Start The Year With The Right Diet

EDITOR’S NOTE Happy New Year to each and everyone one of you. It was slightly over 6 years ago that Dubai was confirmed as the host city of World Expo 2020 and since then we have seen, everywhere across Dubai, the build up to this great event. Anticipation and excitement is now getting even higher as the build up to the opening on 20th October this year gains momentum. This is all set be an amazing year for Dubai and the UAE, and we are so excited about it. That is later in the year and 2020 is not waiting over 9 months to get going, far from it. The beginning of a new year always features the amazing Dubai Shopping Festival, which started at the end of December and continues throughout this month. This years 25th edition is one of the biggest DSF's yet, and in this issue on pages 18 to 21 we run down the different events, concerts and activations you can expect across shopping malls in Dubai. For a lot of us, the new year starts with intentions of making some lifestyle changes, with food and health being at the top of that. This issue we look at some of the diets that are worth trying out for those that want to lose a bit of extra weight, and also take a look at food intolerances, what they are and how identifying them can help lead a healthier lifestyle. It's another great issue with loads to keep the family informed and updated, as well as more amazing competitions with some great prizes, free for you to enter. Enjoy the issue and enjoy the month and from all of us here at Connector, we wish you a healthy and prosperous 2020!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DUBAI?

Here at Connector, we love our city and know you do too! We asked our readers to share their favourite things, best experiences and happiest times with us. Here are some of our favourite responses. Wael Elaloul from Canada said: "I have lived in Dubai for 7 years and visit Dubai Mall nearly every weekend and one thing I never get bored of is the fountains. It doesn't matter what I am at the mall for and how long I want to be there for, I will always make a point of going out to see a fountain show. They are so amazing and the look of delight on all the visitors faces as they stare at the dancing fountains makes me feel very proud of the city I live in.

Reema Bhatia from India said: "Dubai is a great place to be this time of year, the weather is absolutely awesome and gives you every single reason not to stay inside and to venture out and take in everything that this fabulous city offers. Whether it is daytime on the beach and in the desert, or in the evening walking in between the big towers, this time of year is the best for enjoying Dubai.

Christine Norman from America said: "My favorite thing about Dubai is the contrast between old and new and how both are celebrated. The iconic towers like Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab are known the world over and put Dubai on the map, and the old parts of Bur Dubai with the Dubai Museam and Al Fahidi area remind us of rich culture, traditions and heritage before oil was found."

Praveen Hussein from India said: "I love the way anything can get delivered to your home almost 24 hours a day, food, groceries, medicines and even petrol for your car. The convenience gives me more time to relax with the family and shows also how Dubai is one of the most technically advanced cities in the world." What do you think about Dubai? CONNECTOR CHAMPIONS

Spreading happiness around the world

with a bottle of water

As part of a series of features on individuals in the UAE who are using their skills and experience to give something back to the community, this month Connector meets an Emirati philanthropist on a mission to spread a message of kindness, compassion and giving back to society.

E mirati philanthropist Omar Abdulla Khalfan 34, an engineer by profession is the chief kind officer at Be Kind, an organisation which was launched in 2018 with a mission to spread a message of compassion, kindness and giving back to society by helping those in need. Zayed Water, a packaged water company, is the first brand of Be Kind and is dedicated to donating 100% of its profits to help combat the scarcity of water around the world. For Omar, he is a firm believer of the philosophies of the founder of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and wants to align Zayed Water’s mission and vision with virtues of kindness, generosity and compassion, that the late Sheikh Zayed is known for. The project, Zayed Water, is one of the ways for Omar Abdulla Khalfan to carry forward the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed, doing what Sheikh Zayed believed in the most. 10 JANUARY CONNECTOR

Connector met with Omat Abdulla Khalfan and spent time with him speaking about his mission. How Did The Idea Of Creating The Brand Zayed Water Take Shape? You can survive without many things, but existence without water is impossible. When I read reports citing the number of deaths around the world for not having access to clean drinking water, it makes me sad but as a professional it puts private sectors like us in charge of taking the responsibility to provide clean water to those in need. The business is not meant to generate profits but to give back to the community. You Could Choose To Donate An Amount Of Money To Construct Wells Around The World, Why Did You Choose To Start A Water Brand Instead? One of the reasons behind starting the Zayed Water venture was to create a platform #connectordubai

CONNECTOR CHAMPIONS where people could purchase something, and 100% profit will go to a cause. Zayed Water is a platform where we involve community to contribute. The project is sustainable, and we are in a position to help those in need for an infinite time, rather than helping them for one-off time. I invested Dhs 250,000 as a start-up cost to set up the company instead of donating the cash, now the company is running, and it can contribute a much bigger amount to create a sustainable impact on people’s lives. Involving community in a project of this nature helps in bringing a change in mindset of those people who may not realise that millions of people who don't have access to clean water are suffering in this world, and they can help. How Do The Profit Donations Benefit People? We started the company in May 2019, we donated the first quarter’s 100% profit of Dhs 52,700 in September 2019, the money is now being used to construct wells in seven countries including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Tzaksitan through our charity partner Emirates Red Crescent. The work is under construction and is expected to finish in March 2020. We will be donating profits every four months. In January, we will be donating almost double the amount, thanks to all the kind forces who are appreciating the project and contributing to it. What Were The Initial Challenges Faced? It took us three years to figure out each and every detail to set up a company in a legal way. A company with right strategy and a name. Zayed Water project is based on three pillars: www.connector.ae

First pillar is giving back to the community (charity), second pillar is Low Sodium Water (Healthy) and the third one is its name after the founder of the UAE, late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Loyalty). In order to create awareness among the society, we have kept our prices lower than the market prices and provide quality products in competitive prices.

Mountains.

How Do You Source Zayed Water? Zayed Water is a socially responsible and ethical bottled water brand. The bottled water uses 45% less plastic, consumes less energy to manufacture, and also reduces carbon emissions. Zayed Water is sustainably sourced from the natural oasis of Falaj Al Mualla that lies at the foothills of the legendary Hajar

Are You Working On Different Ways To Create Awareness Among UAE Residents? Zayed Water is a very transparent project. We are building a graphic interface at the website, which will show how a profit from each bottle sold is bringing a positive change in the world. It will encompass all numbers and figures as well. Any Other Products You Are Planning To Launch Under The Be Kind Company? We are currently focusing on water. We will look into creating more brands in future, but as of now, our focus is on water and building wells and combat water scarcity around globe. THE REVIEW

Phoenicia at JA Ocean Beach Tower G reg Malouf, the award winning Australian Lebanese Chef well known for bringing a modern twist to traditional Middle Eastern cuisine is back in Dubai as consulting chef at two new restaurants. Phoenicia, a nod to the ancient civilisations originally from Lebanon, are two new restaurants across two Dubai properties, JA Beach Hotel in Jebel Ali and JA Ocean Beach Tower in JBR. On a recent trip to the ever bustling The Walk on JBR we visited Phoenicia at JA Ocean Beach Tower. Recently opened, the décor inside is very simple, clean and light. The menu offers classic Middle Eastern dishes with a twist. To start with we shared a portion of hazelnut falafel and baby squid. Both dishes were generous, offering plenty to share. The baby squid was served as bite sized chunks, accompanied with a very tasty garlic mayonnaise. As tasty as the squid was, the surprise dish was the hazelnut falafel, crispy to bite into, soft on the inside with the nutty flavour adding something totally unexpected, and paired beautifully with crumbled feta. For mains we opted for the lamb ouzi and a staple on any reputable Middle Eastern restaurants menu, the mixed grill. The lamb ouzi, slow cooked for 8 hours did not

www.connector.ae

disappoint and the meat, which fell apart with a gentle touch, was perfectly seasoned and very moist. The mixed grill offered juicy chunks of chicken tawook, spicy lamb kebab and some succulent grilled beef fillet cubes, a dish so generous it would be perfect for two to share. The accompanying mushroom freekah was so tasty we could have been just as happy eating this by itself. For dessert we opted for kunafa and warm chocolate and date cake, but were also “persuaded” to try the baklava ice cream sandwich. The kunafa took around 15 minutes to come, as it was made fresh to order. Beautifully presented in its own metal pan, it was certainly well worth the wait. The chocolate and date cake was just the right level of sweetness and served with a scoop of labneh and a banana caramel sauce. We could see why we were 'persuaded" to try the baklava ice cream sandwich, a refreshing dish to end the meal with a sweet ice cream filling served with a poached pear. With so many Middle Eastern restaurants to visit in Dubai, Phoenicia certainly stands out as one of the top to try. Expect to pay around Dhs 200 per person not including drinks. Call 04-3154444. KIDS & EDUCATION

Making the all important

new school choice

T he month of January is generally regarded the best time to start the application process at schools in Dubai. For first time parents, it can be a taxing task, so here’s a guide on some of the things that can make the admission process simpler and easier for everyone. We got industry experts on board to answer some of the top questions that everyone deals with as they embark on a new journey into the education system: How Early Should Parents Start The Admission Process? With over 200 private schools in Dubai, it is recommended that parents should start considering options 12 to 18 months in advance. It will give them enough time to do research, shortlist three to five top schools of their choice and enrol as soon as the selected schools open their registration process. Victoria Lumby, Vice President Enrolments at GEMS Education says, “Schools open admission for 40 JANUARY CONNECTOR

the following academic year one year in advance, usually in the month of September. Parents need not worry, with many GEMS Education schools in the UAE, we make the process as easy as possible, and do not have deadlines for when parents should complete the process. Admission for new students is ongoing all year round. “ Sharleen Samuelson, Head of Admissions and Enrolment at Raha International School says, “Each school has a separate calendar and applying early will better your chances of getting a place at your first choice school. Be aware of the opening dates and put a reminder in your calendar.” Lisa Whyte, Head of Admissions at Arcadia School says , “It’s recommended to start the research for a new school 12 months in advance. Make your shortlist from your investigation of schools, no more than 4 schools should be chosen #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION from your essential checklist that should include, the curriculum you are wanting, location of the school and the right price.” Hibah Halwani, Admissions Manager At Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS) says, “Depending on when the parents feel their child is ready, they can start the admissions process. The average age of a student starting school in the UAE is 3 to 4 years old. School availability is also something parents need to consider especially with the constant changing economy. We recommend parents start the admissions process in January for a September start.” Should Parents Apply In Multiple Schools? While it is always good to have a back up option ready if you are not able to secure a spot in the school topping on your priority list, it is a must to take into consideration that each application comes with certain fees and requires students to sit down for an assessment. Therefore, it is advisable to not apply to more than three or four schools to save parents from financial burden and children from emotional burden. Asia Minervini, Admissions Manager at Dwight School Dubai says, “I would encourage parents to tour up to five schools, but only apply to their top three. Kindly note, that most schools require www.connector.ae

an application fee and an assessment, it would not be advised to subject your child to more than three assessments.” Yasmin Fiederle, Registrar at Sunmarke School says, “Parents often apply to more than one school in case they are not accepted to their first-choice school however, this can be costly in time and registration fees. We aim to be the school of choice and as we have 2 schools currently available in our group, should we not have space available in one school we will always try and offer a seat, if a similar year group is available, at the alternate school giving more options to our parents.” Tim Richardson, Principal at Raffles International School says, “I would recommend identifying your first choice and calling the registrar and asking for frank and honest guidance about the likelihood of admission. Most schools charge an application fee which is non-refundable and will probably require some kind of admission assessment or interview. Financially, this can be expensive and, more importantly, emotionally may be unsettling for your child repeatedly doing ‘tests’ at different schools. Ideally, children should be part of your selection process and are likely to settle much better if you and they have chosen a school together.” CONNECTOR JANUARY 41

KIDS & EDUCATION What Are The Major Things To Keep In Mind Before Starting The Process? Before you start the application process, it is advisable to prepare a checklist of documents that you may require to attach with the application form. It will save parents time as well as make the process simpler. Tim Richardson of Raffles International School says, “Most schools in Dubai require a small number of key documents in order to finalise admissions. While Dubai school admissions offices are generally open throughout the summer break, not all schools maintain an admin staff on call in July and August, so make sure you have your child’s transfer certificate, previous year’s school reports, immunisation records and any other documentation listed in the new school’s admissions requirements before the summer starts, if you can. This makes the whole process much simpler and therefore quicker.” Yasmin Fiederle of Sunmarke School says, “Depending on the location the child is arriving from, correctly attested documentation, subject to year group requirement, is essential, this is especially important if coming from overseas and entering Year 3 and above.” Before you start the application process, it is important to learn to not take rejection personally. Hibah Halwani of JBS says, “It is essential for parents to remember that the admissions process is, in many cases, not done to 42 JANUARY CONNECTOR

determine whether a student will be accepted or not to a school, but instead carried out to evaluate the student's readiness for school as well as helping the school to identify any learning needs they may have. We find that the admissions process helps to prepare everyone, students, family and the school, for a smoother transition and to help offer any required learning support resources whether at school or at home.” What Are The General Timelines For The Admission Process? In general, the admissions process takes 3 to 5 days, primary admissions are generally quicker than secondary where there may be subject options to review with an academic counsellor before joining classes. Asia Minervini of Dwight School Dubai says, “Exact registration dates for a given academic year vary from school to school, however most schools open for admission 12 months in advance. If you can, try to secure your seat by January, as many schools will fill up quickly in specific grades that are more in demand.” Yasmin Fiederle of Sunmarke School says, “Once an application is submitted we aim to complete the admissions process within 2 weeks if the student is available for the entry assessment. Timings will vary depending on whether it is an immediate admission request or for a later term or year. Typically most parents apply between 3 and 12 months #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION ahead of the admission date. We aim to send an offer to a successful candidate with 4 days of taking the entry assessment.” What Is The Policy With Regards Fees Paid And Transfer To Another School? The KHDA sets out a framework for school transfers and this is followed by all Dubai Schools. This policy is available on request. Victoria Lumby of GEMS Education says, “The refund of fees is in line with the school regulators such as KHDA. However, with the number of GEMS Education schools that we have, families who want to move often do so within the network, and therefore we support to make this process seamless. In cases where this happens, we will transfer the fees between our schools to ensure that our parents are not out of pocket.” Sharleen Samuelson of Raha International School says, “It is important to ask for the written refund policy before paying if you are still holding out for availability in another school. For families that move overseas, schools should be more

understanding of the circumstances and you may be able to get even a very late refund.” Suggestions By Industry Experts Hibah Halwani of JBS says, "Parents should not stress about the admissions process and should involve the children in the process. At JBS, we advise that once the parents make a decision on their final school choices to take the child to the school to show them the campus and allow them to interact with people in school. This will help parents make a decision that they are confident with.” Sharleen Samuelson of Raha International School says, “Remember that you are not just choosing a school for your child, but a community for your family to be a part of. Find one where you and your child will feel safe and happy.” Yasmin Fiederle Of Sunmarke School says, “If coming from overseas and English is not your first language please prepare your children by finding good English Language Programs even a short course can build your child's confidence when entering a new school and curriculum.”

BIRTHDAYS

Children can say

the funniest things

We love our children unconditionally, of that there is no doubt. But they're also capable of bringing us joy and laughter in the most unexpected ways. Here at Connector we love sharing your hilarious parenting stories, the ones that only the mind of a child can engineer. These are just a few of those moments, all featuring kids with birthdays this month. Happy birthday you lot! Sophie Claire Dias 6 years old on 10th January Cambridge International School Funny moment: Sophie seemed quite excited when learning about dinosaurs at school. So we asked if she would be interested in becoming a Paleontologist when she grows up. She innocently replied, “What will I do becoming a Paleontologist? They are already done finding all the dinosaur bones. That’s how we are learning about them, no more bones left for me to find” Aakriti Singh 4 years old on 12th January The Winchester School Funny moment: One day we were passing an ice-cream parlour and she requested an ice-cream. As she had a cold and cough I gave the excuse that I did not have money and she replied with her astonished expression “I am not able to understand how we are surviving without money”. Jan Paul Alhaddad 9 years old on 11th January Almawakeb School, Al Garhoud Funny moment: We were at Jumeirah Christmas Festival, and I had to park far as the entrance was closed due to traffic. It was a 10 minute walk to reach the car, and Jan made a rap song to the Jingle Bells rhyme about me making him walk the distance.

Aliya Sheik 6 years old on 19th January The Indian High School Funny moment: Aliya always talks about how she could never be at our wedding and when she is asked where she was, she replies that she was in my stomach at that time. This makes us laugh every time.

Samaher Abdur Rahim 6 years old on 19th January Habitat School Al Tallah Funny moment: A few months back my wife showed our wedding pictures to our 5 year old daughter. She cried like anything why we did not take her with us. I love that she actually thought that we did not take her at our wedding party on purpose.

Have your children said something that has set you off in belly fulls of laughter and made your friends chuckle? If they have and they are celebrating a birthday in February, email admin@connector-dubai.com a picture and a few words on what it is they said that made you laugh, and we will publish the top ones next month. Include their age, date of birth and the school they go to. Congratulations to Sophie Claire Dias, who has won a two kilo of designer cake from Brownie Point.

ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT-HEALTHBAY

Container Baby Syndrome (CBS) CBS is an umbrella term for physical and developmental problems caused by a child spending too much time in a 'baby container'. As a parent you’ve surely noticed the variety of baby equipment that is sold in baby shops: nursing pillows, sleepy heads, cocooners, snooze pods, cushions, loungers, bouncer chairs, swings, seats, jumpers, walkers. These products seem very attractive, colorful and come with straps, music, flashlights, vibration and rocking options. They promise to keep your baby safe on their back, entertained and stimulated at the same time. They are a convenient way to create 'hands free' time for parents or to keep babies safe from enthusiast siblings and pets. OVERUSE of these equipments is a big problem. If throughout the day, a baby is switched from one container to the next and is always strapped up safely on its back, the opportunity it gets to move is reduced. This LACK OF MOVEMENT can quickly lead to underdeveloped muscles, physical stamina and developmental problems, decreased strength, balance and coordination causing: • Delays in motor development: poor head control, not rolling over, dislike for tummy time. • Head preference for one side in combination with a tilt: torticollis • Tightness and asymmetry in the whole body; babies that move through arching and side bending. • Flat spots on the back of the head sometimes with secondary facial deformities: plagiocephaly

MOH NO: OM81120

48 JANUARY CONNECTOR

• Sensory processing difficulties, visual tracking problems From birth onwards a baby needs to LEARN TO MOVE, to develop strength, balance and coordination to achieve milestones. HELP your baby by creating safe situations where it gets the opportunity to move, to explore, to practice, to work against gravity. Stimulate them to lift, hold and turn their heads, to kick, to push of and to wiggle in different positions. Offer your baby 'horizontal play time' on a mat, on the floor, in a play pen. When awake, alternate between TummyTime, supine and time on the side. Use a baby carrier instead of a stroller and carry your baby in different positions.

Be mindful over the amount of time your child spends in a container at home and in daycare. Brenda Steegmans

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Do you have a

food intolerance?

A food intolerance, or a food sensitivity occurs when a person has difficulty digesting a particular food. This can lead to symptoms such as intestinal gas, abdominal pain or diarrhoea. Lina Doumani, Clinical Dietitian at Allied Medical Center says, “A food intolerance means either the body cannot properly digest the food that is eaten, or that a particular food might irritate the digestive system. Often it is due to lack of a certain enzyme in the lining of the small intestine or insufficiency of that specific enzyme for that particular food.” Bloating and stomach ache are the common signs of food intolerance, however these are not the sure shot signs. Dr Zahid Saeed, General Practitioner at Dubai London Clinic says, “Difficulty in digestion of certain food and having symptoms like bloating, tummy pain usually after few hours of having food; many people think that they have food www.connector.ae

intolerance but their symptoms maybe attributed to something else .” How Is Food Intolerance Different From Food Allergy? While food intolerance symptoms can go unnoticed and cause some kind of uneasiness with less serious consequences; reactions from food allergies are instant and can do serious damage to the health. The reaction can cause symptoms such as coughing, throat tightness, hoarseness, abdominal pain, vomiting, hives, drop blood pressure, and sometimes swelling. Dr Sanjeev Kumar Rastogi, Specialist Gastroenterology at Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “ Food allergies are another kind of food hypersensitivity but are dissimilar in terms of their mechanism of action. Food allergies, like other allergies are caused by our immune system due to release of CONNECTOR JANUARY 49

HEALTH & WELLBEING histamine and typically gives a fast and almost immediate reaction. Food intolerance can also go unnoticed by consuming only a small amount and are largely non-lethal, whereas even a small quantity can flare up the allergy which can be lethal if not corrected in time. Dr Basil Khaled Moh’d Nasrallah, Consultant Pediatrician at Emirates Speciality Hospital says, “Food intolerances involve the digestive system. Food allergies involve the immune system that affects numerous organs in the body. With a food allergy, even a microscopic amount of the food has the potential to lead to a serious or life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis." Ruba Elhourani, Senior Clinical Dietician at RAK Hospital says, “Food allergy can be potentially lifethreatening since it can affect the immune system and consequently numerous body organs. Food intolerance on the other hand is mainly limited to the digestive system, and can be prevented as well if certain foods are eaten in small amounts or avoided. For example, people who suffer from lactose intolerance do have the alternative of drinking lactose-free milk or consuming lactase enzyme pills to help with the digestion.” What Are The Most Common Examples Of Food Intolerance? Generally foods that cause intolerance in the body include dairy products, grains that contain gluten and foods that can lead to acidity, such as beans, cabbage and others. 50 JANUARY CONNECTOR

In lactose intolerance, the body can't digest lactose (milk sugar) found in milk and milk products. Dr Sanjeev Kumar Rastogi of Canadian Specialist Hospital sums up the most common food intolerances as follows: • Dairy - Lactose in dairy products are broken down by the enzyme lactase. Absence of the enzyme causes an inability to digest milk and milk products resulting in diarrhoea, stomach pain, bloating and nausea • Gluten - Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten intolerance can be due to celiac disease or other factors yet unknown. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease which can attack the digestive system. However, people who have tested negative for celiac disease have also had a milder version of gluten intolerance called ‘non-celiac gluten sensitivity’. • Caffeine - Found in our coffee, tea and sodas, caffeine is a chemical that blocks adenosine, a neurotransmitter which regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Most of us can consume a decent amount of caffeine without any side-effects. Those intolerant due to an inability to metabolise or secrete the chemical out of the body can suffer from anxiety, insomnia and rapid heartbeat. • Salicylates - These compounds are found in a variety of natural (fruit, vegetables, tea, coffee, spice, nuts honey) and man-made products (as preservative, medicines). Salicylate intolerance can cause sinus #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING infection, nasal congestion, asthma, diarrhoea, hives etc. • Amines - A by product of fermentation and food storage amines are found in dry fruits, cured meats, cheese, vinegar or anything fermented. Histamine is the most common amine and most people can metabolise it, but those who can’t can present with headache, itching, hives, anxiety, cramps, diarrhoea etc. • Additives - Additives in different foods can cause intolerance in some people. Additives are used to enhance flavours, make foods look more appealing, and to increase their shelf life. Examples of food additives include: antioxidants, artificial colourings, artificial flavourings, emulsifiers, flavour enhancers, preservatives and sweeteners. Dr Zahid Saeed of Dubai London Clinic lists the name of food products for which people generally develop intolerance: • Lactose - milk, yoghurt , ice cream • Wheat - bread , cereal , pasta , cookies, pizza • Gluten - pasta , bread , crackers • Caffeine - tea, coffee, chocolate, green tea • Histamine - present in mushrooms, pickles, and cured food • Additives - artificial sweeteners, colouring, or other flavourings What Causes Food Intolerance? Food intolerance can be caused due to absence of an enzyme, reaction to additives in foods, increased sensitivity of the gut due www.connector.ae

to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, stress and psychological factors. Dr Zahid Saeed of Dubai London Clinic says, “Absence of enzymes which digest food for example in people with milk intolerance do not produce enough lactase to digest lactose, hence it stays in the body for long and causes symptoms. Stress can also trigger symptoms. IBS, a chronic condition causes diarrhoea, constipation or cramping in the abdomen.” “Celiac a chronic digestive condition which is caused by gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. The symptoms can include diarrhoea, bloating and unexpected weight loss. It does involve immune system and has some features of true food allergy. But people with celiac are not at risk of anaphylaxis.” What Are The Early Signs Of Food Intolerance? The most common early signs are abdominal pain, bloating, gas, however these are not very severe and you don’t need to visit the emergency department and can schedule a regular doctors appointment. Ruba Elhourani of RAK Hospital says, “The most common food intolerance signs and symptoms include irregular bowel movements, constipation or diarrhoea, and insomnia. At times the symptoms can be similar to food allergy signs, such as itching or tingling in the mouth.” Dr Sanjeev Kumar Rastogi of Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “Common symptoms of food intolerance are stomach CONNECTOR JANUARY 51

HEALTH & WELLBEING troubles such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea which can be distinguished from allergy reactions. Since food intolerance is non-lethal there is no need to panic and go to the ER. You can comfortably schedule an appointment with the doctor.” What Are The Common Tests To Identify Food Intolerance? Some of the most effective methods include elimination, keeping a diary and specific blood tests. Doctors can recommend any of these tests based on one’s condition. Dr Sanjeev Kumar Rastogi of Canadian Specialist Hospital says, “Apart from lactose intolerance and celiac disease, there is no accurate, reliable, and validated test to identify food intolerance. The best diagnostic tool is an exclusion diet, also known as an elimination or diagnostic diet. In a typical exclusion diet, the suspected food is removed from the diet for a set period, usually between 2 weeks and 2 months. If during this period the adverse reactions resolve, it becomes more likely that the culprit has been found. This

52 JANUARY CONNECTOR

can be further confirmed if it is then reintroduced and symptoms return.” Dr Zahid Saeed of Dubai London Clinic says, “There are simple things which people can try, like keeping a food diary and making a note of the food consumed, the kind of symptoms and timing of symptoms in relation to when food is consumed.” Ruba Elhourani of RAK Hospital says, “Food intolerances can be gauged by a blood test which evaluates the response of our immune system to certain foods and measures the levels of allergy-related antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). The blood sample is then sent to a laboratory, where different foods can be tested.” Are Food Intolerances Treatable? The good news is that you're not necessarily destined to have these food sensitivities forever. When the offending foods are removed from the diet and the body is given time to heal, many people no longer react to the same foods. this is known as tolerance, It takes time, diligence, and discipline.

10 diets to help achieve

your weight loss goals

N ow is the time to set new goals for the year, and if weight loss is one of them, you should know that abs are made in the kitchen. Diet plays a crucial role in your weight loss journey. Here is a beginners’ guide to the most popular diets which can help you lose weight. Before you pick any diet, it is always advisable to consult with qualified dieticians to make sure it does not collide with any of your health conditions. The Paleo Diet The paleo diet is based on foods which were consumed by our ancestors at least 10,000 years ago. A paleo diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds - foods that in the past could be obtained by hunting and gathering. This diet eliminates foods 54 JANUARY CONNECTOR

which became common and popular after the farming concept emerged. In general, paleo diets allow fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean meats (especially grassfed animals or wild game), fish (especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna) and oils from fruit and nuts, such as olive oil or walnut oil. The diet avoids grains, such as wheat, oats and barley, legumes, such as beans, lentils, peanuts and peas, dairy products, refined sugar, salt, potatoes and highly processed foods in general. The diet helps in losing weight, improving glucose tolerance, controlling blood pressure, and managing appetite levels. The Vegan Diet With major celebrities from Hollywood to sports starts becoming vegan for life, #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING the trend seems to have become popular among many across the globe. The vegan diet is considered to be ethical and good for the environment and health. The diet is based purely on plant based food and excludes all animal products, including meat, eggs and dairy. Vegan diets seem very effective at helping people naturally reduce the amount of calories they eat, resulting in weight loss. Keto Diet Keto diet is a low carb and high-fat diet. The diet drastically reduces the carb consumption and replaces it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis, a state that enables the body to burn fat for energy. Ketogenic diets can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. The diet allows meat, fatty fish, eggs, butter and cream, cheese, nuts and seeds, healthy oils such as olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil; avocados, lowcarb vegetables such as greens, tomatoes, onions, peppers; and condiments such as salt, pepper and spices. The diet avoids sugary foods, grains, fruit, beans, legumes, root vegetables, low fat diet products, sauces, unhealthy fats, alcohol and sugar free diet foods. The Dukan Diet The diet is suitable to those who want to shed a few kilos quickly without hunger. www.connector.ae

The Dukan diet starts by calculating your goal weight-called your "true" weight based on your age, weight loss history, and other factors. These are the four phases of the Dukan diet. The first one is the attack phase (1 to 7 days) when you start the diet by eating unlimited lean protein plus 1 and a half tablespoons of oat bran per day. The second phase is called the cruise phase (1 to 12 months) when you alternate lean protein one day with lean protein and non-starchy vegetables, plus 2 tablespoons of oat bran every day. The third and fourth phases are for weight maintenance. The third phase, known as the consolidation phase, allows eating unlimited lean protein and vegetables, some carbs and fats, one day of lean protein weekly, 2 and a half tablespoons of oat bran daily; and the fourth phase, the stabilisation phase follows the consolidation phase guidelines but loosens the rules as long as your weight remains stable. Oat bran is increased to 3 tablespoons per day. The Atkins diet The Atkins diet is a low-carb diet, usually recommended for weight loss. The diet advisors claim that you can lose weight while eating as much protein and fat as you want, as long as you avoid foods high in carbs. The main dietary focus of the CONNECTOR JANUARY 55

HEALTH & WELLBEING Atkins diet is eating the right balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats for optimal weight loss and health. According to the Atkins diet, obesity and related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, are the fault of the typical low-fat, high-carbohydrate American diet. The Atkins diet says that you don't need to avoid fatty cuts of meat or trim off excess fat. Rather, controlling carbs is what's important. Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. It’s not a diet in the conventional sense but more accurately described as an eating pattern. Common intermittent fasting methods involve daily 16-hour fasts or fasting for 24 hours, twice per week. Fasting has been a practice throughout human evolution. Ancient hunter-gatherers didn't have supermarkets, refrigerators or food available all year round. Sometimes they couldn't find anything to eat. As a result, humans evolved to be able to function without food for extended periods of time. The proponents of this diet say that fasting from time to time is more natural than always eating 3 to 4 (or more) meals per day. 56 JANUARY CONNECTOR

TLC Diet The TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) diet was created by the National Institute of Health’s National Cholesterol Education Program with the goal of cutting cholesterol as part of a heart-healthy eating regimen. On the TLC diet, you'll be eating lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or non-fat dairy products, fish and skin-off poultry. The Zone Diet The Zone Diet instructs its followers to stick to eating a specific ratio of 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. As part of the diet, carbs should have a low glycemic index, which means they provide a slow release of sugar into the blood to keep you fuller for longer. Protein should be lean and fat should be mostly monounsaturated. The diet helps you lose fat at the fastest rate possible, slow down aging, reduce your risk of chronic disease and improve your performance. A main meal such as breakfast, lunch or dinner contains three to five zone blocks, while a snack always contains one zone block. Each zone block is made of a protein block, a fat block and a carb block. • Protein block contains 7 grams of protein. • Carb block contains 9 grams of carbs. • Fat block contains 1.5 grams of fat. #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean diet is based on the traditional foods that people used to eat in countries like Italy and Greece back in 1960. Researchers noted that these people were exceptionally healthy and had a low risk of many lifestyle diseases. Numerous studies have now shown that the Mediterranean diet can cause weight loss and help prevent heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes and premature death. One can eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, breads, herbs, spices, fish, seafood and extra virgin olive oil. Poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt should be eaten in moderation. The diet strongly avoids sugar-sweetened beverages, added sugars, processed meat, refined grains, refined oils and other highly processed foods. The GM Diet The GM diet plan is broken up into seven days, each with strict rules about which

www.connector.ae

food groups you can consume. The diet can supposedly help you lose up to 6.8kg in just one week, get rid of toxins and impurities in your body, improve your digestion and enhance your body's ability to burn fat. Day one includes eating any fruit except bananas, day two includes vegetables in raw or cooked form except potatoes, day three includes eating fruit and vegetable except banana and potato, day four you can consume only 6 to 8 bananas and 3 glasses of skimmed milk, on day five, eat two 284g portions of beef, chicken or fish, and 6 whole tomatoes, vegetarians may replace meat with either brown rice or cottage cheese. Day six, you can eat only two 284g portions of beef, chicken or fish, unlimited vegetables except potatoes. Vegetarians can replace meat with cottage cheese or brown rice. On day seven, eat only brown rice, fruit, fruit juice and vegetables.

How to start Pilates

if you’re a beginner

T he first time you take a new fitness class can be intimidating! Especially if you’ve seen Instagram videos of famous people doing crazy-looking things on the Pilates equipment. If you’ve wanted to try it but are intimidated by all these videos, then now is a good time to start. Pilates offers numerous benefits to any type of body, regardless of your fitness background. Pilates is a movement program developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. He called it “Contrology”, but after his death in 1967, it was practiced worldwide and known as “The Pilates Method” or Pilates. It improves your posture, strengthens your core, focuses on body alignment and in general helps you move better through life. Here are some tips on where to start: 1. Make a call to a Pilates studio that’s close to your house (it should be convenient or chances are you won’t continue). Speak to the front desk and get information on free trials or beginner classes - most studios will offer at least one trial class. 62 JANUARY CONNECTOR

2. Try and start with a few Mat classes. As exciting as it is to want to jump on to a reformer, your patience will pay off. Get comfortable with Pilates terminology on the Mat before you hear it on a machine you’ve never used before. You’ll be hearing lines like, “curl your pelvis”, “keep your scapula down”, “legs at table top”. Studios like The Pad in Dubai actually have a ‘Pilates Fundamentals’ class to help you understand these basics of Pilates before you start a normal class. 3. Take a friend along! Every new thing is less intimidating (and more fun) with a partner. 4. If you have any kind of injury or pain, ensure you speak to the instructor in advance, they may recommend you start with a few private classes based on the severity of your injury. 5. Have fun! Pilates is the best gift you can give to your body, so jump in and enjoy it. Inputs from Shaazia Qureishi - Co-founder of Yasmin Karachiwala's The Pad - Pilates And Dance #connectordubai
