Canada the only unbeaten

Toronto, July 14, 2015. The second day of Softball in Toronto 2015 Pan American Games in the President’s Choice Ballpark Pan Am is history. Yesterday, Canada beat the United States 3-2 in a great ballgame, and remains at the top of the table as the only undefeated. In addition, Mexico beat Argentina 5-3 and Venezuela claimed the victory against Dominican Republic by 5-1.

Canada 3-2 USA In an exciting match Canada beat the United States 3-2 in eight innings. Thus the home team is the only remaining unbeaten in the tournament, after two days of competition. Jeff Ellsworth was the man of the match, both in offense and defense. The right fielder participated in the three Canadian runs, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning and the winning run in the eighth. However, Ellsworth also shone with the

glove, in the bottom of the second inning, robbing a home run to Kris Bogach, when the game was still 0-0. In the third inning both pitchers got into trouble on their own, but fixed it in the same way. In the top of the inning, Canada loaded the bases with two outs, thanks to three walks by Gerald Muizelaar. However, the American number 10 finished the inning with a strikeout to Jason Hill, ending the local threat. For its part, the United States also had his chance in this inning. Sean Cleary walked Pat Sagdal and Derrick Zechman, putting two runners on with two outs. But he also managed to emerge unscathed, striking out Matt Palazzo. In the top of the fourth inning, Josh Johnson found a pitch, hitting a long homer to right field to put his team 1-0 up. The Canadian response would be immediate.

Mathieu Roy hit double to right to start the fifth attack of the world champions, and took third thanks to a wild pitch by Muizelaar, who retired one more out (a line to the third baseman by Brad Ezekiel) before being replaced by Tony Mancha, who entered the game with the mission to keep the zero on the board. But the right hander could not do it, because Ellsworth, hit a bomb to the left, giving the home team the advantage for the delight of the public, who attended in good quantity to the President’s Choice Pan Am Ballpark. However, the United States tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, silencing the stadium. Kris Bogach opened the inning with a single, and Nick Mullins walked. Then Pat Sagdal hit a solid line to third base, allowing the tying run by Bogach. Emotions not end there, as USA had two chances with bases loaded, to leave Canada in the field. But Sean Cleary came out of trouble with two strikeouts, sending the game to extra innings. In the eighth, with Ellsworth in second, Mullaley hit to left to produce the third run of his team. But a double play ended the Canadian attack. The end of the match would be similar, as Cleary (8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 BB, 16 K) struck out the first batter he faced, and a line to shortstop started a double play that ended the game

Mexico 5-3 Argentina Mexico took an important victory yesterday against Argentina, beating the South Americans by 5-3. Great offensive game by Jesus Cardona, awith a homer and 4 RBI. During the first innings both pitchers silenced their opponents. And while the Mexican team threatened in the second with runners on second and third, both Jose Naranjo and Juan Potolicchio kept the zero. In the third episode the Mexican starter was injured and had to leave the field, replaced by Samuel Villalvazo, who was the winner of the game. In the third episode the Mexican Ruben Delgadillo produced the first run of the game. Erick Ochoa singled to right field with one out and advanced on a wild pitch to get in scoring position. And Delgadillo drove him with a grounder between first and second that went into the right field, putting the 1-0 on the board. In the fourth episode Mexico returned found again the ways to score. With one out, Jorge Rios singled, and Ismael Peña walked; that was the last batter for Potolicchio, who was replaced by Roman Godoy. However, with two out, Jesus Cardona hit three-run homer to center field, increasing the lead to 4-0.

In the fifth inning the Argentine team reacted and scored twice. Manuel Godoy led the way with a single; his brother Gustavo hit to third base, good for double play, but Gustavo Prishker failed in his throw to second, leaving runners in the corners with no outs. In this situation, Mariano Montero drove in the first run of Argentina with a sacrifice fly to right, while the second run was scored thanks to a double by Ladislao Malarczuk. However, Mexico expanded its lead in the sixth, with an RBI single by Cardona, the figure of the Mexican attack (2-4, HR, R, 4 RBI). In his last attack the Argentine team attempted a reaction, with a solo homer by Gustavo Godoy. Fernando Petric followed him with an infield hit, bringing the potential tying run to the batting cage. But Samuel Villalvazo closed the game forcing Mauricio Caceres to bat a fly to shortstop to end the game. The winner was Villalvazo (IP 4.2, 6 H, 3 R, 4 K), whereas for Argentina the defeated was Juan Potolicchio (IP 3.1, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K).

Venezuela 5-1 RepĂşblica Dominicana Venezuela got yesterday their first win of the Pan American Games after defeating Dominican Republic 5-1. Supported by the good work of Ramon Jones from the circle and Luiger Pinto with the bat in his hands, the Venezuelan team matches his record with a win and a loss. The first runs of the game came in the bottom of the first inning. Arturo Acacio doubled to left, and soon after scored on an RBI single by Pinto, who later also scored thanks to a pass ball. That was it for Melvin Batista, who started the game and retired just two batters, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. At the close of the third inning, Kerlis Rivero, Pinto, Jorge Linares and Edwin Lima chained hits to open the inning, generating two runs for the South American team. However, reliever Yennier Volquez prevented further damage with two strikeouts and a grounder to third, to get out of the jam. In the fifth Dominican attack the Central American stepped on the plate for the only time in the day. Luis Martinez reached on an error by Lima at second base, and Wilton Robles brought

him home with a double to left field. Still no outs, Engel Santana was hit by pitch, putting two runners on the bases. But Jones retired the next three batters with two strikeouts and a grounder to third base. However, Venezuela immediately recovered the four-run lead. Pinto took advantage of a mistake by the Dominican defense to score the fifth run of his team. The first baseman was on base thanks to his third hit of the day. The game was won by Ramon Jones throwing the complete game, allowing 1 run, 3 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts. The defeat was for Batista.

Games for today 14:00 hs. Venezuela vs USA This year, both teams faced off in the World Championship in Saskatoon. Venezuela took the match 3-2, with the win for Ramon Jones in five innings of relief (2 H, 2 BB, 7 K). Mancha took the loss, despite throwing a good game (7 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 14 K). The winning run fell in the fourth inning, with the game tied, thanks to a wild pitch, allowing Luiger Pinto to step on the plate. Meanwhile, in 2014 both teams lived a great

CONPASA Softbol Caribbean Games 2014 Mexican and Dominican teams clashed twice. In the round robin Dominican Republic claimed the win by 7-6, in a match where both teams combined to hit five homers. For Mexico Marco Gonzalez hit two home runs in the game, while Edgar Lopez contributed with one more. On the Dominican side, Figuereo and Julio Diaz added a homer each. The game was won Arfy Ramos (3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 K, 2 BB) and lost by Eduardo Escobedo (2.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K).

Was won by Josh Johnson, who pitched seven periods with 3 hits, 3 runs 4 walks and 9 strikeouts. The defeated was Joan Colombo (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 K).

16:30 hs. MĂŠxico vs Dominicana Mexico and Dominican Republic played one of the best matches of the 2012 Pan American Championships in Medellin, with Mexican triumph 6-5 in nine innings. The winner was Sergio Almeida who threw six innings in relief (2 H, 3 R, 5 K, 2 BB), while the defeated was Manuel Garcia (6 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 2 K, 1 BB). Edgar Lopez homered by the winning team. In the next Pan American Championship in Parana 2014, the Dominican team won by 5-0. Melvin Batista pitched six innings allowing just one hit, with six strikeouts and three walks. Sergio Almeida lost, retiring just a batter, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, and 1 base on balls. On offense, Sergio La Hoz stole the show with 2 home runs in 4 at bats, with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. But in the playoff game, the Mexican team won the match, with a score of 6-4, taking a medal in the regional competition. Gustavo Prishker was brillant, with a 3 for 3 effort, with 2 homers and 6 RBI (all the Mexican runs). The winner was Villalvazo in six innings of relieft (4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K), whereas Dominican Santiago Diaz took the loss (2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 K). Finally, the last official confrontation of these two teams was in Saskatoon, when the Caribbean team beat Mexico 4-3. Dominican Republic built a threerun rally in the top of the last inning to claim trhe victory. The winner was Yennier Volquez, who received three runs and five hits in six innings. Villalvazo lost the game (1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB), who entered to close the game in the seventh inning and could not avoid the defeat of his team. For Mexico Ruben Delgadillo and Alan Salgado homered, whereas Dominican Pablo Figuereo hit a bomb too.

19:00 hs. CanadĂĄ vs Argentina The two ends of our continent will join today, when Argentina and Canada face off in the diamond. These teams have had a large rivalry in recent years, with favorable results for both countries. During the Pan American Championships in Medellin 2012, Canada beat Argentina 3-0, with a win for Don Scott over Lucas Mata, who took the loss for the South Americans. Both teams met again in the playoffs of the competition, with another win for Canada, this time by 2-0, thanks to a 2-run homer by Jeff Ellsworth 2 in the first inning of play. The defeat was for Juan Potolicchio, while Scott got the win again. These teams played again on the opening day of the World 2013, in Auckland, with a victory for

Sean Whitten won the game (3.2 IP, 1H, 6 K) and Lucas Mata charged with the loss (4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 K). However, this two teams played again during the playoffs, and Argentina had the win with a 2-1 score. The key play was a two-run homer by German Sacks in the sixth inning. Both teams also met twice in the 2014 Pan American Championship of Parana, with two wins for the Argentine team. The win went for Roman Godoy, (4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K); while Devon McCullough lost in 5 periods of work (4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 6 K). Meanwhile, in the semifinal, Argentina won again, this time 5-1. The key play was an error by Bryan Abrey in the fifth, which allowed Argentina to turn the game when the score was 1-0 in favor of Canada. In the seventh inning, Mariano Montero’s solo homer confirm the win. Andy Skelton lost the game (3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K), while Potolicchio won it in five innings of work (1 H, 1 BB, 10 K, 0 R). The last meeting between the teams came in the World of Saskatoon, with a 7-5 win to the host team, on his way to the world title. Ezekiel and Ian Fehrman homered by Canada, while Juan Zara did the same for Argentina. Sean Cleary win it in 4 innings of work, with 3 hits, 3 runs, and 4 strikeouts; the defeat went for Potolicchio (2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 K).
