welcome to dubai

Welcome to our city

Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE

Just 46 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Founding father of the UAE

A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.

www.discover-dubai.ae

Government

The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.9 million people. Around 88% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

City basics Local time The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving. Currency The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One Ruble = Dhs 0.059 One GBP = Dhs 5.06 One Yuan = Dhs 0.58 One Euro = Dhs 4.46 One Rupee = Dhs 0.055 Language The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. Here are some Arabic phrases to help you: Hello - marhaba Welcome - ahlan wa sahlan Goodbye - maa-salaama God willing - in shaa'Allah Yes - naam No - laa Let's go - yalla 6 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

Please - min fadlak Thank you - shukran How much? - bikam? Price - si'r Where is...? - ayna...? Right - yamiin Left - yasaar

Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Public display of affection The UAE is an Islamic country, and these acts are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.

Alcohol Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

Ladies first Most public services have a women's-only queue or section, so you may use them where applicable. www.discover-dubai.ae

The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.

Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 7

welcome to dubai

Is Ramadan just feasting & famine? By: Salamah Ghudayer The balance between being spoiled in a big, modern city like Dubai and then the discipline, modesty and submission found in a religion can be two directions some people have trouble connecting. That alone is a struggle not just for non-Muslims to fathom but is something Muslims must deal with and be accountable for. The holy month of Ramadan is when this becomes most prevalent. Many expats friends are sure it is a month of ‘daytime don’ts’ and a few say they dread the months arrival. I try to equate this attitude to someone sitting for an exam and they are nervous. Yet if you have the tools you need, are prepared and open minded for this challenge, then the test in itself is not a setback, but actually represents an opening door, a moving forward; for both Muslim and not, as the hard lessons and homework by test day are now past. Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of faith or required acts of worship in Islam. Belief, daily prayers and required charity come before. Those are the lessons, skills and homework I am talking 8 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

about. Those alone can’t help but alter and humble the person. Then comes Ramadan with its fast of food and water from sunrise to sunset as only one part of the holy month. Ramadan is a complete alteration of a lifestyle, meant to favour the soul and discipline the mind and body. At each sunset in Ramadan, the breaking of the fast is done as recommended by Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), with dates, water and prayer. This eases the body back to accepting food in a healthy way. An Iftar - breakfast meal follows the sunset prayer and the evening becomes busy with the regular night prayer, extra evening prayers called Tarawih, late night prayers called Qiyam a Layl, reading the Quran, rest and waking for a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor. Checking on neighbours, family and the poor is also recommended, as is inviting people to share your food since it is written in Islam that the amount for one is sufficient for two. The Iftar is often the equivalent of a regular meal, plus some favourite snacks or refreshments. Quite often the meal gets smaller as the month progresses because the body simply #discover_dxb

welcome to dubai can’t consume what it would prior to Ramadan. ‘The eyes are bigger than the stomach’ is often repeated by friends who are filled from a few bites and remembrance to cook less. The mythical plate of three-mealsin one really does not exist. The evenings are then full of prayer, reading and visiting which are time consuming, so being tired is more of a struggle than hunger. As daytime comes; most Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, as an act of worship to our creator. However, many believe this month is only about the fast and some mistake it for a diet. This holy month is actually not about the body at all. Ramadan is a month to focus on the soul. All year long we feed our hunger, comfort our cravings and try to pacify our wants. The day time fast for a month is a huge challenge, requiring commitment and patience but we do it, because we are promised reward for the struggle from God. Yet the fast is also a tool for improvement. What we think we ‘need’, we learn is just a ‘want’. We notice we can interact with people without food or a cup of tea. We notice the people more in general as we know what they are going through just like ourselves; we become one team. We can’t help but wonder where the people are who feel this tiredness and tinges of hunger all year round or who still do not have what we do as the sun sets and become determined to seek them out. There is a peacefulness that enjoins the slower pace and a consciousness with the daily efforts and the bites of food at sunset become blessings. They didn’t always seem as such the months prior to Ramadan, when hunger meant ‘get food,’ maybe post where I get to eat and continue on until I want something again. That is a flow of confusion between needs and wants we all get into. We survive just fine with much less in Ramadan. Life doesn’t or shouldn’t stop. The schedule really shouldn’t change and the shortened working hours are really just an allowance of a few extra hours to prepare or get ahead www.discover-dubai.ae

on the evenings worship and preparation for visitors. For our non-Muslim neighbours get in the spirit with us and set some goals for your Ramadan experience. Perhaps choose: • Fast every day for a week or the whole month. • Fast like some older Muslim children around 2pm until sunset to excitedly await the call to prayer. • Complete reading whatever life improving manual you choose, a holy book or a translation of the Quran. • Seek out people in hard circumstances and give them a gift in respectable ways as if you were gifting a friend. • Donate in the ways of the Prophet’s wives by giving gently used items which have been cleaned, scented and arranged nicely. • Spread peace with your patience while driving and smile at others; it’s a source of charity in Islam. • Attend an Iftar with Muslims or invite them over for Iftar - yes you can! Ramadan is one month about focusing on the needs of the soul; which is inherently good, charitable, devoted and deep in its basic need for peace in this world. The body and mind, with worries, needs and desires are up to you to discipline and moderate, just as how you chose to use your focus and time in Ramadan. The community is all doing it together. Knowing we all feel the struggle together gives a spirit and patience for challenges rarely felt the rest of the year. Ramadan is for everyone and everyone will be rewarded for their good deeds, by their creator or even just basic karma - hobba in local Arabic. Dubai's souks

Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 12 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

How to stay fit during ramadan

Samer Farag is a Club General Manager and Personal Trainer at Fitness First. As someone who has fasted for years, he has found the perfect balance between fasting and exercise on both a personal and a professional level. Exercise has become fundamental to many people’s daily lives, and for some, their day is built around it. With the upheaval Ramadan can have on daily routines, it is important for those who are fasting to maintain structure. Here are some tips from Samer Farag on how to adapt workouts and how Ramadan can in fact get some people the abs they have always wanted. “My workout is completely different in 40 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

Ramadan,” says Samer. Instead of pausing all exercise, he understands the reality and importance of training throughout this period. “I change my routine by staying away from cardio and high intensity workouts. Instead, I drop my weights to 30 percent of what they normally are.” Rather than avoiding exercise, as a lot of people tend to do during Ramadan, Samer uses the month as a time to ‘shred’. “Due to the lower calorie intake, it is a great time to burn more fat and be in great, cutting shape. I use it to get six-pack ready for the beach. I advise my clients to drop to 2-3 reps when lifting as not only will they stay in shape but they will lose fat as well.” In order to achieve this, good nutrition #discover_dxb

beauty & wellbeing and sleep are key, says Samer. “If you leave your workout to 2-3 hours after eating your body can handle weights as it is full of energy, but you need to have the right amount of carbs, minerals and protein for a quick recovery period. “Leave yourself plenty of hours to sleep before Suhoor as this allows your muscles time to recover and to retain the vitamins and supplements that are so important to your training at this time,” he advises eating something light for the stomach and drinking plenty of water. It seems that timing is just as important for exercise over Ramadan as it is for eating. Samer says: “Our bodies are all programmed to work differently so find out what time of day works best for your body by listening to it. I have to change my timings, as I don’t always have full energy during fasting. I can work out after Iftar or before Suhoor when I have had a small meal. Fitness First clubs open later during the holy month of Ramadan, up to 1am in some clubs, so there’s really no room for excuses for our members.” Samer advises that the first 3-4 sessions will be difficult so take it easy. However, the body quickly adapts and energy levels do increase so don’t give up. Samer has worked at Fitness First for 11-years and has seen the gyms popularity significantly increase during Ramadan over the years, he says: “My first Ramadan at the club was empty, however, year-by-year www.discover-dubai.ae

the mentality of people has changed as they understand the importance of exercise and actually enjoy it.” Last year, Samer spent Ramadan in Abu Dhabi and says the club was full every night after 9pm. He has noticed a real sense of community develop over the years at Fitness First and group exercise classes have become particularly popular, “Group exercise is really successful over Ramadan because you can generally work at your own level and the group motivate each other to come. Other markets

Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. If you're looking to add some clothes to your wardrobe without emptying your pockets, make your way to Ukay Ukay where you'll find second-hand t-shirts, dresses and baby clothes for under Dhs 20. 46 | MAY DISCOVER DUBAI

What to buy

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. If you'd like to try something different, opt for the ones that are filled with caramelised nuts, candied ginger and orange peel. Note: packaged dates can be eaten year-round. www.discover-dubai.ae

Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. The long-lasting fragrance is also used around homes to eliminate stubborn odours from cooking or tobacco. DISCOVER DUBAI MAY | 47

Getting around Dubai

Public transport in Dubai is made up of taxis, buses, trams, the metro and marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries). Here's everything you need to know about these modes of transportation that will help you move from place to place. Taxis: Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.

Booking a taxi Dubai Taxi Corporation (red roof), ladies and families (pink roof), special needs or Hala Taxi (black roof) 04-2080808. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (bookings to be made in advance).

Open to non-Muslims, the mosque features 82 domes held up with over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The site also features food and beverage outlets. Open from 8am to 5pm. Call 02-5995438. 2.
