welcome to dubai

Welcome to our city

Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE

Just 47 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Founding father of the UAE

A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.

www.discover-dubai.ae

Government

The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.9 million people. Around 88% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

City basics Local time The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving. Currency The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One Ruble = Dhs 0.056 One GBP = Dhs 4.83 One Yuan = Dhs 0.54 One Euro = Dhs 4.11 One Rupee = Dhs 0.053 Language The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. Here are some Arabic phrases to help you: Hello - marhaba Welcome - ahlan wa sahlan Goodbye - maa-salaama God willing - in shaa'Allah Yes - naam No - laa Let's go - yalla 6 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

Please - min fadlak Thank you - shukran How much? - bikam? Price - si'r Where is...? - ayna...? Right - yamiin Left - yasaar

Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Public display of affection The UAE is an Islamic country, and these acts are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.

Alcohol Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

Ladies first Most public services have a women's-only queue or section, so you may use them where applicable. www.discover-dubai.ae

The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.

Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 7

What is it like to be at

SMCCU in Ramadan?

By: Colleen ‘Salamah’ Stephenson Every year for over twenty years The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding hosts unique Ramadan Iftars in our historical, windtower houses in Al-Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Our team expands during this special month to include dozens of Emirati volunteers; often university students; some coming from neighbouring Emirates even, to take part in this one of a kind Iftar in the whole region. Our Emirati hosts share the authentic and sacred experience of Breaking the Fast with a meal called Iftar, intriguing interactions, watching the team and Muslim guests pray the short sunset prayer and then all dive into a full Emirati buffet and a unique walk under the stars and windtowers for a visit to the rulers Diwan Mosque. During these Iftars, our guests get to partake in our famous Open Doors, Open Minds question and answer session, as they do in all of our activities year- round. Why do we work more during Ramadan, while other’s take time off or shorten their hours? Our job is not rewarded as others. It does 8 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

not matter what salary or thanks the staff or volunteers receive at the end of the month; it is during the month we are repaid by our guests’ comments, because it is just the type of people we are. “We had no idea Emirati people were this friendly!” “How did you all wait for us to fill our plates of food, while you all are the ones fasting!” “I never imagined watching a prayer or going to the mosque would be such a laid back, comfortable experience!” Our team love breaking stereotypes by simply representing the truth. These two houses in Al Fahidi are our homes and so we treat everyone as a personal guest. The types of people we have on our team are completely devoted to the culture, traditions and manners of the Emirates. All get grouped onto teams, so we are in a rotation and ensure all have time at home with their families and for the more traditional routes of worship during the Holy month. A pre-dawn meal called Suhur is to prepare the fasting person to complete the days fast. This meal can be consumed anytime during the night and can vary per person from a #discover_dxb

welcome to dubai whole meal to a small glass of water. Intention is then given to fast; ensuring this is worship and not a diet. Iftar is the breaking of the fast meal, which instantly begins when the call to prayer is heard at sunset. The most common Iftar starts with dates & water, followed by some light food. Muslims then pray the Maghrib prayer and return to eat the main dishes. Muslims often snack in the evening and night; especially during social and family visits and sip as much water as possible due to the summer season we are in. The Quran, is the Muslim Holy Book and we all try to read through it entirely as it has been sectioned off especially to read through the month. After the night prayer in Ramadan, we have extra prayers called Taraweh, which can last for an hour or two. In the last third of the night, over the last ten night of Ramadan, there are additional prayers called Qiyam Al Layl which happen after midnight. As much charity is given during this month as one can give in as many ways as possible. The whole month is an exercise in patience, discipline and the difference between ‘wants and needs’ become clear. A few gentlemen take part also in Itiqaf, which is the seclusion in the mosque during these last ten nights, and in which every Muslim community worldwide needs to have participants. The month is then summed up at the very end where all provide the equivalent of two double-handfulls of a non-perishable food to the poor prior to the final Eid Prayer. The hope is that these lessons and renewed connection to our fellow humanity continues throughout the year, until the next Ramadan. www.discover-dubai.ae

Muslims are required to fast for the month of Ramadan as it is one of the five pillars of faith which must be adhered to. However due to certain circumstances some Muslims are forgiven from fasting. Travelers do not fast while on their journey. The young and the elderly do not need to fast, but can if they feel up for the challenge. Muslims who are very sick or the delay of oral medication until night would cause more harm to the body or irreversible damage do not fast. Menstruating women do not fast to allow them nourishment. Breastfeeding and pregnant Muslims determine for themselves or take doctor’s advice as to if they are able to safely fast or not, due to the needs of their body and their baby. Depending on the case of the nonfasting Muslim, they will either make up the missed fast after Ramadan or pay the value of a meal to the poor. Everyone though in the U.A.E. Muslim or not fast while in public for community cohesion. Your question on Ramadan, Islam or the Emirati culture wasn’t above? You are more than welcome to contact SMCCU for a memorable experience, especially before this holy month comes to an end. With thanks to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Here's everything you need to know about these modes of transportation that will help you move from place to place. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.

Dubai's souks

Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 16 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

What to do The Country’s Only Hindu Temple Bur Dubai Old Souk In 1958, Sheikh Rashid bin Said Al Maktoum, the former Vice-President and second Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, gave his permission for a Hindu temple to be built. This was even prior to the UAE’s capital rise from oil production. Situated in Bur Dubai Old Souk, the temple remains to this day the only Hindu temple in the UAE. Islam prohibits the use of idols, so there aren’t any present within the temples, however, there are a number of paintings on display for the purpose of prayer. The charm of the country’s only Hindu temple is, just that, that it is the only one of its kind. Although it is small and understated, the temple serves as the only place where Hindus come to worship, making it a special place for people of all www.discover-dubai.ae

religious beliefs. Devoted pilgrims from all across Dubai flock to the temple to offer prayers, flowers, and fruits. The Hindu temple also offers worshippers free meals, known as Prasada. Prasada is meal that is eaten by Hindus and Sikhs after worship after it is offered to the deity and then distributed among followers. The word ‘Prasada’ literally means a gracious gift. The temple is comprised of a single prayer hall with two shrines, known as ‘Sannidhis’ dedicated to Shiva and Krishna. Shiva is considered the creator and protector of the universe in Hindu cultures and is said to be the Great Yogi, the Lord of Yogis. The deity, Shiva, has been the patron and spokesperson in numerous Hindu Yoga texts. Krishna is considered the ruler of compassion, tenderness and love. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 31

What to see Lover’s Lock Bridge The Yard, Khawaneej The act of securing your love with a padlock has been a tradition for years. The history of love padlocks dates back at least 100 years to a melancholic Serbian tale of World War I. A schoolmistress named Nada, who was from Vrnjacka Banja, fell in love with a Serbian officer named Relja. Following their commitment, Relja went to war in Greece where he eventually fell in love with a lady from Corfu. As a result, Relja and Nada broke off their engagement and she died of a broken heart. Young ladies from Vrnjacka Banja needed to secure their own relationships to avoid being left unwed and they began www.discover-dubai.ae

recording their names, with the names of their lovers, on latches and fastening them to the railings of the scaffold where Nada and Relja used to meet. This is considered the first example of a Lover’s Lock Bridge. Nowadays, people use the names of friends and family as well as their lovers as a way to profess an unbreakable bond. Inspired originally by Pont des Arts in Paris, the bridge is built over a picturesque lake. Couples can hang padlocks engraved with their initials on the bridge as a promise of eternal love for each other. The Yard, Al Khawaneej, is the host of the region’s only Lover’s Lock Bridge. The Yard itself has plenty to look at and is designed to model a farm, with an 18-metre tall windmill, a water mill and a wishing well - this spot is a rustic paradise. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 43

Other markets

Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. If you're looking to add some clothes to your wardrobe without emptying your pockets, make your way to Ukay Ukay where you'll find second-hand t-shirts, dresses and baby clothes for under Dhs 20. 50 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

What to buy

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. If you'd like to try something different, opt for the ones that are filled with caramelised nuts, candied ginger and orange peel. Note: packaged dates can be eaten year-round. www.discover-dubai.ae

Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. The long-lasting fragrance is also used around homes to eliminate stubborn odours from cooking or tobacco. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 51
