of points in the last two adult world championships and the last two Junior Championships. In addition, there was intense activity in the American continent, not only with ecumenical competitions but also
with regional events, which showed once again that in our continent Softball is lived like nowhere else.
World Championships Like every year, two world competitions were held in 2016, in the Senior Women and Junior Men categories. Surrey, BC, Canada, welcomed the world in July of last year where 30 countries came together to play at the XV WBSC Women’s World Championship, setting a new record of participation in a global event. Ten countries of the American continent were present in this World Championship,

Cabe mencionar que desde 2002 hasta hoy, Japón y Estados Unidos han disputado todas las finales de campeonatos mundiales, cuatro triunfos para las americanas y dos para las asiáticas El podio lo completó otro equipo de nuestro continente: Canadá, que se colgó una medalla por tercera vez en su historia. Además, México (5°), Venezuela (6°) y Puerto Rico (9°) se ubicaron en el “top ten”; mientras que Brasil (11°), Cuba (15°), Guatemala (20°), Perú (21°) y Ecuador (22°) completaron los par-
ticipantes americanos en la competencia. Por su parte, Midland Michigan fue la sede del XI Campeonato Mundial Masculino Juvenil, con cuatro países americanos en el torneo, tres de ellos ubicados en el “top five” de la competencia. Canadá se subió al podio en el tercer lugar, luego de vencer a Argentina por 5-1. El equipo sudamericano, luego de consagrarse campeón mundial de la categoría en el 2012 y 2014, esta vez finalizó en la cuarta colocación. El “top five” lo completó Estados Unidos, en condición de local. El otro equipo de nuestro continente que participó en el Mundial fue México, que clasificó a los “playoffs” pero quedó eliminado ante Australia, luego de perder por 5-1.

2016 In Review Campeonatos Sudamericanos En el cono sur también hubo una gran actividad en el 2016, con la disputa de los Campeonatos Sudamericanos Femenino y Masculino en Colombia y Panamá respectivamente. Además, también hubo actividad en las categorías Sub 15 y Sub 18 Femeninas, en Perú y Colombia. Con la participación de cinco países, Colombia se quedó con el Campeonato Sudamericano Femenino, superando en la final a Brasil por 4-2. El podio lo completó Argentina, mientras que Panamá y Venezuela completaron la tabla final. En el caso de los hombres, Argentina se quedó con el
título, luego de vencer en la final a Venezuela por 2-0. En tercer lugar se ubicó Panamá A, y en cuarto Colombia. Este torneo contó con la participación, luego de muchos años de ausencia, de Perú, que prepara su equipo para los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019. También participaron Ecuador, Panamá B y Argentina B. Por su parte, se disputó en Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, el Sudamericano Femenino Sub 18, donde se consagró campeón Brasil, venciendo en la final a México por 4-3. Seis equipos participaron, incluyendo al equipo azteca que lo hizo en carácter de invitado. En tercer lugar finalizó Argentina y en cuarto Perú. Fuera de los “playoffs” terminaron Colombia y Aruba.

South American Championships
On the Men’s side, Argentina was crowned as champion, beating Venezuela in the final by 2-0. Panama A finished in third place and Colombia in fourth place. This tournament had the participation of Peru, after many years of absence, in preparation to host the Pan American Games in Lima 2019. Ecuador, Panama B and Argentina B also participated in the event.
In the Southern hemisphere there was also a great activity in 2016, with the dispute of the Women’s and Men’s South American Championships in Colombia and Panama, respectively. In addition, there was also activity in the U15 and U18 Female Youth categories, in Peru and Colombia. With the participation of five countries, Colombia won the Women’s South American Championship, beating Brazil by 4-2 in the final. Joining them on the podium was Argentina, while Panama

Campeonatos Centroamericanos En la región centroamericana también hubo intensa actividad. En la categoría Masculino Mayor, Guatemala se consagró campeón centroamericano en San Pedro Sula, Honduras, luego de dejar en el terreno a Panamá con un agónico resultado de 8-7. En tercer lugar finalizó Honduras, mientras que en la cuarta 16

posición terminó El Salvador. Además, el torneo contó con la participación de Costa Rica y Nicaragua, que cerraron la tabla de posiciones. En la rama Femenina, en un duelo a muerte por el cetro de la región, El Salvador se quedó con el título Centroamericano Mayor, luego de vencer en la gran final a Guatemala por 5-3. La edición XVI de este campeonato se celebró entre el 25 y 27 de noviembre en los Diamantes de Vista Hermosa, donde participaron Costa Rica, Belice, Panamá, Nicaragua, El Salvador y el anfitrión, Guatemala. Por su parte, en la categoría Masculino Sub19, El Salvador se coronó campeón centroamericano luego de vencer en la final a Guatemala por 10-5. El torneo se

Finally, in the U15 Female Youth tournament held in Chincha, Peru, Brazil was the champion, after defeating Argentina by 1-0 in the final. Peru Red, Peru White, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador also participated. The novelty of the competition was the participation of the Chilean team (as a guest team) in an international competition.
Central American Championships In the Central American region there was also intense activity. In the Senior Men’s category, Guatemala became the Central American
champion in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, beating Panama with an agonizing 8-7 result. Honduras finished in third place, while the fourth place went to El Salvador. In addition, the tournament was attended by Costa Rica and Nicaragua, who closed the standings. On the Women’s side, El Salvador claimed the Central American title, defeating Guatemala in the final by 5-3. The XVI edition of this championship was held in November on the Diamonds of Vista Hermosa, with the participation of Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador and the host Guatemala. World Rankings
The new methodology for the WBSC Softball World Rankings takes into consideration the results from the last 4-year cycle (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) in official WBSC sanctioned National Team competitions. This ranking system promotes the competition at ALL levels and ages. The qualifiers for the Softball World Championships will now be granted world points, beginning with the 2017.
The World Baseball Softball Confederation launched last year the first-ever world rankings for Softball, across both Men’s and Women’s disciplines. The newly implemented world ranking system tracks the performance of a country’s National Team in the Softball World Championships, including junior and top-tier levels. Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania were all represented in the Women’s Top 10, highlighting a universal footprint of the sport.

- Como bien dices, el regreso a los Juegos Olímpicos ha sido un hito histórico para nuestro deporte.
- Este ha sido sin dudas un año histórico para nuestro deporte, a nivel global y a nivel continental. En agosto recibimos la noticia de que el Softbol volverá a ser olímpico en 2020, lo que ha sido un logro muy importante de parte de la WBSC. Esto repercute directamente en el desarrollo de nuestro deporte en todos los rincones del mundo, y especialmente en nuestro continente, donde se vive y se respira el Softbol de norte a sur. Además, la competencia a

The President of WBSC Softball Americas, Puerto Rican Tommy Velazquez, tells us his vision about last year, and what awaits our sport in the immediate future. - What is your balance of 2016? - This has been undoubtedly a historic year for our sport, at a global and continental level. In August we received the confirmation that Softball will be an Olympic sport again in 2020, which has been a very important achievement of the WBSC. This has a direct impact on the development of our sport in every corner of the world, and especially in our continent, where we live and breathe Softball from north to south. In addition, we enjoyed great
competition at a regional level, with tournaments in South America and Central America in several categories. This shows us that Softball is going through brilliant times in the Americas. - As you said, the return to the Olympic Games has been a historic milestone for our sport. - Yes, no doubt. As WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari already said, this was an unforgettable year for all of us. But it is also the beginning of a long road to Tokyo 2020, with the responsibility of continuing to work so that Softball stays in the Games beyond this edition. The road will be long, but we must face it with much optimism, with intelligence and with work. Only that

Solo de esa manera nos mantendremos en el lugar que merecemos. - Cuéntanos cómo viviste el proceso previo a la decisión tomada en Río. - Fueron muchos meses de trabajo. Realmente el esfuerzo que se hizo desde la WBSC, con el Presidente Fraccari a la cabeza, fue descomunal. Luego de la votación en Buenos Aires, donde Béisbol / Softbol perdió en la votación con la Lucha por regresar a los Juegos, el Comité Olímpico Internacional nos abrió una oportunidad con la Agenda 2020. Por eso, más allá
del mal sabor de boca que nos quedó por no haber logrado el objetivo en 2013, seguimos trabajando con el mismo entusiasmo y con la misma pasión, lo que finalmente nos dio sus frutos. Debo mencionar que esto no hubiera sido posible sin la visión del Presidente del COI, Thomas Bach, y sin el liderazgo de Riccardo al frente de nuestro deporte. Este año que está iniciando será muy arduo, ya que tendremos los dos Campeonatos Panamericanos (Femenino y Masculino), que servirán también como clasificatorios para los Juegos multideportivos de los próximos años: los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe Barranquilla 2018 y los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019. Por lo que el 2017 será trascendental para los países de nuestro continente.

On the one hand, we want to shine in Tokyo 2020, to demonstrate that we belong in the Olympic program and that the decision was correct. But on the other hand we need to continue working with the IOC, since Softball has its place secured only for the Games of 2020, and not beyond. That is why the goal is to organize the best Softball tournament in history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and at the same time continue to convince IOC members that our sport has much to contribute to the Olympic Movement and deserves to remain in the Olympic Program. - Among the important moments of the year we can also mention
the WBSC Softball Americas Assembly, in Valencia. What does it mean to be elected President for the next four years? - For us it was very important, because it’s a way to confirm the confidence of the countries of our continent, and at the same time to renew the illusion for the future. We believe that the American continent must have a leadership position at the global level, and that’s why we must improve in every way. This year will be very arduous, since we will have the two Pan American Championships (Women and Men), which will also serve as qualifiers for the multi-sport Games of the coming years: the Central American and Caribbean Games Barranquilla 2018 and the Pan American Games Lima 2019. So, 2017 will be crucial for the countries of our continent.

- ¿Cómo seguirá el trabajo este año? - Como mencioné, desde la WBSC Softbol Américas ya estamos trabajando duro para los dos clasificatorios de este año en República Dominicana. Son nuestras competencias emblemáticas y por ello estamos buscando lo mejor. Trataremos de fomentar la mayor participación posible en ambos eventos. Por ello hemos agrupado la clasificación a los dos Juegos en un mismo torneo, para sumar participantes y para bajar los costos de nuestros países, que de este modo sólo tendrán que viajar una sola vez a buscar su lugar en Barranquilla 2018 y en Lima 2019. Ya hemos realizado la presentación del Campeonato Panamericano Masculino en República Dominicana, con la visita de la Comisión Técnica que supervisó las instalaciones y el desarrollo de la organización, que viene siendo excelente, por lo
que seguiremos trabajando por este camino. Estamos seguros de que serán un éxito. Por otro lado, ya estamos organizando la Asamblea de la WBSC Softbol Américas en Botsuana, en octubre, aprovechando el Congreso Mundial de Béisbol y Softbol de la WBSC, que se realizará en este país de África. Allí estarán presentes la mayoría de los países del continente, por lo que aprovecharemos la ocasión para reunirnos. Finalmente, seguiremos trabajando codo a codo con el Comité Organizador de los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019, para que volvamos a vivir una fiesta inolvidable, como la que vivimos en Toronto. Personalmente he viajado a Lima el año pasado para seguir de cerca la organización de los Juegos, y seguramente continuaremos haciéndolo en los próximos meses.
- How will the work continue this year? - As I mentioned, the WBSC Softball Americas is already working hard for the two qualifiers this year, to be held in the Dominican Republic. These are our emblematic competitions and we are looking for the best. We will try to encourage as much participation as possible in both events. That is why we have grouped the classification for the two multisport Games in a single tournament, to add participants and to lower the costs of our countries, traveling only once to try to earn their place in Barranquilla 2018 and Lima 2019. We have already made the presentation of the Men’s Pan American Championship in Santo Domingo, with the visit of the Technical Commission to supervise the facilities and the development of the organization, which
is excellent, so we will continue working this way. We are sure both tournaments will be very successful. On the other hand, we are already organizing the WBSC Softball Americas Assembly in Botswana in October, taking advantage of the World Baseball and Softball Congress to be held in this African country. The majority of the countries of the continent will be present, so we will take the opportunity to meet. Finally, we will continue to work side by side with the 2019 Pan American Games Organizing Committee in Lima, so that we can live an unforgettable event, like the one we lived in Toronto. I personally traveled to Lima last year to closely follow the organization of the Games, and we will certainly continue to do so in the coming months.

Los Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, y Caterine Ibarguen; Los Leones argentinos, Mónica Puig… y como olvidarse de la siempre espectacular selección de Baloncesto de los Estados Unidos. Pero también aquellos que sin subirse a un podio cumplieron su sueño de pertenecer al olimpo deportivo, con la única meta de superarse a sí mismos, de alcanzar su máximo potencial. Todos ellos escribieron la historia durante 16 días bajo la atenta mirada del Cristo Redentor. Como cada cuatro años, la excelencia del deporte mundial se reunió para disputar y disfrutar los Juegos Olímpicos. La canción oficial de Río 2016, “Alma e Coração”, recorre el mundo con un mensaje de esperanza, de un mundo nuevo y mejor. Un mensaje que perfectamente podría resumir el camino que el Softbol recorrió en los últimos años, un camino lleno de resiliencia y convicción en la búsqueda de volver a la máxima cita deportiva del planeta. Fazer acontecer, lutar e conquistar, Mantenho a fé pra caminhar, e assim eu vou O o o o. O o o o, De alma e coração. (Hacer que suceda, luchar y conquistar, Mantener la fe para caminar, y así lo haré Oooo. Oooo, Con alma y corazón.) Así, con alma y corazón, el Softbol persiguió su sueño olímpico por más de 11 años. Ese día el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), en su Sesión 129, aprobó por unanimidad el retorno del Béisbol y el Softbol al programa olímpico de los Juegos de Verano de Tokio 2020, como parte de un paquete de cinco deportes que se sumarán a las 28 disciplinas del programa en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos. Además del Béisbol/ Softbol, el paquete de deportes incluye al Karate, la Escalada Deportiva, el Surf y el Skateboarding. Con la decisión consumada, el Presidente del COI, Thomas Bach, declaró: “Queremos llevar el deporte a los jóvenes. Con la gran cantidad de opciones que hoy tienen los jóvenes, no podemos esperar que ellos vengan automáticamente a nosotros. Tenemos que ir hacia ellos. La balanceada propuesta de Tokio 2020 cumple con todos los objetivos de la Agenda Olímpica 2020 que la hizo posible. But also, the athletes who didn’t reach the podium but made real their dreams of competing in their sports, with the aim of outdoing themselves, to reach their maximum potential. They all were part of history during 16 days, under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer. Every four years, the elite of the sports world met to participate and enjoy the Olympic Games. The Rio 2016 official song, “Alma e Coração” (Soul and heart), travels the world with a message of hope, of a new and better world. A message that could well summarize the recent years of Softball, a path full of resilience and conviction seeking to return to the top sporting event on the planet. Oooo, Soul and heart.) Thus, with heart and soul, Softball pursued its Olympic dream for more than 11 years. A dream that once was reality that vanished in 2005, and finally this August 3, 2016, in the heat of the “Cidade Maravilhosa”, materialized again.
That day, the 129° Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unanimously approved the return of Baseball and Softball to the Olympic program of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games, as part of a package of five sports that will join the other 28 disciplines in the next Olympic Games. In addition to Baseball/ Softball, the sports package includes Karate, Climbing, Surfing and Skateboarding. After this historical decision, the IOC President Thomas Bach said: “We want to take sport to the youth. With the many options that young people have, we cannot expect any more that they will come automatically to us. We have to go to them. Tokyo 2020’s balanced proposal fulfils all of the goals of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendation that allowed it. Taken together, the five sports are an innovative combination of established and emerging, youth-focused events that are popular in Japan and will add to the legacy of the Tokyo Games”. After the celebrations and joy for the good news, the President of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), Riccardo Fraccari said: “Today’s decision is an important milestone in the sport’s history and a momentous day for baseball/softball’s estimated 65 million athletes in over 140 countries, as well as millions more fans around the world. On behalf of the WBSC and all the athletes, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Tokyo

The WBSC is now in a position to harness this enormous support for the benefit of the Olympic Movement by nurturing a passion for the Olympic Games in generations of baseball/ softball fans around the world.” Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee also expressed joy with the unanimous vote of the IOC. The Oorganizing Committee President, Yoshiro Mori, said: “We are very pleased that the IOC has approved our proposal. I deeply appreciate the support of the IOC members, and of various national and international federations in this matter. Porter viajó a la Ciudad de México y se entrevistó con el Presidente del Comité Olímpico Internacional, el estadounidense Avery Brundage, quien le advirtió desde un principio que debería tener mucha paciencia para conseguir su objetivo. Recién en el mes de junio de 1977 la Federación Internacional de Softbol (actual División Softbol de la WBSC) fue reconocida por el Comité Olímpico Internacional en su 79° Sesión realizada en Praga, República Checa, pasando a formar parte de la familia olímpica como Federación Internacional reconocida, aunque no de los Juegos propiamente dichos. Aquella expresión de Brundage acerca de la paciencia fue una premonición, ya que debieron pasar más de 29 años antes de que el Softbol hiciera su debut en el programa olímpico. Porter, ya Presidente de la ISF, recibió la noticia más esperada el 13 de junio de 1991, durante la 97° Sesión del Comité Olímpico Internacional, celebrada en Birmingham, Inglaterra. Allí, el COI anunció que el Softbol Femenino sería incluido en el programa oficial de los Juegos Olímpicos de Atlanta 1996. En honor a este día, cada 13 de junio se celebra en todo el planeta el Día Mundial del Softbol.
A partir de allí se sucedieron cuatro exitosas ediciones del Softbol olímpico, sin duda la época dorada de nuestro deporte. Atlanta 96 fue el debut del Softbol en los Juegos Olímpicos. Un total de 120 mujeres compitieron durante nueve días, del 21 al 30 de julio (el 28 fue día de descanso), en el primer evento olímpico de nuestro deporte. La sede del histórico evento fue el Golden Park Stadium en Columbus, Georgia, con una capacidad para 8.800 espectadores. Ocho equipos compitieron, en una ronda de todos contra todos: Australia, Canadá, China, China Taipei, Holanda, Japón, Puerto Rico, y Estados Unidos. Con todas las sesiones agotadas, un total de 120.000 espectadores presenciaron el debut olímpico del Softbol, y le dieron a nuestro deporte la más calurosa bienvenida (datos obtenidos del reporte oficial de los Juegos de Atlanta 96). That’s how Don Porter began the mission of his life: to bring our sport to the maximum universal sporting event. Porter traveled to Mexico City and met with the International Olympic Committee President at the time, the American Avery Brundage, who warned him from the beginning that he should have patience to achieve his goal. In June 1977 the International Softball Federation (current WBSC Softball Division) was recognized by the International Olympic Committee at its 79th Session held in Prague, Czech Republic, becoming part of the Olympic family as recognized International Federation, while still being excluded from the Olympic Games. They had to spend more than 29 years before Softball made its debut in the Olympic Program. Porter, ISF President at the time, received the news on June 13, 1991, during the 97th Session of the International Olympic Committee, held in Birmingham, England. There, the IOC announced that Women’s Softball would be included in the official program of the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996. In honor of this day, World Softball Day is celebrated every year on June 13th around the globe.
From there four successful editions of the Olympic Softball competition succeeded, undoubtedly the golden age of our sport. Atlanta 96 marked the Softball debut in the Olympics. A total of 120 female athletes competed for nine days in the first Olympic event of our sport, from July 21 to 30. The stage of the historical event was the Golden Park Stadium in Columbus, Georgia, with a capacity for 8,800 spectators. Eight teams competed in a single round-robin play: Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and the United States. With every session soldout, a total of 120,000 spectators witnessed our Olympic debut (data from the official report of the Atlanta 96 Games), and gave our sport the warmest welcome. The second presence of Softball in the Olympics was four years later, in Sydney 2000. The Softball Centre in Aquilina Reserve, Blacktown, was the venue of the competitions, where eight teams participated: Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Italy, Japan, New Zealand and United States. During the games, almost the 83% of the tickets available were sold (data from the International Society of Olympic Historians ISOH), and more than 189,000 spectators were present in the diamond throughout the Softball tournament (data collected from the Athens 2004 Official Report). Once meses después de la fina olímpica en la capital griega, y luego de tres exitosos Juegos Olímpicos, el Softbol recibiría en 2005 la peor noticia de su historia. Luego de los Juegos de Atenas, el Comité Olímpico Internacional decidió rever el programa olímpico luego de cada competencia, haciendo una revisión individual de cada deporte del programa. En la 117ª Sesión del COI realizada en Singapur, todos los deportes fueron puestos a consideración de la Asamblea. Para mantenerse en el programa oficial cada deporte necesitaba obtener la mitad más uno de los votos. Los únicos dos deportes que fallaron en alcanzar este número fueron el Softbol y el Béisbol. De este modo, el 8 de julio de 2005 se determinó la salida de ambos deportes del programa para los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012. Allí, las competencias de nuestro deporte se desarrollaron en el Fengtai Sports Centre Softball Field, con una capacidad de 10 mil espectadores, hasta el momento el estadio de Softbol olímpico con mayor capacidad de la historia. Y todas las entradas para esta competencia se agotaron con más de un mes de anticipación al inicio de los Juegos Olímpicos. Más de 300 mil personas asistieron a los partidos de Softbol en Beijing. Y si bien esta fue una clara demostración de la pertenencia del Softbol a los Juegos Olímpicos y del aporte que nuestro deporte puede realizar al movimiento olímpico, la decisión de excluir al Softbol de los Juegos ya se había tomado, como dijimos, tres años antes. A partir de ahí se sucedieron dos campañas para reincorporar al Softbol en los Juegos Olímpicos, con resultados infructuosos. En primer lugar, se trabajó para que el Comité Olímpico Internacional revea su postura de quitar al Softbol de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012. Esa idea murió en Turín, en febrero de 2006, cuando los miembros del COI votaron en contra de revisar la situación de nuestro deporte para los Juegos de 2012. again for an Olympic competition, this time in Athens, for the 2004 Games. Our sport was held in the Olympic Softball Stadium, located in the Helliniko Olympic Complex, with capacity for 4,800 fans. There played Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Greece, Italy, Japan and USA. Eleven months after the Olympic finale in the Greek capital, and after three successful Olympic Games, Softball received the worst news of its history in 2005. After the Games in Athens, the International Olympic Committee decided to review the Olympic program after each competition, making an individual review of each sport. At the 117th IOC Session, held in Singapore, each sport was taken into consideration by the Assembly. To stay in the official program, each sport needed to get half plus one of the votes. The only two sports that failed to reach this number were Softball and Baseball. Thus, on July 8, 2005, it was determined that both Baseball and Softball would be removed from the Olympic programme for the London 2012 Olympic Games. While the results of the voting were secret, at the request of the International Federations, it was known later that Softball obtained 52 votes in favor and 52 votes against, with one abstention. In other words, Softball was out of the Games by just one vote, and without a majority against them. With this decision, Softball and Baseball were
the first sports eliminated from the Olympic program since 1936, when the Polo was removed from the Games. The last appearence of Softball in the Olympic Games has been until now Beijing 2008. There, the competitions of our sport were held in the Fengtai Sports Centre Softball Field, with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, which is the largest capacity for an Olympic Softball Stadium in history. All the tickets for this competition were sold out more than one month before the start of the Olympic Games. More than 300,000 people attended the Softball games in Beijing. And while this was a clear demonstration of Softball belonging to the Olympic Games, and the contribution our sport can make to the Olympic Movement, the decision to exclude Softball for the 2012 Games had already been taken, as we said, three years earlier. From there succeeded two campaigns looking to reinstate Softball in the Olympics, with unsuccessful results. First, our sport worked for the International Olympic Committee to review its decision to remove Softball from the 2012 Olympic Games. That idea died in Turin in February 2006, when the IOC members voted against reviewing the situation of our sport for the 2012 Games. This way Softball lost its last train to London. One year later, the International Softball Federation launched

Por un lado, el COI le otorgó los Juegos Olímpicos del 2020 a la ciudad de Tokio (superando en las votaciones a Estambul y Madrid); y por el otro, eligió como Presidente del Comité Olímpico Internacional al alemán Thomas Bach.

After several months of intense work, with an interdisciplinary committee made up of members of both sports, Baseball/ Softball presented their credentials once again before the IOC Assembly, in 2013 in Buenos Aires, with two goals in mind: the recognition by the IOC and the WBSC as the only global authority controlling the destinies of Baseball and Softball (replacing the IBAF and ISF); and the inclusion of both disciplines in the 2020 Olympic program. The first of these goals was accomplished without major surprises. However, the return to the 2020 Games would take more time. On September 8, 2013, after a solid presentation that reflected the great work done in the bid of our sports, the IOC chose
Wrestling as the only sport to be incorporated into the 2020 Olympic Games. The election ended with 49 votes to Wrestling against 24 who voted for Baseball/Softball, which finished second. Once again, the Olympic horizon moved away. However, in Buenos Aires two other important decisions were taken, which would be crucial in the future of this story. The IOC awarded the 2020 Olympic Games to the city of Tokyo (winning the bid over Istanbul and Madrid); and Mr. Thomas Bach was elected President of the International Olympic Committee.

El resto ya es historia conocida. La propuesta de Tokio de cinco nuevos eventos, incluyendo Béisbol/Softbol, el proceso de aprobación por parte del Comité Ejecutivo del COI; y finalmente la rúbrica definitiva con la votación unánime aprobando la inclusión de nuestro deporte en los Juegos de Tokio 2020. Más allá de la excelente noticia que el COI le dio a nuestro deporte, es necesario mencionar que los cinco deportes propuestos han sido aprobados solamente

Y tal como declaró la ex softbolista olímpica estadounidense Jennie Finch a The Atlantic, “por supuesto que me gustaría que sea una incorporación permanente, pero sé que nuestro deporte y sus jugadores aprovecharán los próximos cuatro años para demostrar por qué el Softbol también debería ser incluido en los Juegos Olímpicos del futuro”. Las ciudades candidatas para organizar los Juegos de 2024 son dos: Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos) y París (Francia). La elección de la sede olímpica para los Juegos de 2024 se realizará el 13 de septiembre de 2017, en la Sesión 130 del COI que se realizará en Lima, Perú. The Agenda 2020 was unanimously approved by the IOC on December 8, 2014, in Monaco, opening the door for new sports to be added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Program, at the request of the Japanese capital itself. And here’s where the election of Tokyo to host the 2020 Games acquires fundamental importance, because it is well known that Baseball and Softball are considered national sports in Japan, so the chances of being an Olympic sport opened again. You already know the rest of the history. The fiveevents purpose of Tokyo, including Baseball/Softball, the IOC Executive Committee approval process; and finally the definitive decision with the unanimous vote accepting the inclusion of our sport in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Beyond this excellent news coming from the IOC, it is necessary to
mention that the five proposed sports have only been approved for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which means that any city chosen to host the Games of 2024 may propose their own additional sports (without any obligation to include these five disciplines). Regarding this issue, Fraccari stated that “Today’s historic decision by the IOC is a ‘home run’ for the Olympics, our sport and the Tokyo 2020 Games. Nations competing for the Olympic gold medal in baseball and softball, in Japan, will best showcase the nature and spirit of our global sport – and it will be the most covered and most exciting international baseball/ softball tournaments in history, which will help build our case to be featured in future Olympic Games, as well.” And as by former US Olympic softball player, Jennie Finch, stated to The Atlantic: “Of course, I wish it was a permanent reinstatement. But I know that the sport and the players will take advantage of the next four years and prove why it should be included in future Olympics as well.”
Two are the candidate cities to host the 2024 Olympic Games: Los Angeles (USA) and Paris (France). The election will be held on September 13, 2017, during the 130° IOC Session in Lima, Peru. The winning city in this race will have the same right as Tokyo: propose a group of sports to be added in the Games.

The Tokyo 2020 emblems Tokyo 2020 unveiled the official emblems of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, “Harmonised Checkered Emblems,” in April 2016. Inspired by a traditional motif, the design was highly acclaimed by the public and the Tokyo 2020 Emblems Selection Committee for exemplifying Japan, and for its representation of the spirit of the Tokyo 2020 Games Vision. Checkered patterns have been popular in many countries around the world throughout
Tokyo 2020 history. In Japan, the checkered pattern became formally known as “ichimatsu moyo” in the Edo period (1603–1867), and this checkered design in the traditional Japanese indigo blue expresses a refined elegance and sophistication that exemplifies Japan. Composed of three varieties of rectangular shapes, the design represents different countries, cultures and ways of thinking. As part of an initiative to engage the general public in the delivery of the Games, last October, a design competition was launched for the new Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games emblems. The aim of encouraging the people of Japan to become and feel fully involved in the Games was a resounding success: Tokyo 2020 received a total of 14,599 entries! The Tokyo 2020 Action & Legacy Plan The Tokyo 2020 Action & Legacy Plan is an original project being undertaken by Tokyo 2020. The plan consists of a series of
nationwide “Actions” aimed at engaging a wide range of people in Games related activities with the ultimate objective of achieving lasting post-Games legacies. These “Actions” will commence shortly after the conclusion of the Rio 2016 Games and culminate in the three-month long Tokyo 2020 Festival that encompasses the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Actions are not merely an assortment of incoherent and unconnected projects, but form an integral part of a comprehensive and consistent plan. The organization believes that, if their efforts to engage as many people as possible in the pre-Games period are successful, this will inevitably lead to a host of enduring post-Games legacies. To ensure these successful legacies, the Action & Legacy Plan is based on the five following pillars: Sport and Health; Urban Planning and Sustainability; Culture and Education; Economy and Technology; and Recovery (from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami), Nationwide Benefits, and Global Communication. To achieve our goal of realizing a universally accessible and fully inclusive Game, the Organizing Committee is working on the development of the Tokyo 2020 Accessibility Guidelines which will be a vital frame of reference for all Games’ venues and services. The Guidelines will be promoted widely to the general public and actively used for the preparation and management of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Tokyo 2020 Accessibility Guidelines will take into consideration the requirements of all Games’ stakeholders, from the athletes to the media and spectators. These Guidelines catalogue all accessibility prerequisites for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues along with detailing several other stipulations such as access and circulation along major spectator routes, publications and communications. The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee is also compiling an accessibility training manual. The manual is intended for the training for Tokyo 2020 Games-related staff and volunteers, but they will also encourage all the Games delivery partners, private contractors and other relevant parties to utilize this manual for
their own staff training purposes. ara cerrar la XVII Asamblea ordinaria de la WBSC Américas Softbol, antigua Confederación Panamericana de Softbol Aficionado (CONPASA), se llevó a cabo una cena en las instalaciones del Hotel Hesperia de la ciudad de Valencia, como homenaje a quien fuese en vida Presidente de esta organización y uno de los dirigentes más ilustres de nuestro deporte, el Sr. Jesús Suniaga. La velada contó con la presencia de sus familiares más allegados. En dicho acto, se hizo una reseña audiovisual, en donde se resumió la vida de
Don Jesús, bajo la voz del narrador Carlos Centeno, quien se encargó de relatar la biografía, anécdotas vividas, eventos en los que participó y todas las metas alcanzadas. Bajo un ambiente de camaradería, el Presidente de la WBSC Americas Softbol, el Sr. Tommy Velazquez, procedió a entregar a dos de sus hijos; Jesús Arnaldo Suniaga y Jesús Antonio Suniaga, un cuadro al óleo, pintado por un insigne artista venezolano, donde se podía visualizar una hermosa fotografía de Don Jesús Suniaga y su amada esposa, Maura Pérez de Suniaga, un momento muy emotivo

o close the XVII Ordinary Assembly of the WBSC Americas Softball, former Pan American Softball Confederation Aficionado (CONPASA), the organization held a dinner to pay tribute to former President of this organization, and one of the most distinguished leaders of our sport, Mr. Jesus Suniaga. The event was held at the Hesperia Hotel in the city of Valencia, and was attended by their closest relatives. During the dinner, a video reviewing Mr. Suniaga’s most
important moments was played, narrated by Carlos Centeno, who told the biography, anecdotes, and events in which Suniaga participated and goals he achieved during his life. Under an atmosphere of camaraderie, the President of the WBSC Americas Softball, Mr. Tommy Velazquez, presented to Jesus Arnaldo Suniaga and Jesus Antonio Suniaga (sons of Jesús), a beautiful portrait of Mr. Suniaga and his beloved wife, Maura Perez de Suniaga painted by a famous Venezuelan

Alfonso Bueno, David Amaíz e Iván Briceño, para que procedieran a entregar la réplica de dicha pintura a su hija María Alejandra Suniaga. Para finalizar, el Presidente de la CONCACAS, Sr. Carlos López, hizo
entrega de una placa de reconocimiento al Sr. Jesús Suniaga, por su impecable labor en el ámbito del Softbol Mundial, que fue recibida emotivamente por sus nietos. En la cena estuvieron presentes todos los delegados que participaron de la Asamblea, en lo que además de ser un merecido reconocimiento para el recordado Don Jesús -uno de los dirigentes más importantes en la historia de nuestro deporte-, representó un cierre inmejorable para la máxima reunión de la dirigencia del Softbol continental.

All the delegates who attended the Assembly were present at the dinner too, being not only at a well-deserved recognition to the late Mr. Subiaga -one of the most important leaders in the history of our sport-, but also at an excellent closing ceremony for the most important meeting for the leadership of continental Softball. In his origin country – the Czech Republic – Waage has been a Czech Softball Association Executive Council member since its foundation in 1993, he’s been the President of Czech Softball since 2002. He is currently member of the Czech NOC Executive Board, and a member of the NOC Foreign Relations Committee . As the ESF President, Waage wants to focus on the marketing and promotion of softball as a sport. “I want the ESF to become a strong brand, which everybody wants to be a part of,” said Waage. “The ESF is here for the National Federations, we always want to be easily approachable and ready to assist with whatever the NFs may need. And I think the time is right to think about boosting our development with a full-
time executive position. The ESF has lately kicked off a number of promising projects.
