EDITOR’S NOTE As many of your will know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global month long campaign to raise awareness and understanding of breast cancer, and educate people about the importance of early screening, regular tests and a lot more. On pages 47 to 50 we talk to specialists who explain a bit more about breast cancer and about how you can check for early signs.

It may only be a month since schools opened, but a lot of parents out there will be starting to look at where to send their children in the next school year. With over 200 private schools in Dubai, making the right chose is important. On pages 36 to 39 we speak with school heads who give their opinions on what you should look for when considering a school and what questions to ask when you are visiting your shortlisted schools.

Connector Celebrating

28 Years In Dubai In October 1991, the first ever issue of Connector was published and distributed predominantly in Jumeirah and on the Jumeirah Road, Al Wasl Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, through a network of medical centres, dentists, spas, salons and coffee shops. The handy A5 sized magazine was well received as a way of informing, advising and supporting families living in Dubai.

It’s been fun developing and growing Connector over the years and at the same time has been as enjoyable to watch Dubai grow and develop as well. Here are just some of the things that have come about over the 28 years Connector has been around.

Though the A5 size has been constant over the last 28 years, Connector, like Dubai, has changed, developed and progressed and is still around and still carrying information that you, the Dubai community want to see.

In the last 28 years Connector has grown in a lot of ways. It is now available in a lot more places, further afield than Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed Road. It is also now accompanied by a widely visited website, www.Connector.ae, and it also reaches more of you, more often with regular news through it’s popular email newsletter.

Carrefour, one of the largest hypermarket and supermarket chains in the world, opened its first hypermarket in the UAE, and the region, in City Centre Deira in 1995. The chain operated by Majid Al Futtaim now has 28 hypermarkets and 43 supermarkets in the country.

The Irish Village has been a Dubai institution since it opened in 1996.

Stadium, the venue has also hosted in its grounds many concerts including performances by Sir Bob Geldof, UB40 and Macy Gray. Dubai now boasts a total of three Irish Villages, including the newly opened outlet in Studio City.

One of the most iconic buildings in Dubai, the Burj Al Arab opened in December 1999. The luxury hotel sits on a man made island just off the Jumeriah coastline and stands at 321 metres high making it the 7th tallest hotel in the world.

In 2001, construction started on Palm Jumeirah, the man made island

at 828 metres tall, and now boasts a staggering 8 world records, was officially inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The eye-catching Cayan Tower, located at the mouth of Dubai Marina was inaugurated in June 2013. The 75 floor residential building stands at 306 metres high, and twists 90 degrees from top to bottom or 1.2 degrees per floor.

Purani Dilli - Raising the stakes

T here is no shortage of Indian restaurants in Dubai, however this new entry on the scene is certainly raising the bar.

Purani Dili was first launched in the Makhool area of Bur Dubai earlier this year, and already has its second home on Dubai’s most prime location, Sheikh Zayed Road in the Four Point Sheraton hotel.

The team gives credit to its quick success to the authentic recipes sourced straight from the lanes of Old Delhi, where it is believed that the famous Mughlai cuisine (served at Purani Dili) originated, and of course to a very personalised service and live entertainment.

Mughlai cuisine is often associated with a distinctive aroma and the taste of ground and whole spices, and this is exactly what we experience as we take the first bite of the galouti kebabs starter, which come delicately sitting on the delicious Zafrani bite sized naans.

We can easily set them apart from all the galouti kebabs we have had in the past because of the distinctive aroma of this flavourful royal food.

Similar is the case with the second starter of dahi kebab. The outer crust is crispy and the stuffing is generous and creamy, and with the www.connector.ae

first bite we wish that chef could give us his secret mix of spices to take home.

Moving on to mains, we order kadai chicken and daal makhani. For vegetarians, daal makhani can either make or break any Indian restaurant’s reputation and this rich, creamy flavourful daal works just in its favour.

And as we scoop up the kadai chicken off the plate with every bite of laccha naan, we get nostalgic of our foodie trips to Old Delhi, but the experience is better here due to the interiors bringing out the regal charm of the Mughal Empire, along with two talented singers setting the mood with their golden voices singing the famous ghazals and soulful songs.

This destination for Mughlai cuisine is divided across two sections, the pre-dining area, where guests can unwind over a few drinks, and a main dining area reflecting the quaint appeal of Delhi’s famous Chandani Chowk in a modern and elegant setting.

We finish off the Mughlai culinary trip with flavourful and nutty gulab jamun. A great way to end a great meal.

What is Breast Cancer?

B reast cancer develops from a cancerous (malignant) cell which develops in the lining of a duct or lobule in one of the breasts.

Breast cancer can also develop in men, although this is much less common than breast cancer in women.

“It’s a disease where cells in the breast grow abnormally and out of control”, says Dr Talat Masroor Senior Consultant and Head of Department, Obstretics and Gynecology at RAK Hospital, Ras Al Khaimah.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United Arab Emirates and worldwide and according to Dr Miriam Klimek, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mediclinic Al Sufouh, “One out of 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The average age at the time of diagnosis is around 64 years old, but about 30 percent are younger than 55 years old at that time.”

Dr Azhar Schett, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecologist, Prime Hospital says, “According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, breast cancer is the www.connector.ae

second most common cancer in women and men worldwide. In 2012, it represented about 12 percent of all new cancer cases and 25 percent of all cancers in women.”

How To Reduce The Risk Of Getting Breast Cancer Even though a lot depends on genes and other multiple factors, one should avoid smoking and alcohol to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer. Woman should exercise regularly once they hit menopause. It is also suggested that breastfeeding decreases the risk for breast cancer.

Dr Marlain Mubarak, Consultant OBGYN and Head of BSGE Endometriosis Centre, Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “Women who have children and are well and breastfeed their babies have higher protection against breast cancer. About 1 in 20 cases of breast cancer are caused by a faulty gene which can be inherited. The faulty gene causes development of breast cancer under the age of 50. In such cases we can offer genetic testing. The genes are called CONNECTOR OCTOBER 47

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS BRCA1 and BRCA2 which are the most common faulty genes.

Dr Ilardia Saredi, Family Medicine Specialist at Allied Medical Centre says, “A healthy lifestyle with exercise, no alcohol or smoking can help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Breastfeeding is also a protective factor against breast cancer".

While there is a little one can do to reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to Dr Talat Masroor of RAK Hospital, early screening and detection is the key to ensure that the treatment begins early, significantly raising the chances of complete cure.

How Can We Detect Breast Cancer Early?

Breast examination and breast screening plays an important role in early detection and treatment. It should be done at least two to three times a year, and ideally every month between the 6th and the 10th day after your period begins.

Dr Miriam Klimek, of Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “For every woman, self-examination on a regular basis is recommended. Women without increased risk, age 20 to 39 should have a clinical breast examination every 2 to 3 years. Women over 40 years old should have annual clinical breast examination, in combination with mammogram every two years.”

Symptoms for breast cancer can vary from person to person. However, there are some common early warning signs of breast cancer, including skin changes such as swelling, 48 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

redness or other visible differences in one or both breast, change in the shape of one or both breasts or general pain in any part of breast.

Dr Azhar Schett of Prime Hospital says, “Some common, early warning signs of breast cancer include nipple discharge, other than breast milk, lumps or nodes felt on or inside of the breast, irritated or itchy breasts, changes in touch (may feel hard, tender or warm), peeling or flaking of the nipple skin, a breast lump or thickening, redness or pitting of the breast skin (like the skin of an orange.”

Dr Kinda Douaidari, Breast Interventional Radiologist and Head of Breast Care Department at HealthBay Polyclinic says, “Mammogram can detect breast cancer up to 18 months before it is large enough to be felt either by the woman herself or by a doctor.

In breast imaging we adopt a multimodality approach for Personalised Breast Screening.

Mammogram is still the Gold Standard for Breast Screening, but there are other new modalities which helps in early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, including : - 3D mammogram Tomosynthesis which provides images of the breast in "slices" from many different angles, it’s far more sensitive in finding small abnormalities.

- Automated breast Ultrasound 3D is a computerised acquisition of the whole breast which enables 3D dimensional images.

- Breast Biopsy to check a problem seen on a mammogram, such as a distortion in breast #connectordubai

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS tissue, or to find out if a breast lump or mass is cancer (malignant). A biopsy is a small piece of tissue that is removed by a special needle and checked in a pathology lab.

- Tomosynthesis is a better mammogram, using this new 3D mammogram increased breast cancer detecting rate by 34% in comparison to digital mammogram.�

How To Do SelfExamination At Home?

If you still on your menstruating, you should do your breast selfexamination within the first two weeks of your menstrual cycle. First, stand up in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips.

Watch for difference in the size of the breasts, alteration of the shape, redness or other skin alterations, any bulging or retraction and retracted nipples. Wet your hands or take some body lotion and go in a lying position. Now palpate both sides clockwise to detect any lumps and do not forget to examine the armpits as well.

National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends the following technique for breast self-examination: 1. In the shower Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the centre, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening or www.connector.ae

hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your healthcare provider.

2. In front of a mirror Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match, few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side.

3. Lying down When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall.

Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head.

Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit.

Use light, medium, and firm pressure.

Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

What Are The Different Cancer Treatments Available?

The treatments used depend on the cancer itself, its size and stage (whether it has spread), the grade of the cancer cells, and whether it is hormone responsive as CONNECTOR OCTOBER 49

Dr Miriam Klimek of Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, “ The treatment depends on the kind of breast cancer, the size of the tumour, the affected lymph nodes and if the cancer has already spread to other organs. In most of the cases the first step is an operation, followed by further treatment such as radiation and medical therapy. Common therapy include antihormonal treatments, antibody treatment is less frequent. For advanced stages chemotherapy might apply.”

Which Women Are More Likely To Have A Breast Cancer?

The risk for breast cancer increases with age and density of breast tissue. Women over the age of 50 have 80 percent likelier chance.

Dr Miriam Klimek of Mediclinic Al Sufouh says, ”Smoking, alcohol, hormone replacement for a duration over 7 years as well as obesity and lacking physical exercise are also known risk factors. Apart from that, menstruation at an early age, late menopause, childlessness or first pregnancy at an elder age as well as precancerous lesions or radiation in childhood increase the risk.”

Dr Talat Masroor of RAK Hospital says, “Women who got their periods very early in life and menopause later in life are more susceptible to breast cancer. Similarly women who did not have children or had them after the age of 30 also run a high risk since their oestrogen level is high 50 OCTOBER CONNECTOR

some breast cancers are stimulated by oestrogen. Other risk factors include alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity.”

Myths Associated With Breast Cancer Anything that lacks medical evidence is considered a myth. It’s always important to consult your doctor and follow their advice.

Dr Marlain Mubarak of Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “There are several myths associated with risk of breast cancer such as drinking milk (or dairy) causes breast cancer, finding a lump in the breast means breast cancer, men do not get breast cancer; it affects women only and antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer. The most dangerous myth is that mammogram or breast biopsy can cause breast cancer to spread. “ Dr Talat Masroor of RAK Hospital says, “There are several myths associated with breast cancer.

For example, people often think that use of perfumes and antiperspirants, and bruises on the breast can cause the cancer which is not the case. Similarly some people believe that herbs can cure the cancer which, again, is a false claim.

Moreover, contrary to general perception, young women are also susceptible to breast cancer, especially if there’s a family history.”

Pink Caravan Ride

- A Breast Cancer Awareness Initiative

P ink Caravan Ride is a breast cancer awareness initiative under Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), a UAE civil society organisation established in 1999.

Pink Caravan Ride was founded in 2011 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Founder and Royal Patron of FOCP, International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC and wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. The initiative has offered more than 64,000 free clinical examinations since its inception including 18,630 mammograms and 2,945 ultrasounds.

The initiative has already offered cancer awareness sessions and free check-ups through 11 awareness activations that were provided using different Pink Caravan services www.connector.ae

between April and September across several emirates this year. Screenings have been conducted for employees of different entities such as Sharjah Directorate of Human Resources, Chalhoub Group, RAK Courts Department and RAK Women’s Jail.

Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, Director General of FOCP and Head of the Pink Caravan Ride Medical and Awareness Committee says, "In the past nine years, Pink Caravan has been able to detect more than 73 positive cases after delivering over 64,000 free clinical examinations across all seven emirates.

S kin is the largest organ of the human body and any problems related to it can vary greatly. Skin issues can be temporary or permanent, painful or painless, or severe or mild. Some can be minor, and some can be life threatening. Skin related issues that worry us in our day-to-day life and are reason behind frequent dermatologist appointments include acnes, fungal infections, pigmentation, dark circles, hairfall and more. According to Dr Fiona Cowie, Specialist Family Medicine, Aesthetica Clinic Dubai, the three most common skin issues are: 1. Dull, environmentally damaged skin which leads to premature ageing 2. How Can We Treat These Common Skin Issues?

“Chemical peeling is considered as an adjunctive treatment for active acne lesions, as well as for the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scars. Newer methods like microdermabrasion, microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), mesotherapy, fractional lasers are all tools in the armamentarium of a dermatologist, to deal with the post-acne damages. High glycemic index diets may be associated with acne.

Limited data suggests that dairy, particularly skimmed milk, may worsen acne”, suggests Dr Varsha Arun of Aster Clinic in Karama.

Dr Nelly Mohamed Hussein, Expert Dermatologist of Kaya Skin Clinic says, “When acne develops acne scars, we tend to prescribe micro-needling, or RF, or CONNECTOR OCTOBER 53

Things To Do Before You Visit A Doctor Here are a couple of things, you should do before you make an appointment with a dermatologist: Review your current skin care and makeup. Throw out old creams past their expiry date and invest in a medical grade new skin care regime. This may resolve the issue without needing further treatments.

See the GP to establish if there are any hormonal issues causing acne. This can be assessed by simple blood tests and the GP may suggest antibiotic therapy. You should always have active acne treated before undergoing any aesthetic procedures.

Check your skin to make sure the pigment is cosmetic and not a mole or skin cancer. If in doubt see your GP or dermatologist.

We enter the Hammam room and walk through the hazy steam to lie down on the marble slab. This quite elaborative bath ritual ‘Zaaz Hammam Malaki’ starts off with a light body massage and inhalation of aromatic oils. The therapist then scrubs the full body with black soap mix and then scrubs it off with the kessa glove. We are surprised with the amount of dead skin that rolls off. Each scrub application was followed by a good shower bath. The bath continues with a green tea scrub, hair massage with organic oil mix, green tea infused ghassoul body wrap and finishes off with a final whitening herbal mask for the face, and a shower for one last time.

We sip Moroccon herbal tea with biscuits served in a beautiful silver set as we take some time off in the relaxation room, before we go back to face the crazy world.

M aking money out of the money you earn is the wisest way to multiply your wealth. Take the first step towards it and open a saving account and earn interest on your savings in your accounts. There are a number of accounts to choose from. Some pay interest annually, some pay monthly, some let you withdraw your money, some do not, and some cap the withdrawal limits. There are saving accounts complying with Sharia laws as well.

One thing is common, they all work towards multiplying your savings big or small.
