welcome to dubai

Welcome to our city

Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE

Just 47 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Founding father of the UAE

A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.

www.discover-dubai.ae

Government

The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.9 million people. Around 88% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

City basics Local time The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving. Currency The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One Ruble = Dhs 0.056 One GBP = Dhs 4.84 One Yuan = Dhs 0.54 One Euro = Dhs 4.13 One Rupee = Dhs 0.053 Language The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. Here are some Arabic phrases to help you: Hello - marhaba Welcome - ahlan wa sahlan Goodbye - maa-salaama God willing - in shaa'Allah Yes - naam No - laa Let's go - yalla 6 | APRIL DISCOVER DUBAI

Please - min fadlak Thank you - shukran How much? - bikam? Price - si'r Where is...? - ayna...? Right - yamiin Left - yasaar

Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Public display of affection The UAE is an Islamic country, and these acts are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.

Alcohol Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

Ladies first Most public services have a women's-only queue or section, so you may use them where applicable. www.discover-dubai.ae

The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.

Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered. DISCOVER DUBAI APRIL | 7

Why is Coffee

important in UAE?

By: Salamah Ghudayer The Emirati Coffee tradition; called Qahawa is a tradition from bean to refreshment served sip by sip in little handless cups. Our beans are only slightly roasted, over a fire, cardamom and saffron are added and the noise of the mortar and pestle announces to all, fresh coffee and conversation is being welcomed. Served not by the host or hostess but a standing server to not interrupt the majlis conversation; communication is done by a movement of the cup; a twist - you are done, a lift - you want more. When the coffee is prepared in the traditional way, not the quicker method some houses must use now to just ‘get it done,’ the taste is different; everything is different. It’s almost indescribable, but an experience 8 | APRIL DISCOVER DUBAI

that must be witnessed. So integral, the United Nations has protected it for UAE as an intangible asset. Imagine, you are a guest, coming toward a home you will visit. First the slight scent of a fire passes across your face. “They have roasted the beans and are boiling the water over the fire,” you think to yourself. Ding-dingling-ding-dingaling; your ears catch the sharp then light sounds of the mortar and pestle from the brass accessories which keep the heat of the hot beans. Once you reach within sight of the home, you can smell the cardamom and something else, but you know it is saffron, as they are mingled with the hot beans being crushed and the rich spicy perfume of the mixture arises to your senses as you walk forward. Into the boiling water you see the mixture goes; bubbles boil up to the top once, then twice, then it’s strained into a della that can be held easier #discover_dxb

welcome to dubai than the one now sitting over the fire and all just in time as you greet your hostess nose to burqa, and sit down on a cushion. Off to the side you notice another neighbour lady is headed over. She heard and smelled the welcome and has come to share her news and listen to ours. The majlis has begun. At the risk of sounding similar to the father in ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding,’ coffee is Arab. There are too kinds of coffee beans; the more bitter Robusta and deeper Arabica. Robusta was initially grown in Africa and Arabica in the mountainous regions of Yemen; but Arabica came first; one hundred years at least prior to Robusta. This original coffee region though is only spilt by the narrow Red Sea, yet conditions on both sides; soil and weather produce quite different tastes. How then, does the world think coffee is the product of Latin America? In the 1800’s there was a migration of Arabs to South America and it is the same time, Brazil got its first coffee plantation. Historian’s will say it was French people who brought the plants; but the time period and history speaks for itself; that and there are more people of Lebanese descent in Brazil than in Lebanon. Columbia though is the famous land of coffee you say? Though Columbia too has a giant population of Arabs, the earliest reported coffee plant there was just a decade earlier than Brazil, brought by www.discover-dubai.ae

religious priests of the Jesuit order which was founded in Spain; where who ruled until the “rise of the west” in the 16th century when the order was founded; the Arab Caliphs for over seven hundred years. Coming back to the Emirates and our coastal nation; coffee was sometimes the only thing to serve a guest. Water we could get and some coffee beans can be stretched a long way for the lightcolored refreshment which can satisfy the stomach with its warmth. The huge buffets of today were unseen in the childhood of the middle-aged Emirati. Their parents as well know of even harsher economic times; including even the household of the late Sheikh Zayed, when famously their dwindling stores of food was shared with the community without hesitation. So, coffee turned into something beyond what it seems. Its preparation was an invitation sent by scent and sound. Hospitality was being served and the most valued commodity of all; meaningful human connection. With thanks to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Dubai's souks

Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 16 | APRIL DISCOVER DUBAI

What to do The Majlis Gallery Al Fahidi Neighbourhood, A 'majlis' is defined as a common place or a meeting ground. The Majlis Gallery, as the name suggests, is a meeting place for artists and art lovers alike who love to come together and celebrate art in various forms. However, over the years the gallery has become a lot more than just a meeting place for creative minds. Located in the Al Fahidi Neighbourhood, The Majlis Gallery first opened its doors to art lovers 29 years ago in 1989. Back in those days when Dubai was just a trading hub, Dubai’s own little home grown art gallery started to feed the culturally bereft community. As Dubai’s skyline started to evolve over the years, the gallery also grew to become one of Dubai’s premiere art galleries taking pride in promoting artworks of local artists as well as those of international standing. Hosting numerous solo and group www.discover-dubai.ae

exhibitions, the gallery has been responsible for introducing many of the regions finest artists to the cultural stage. History A haven for artists and art lovers, The Majlis Gallery grew out of a love affair between an expatriate lady and a very special house. Alison Collins came to Dubai in 1976 to work as an interior designer. She fell in love with the country, especially with the architecture and the ambiance of the old wind tower houses in the Bastakia. In 1978, with the help of two Iranian tea importers and an Egyptian curtain maker, Alison and her husband secured the lease on villa number 19, Bastakiya, Bur Dubai. Here, over the next ten years, they raised their three young children and played host to many informal soirees in their ‘majlis’, hence the name, introducing artists both professional and amateur to Dubai’s growing expat community. Other markets

Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. If you're looking to add some clothes to your wardrobe without emptying your pockets, make your way to Ukay Ukay where you'll find second-hand t-shirts, dresses and baby clothes for under Dhs 20. 50 | APRIL DISCOVER DUBAI

What to buy

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. If you'd like to try something different, opt for the ones that are filled with caramelised nuts, candied ginger and orange peel. Note: packaged dates can be eaten year-round. www.discover-dubai.ae

Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. The long-lasting fragrance is also used around homes to eliminate stubborn odours from cooking or tobacco. DISCOVER DUBAI APRIL | 51
