EDITOR’S NOTE In the famous words of Soul II Soul, “back to life, back to reality.” Unfortunately the summer holidays have come to an end and it’s time to get back into the swing of things. But when one door closes, a window opens and we’re looking forward to the cooler months, for now, please keep your windows closed, it’s still far too hot. Just like the roads again, this month will be busy, busy, busy! If your summer meet-ups didn’t go exactly to plan, we’ve rounded up Dubai’s best brunches so you and your gal pals can finally get-together and exchange the holiday photos that didn’t quite make it on your Facebook feed. Summer bods are out and it’s time to start padding up for the winter. Any excuse really. Did you know that 90% of women have cellulite? And, it has nothing to do with your weight? So, what have you been worrying about? We’ve spoken to the experts to debunk some of our crazy ideas about cellulite. And if you’ve slightly overspent over the past few months, don’t worry. This issue, we’ve done the leg work to find out all the nitty gritty about credit cards. We’ve dived deep into our local bank’s cards to find out what makes each one unique as well as their benefits. To all our holiday-makers - welcome back! And, to everyone else, happy September!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Send your letters to editorial@connector-dubai.com, we'd love to hear from you! We moved to Dubai a few months back and have been researching local schools even before we moved here. The feature on Back To School helped us gain more knowledge about the various perspectives and also, we found out that schools have procedures in place if our child is not comfortable in their school. Andreas, Jumeirah Islands

I recently got my driving licence, and couldn't decide on whether I should buy a car or rent a car. Your articel explain benefts of both options literally put all the points in front me. Now I understand and I able to map out my requirements, match them with the offerings of both options and make an informed decision. Adele, Palm Jumeirah

The write-up on acne and its treatments was very informative. It gave me a deep insight into understanding the science behind acne. The home remedies were very useful, and I have made note of all the products recommended in the feature by the beauty experts. Nidhi, Bur Dubai

I loved the travel essential accessories featured in Connector with all my heart. The selection was fresh, wide and pretty. It actually gave me some pretty good ideas on what to pack for Eid Al Adha break. The ‘vacation’ slip-ons was one of my favourite products. Maryam, Business Bay 8 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

Kiwi is an exotic fruit that originated in China, with a fuzzy outer skin and juicy flesh. Rich in trace elements, minerals and vitamins, the kiwi quickly conquered the global market with its unique, exceptional sweet and sour taste!

Why introduce kiwi into our daily diet?

How to enjoy kiwis

It is rich in vitamin C. Consumption of a single kiwifruit can cover the human organism’s daily requirement in this vitamin. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, E and B complex, and it contains potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

There are several different ways to incorporate kiwis into your daily diet: • Serve your friends a refreshing fruit drink made with kiwi and melon. • Make delicious and healthy kiwi-based smoothies. • Enrich your breakfast by adding freshly cut slices of kiwi to yoghurt or to your cereal. • Enjoy chocolate kiwis! Cut the kiwis in slices and dip them in melted chocolate. The taste is a revelation! • Simply add kiwi to your favourite green salad.

European kiwis conquer the global market! European kiwi stands out for its quality, both in taste and in nutritional value, because it is harvested by hand. Kiwis are placed in suitable refrigerated storage areas within 24 hours from harvesting, thus guaranteeing that all of the fruit’s nutrients are preserved. European kiwis stand out and are sought after in many international markets, and are exported to over 51 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

So let your imagination run free and pleasantly surprise your friends and family, by using kiwi in various recipes. The results will amaze you!

THE REVIEW

Kim’s Singapore Seafood at Al Seef

W ith so many options to eat out in Dubai and so many different cuisines on offer, it is difficult to imagine something new and different to come along and try to make an impact on this very diverse and complete dining scene. And just when you think we have got it all, up pops a little unexpected surprise. Kim’s Singapore Seafood is the Dubai restaurant spun off from the well-known and long established Kim’s Place in the heart of Singapore. Established for some 60 years the different dishes and tastes developed over time are now available in the recently opened restaurant. Set in the heart of the Al Seef promenade, the restaurant has seating for over 160 people across a large dining area, a relaxed bar area, and a wide terrace with stunning views overlooking the Creek and across over to Deira. The menu includes a good selection of appetisers and soups to start with, extensive fish and shellfish choices, beef and chicken dishes and some good vegetarian options. We started with a bowl of golden pumpkin soup with prawn and crabmeat and a portion www.connector.ae

of fried clams with sambal. Even though it was a hot summer evening, the soup was a welcome start, nice and thick and with a perfect amount of shredded crabmeat and prawns. The clams were a good sized portion, wok fried and in a sambal sauce that had a very nice kick to it. Our main of black pepper crab in hot pot was a stand out dish. Presented as a whole crab, already cut into portions in a thick black pepper sauce. Accompanying the dish were some small mantou, served piping hot, which were very tasty by themselves, but totally irresistible when dipping in the black pepper sauce. To finish we shared a creatively presented and very refreshing lemongrass jelly with lemon sorbet. Kim’s Singapore Seafood is sure to be a hit with residents and tourists alike. A great location for sundowners after a day spent on the Creek, or an evening out for that special occasion, this is surely one of the go to places at Al Seef. Expect to pay around Dhs 180 per person for a 3 course meal not including drinks. For reservations call 04-3708288. CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 31

KIDS & EDUCATION

Settling back

into school life The month has come when parents, children and schools are all anxious as the new academic year begins. Whether a child is moving up a class or is new to the school, the nervous feelings are almost the same.

C hildren generally follow their parents’ emotions, and if it’s anxiety that’s dominating you as a parent, your children may not feel very comfortable going back to school. Hence, it is advisable for parents to keep calm and trust the schools. Schools prepare to welcome back students in advance. They make sure that students settle back into the classroom easily and effortlessly after a long summer break. In our feature we have got all the queries on how schools welcome children back answered, including some expert advice from educational professionals on how parents can prepare themselves and their children for going back to school. www.connector.ae

First day of term and how schools welcome back students From having hands on staff to answer all queries from students and parents, to having interactive sessions to introduce new courses, the school staff prepare themselves to settle the students back into the classrooms. Hands on staff to answer all questions Samantha Kleinschmidt, Parent Relations Executive, Kings’ School Al Barsha said, “The first day of the new school year is always buzzing with excitement. Our leadership team is at the school gates to greet both new and existing parents, and direct them CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 41

KIDS & EDUCATION where they need to be. Myself, and the rest of the support team at the different school reception areas, are also on hand to help with any questions that new parents may have, and to welcome new children to the school and their classrooms.” Introduce students to the new courses Fiona McKenzie, Director, Gabbitas Education Middle East said, “Teachers are well used to helping children cope with the first few days of term and will have spooned their lessons accordingly. Time will be spent introducing existing pupils to their new courses and helping new children get orientated to their new environment.” Interactive games & activities Jodie Eardley, Assistant Head of Early Years at Uptown School said, “Our Orientation Day helps students ease into school life. Many games and activities are planned by the teachers to help the students get to know their new class and surroundings.” Principal Andrew Prosser at Dubai Heights Academy said, “For all of our current students we run a series of transition days so they can meet the new teacher and spend some time in their new classroom. This helps settle the nerves on the first day back. We send all of our current students on their summer holidays with a pack to help them prepare for the new school year. The statistics on learning 42 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

loss over the summer holidays are alarming with up to 2.6 months of maths skills lost and 2 months of reading skills. It only takes 2-3 hours of work per week to help prevent this learning loss and make sure that the students are in the learning zone when they return to school.” Special preparations for FS1 students Since kids do not like surprises, schools plan play-dates before they start formal education to make them feel familiar with their new surroundings in advance. In-school play dates before the school year Samantha Kleinschmidt of Kings’ School Al Barsha said, “Before the school year starts, we arrange in-school play dates for our new FS1 students. This gives the children a chance to see their classroom and meet their classmates.” Jodie Eardley of Early Years at Uptown School said, “Before the summer break, Early Years families are invited to our 'Come and Play' mornings where new students are able to explore and interact with their new school environment. Families are able to meet and get to know each other, creating a sense of community and belonging even before the first day of school. During the first few weeks of school, teachers work closely with parents as partners to transition the students into school life comfortably and confidently.” #connectordubai

KIDS & EDUCATION Parent partnership programme Jaya Ramesh, Academic Supervisor Primary Section, Global Indian International School, Dubai said, “Parent Partnership Programmes are conducted once a month to make children feel supported by school staff and parents both.” Parent contact time in the first few weeks Fiona McKenzie of Gabbitas Education Middle East said, “For FS1 students this can be a particularly stressful time of year, although they may be excited about starting their new adventure when they realise it is every day it can seem a bit daunting. There will be lots of playing and getting to know the other children to start with and familiarising them with both the classroom and the wider environment.” Creating homely yet stimulating environment, Marco Longmore, Head Master at Brighton College Dubai said, “A lot of time is invested into the settling in period and parents are involved as much as possible, enabling the Early Years teachers to gather important information about the pupils in their care. Our Early Years environment is homely yet stimulating and pupils are encouraged to have the autonomy to flourish.” Special programmes for mid-term students Since, students who move up higher www.connector.ae

grades are excited to meet their friends, there are a few students who move to Dubai from a foreign country or from a different school. Schools arrange a buddy support system and keep a close watch to help them gradually settle in. Buddy Support System Samantha Kleinschmidt of Kings’ School Al Barsha said, “New students that start midterm are assigned a buddy in their class. Their buddy is responsible for taking them around the school and making sure they are looked after; and this helps put them at ease and make the transition less daunting. In the first few weeks there will also be a meeting between the class teacher and parents, which is a general conversation about how their child is settling in.” Keep a close watch over students Jodie Eardley of Early Years at Uptown School said, “Students are welcomed into their new class and given a buddy to help them orientate and make friends. The family are given a welcome pack containing the parent handbook and school information. Teachers communicate closely with parents to ensure the students are happy and settled.” New social & academic initiatives Every year schools strive to become better than last year and introduce a number of social and academic activities to nurture the CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 43

KIDS & EDUCATION educational environment. Principal Andrew Prosser at Dubai Heights Academy said, “For the new term we will be exploring the world of Virtual Reality with our new VR Kits. This will enable the children to explore new places that will really help bring our topics alive. We will also be developing our food production skills.” Jodie Eardley of Early Years at Uptown School said, “ The Early Years will see it's very own EY STEM Lab opening this term giving students access to advanced Lego Education, iPad coding, and open ended problem solving resources. Students will also be excited to see their new colourful, interactive playground flooring.” Programme for parents Parents-Teachers sessions Janecke Aarnaes, Head of Dwight School Dubai said, “Within the first few weeks of school we arrange various sessions for parents to meet the teachers, to learn more about the curriculum, to learn more about the IB programs and to learn more about the role of the Parents Association and volunteer for participation.” Familarise children with their school bags Sasha Crabb, Principal of Victory Heights Primary School said, “We send letters to parents educating them on how to start preparing kids for their school life. Parents are advised to take advantage of the meet and greet sessions that the school provides 44 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

them to understand a day in the life of an FS1 child. We ask parents to invest in a relationship of trust with school. Over the summer prepare your child by getting them familiar with their school bag, lunch box and Tupperware. Getting them to be responsible for their water bottle and cap will make them independent and happier. Let them carry their own bag into school and walk themselves.” Get children to bed early Fiona McKenzie, Director, Gabbitas Education Middle East said, “At Gabbitas Education we always advise parents to try and get their children back into some sort of routine before term starts with earlier bedtimes and getting used to rising early again. This can help children survive the first few days. Often children are excited about going back to school and seeing their friends but a new pencil case or a fun new lunch box can add to the sense of excitement at starting a new school year.” Do not panic and don’t overdo it Mini Menon, author and teacher said, “While parents prepare children for the schools, it is very important that they do not overdo it. They should place their trust in teachers. The kids will fall in routine automatically in a week’s time. The routine will stabilise as they start going to school as parents don’t need to stress out much!” #connectordubai

BIRTHDAYS

Children can say

the funniest things We love the children in our lives, they bring us joy and happiness and everything they do, most of the time, makes us smile. Here at Connector we share some of your funny moments with your children and here is a round up of just some of the things you have told us your kids, who are all celebrating birthdays in this month, have said to make you laugh. Happy birthday to them all!

Vanshika Palija 7 years old on 20 September Nord Anglia International School Funny moment: A couple of months back, Vanshika met one of our old aunts who is over 90 years old. Vanshika was shocked to know her age and asked very loudly, "Why is she still alive?"

Caleb Miguel E. Casing 3 years old on 10 September Funny moment: I was showing him a blue balloon and ask him if it is the colour orange and he tapped his forehead exclaiming “Oh my goodness!”

Hetansh Hemant Jain 1 years old on 16 September Funny moment: Hetansh's first words are Papa and he keeps saying that. It becomes funny when we are on public transport or in a queue somewhere and he starts off "Papa Papa" to random guys.

Advita Prabhu 12 years old on 1 September Cambridge International School Funny moment: She once said "My tummy does growl sometimes. It’s a soft sound like a cloud getting mad."

Jameela Ahmed Awny 6 years old on 13 September Dubai International Academy Funny moment: She called me on my mobile at work to tell me she had a fight with Siri and Siri keeps calling her Dalia and telling her I don't understand what you are saying.

Have your children said something that has set you off in belly fulls of laughter and made your friends chuckle? If they have and they are celebrating a birthday in October, email editorial@connector-dubai.com a picture and a few words on what it is they said that made you laugh, and we will publish the top ones next month. Include their age, date of birth and the school they go to. Congratulations to Vanshika Palija, who has won a voucher to the value of Dhs 500 for Tumble Time.

Books for children C hildhood thoughts sometimes become the foundation of your entire life. Allow your children to develop their confidence and believe they are capable of a lot of things. This month’s reads include a book which will teach the little ones that there is nothing one cannot achieve, as well as a book for parents to introduce early vocabulary words to their growing toddlers. You Are Awesome: Find Your Confidence And Dare To Be Brilliant At (Almost) Anything by Matthew Syed Age group: 4-9 We all need to learn that success is earned rather than given and talent can be acquired with hard work, determination and practice. Young children often make assumptions in life about certain things they think they are not good at. You Are Awesome uses examples of successful people from Mozart to Serena Williams to demonstrate how fighting against odds and putting lots of hard work and practice into their work made them so successful. There's no reason why anyone can't achieve anything. Price: Dhs 63 www.magrudy.com Maths Games for Clever Kids by Gareth Moore Age group: 9-12 Maths can be fun too! Don’t you agree? HEALTH & WELLBEING

Exercise effectively

and how to stay healthy

A lot of times people work out with the aim of losing weight. While losing weight is the point, weight should be lost the healthy way. A lot of times people tend to combine various ideas and opinions, from what they know, what they hear and what they read online and follow a combination of practices that may not always be right and get themselves injured. Injuries do not only halt their fitness plan but can also bring some irreversible pains. Connector spoke with field experts to get a few tips on things to keep in mind while working out and what to do if you get yourself injured. Yasmin Karachiwala, the franchise owner of The PAD suggests the following things while working out Stay hydrated “Ensure you're getting lots of water intake before, during and after your workout www.connector.ae

to flush out the toxins your body will be throwing out while you work out.” Strength training “Everyone has some kind of exercise they love to do - yoga, pilates, cross fit, etc. Make sure to add strength training to your workout week, as this will protect you from losing bone density as you get older, which will eventually lead to osteoporosis, osteoarthritis.” Incorporate exercise into your daily life. “You don't need to find one hour every time you want to exercise. You can do 5 minutes, 10 times a day and it'll be good enough. If you work on the 20th floor, get off on 15 and walk up 5 floors, make sure you get up and take a small stroll every hour instead of staying seated for hours at a stretch, do a few chair exercises on the spot.” CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 51

HEALTH & WELLBEING Don’t train everyday “Your body needs a break at least one day of the week. It doesn't mean you can't do anything on that day, but take a walk or a run instead of hitting the gym for your rest day.” Warm up and cool down “The worst thing you can do for your body is start a high intensity exercise without warming up, and leave a high intensity workout without stretching. Ensure you take care of your body so that it can take care of you.” Put your phone away “Let your workout time be free from any distractions like social media, emails, phone calls.” Bring variation in workout “Don't keep doing the same exercises on repeat for weeks, your body will get used to it and you won't see a difference. For example, if you do pilates, don't keep doing the same exercises on the reformer. Ensure you're making use of the other equipment to challenge yourself and keep the workouts interesting.” Don't copy online videos It can be tempting to try a cool looking exercise a fitness trainer you follow on social 52 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

media did. But you don't want to try this without the guidance of a professional. Breathe Never hold your breath while working out. Inhale and exhale as deeply as possible, as this will improve the quality of your exercise. Remain goal orientated Galen Carroll, Senior Physiotherapist, Mediclinic Dubai Mall said, “You should always set goals whenever you are working out - this will focus your training, reduce procrastination and enhance your training effect.” Warm down and Stretch/Foam Roll Galen Carroll added, “ Flexibility is vitally important when you train regularly. Maintaining joint and soft tissue mobility will enhance performance and reduce injury risk. I recommend incorporating yoga into your weekly training schedule as an easy way to dedicate training time towards flexibility.” Listen to your body Dr. Preethamraj Vittal Salian, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon at Aster Clinic, Dubai Silicon Oasis said, “Listen to your body and the signs it may depict. Rigorous work out #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING may harm the body if your body is not used to it. If you feel lethargic or weak, ensure to stop.” Consult professionals Dr. Preethamraj Vittal Salian added, “Wear the right kind of clothing and shoes as required for a wok out. If you are a beginner it is best to get consulted from a specialist to understand your body type and weight and then focus on a customised work out regime that suits your body.” Balanced Diet Dr. Preethamraj Vittal Salian said, “Consume a balanced and healthy diet at all times. If you are hungry before a work out, eat a small pre-work out snack to give you the energy. However do not eat immediately after exercising and do not wait for too long either.” Aftermaths of working out incorrectly You are prone to injuries, sometimes irreversible Yasmin Karachiwala of The PAD said, “You are prone to all kids of injuries such as back pain, neck pain, uncomfortable shoulder pain, pulled muscles, torn joints, are all signs that you've done something wrong during your workout. Remember, you should rather lift lighter weights and do it with correct form, than try a heavier weight and injure www.connector.ae

yourself. Some injuries can be irreversible and can cause a negative impact for life. So it's essential that all movement is monitored, or you ensure you've done your research to get it right by yourself.” You can hurt your training partner Patrick Milton, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist said, “ If exercises are done incorrectly the training partner can also get injured. Incorrect exercises also prevent the athlete to achieve the desired outcome.” Acute overload Galen Carroll of Mediclinic said, “Acute overload is another common contributing factor in injury risk. This is when the athlete increases their volume of training too rapidly which results in the structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments) not being able to tolerate the load being put on them. I like to incorporate the 10% rule when increasing the volume/load of training - simply this means that you should increase your training load/volume by approximately 10% per week (1 week equates to 3 training sessions). This will reduce injury risk and allow for more consistent training gains.” What to do if you get injured? Give your body the rest it needs Dr. Preethamraj Vittal Salian, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon at Aster Clinic, “In case CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 53

HEALTH & WELLBEING of an injury caused during or post a work out, the first and the most important thing to do is to get right and appropriate diagnosis. In most cases, minor injuries like a twisted ankle or a sprain will heal in a couple of weeks. If it doesn’t, do not delay seeking medical help. Medications should be taken only as referred to by a healthcare professional. One must get back to working out only after complete recovery. Give your body the rest it requires.” Consult a physiotherapist Faisal Hayat Khan, Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapistat Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery said, “If one has any injury please consult a physiotherapist or physician as soon as possible.” Tips for people with sensitive joints Don’t cardio on a hard surface Yasmin Karachiwala of The PAD said, “People with sensitive backs and joints should stick to exercise forms like Pilates, which are amazing to strengthen these parts without any risk of injury. For cardio, ensure you're not doing your cardio on a hard surface floor, as this is not good for your knees.” Galen Carroll of Mediclinic said, “ With regard lower back pain, it is widely accepted that cardiovascular exercise (anything from 54 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

walking, to swimming, to cycling) is a safe and effective exercise to help alleviate symptoms. Pilates, an exercise regime focusing predominantly on spinal control and stability, is also strongly advisable. Yoga is also an effective treatment option when stiffness and reduced mobility of the spine is present.” “For joint related pain, it is important that you see a physiotherapist in order to accurately assess the injury and tailor an exercise program that will address any muscular imbalances you may have.” “For all back and joint pain, a progressive exercise plan is advisable. The first 3-4 sessions should be exploratory in order to allow you to identify areas of strength and areas of weakness. This will minimise any risk of flaring up your symptoms and better equip you in understanding how to challenge yourself in a progressive fashion.” Patrick Milton of Dubai Capital Health said, “. There are no hard and fast rules as each and every person has different levels of tolerance but a few general rules can apply to all. Exercise to your level of fitness/ body type/disability, gentle and planned progression, avoid high impact activities at the beginning, focus on both your level of mobility/flexibility and strength/power and vary your exercise routine regularly. #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Cellulite explained

and how to manage it

T he word ‘cellulite’ is something of a taboo in our society. We don’t like talking about it and a lot of us are ashamed to say we have it. But, with cellulite affecting between 80%-90% of women over 30, why is such a common cosmetic condition so undiscussed? Cellulite manifests as dimple-like bumps on your skin that is sometimes described as an ‘orange-peel’ texture. Although the condition can affect both men and women, it is more common in females due to the structure of the skin. There are many misconceptions about cellulite, including the fact that it has nothing to do with your weight. Hormones, genetics, diet and a lack of exercise can contribute to the condition and it can affect pretty much everyone. So, don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed! From how to avoid it to how to treat it, we’ve spoken to the experts to get everything you’ve asked, answered. To start, what actually is cellulite? In order to figure out what cellulite does, www.connector.ae

we need to know what it is. Kanta Jethwani, CEO of Bloom Aesthetic and Laser Clinic said, “Cellulite is enlarged fat cells or body fat layer that sits under the skin, causing bumpy appearance on the overlying skin. Under your skin, there’s a network of connective-tissue strands, called septae, that hold the fat in place. If the septae aren’t strong and tightly woven together (which may be determined by genetics), the fat can bulge out between them, creating ripples on the skin’s surfacecellulite, hence the ‘cottage cheese’ or ‘orangepeel’ appearance. This type of fat is trapped in between areas where there is a high amount of fat to muscle, like buttocks, hips and thighs. But can in fact form anywhere where excess fatty tissue accumulates.” Who is most likely to get cellulite? Some of us are more prone to getting cellulite. With our age, gender and lifestyle in consideration, we’ve got an idea of what CONNECTOR SEPTEMBER 55

HEALTH & WELLBEING makes us more susceptible. Dr. Umesh Nihalani, Specialist Dermatologist at Dubai London Clinic said, “Cellulite occurs mainly in females in post-adolescent age and is mostly distributed on their buttocks, thighs and abdomen. There are morphological differences of the fat lobes between males and females, which explains the large frequency of cellulite in females. Many people confuse cellulite with obesity. However, this is incorrect, in obesity only fat cells are increased in size, whereas in cellulite there are several structural alterations in dermis. Cellulite is thought to be formed from the breakdown of collagen in the reticular dermis, which leads to weakness in the dermis and herniation of subcutaneous fat into the dermis. Congestion of fluid and protein in the dermis is believed to lead to formation of fibrotic bands between the subcutaneous tissue and dermis resulting in retraction, dimpling or nodularity. There are multiple theories claimed for its pathophysiology. Risk factors for developing cellulite include, family history, being overweight/obese, elderly and having excess hormones and/or poor lymphatic drainage. There are three stages of cellulite (Hexsel Classification). Stage 0, where the skin surface is not altered. Stage 1, when the skin is normal, but some cellulite appears when the skin is pinched. Stage 2, where the skin appears dimpled without pinching or manipulation in standing position. Stage 3, where the skin appears both dimpled as in stage 2 along with raised areas and nodules in some areas.” 56 SEPTEMBER CONNECTOR

What is the most important thing about cellulite that people should know? ‘Cellulite’ is not generally a positive word - it tends to come with some negative connotations about weight and health in general. However, Dr. Sabna Mohamed, Specialist Dermatologist Aster Clinic, Qusais said, “There are quite a few misconceptions surrounding cellulite and awareness is important for people to be able to have the condition treated in the best possible way. One of the most important things people need to understand is that cellulite does not only occur to people who have some extra body weight. It could happen to anybody even somebody who is lean, although it does become more noticeable if you are overweight. Another common misconception people have is that self-medicating with the use of skin tightening and firming creams will help treating cellulite. This is definitely not true because no cream has shown to have permanent effects of cellulite. Consult with a Dermatologist and understand what can be done to manage the condition.” How can you avoid getting cellulite? There are some things that you can do to avoid getting cellulite. Dr. Fady Haddad, Specialist Dermatologist at SHAMMA Clinic said, “Maintaining a healthy diet, dry-brushing skin, steering clear from substances such as alcohol, smoking, etc., leads to less cellulite. Poor circulation, hence weaker oxygen supply, can contribute to cellulite by reducing collagen production. Factors such as smoking, tight #connectordubai

HEALTH & WELLBEING fitting underwear, hormonal influences and lack of physical activities play a major role in this aforementioned damage. However, cellulite can also be a genetically susceptible condition.” Treating cellulite Although there isn’t a ‘fix-all’ treatment, there are some options that you can take to improve the appearance of cellulite. Kanta Jethwani has shared her top treatments, both at home and in the clinic, that can help to treat cellulite. Coffee wrap: It can be used on the skin where its penetration can boost natural collagen and elastin production. This, in turn, reduces cellulite appearance. Acoustic wave therapy: Shock waves with low energy are sent through tissue to reduce retention of fluids and breaking down the solid fat molecules. Radiofrequency treatment: Skin heating using radio waves reportedly improves production of collagen and reduction in cellulite appearance. Laser therapy: Can either be used on the skin or conduct an intrusive procedure underneath the skin. Research on noninvasive approach has not been productive and the invasive one has shown better results that have lasted up to six months.

www.connector.ae

Subcision: An approved method that involves minor surgery to reduce scars and wrinkles appearing on your body through fibrotic strands break down. The results go for up to two years. Mesotherapy: Involves subjection of drugs into the tissue directly that are not meant for cellulite curbing but are used to treat other conditions. You need more than ten sessions for it to produce results. Some natural treatments to try at home are: Brushing dry skin: Dry brushing your skin can help liquefy the solid fat deposits and facilitate an even distribution. So the cellulite may diminish or have a vague appearance. Massages: Applying gentle pressure slowly over the focus area will help the connective tissues and fascia to lengthen. Hydrate: Water is essential to life and it is also essential to reducing and preventing further cellulite. Herbal tea is also great. Healthy diet: High insulin levels increase fat production in your body. As earlier mentioned, cellulite comes from an increase in the size of fat cells and more insulin is produced if the sugar intake is high. One of the effective ways towards body weight maintenance and reducing cellulite occurrence is having a diet with low carbohydrates and rich in healthy fats.

T ree Spa, located on the second floor of the luxury InterContinental Dubai Marina, sets distinct spa standards. Services here clearly resonate with opulence, royalty and subtleness. The impressive service begins with a very warm welcome at the reception. The receptionist sat me down on a comfortable arm chair. The therapist had me fill a consultancy form before we ventured inside the spa facility. Yoga for strong core

A strong torso is your body’s powerhouse with endless benefits. A strong core makes you less prone to injuries, protect the most important inner organs, central nervous system and help prevent back pain. Having a strong core does not mean to have abs, it’s all about having a core where abdominal muscles, lower back and hip flexors work together to improve structure and alignment. Clifford Tindell. Branch Manager of Yoga La Vie said,“Yoga is a great regime to strengthen the core, lengthen muscles, improve posture and burn those infamous calories. The bonus? Improved spinal alignment, posture and a strong core will have you look like you've lost weight even if your still indulging in the occasional donut... You're only human.” Half Boat Pose - Sit on the mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the mat. Try to bend your knees as close to parallel with the floor. Keep pushing your hips back as if you are sitting on a low chair.
