So, if you are looking for mouth-watering yet healthy recipes and motivational advice from someone who has actually ‘been there’ then I can tell you Stephanie is your lady! Hi Louise, I’m really enjoying all the animal stuff in the magazine! I read about the modelling agency for animals in the recent issue. My dog is such a show off and I’m definitely going to get in touch with them to arrange a photo shoot. Cheers, Vicky

Thanks for covering the ARTE craft market this month. I’m new to Dubai and I picked up a copy of Connector at my son’s new school. As a fellow crafter, it was really interesting to read all about other crafters in the city. I may even get involved. Regards, Caroline P.

Dear Connector, Each month I read about Dubai’s cats and dogs that are looking for a home. Even though I’m unable to have any more pets at the moment, I just wanted to thank the Connector team for giving these poor guys space in the magazine. Thanks, from Nimesh 20 | OCTOBER Connector

It was lovely reading your article on the importance of calcium in children’s nutrition. Ever since, I’ve made it a habit of including calcium-rich foods in every meal my children have. From Maggie In a city as trendy as Dubai, juicing is definitely the next big thing. Your article on fruit juices was a lovely piece. While I’ve always gone for orange, I think I’ll be trying different fruit juices now that I know their benefits! Sincerely, Layan

A coffee with…

Jennifer McGarrigale Co-owner of Exquisite Events.

What brought you to Dubai?

I moved to Dubai 13 years ago to begin a career with Emirates Airlines. I always loved and had a passion for travel and had previously lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I was a flight attendant for 6 years and I loved every minute of it. It allowed me the opportunity to see the world for free. It was hard work and tiring at times but such an amazing experience, one I’ve never regretted.

How did you get into this profession?

I always had an interest in events and planning and when I felt ready to leave it was the first thing that I knew I would like to try my hand at. I completed a course in wedding and event planning and I knew it was the right choice straight away. Having the course and diploma behind me gave me the confidence that I needed to pursue this career.

Describe a typical day?

In this career there is no typical day! Every day is different depending on the events that we are working on. As a working mum there are typical things in my day like the school run but the other things in the day always vary.

And the worst?

This job can be very high pressured and there are times when the stress levels can be high, obviously in the build up to an event its fast moving and that can mean a lot of pressure. In truth though I don’t really have a “worst part” or I wouldn’t do it. You have to love this career to stay in it long term.

What was a stand out moment in your career?

I always say it, but I loved doing an event for the Royal family for New Year’s Eve two years ago, it was one of our very first events so it stands out in my mind. I think if you are given the opportunity to work for royalty there are very few other moments that can top that.

What advice would you give to any young person wanting to get into your field? I would advise anyone looking to get into this field to definitely spend some time working with an event planner to see if it’s a career that you would really like as the workload and stress can be high and that’s not for everyone. I also would do an event and wedding planning course so you have an idea of what to expect once you begin.

Your motto

Be thankful for what you have and work hard for what you don’t have.

Be breast aware

BurJuman has announced the start of the 2015 Safe & Sound breast cancer awareness campaign. Now in its 19th year, Safe & Sound is one of the most comprehensive breast cancer campaigns in the Middle East. Featuring in-mall and external initiatives throughout October, the campaign focuses on empowering women and their families in the fight against breast cancer. A key element of this year’s campaign is the introduction of the new Safe & Sound app. The app will replace the traditional Safe & Sound Walkathon and will be available to subscribers both in and outside the UAE, starting from October. Users will be able to run and walk, tracking their progress at the same time. Participants are invited to donate money directly to Al Jalila Foundation and Breast Friends via the app’s built-in payment gateway. As in previous years, uniCare Medical Centre joins the campaign as a medical partner, and will be running a number of activities during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, such as giving away 10,000 coupons for free check-ups, and unlimited discounted mammograms at uniCare clinics during October. For more information visit www.safeandsound.ae or call 04-4093231.

Time to party in pink

The event will kick off with zumba for kids at 6.30pm with the showstopper ladies-only zumba running from 7.15pm to 9.15pm. To register, send a text with your name quoting ‘ZumbaMarathon’ to 4900.

The event will be hosted at Hilton Dubai The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residences, where 120 runners will take to the stairs. The course may seem steep at 36 floors and 730 stairs but we assure you, the view from the top is well worth it. For information and registration visit www.premieronline.com. 26 | OCTOBER Connector

Automotive Repair Systems (ARS) How many of you have scratches and dents in your car from the day to day rigours of driving in Dubai? I know I have, but then I found ARS S.M.A.R.T Repair, a cost effective solution to removing smaller marks without having to go to the Police or insurance company. Using S.M.A.R.T Repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technique) for all paint, dent, interior, windscreen and wheel repairs, ARS bridges the gap between a touch-up pen and the dealer’s body shop. By focusing on the small areas of damage, ARS can provide a significantly cheaper and faster solution to your cars cosmetic needs, with a typical repair (A4 size) costing around Dhs 500. My 9 year old Pajero had scuff marks on both bumpers, the doors were chipped and scratched, and I even had battery acid on one of the wings, but after leaving it with ARS for a day, it now looks like I just drove it out of the showroom! ARS S.M.A.R.T Repair is perfect if you are looking to clean up your car, whether for personal pride or in preparation to sell it, and it is also a great idea to touch up that hire car before you hand it back. ARS have centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with Mobile S.M.A.R.T Repair vans. Email info@automotiverepairsystems.ae or call 04-3807906. ARS are giving Connector readers a 25% discount for the month of October only. The discount valid for one repair session per car only and you must quote ‘Connector’ at the time of booking. 28 | OCTOBER Connector

This month, we would like to draw your attention to the humanitarian work that Sarah Brook does with orphans in Malawi as the founder and director of the Sparkle Malawi Orphan Centre. Tell us a bit about yourself. I am a 25 year old British expat who has lived in the UAE for the last two years, pursuing a career in public relations. I have represented England for the Rugby 7’s and national level hockey. I am also a qualified wakeboard and water ski instructor with a degree in psychology and a masters in journalism. Tell us how Sparkle Malawi started? When my grandfather died when I was 18, he had left me some money, so when I left school I decided to travel the world. The first stop was Malawi with a school friend of mine. Whilst over there, I ate the local food and drank the water and became seriously unwell. Suffering with a bowel complication, I was rushed to the local hospital unconscious. There was only one 32 | OCTOBER Connector

doctor on duty. With a queue of around 300 Malawians and a high rate of HIV patients, the doctor needed to operate on me but said that there was a high risk of me getting HIV. The only other option was to find a villager who could drive me to a hospital a few hours away but that would put me at risk of dying on route, which was a risk he was prepared to take and one that ultimately saved my life. When he came to visit me, he explained that the Malawian people queuing to see the doctor had pushed me to the front, as they wanted me to be seen. From this moment on I knew I owed the country my life, so I made it my mission to help them. Soon after, I returned to the University of Exeter. With the help of friends and family and lots of sponsorship and fundraising, I raised about GBP 35,000. I travelled to Malawi in 2012 and set up the Sparkle Malawi Orphan Centre. I then moved to Dubai so that I could make the most of the tax-free salary and fund the project. To ensure the sustainability of the project, I employed eight members of local staff www.connector.ae

and put strategies in place. This past June, I decided that I wanted to be in Malawi full time to oversee things. Having 150 children between the ages of zero and six who call me mother at the age of 25 isn’t something I had ever imagined, but life is full of twists and turns and I wouldn’t have it any other way. How does Sparkle Malawi aim to help children? With one in 14 children dying before the age of five in Malawi, Sparkle aims to ensure all of our children make it to primary school as healthy and loved individuals. We provide children with two meals a day, early infant education, unlimited clean water supply, two vaccinations a year and 24-hour love and support. We give them the best head start possible, in the most crucial years of their life. With more funding, we hope to be able to expand so that we can accommodate all of our children up to the age of 18.

UK and getting my vaccinations and other things sorted before heading out there. In Malawi, I will be installing solar panels, building a volunteer house, sorting out transport and improving the kitchen and water facilities. It is going to be non-stop! The team in the UAE will also be working hard to keep me out there, building partnerships with companies, individuals and schools and reaching out to people for support. How can people get involved? Everyone has something they can offer Sparkle. Your phonebook and contacts is the most valuable tool to us. Whether it is advice, experience, giving two hours a month of admin time, providing us with free printing, auditing, funding... you name it, it can help us. Charity isn’t just about the money and what makes Sparkle sparkle! It is also about the people involved who have a genuine passion. Visit www.sparklemalawi.org.

What’s the next step for you and Sparkle Malawi? In two weeks’ time, I will be in Malawi full time. I am speaking in several schools around the www.connector.ae

DINING out

d

Teste & d Trie La Parrilla @ Jumeirah Beach Hotel La Parrilla, the authentic South American restaurant at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, has launched a family-style brunch with a Latin flair. With a weekly rotating menu, you can enjoy a culinary tour of Latin America and award-winning dancing from an acclaimed Colombian duo. It’s an amazing performance of high energy and rhythmic moves of the tango, merengue, salsa and bachata.

What we ate

Set on the 25th floor with sensational views of the Burj Al Arab and Arabian Gulf, La Parrilla serves brunch to your table. Dishes included Torta de Quinoa and Arepa de Pato for starters, and perfectly grilled meats and seafood for the main course, accompanied with Brazilian-style baked black beans and roasted vegetables with salsa, and all the dishes can be ordered as often as desired. On our table of four, everyone liked their meats cooked differently, so we were delighted with the hot stone plate for those who prefer things a little more well-done! A seasonal cheese platter finished the meal nicely, while desserts included Dulce de Leche with banana or acai and white chocolate cheesecake to satisfy the sweetest of cravings.

Verdict

Everything was beautifully cooked and very tasty. The views and dancing were absolutely incredible, making this a must-do brunch with a difference!

Price

Brunch The Latin Way is available on Fridays from 12:30pm to 4pm. Priced at Dhs 325 per person for food, soft drinks and mocktails or Dhs 425 per person for food with house beverages, selected cocktails and sparkling grape. Tribes @ Mall of the Emirates As soon as you walk into Tribes, you get a real experience of African culture. You really get into the music and theme of the whole place. The menu offers an excellent choice of traditional African dishes along with delicious mocktails. If you’re lucky enough to go on your birthday, you will receive a traditional African drum dance next to your table!

What we ate

There was so much on the menu that sounded amazing and we wanted to try everything! To start with, we had the Oxtail Sakshouka (baked eggs with capsicum ragout & braised oxtail meat) and the Mozambique prawns (pan fried peri-peri prawns, served with steamed rice & green mango salad). For mains, we had the Wagyu burger as well as the 500g Wagyu blade steak with a side salad, which was a real meat feast. I personally enjoy my steaks rare and it was cooked to perfection. For dessert, we shared the chocolate Malya pudding served with creamy vanilla ice cream.

Verdict

Good value for money, great vibe with excellent service and an all-round brilliant place to dine.

Starters from Dhs 48, and mains from Dhs 52.

I love blending and it’s no secret as you may have seen on my Instagram @Stephanie.pech! I like to blend my smoothies super thick so I can eat them with a spoon and “chew” them, as it allows the digestive enzymes in my mouth to pre-initiate digestion and make me fuller, faster. Very often, I spend at least 20-35 minutes reading emails or articles while I eat my breakfast. I find a thick smoothie makes me feel as full as if I’d eaten bacon and eggs and they are so much easier to prepare! Blending doesn’t spike your blood sugar as much as juicing does and fibre is one great way to lower the glycaemic index of a food, juicing eliminates just about every shred of fibre, while blending does not. Blending allows you to easily consume superfood cocktails. Let’s face it: superfoods like chlorella, maca, spirulina, cacao, goji berries, chia seeds, flax seeds and protein powder are hard to eat with your hands out of a zip lock bag. Dumping these kind of things into a blended smoothie makes it far easier to deliver boatloads of nutrients to your body. They are also the perfect post-workout meal or snack. Cleaning w it h

sunshine

During the summer, there are alternative ways of doing your laundry other than the usual washing machine. The purifying power of the sun will help you save money and the environment. Helpling, the leading online platform for home services, shows you how you can use sunlight and what to consider when you do - because even the sun has a dark side. 44 | OCTOBER Connector

A clean mattress

All allergy sufferers are aware of the nightmare of millions of mites, bed bugs and other pests that can colonise your bed. Mites love the dark and moist environment of your mattress. However, these pests can not stand sunlight, brightness and low humidity. So stick your mattress directly in the sunlight. Push those mites over the edge; strip off the sheets, brush off the mattress and vacuum it well. Afterwards, put the mattress directly under the sun, typically on a balcony or terrace. After leaving your mattress to roast in the sun for three hours, most of the mites along with their eggs won’t feel so much at home there. This should leave the mattress mite free. Caution: Latex mattresses should not be exposed to the sun as the UV rays can damage the material and overheating may cause warping.

Sunlight as a stain remover

Yes, there was life before washing machines. Back then, the sun was one of the best ways to clean fabrics. People used a process known as grass bleaching, where clothes are laid out on grass in the sun after washing them. The sunlight and moisture helps remove stains. When UV light strikes the wet fabric, hydrogen peroxide is formed. Today, this compound is mainly used to brighten hair but is also added to detergent. People hang wet laundry in the sun to oxidise it and allow the bleaching effects to occur. The intense sunlight strikes the colour and dirt molecules, removing them. Bleaching with the sun is particularly effective on your whites, especially those made of cotton or linen. Lay your clothes out for a few hours where they can get plenty of sunlight.

should bring it in, otherwise your clothes can get annoying white stripes from the washing line. Since some detergents contain optical brighteners, clothes can get yellow or green spots, simply because of too much sun. Tip: Turn your clothes inside out to reduce the risk of any stripes.

Clean windows

People are often surprised by streaks left on windows despite having just been cleaned. Once the windows have dried, ugly smudges appear and you have to start from scratch. To prevent this from happening, be aware of a few key points when cleaning windows in direct sunlight. The most important thing is to work quickly. Streaks are caused by the mixture of the suds or bubbles from detergent solution and dirt. If the liquid is not removed quickly, it dries and leaves streaks. Do not polish back and forth, as this actually causes streaks rather than prevents them. It is best to use a window wiper to avoid streaks.

Sunshine isn’t all good

You will probably want your laundry dried by sundown but take care. You might be tempted to stick your best shirt in intense sun light. However, if your laundry dries too quickly in the sunlight, it can damage and discolour certain fabrics. Remember not to leave your wet laundry under the glaring sun forever; just two hours may be enough. Once the washing is dry you www.connector.ae

Staying safe this

Halloween For families that celebrate Halloween, this special holiday is full of fun and adventure. However, all the wonderful things that make it special and exciting can also lead to problems that might be unpleasant or even dangerous. Planning ahead can make a huge difference in making sure that everybody has a great time.

Here are some tips to ensure that your child stays safe over Halloween.

things than trying to do too much and ending up with an exhausted overwhelmed child.

It’s all about the kids

Road safety

Keep things simple and separate adult celebrations from children’s celebrations. Halloween is a great time to get together with friends, but when adults are in charge of keeping children safe from harm, this is not the best time to be drinking or serving alcohol. Ensure that the activities are age appropriate. Sometimes adults and older children think it’s funny to act spooky and weird. It’s okay to joke and pretend to be frightened, but remind everyone that being really scared is not fun and that it is against the rules to tease anyone about being nervous or frightened. In a mixed group, the needs of the most vulnerable person should be honoured ahead of the wishes of anyone else. Remember that all children are different and that less is often more. Some children like going out and some prefer to stay home and greet others. It is better to enjoy doing a few 46 | OCTOBER Connector

Your child may not be used to walking along the street in the dark. Also, they may be focused on their treats, keeping up with their groups and getting more treats. If they are wearing a mask, they may also lose their peripheral vision. Even older kids might impulsively cross the street after suddenly spotting a friend. A good strategy is to set clear boundaries and go in a group with other adults and responsible older children so you can work together to keep everyone safe. Flashlights and glow sticks for both children and adults can make it easier for people to see each other and increases visibility for drivers. Use extra caution when you are driving.

Be aware of costume safety

Many costumes, although amazing to look at, can be uncomfortable to wear. They can www.connector.ae

be easy to trip on and make it hard to see. Unfamiliar shoes, wings, capes, gloves, and fabric can all affect movement. Add to this the challenge of going to unfamiliar places with steep steps and kids rushing past, and there is the potential for lots of falls. Unless they are in a controlled environment for a very short time, masks and high-heeled shoes are a bad idea for most young children. A simpler costume can make the difference between a fun adventure and a miserable disaster. It can be fun to dress up yourself and to see other adults be dressed up. Remember that young children especially need stability and having their adults dressed up can be strange or potentially upsetting. Make sure your costume, if you decide to have one, is easy to move around in and be prepared to remove your costume if it upsets your child. Some costumes are truly terrifying and should not be worn around younger children. Another costume hazard is fire. Many costumes have lots of dangly pieces which could be hazardous around candles and flame-lit walkways.

Keep cats and dogs out of the action

For both their own safety and everyone else’s, cats and dogs need to be kept away from the activities. Even normally, very calm friendly animals can become upset because people are looking and acting different. They might bite or scratch, or panic and get hit by a car. Even at home with their own families, dogs and cats are not in their normal environment. It is unfair to expect them to respond as they usually do when nothing is the same. When visiting other homes, remember that some people bring their dogs to the front door. Just because owners have complete faith in their dog’s behaviour doesn’t mean it isn’t really scary for the animal to suddenly come face to face with a child in a mask. It is safest to keep children away from dogs during Halloween, no matter what the owner says.

Take extra precautions to avoid getting lost

Halloween is noisy and dark and it can be difficult to keep track of each child in your

care every second of the time you are out. Remember that what you see and your child sees are different. Even if your child is easily visible to you, watch for that look of anxiety when your child isn’t quite sure where you are. Before going out, make a plan in case your child does get lost.

of activities you choose to participate in. Also, routines are very important for kids so to prevent meltdowns, go early and give children some time to wind down before trying to get them to go to sleep.

Review stranger safety rules

To avoid disappointment and upset stomachs, make a plan ahead of time for what to do with that bag of goodies. Teach children to focus on the joy of gathering treats without feeling the need to eat most of them, especially right away. Many treats have lots of chemicals, fat and sugar. If your child is allergic to something that is in most treats, like milk or soy, buy some favourite treats and trade after the trick-ortreating is done. If your family ends up with too much candy, discuss other good ways of using it instead of eating it all. They could trade each piece with you for a Dirham so you can have a bowl of candy for customers at work, or turn it into an art project.

During Halloween, children are encouraged to talk to strangers and take candy from them. This is fine, because you are there with them. Even if the adults you visit are people that you know, don’t assume that they are not strangers to your child - some of them will probably look pretty strange. It is important to give children clear guidelines and rules specific to what you will be doing.

Avoid a Halloween meltdown

Remember that Halloween is often very exciting and overwhelming even before trickor-treating time so make choices on the number 48 | OCTOBER Connector

Good HOMEWORK

H

habits

omework is the topic of many arguments between kids and their parents. Here are some tips to make homework time more effective and enjoyable for all concerned. 1. Create a good study area. First, designate an area where it would be ideal for your children to do their homework, usually in their room. Set up this area to make it conducive for studying by putting proper lighting, an area for studying supplies such as pencils, pens, paper, books, and other essentials and make the area free from distractions. It might be a good idea to set up a bulletin board there as well. 2. Set fixed hours. There should be a set schedule for homework. This way, they can arrange their schedules and make sure they get their homework done every day. It is also a great way for answering comments 52 | OCTOBER Connector

like, “I’ll do it later!” 3. No TV. As a general rule, kids should not watch TV while doing their homework. It is a good idea to have the television turned off when it is time to do homework, depending, of course, where the television is located. 2. The radio is OK. Contrary to what many experts recommend, actual studies have shown that children or teenagers can learn just as well when they have their favourite music playing softly in the background. 4. Set telephone rules. As a general rule, kids should be told not to use the telephone during homework hours, apart from when they need to confirm homework with a school friend. In these cases, the parents should set a fixed number of minutes for discussing schoolrelated matters so the kids can get back to their homework right away. www.connector.ae

Lunch packing tips

Y

ana Kalwani, co-founder of Pantry Café and mother of two, shares her school lunch packing tips.

• Balance healthy with fun: In kids’ minds, healthy = boring. Challenge this perception by introducing healthy snacks. Try adding a couple of baked crisps or a whole wheat cookie to go with their fruits. I bake banana muffins using whole wheat flour and flax meal or oats. Other fun items that my kids like to find in their lunch boxes include popcorn, edamame with rock salt, Actimel and strawberries with cream. • Get your kids involved: Having your child help out in the kitchen makes sure they feel good about what they are eating. Getting them involved in the planning process and allowing them to choose from a couple of (healthy) options ensures that they know what to expect in their lunch boxes and gives them a sense of ownership for their own healthy choices. • Don’t experiment: I never add new/ experimental dishes in their lunch boxes that they haven’t tried before. If there is a recipe that I would like to introduce to them, I’ll 54 | OCTOBER Connector

first serve it at home a couple of times before packing it in their lunch box. Kids are fussy eaters and sometimes get intimidated when trying new foods. • Prepare a weekly meal planner: A weekly planner helps to ensure that all daily nutrient requirements are met. A planner also comes in handy when doing your weekly grocery shop: I make sure to plan ahead to pack enough carbs for each day to help them get the extra energy they need at school. • Leave notes: These are a great way to reassure your child that you are thinking about them while they are away from home. After a certain age, lunch time for kids becomes about more than just eating - they are also learning to socialise with other children. Throwing a joke or a riddle into their lunch box allows them to share a laugh with their friends or to break the ice with new peers. Check out some of Pantry Cafe’s lunch box recipes on www.connector.ae. Pantry Café is located at Wasl Square (04-3883868) and at Bay Square, Business Bay (04-5587161). How long have you been teaching? 12 years - I’ve spent about half of my career in UK state schools and half in international education. How would you describe your teaching style? As a history teacher I’m fortunate to teach a subject that can be really brought to life in the classroom, which is something I strive to do. Students connect to the past through empathy so I will regularly ask them to ‘get into character’. I also believe in personalising the learning experience of each individual child so they are empowered to enjoy and achieve; two things which definitely go hand in hand! Why did you decide to become a teacher? I come from a family of teachers so it was perhaps inevitable that I would follow the family calling! Your best moment as a teacher? Teaching is such a rewarding job that I couldn’t narrow it down to one specific moment. The best part of being a teacher is waking up in the morning and actually wanting to go to work… there aren’t many people who can say that about their jobs! Your worst moment? It is always sad saying goodbye to a class for the final time after you have built up such a rapport with them. One sentence of advice to someone wanting to enter the profession? Learn to love strong coffee for the late nights spent marking books and exam papers! What would be your life quote? Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right. Adopting a cat?

Make it a double!

A

dopting your first cat may be a bit of challenge at first, but adopting two cats in one go? It is actually easier than you think, believe it or not. Whether you are looking to get cats that have grown up together in the same foster home or little kittens that are siblings, their already existing relationship will make the transition to a new home much easier and give you a peace of mind, knowing that your cats will never be lonely and will have each other while you are away at work. Cats were once considered to be solitary creatures. In many ways, there are solitary aspects to their behavioural patterns. However, we now know that most of them are in fact social animals who benefit from interaction with their own kind and other species. Here are just some of the many benefits of having two cats: • Twice the love and twice the cuddles. You will have two different looking cats and two different personalities to cuddle, play and 58 | OCTOBER Connector

relax with, so if one likes to cuddle and the other one likes to play, you get the best of both. • Moving into a new home is scary for any animal. Each cat will comfort and reassure the other as they transition into your new home. • Boredom can lead to destructive behaviours, so adopting two cats can help protect your furniture from scratches and your shoes from being chewed on. • Two cats that have already formed a bond are happy to share the same toys, food, water bowls and scratching posts. Since you will have to provide all of the above even for a single cat, your expenses will not actually double. However, you will still have to vaccinate and spay/neuter them both, not forgetting to mention the possibility of having to buy two feline tickets when you travel back home. • Adopting cats can often cause behavioural problems such as boredom or separation anxiety. However, the bond between two cats who have grown up together becomes very strong and special. Watching two long-time cat companions curled up together as they nap in the afternoon sun is a truly precious sight. • While you are at work, your two cats can keep each other company. Instead of spending the day alone, they will have someone to talk to and play with. 38smiles is a non-profit animal rescue group who live by the motto of “Helping the strays of today become the pets of tomorrow”. Magic & Loki ‘two peas in a pod’

Magic: My life started in a construction site. It wasn’t a great start but at least I was getting fed by a nice lady. One day my tail started hurting and turned blood red and the smell coming from it was terrible! The next day that nice lady started chasing me around, trying to grab me and shove me in a box. I don’t trust humans but now I know she was just trying to help me and take me to the vet. I had my tail amputated and also was treated for pneumonia. Now I live with my foster mum as a happy tail-less kitten, which is where I met my best friend Loki. Loki: Thanks to my good looks, I was rescued from the streets by my foster mum. She took me to the vet who confirmed that my tail was deliberately cut off! Lucky for me, it was already healing and I didn’t need surgery. I met Magic in my foster home and we are like two peas in a pod; we do everything together, and if you ask me - Magic cannot make it without me in this world, he lacks confidence and needs me for support.

Georgy & Luba Even though these 2 were rescued separately, they share a bond like no other. They have been by each other's side since day one in their foster home. Georgy the boy is very friendly, playful and outgoing and Luba the girl is more quiet and shy. They complete each other. As a package deal they have double the fluff and cuteness to offer.

Betty Boo has been with 38smiles the longest. She was supposed to be a TNR but a wound, that took 12 stitches to close and over 6 months to heal, saved her from being released back on the streets. As she can be grumpy very quickly 38smiles realised adoption days were not for her and they had very little hope of finding her a home. However, lucky for Betty she found the right foster mum, one that never gives up and keeps insisting on rehoming her fosters to the best possible families overseas! It has taken patience and a lot of love to help Betty learn to trust people. She is a Dreamies addict and it is this addiction that has led to her forever home. Her foster mum used to live in England and did parkrun every week. She also listened to the parkrun show podcast, hosted by Danny Norman and Nicola Forwood. One day Danny was talking about his cats being addicted to Dreamies, so her foster mum posted a picture of Betty eating Dreamies. This actually led to another foster cat being flown to England to his forever home. Now, Danny is going to adopt Betty! He has a stock of Dreamies waiting for her - they just need your help to get her there. Betty Boo is one smart cat who totally deserves her happy ever after. Please email info@38smiles.com if you can help.

Shrinking Violet Wrap @ JAM Beauty Lounge

JAM Beauty Lounge is all about unwinding, retaining your beauty and gaining body confidence. They use the most natural therapies and organic products. Keen to help women lose weight and improve their skin tone naturally, owner Jyoti, has researched some of the best treatments on the market and is an advocate of the Shrinking Violet Wrap. This pain-free inchloss treatment can also help improve the look of cellulite and stretchmarks.

What’s involved?

My whole body was covered in the Shrinking Violet oil. Then, I was wrapped in a type of cling wrap for an hour. The ingredients used during the wrap include an active phospholipid solution and pre-blended essential oils, which can penetrate the skin in seconds. While the oil worked its magic, I enjoyed a facial and foot reflexology - lovely! Once the fat cell is broken down, it can easily be removed from your body, so it is essential that you drink lots of water following the treatment.

What are the results?

Once unwrapped, I was delighted to discover I had lost a total of 24cms! With the biggest loss in one area being my waist at 6cms and it has stayed off. Plus, my skin looked firmer and tighter - this is definitely a one-of-a-kind treatment.

How much?

The Shrinking Violet Wrap is priced at Dhs 650. JAM Beauty Lounge is located in Garhoud close to the Aviation Club. Call 04-2566808 for appointments. -L.C. 64 | OCTOBER Connector

What are the results?

This treatment is great for flushing out the toxins and boosting your lymphatic system. Immediately afterwards I felt refreshed and revived. Plus, my skin felt softer and more hydrated. I’ve had this treatment a few times now and never fail to enjoy it. You can boost the effects by having a quick steam beforehand as well.

AW15 make-up must haves By celebrity Make-Up Artist Hannah Lisa www.hannahlisamakeup.com

As a new season approaches, it’s time to revamp your make-up bag. Out with the old and in with the new, as they say. Autumn 2015 brings with it new products, shades and even technology.

W

hat better way to start, than with Make Up For Ever’s new Ultra HD foundation. Make Up For Ever is constantly keeping up with not only trends, but technology too. Re-inventing their original HD foundation, Ultra HD has been designed with the new 4k cameras in mind. 4k cameras pick up 4 times as much detail as an HDready camera, and so this foundation has been specifically designed to be invisible, even under these resolutions, whilst still providing the level of coverage which is paramount for TV. The result, is a medium yet buildable coverage which looks and feels like natural skin, giving you a flawless and even complexion (Dhs 210 at MUFE stores and Sephora stores). Now for tackling trends. NARS have launched a new shade of their semi-matte lipsticks. ‘VIP red’ is a dark brique red which is perfect for nailing the 70s style that is dominating the catwalks at the moment. It also ties in nicely with the berry lip which always pops up around this time of year (Dhs 130 at Sephora). Another huge trend at the moment as you may well know, is ‘strobing’. This is the art of highlighting your face in order to enhance 66 | OCTOBER Connector

your favourite features. The easiest way to do this is with a powder highlighter. Rodial have recently launched a range of sculpting products, which includes the Instaglam Compact Deluxe Illuminating Powder. Being compact means you pick up the perfect amount of product and application is easy and even. It comes in one universal champagne shade which warms every sink tone and gives a beautiful sun kissed glow (Dhs 360 at Paris Gallery). In the world of beauty, when someone says ‘naked’, we all know they’re talking about the Urban Decay eye shadow pallets. The new ‘Naked Smoky’ is ‘un’natural selection at its best - taking the best colours from past palettes and combining them with 9 brand new shades to produce the ultimate product in convenience and glamour. It’s really all you need to create a multitude of neutral smoky eye styles in a range of different shades (Dhs 279 at Sephora). To top off the perfect smoky eye, you need the perfect mascara. bareMinerals’ lash domination is exactly that. It gives you immense volume and length whilst still being gentle on your lashes. bareMinerals continues to come up with quality products whilst staying true to its ethos of creating products that are nourishing and kind to the skin, and this is no exception. Made with quinoa proteins and minerals, it is the first mascara I’ve tried that actually feels like it is conditioning your lashes whilst giving a false lash effect (Dhs 109 at Sephora). www.connector.ae

HEALTH & fitness

What’s waking you? You’re not an insomniac, you can fall asleep easily, but something always stirs you from your lovely slumber. There are many reasons why your sleep may be disturbed: here are the key ones, and what you can do about them. By Alex Gazzola. Restless legs What is it? Also known as Ekbom’s Syndrome, this is characterised by tingling, twitching and discomfort in the legs, and an urge to move them repeatedly in order to relieve the unpleasant feelings. Some patients describe an annoying ‘crawling’ sensation. Why does it happen? The causes are generally unknown. In some cases, it is a side-effect of certain drugs and medications (such as antidepressants, anti-histamines or steroids), or of kidney problems or an underactive thyroid. 70 | OCTOBER Connector

What should I do? Stretching, movement and massages can help relieve symptoms both before bed and if you are woken during the night. Any extra tips? Professor Chris Idzikowski, a sleep researcher and medic, says: “In many young women, low iron levels can be associated with the development of restless legs and related ‘creepy-crawly’ sensations up, down and around the leg. Many women who are vegetarians may be low on iron, and it seems pregnant women suffer from this problem more than anyone else too”. Speak to your doctor or dietitian about your iron intake - they may recommend a blood test. Nocturia What is it? Having to get up to urinate more than once during the night. Why does it happen? Usually, especially www.connector.ae

among younger people, this happens because you have drunk too much fluid before bed-time, or you didn’t empty your bladder properly and fully before lights-off. Yoga and Pilates or any other activity which works the pelvic area can tighten the muscles around your bladder too, giving you the urge to empty your bladder more regularly, including at night. Other possibilities include underlying cystitis or (more rarely) an early sign of diabetes. In men, it could also be benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - a natural swelling of the prostate gland, increasingly likely as men get older. What should I do? Just get up out of bed calmly, walk to the bathroom, empty your bladder, don’t flush the toilet (the noise will wake you further), and try to avoid turning on lights if you know you can make the journey to the bathroom safely. Avoid looking at the time, and just go back to bed. Any extra tips? Try to plan for the event so that your journey to the bathroom is easy and not disruptive - leave relevant doors open and toilet seats down. Rather than drink less total fluid during the whole day, drink more in the morning and afternoon, and less at night especially late at night. Get your blood sugar levels tested to ensure it is not diabetes. Night cramps What is it? A night cramp is a sudden sharp pain caused by a muscle spasm, usually in the calf. Why does it happen? Mostly, the cause is unknown. However, like restless legs, some medications and drugs can occasionally be to blame. Other possible causes include muscular strain, dehydration and excess alcohol. What should I do? Stretching may help, and massaging the effected area can ease the pain. It is a good idea to work regular, gentle calf stretches into your day-to-day exercise or fitness routine. Speak to your doctor if you are regularly affected. The drug quinine is sometimes used to treat night cramps, but there are a lot of contraindications with its use, so you must seek proper medical advice. Any extra tips? Sleep researcher Dr Neil Stanley says: “There are some supplements www.connector.ae

especially designed for cramps which you could try, and some studies suggest taking magnesium salts and/or calcium may help. The herb valerian may help relax muscles. But unless it is troubling you regularly, occasional cramps are quite normal and something most people learn to live with”. Hunger and thirst What is it? Waking up with hunger pangs or dry mouth and throat, and with a strong urge to eat and/or drink. Why does it happen? Thirst in the night can often be brought on by having drunk too much alcohol earlier that day. Hunger can be due to a drop in blood sugar levels. “You really ought not to wake up hungry,” says nutrition scientist Anna Denny, “so if it happens regularly you may need to look at what you are eating as an evening meal, because it may not be substantial enough”. What should I do? “If you wake up hungry and can’t get back to sleep, do eat something small, like a piece of toast or an apple,” says Denny. “It should fit in with a healthy and balanced diet. Unfortunately, you are more likely to choose an apple during the day than in the middle of the night, so be careful not to go for biscuits or chocolate as night-time snacks”. Any other tips? If you have drunk alcohol, drink at least a large glass of water before going to bed. Keep some water by the side of your bed to sip in case you wake up dry-mouthed. Eat a proper evening meal - but not too late at night. Night sweats What is it? Medically known as hyperhidrosis, this is basically excessive sweating during sleeping - which can be severe enough to wake you. Night sweats are not usually related to heat or the environment, so are just as common in cooler months as warmer ones. Why does it happen? “The most common cause in women is menopause, but other causes include bacterial or viral infections, an overactive thyroid, or certain medications - especially diabetes medication,” says Dr Neil Stanley. What should I do? It is important to see your doctor if you are waking with night sweats. A Connector OCTOBER | 71

HEALTH & fitness

doctor can perform thyroid, liver and kidney function tests, and take blood tests, to eliminate any underlying medical cause. Any extra tips? Stress and depression can sometimes contribute or cause night sweats, so do talk to someone about this if either applies to you. Have light natural cotton bedding and nightwear - do not wrap up too warmly at night. Smoking and alcohol should be avoided. The herb black cohosh may help middle-aged women - but always seek advice from a herbalist and doctor before taking it. Snoring What is it? Noisy vibrations in your mouth and throat when you are asleep. Why does it happen? There are muscles in your throat, mouth and nose which keep your airways open during the day and which relax at night - this relaxation can sometimes cause these airways to close up, restricting incoming and outgoing air, making the vibrations more likely. What should I do? Snoring is not usually a health problem, unless it wakes you up and disturbs your sleep or that of your partner, or if you are tired during the day and are waking up not feeling fully refreshed. Smoking, alcohol and allergies can all contribute to snoring, and if you are overweight, losing weight can help. Any extra tips? There are some over-thecounter products such as nasal strips and throat sprays which claim to help by opening up and lubricating the airways, and which some people find very useful. You could also try elevating the end of your bed, and experimenting with different pillows. If you have blocked nasal passages, clearing them up with a eucalyptus steam inhalation may also help. 72 | OCTOBER Connector

Acid reflux What is it? Also known as gastrooesophagal reflux disease (GORD), acid reflux occurs when the stomach’s acid contents spill back into the oesophagus (foodpipe). It can cause heartburn and is particularly troublesome at night when you are lying down. What causes it? It can be aggravated by alcohol, coffee, fatty foods and smoking. Pregnant women and those who are overweight are more susceptible. What should I do? Avoid eating heavy meals at night, and raise the end of your bed. There are medications you can take, such as antacids, and some traditional remedies include pure liquorice, aloe vera and slippery elm. Any other tips? Acid reflux can also be caused by a problem with the valve where the oesophagus meets the stomach, so do see your doctor if you are experiencing severe symptoms. Sleep apnoea What is it? In this condition, sufferers stop breathing - many times during the night. Why does it happen? It happens when the muscles in the throat relax completely that a total blockage of the airways results. Deprived of oxygen, your brain wakes you up and you start breathing again. “This can happen hundreds of times a night, and you may not remember any of the incidences, but it can make you feel exhausted the next day, making everyday tasks like driving more dangerous,” says Dr Neil Stanley. “Sleep apnoea may increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as stroke or high blood pressure. It tends to be associated with the overweight, but even slim people can be affected”. What should I do? If you think you are suffering from sleep apnoea - possibly because a partner has suggested it - you must seek medical advice. Treatment may involve the use of a continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) machine to keep you properly ventilated at night. Any other tips? Maintain your ideal weight it really will help. www.connector.ae

Looking after your breast health

T

he greatest weapon in the fight against breast cancer is awareness. Whether you have symptoms, concerns about family history or want an overall assessment of your breast health, it is essential to follow there three easy steps: Step 1: Breast Self-Examination (BSE) A woman should begin practicing BSE by the age of 20 and should continue throughout her life. Regular BSE will teach you to know how your breasts normally feel so that you can more readily detect any changes. Step 2: Clinical Examinations A physical breast examination by a specialist is recommended every three years for women between the ages of 20-39 and every year for women after the age of 40. Your doctor will recommend screenings or diagnostic investigations based on your medical and family history, any findings or concerns discussed in your initial consultation and your breast anatomy. Step 3: Breast Imaging Breast imaging is a general term that encompasses many different kinds of imaging. Breast Ultrasounds, Mammograms and MRIs are non-invasive and painless imaging studies that look at the breast anatomy to 74 | OCTOBER Connector

evaluate it for disease. It can be used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in patients without symptoms or as a diagnostic tool to diagnose breast diseases in women experiencing symptoms. If you are recommended to have a breast biopsy, don’t panic. A biopsy is a quick, minor procedure that involves removing cells or tissue from the area of interest. These cells or tissue are then studied under a microscope to determine diagnosis. After your breast imaging is performed, you will have a follow-up consultation with your doctor to discuss your results and if any treatment or follow-up imaging is required. When breast cancer is detected early, the chances of survival are highest. Allied Medical Center is supporting the fight against breast cancer by investing in clinical expertise and the latest technology. They offer tailored Breast Health Services led by a multidisciplinary female clinical team including consultations, diagnostic, screening, imaging and biopsy procedures. If partners seem to be lost in hidden depths bear with them at least until the 10th, when Mercury, the planet representing communications, seems to move forward when they should be a lot more communicative. The new Moon appears in Libra on the 13th with the promise of fresh beginnings and promotes new ideas and opportunities for you to take up. Saturn moves into the area of your solar chart stabilising and controlling finance. It would be a good idea in the first few weeks of October to make sure your financial outgoings do not exceed your incoming monies. At least you will be in a better position to entertain some special people who may want to celebrate something around the 25th. You are likely to feel in a more cautionary mood now that Saturn in Sagittarius washes you with its cool and controlling influence. You might as well accept the feeling for awhile that you seem to put two steps forward and one back - i.e. not getting anywhere fast. Nevertheless, it is an opportunity for reward from quiet reflection on outstanding issues.

CAPRICORN 22 Dec - 19 Jan

There should be no shortage of opportunities to travel if domesticity is getting you down. It would be a spiritual revival for you to get away probably on a long haul journey where you can fulfil some escapist dreams. Developing a whole new way of thinking could set you on a totally different path in life - perhaps one you never thought possible.

AQUARIUS 20 Jan - 17 Feb

It’s probably a bit late to wonder were all your money may have gone if you have been out and about shopping in the sales. Look to the advice of an older friend to see how they better manage their finance and budgets for a more comfortable future outcome. Cheeky chat from any siblings may also be a source of valid information.

PISCES 18 Feb - 19 Mar

Fiery Mars and feminine Venus meet in your house of partners, so life could take on a very romantic turn. Jubilant and generous Jupiter is also there, so someone with a lot to give in more ways than one could come into your life. The influence of Neptune in Pisces could cause you to think you are dreaming, so stay alert and enjoy life to the full. 80 | OCTOBER Connector

People might find some of your ideas rather odd and might be reluctant to pursue them, but do try not to let their reactions irritate you more than you can help. If you show more rational behaviour the chance of an idyllic job may be offered to you. Working with a loved one from home may be a possibility - so work related harmony is the order of the day. A lot of success, happiness and opportunities for romance are likely along with the pleasure of being involved with children. The full Moon can indicate a flood of tears, but by the time it occurs in Taurus on the 27th your emotions may well be overflowing from appreciation of your good fortune. You do know not to gamble, don’t you? Saturn is now in your solar house of partners and stays there until December 2017, so you can expect relationships with either personal or business partners to take on a more serious mode for some time. Domestic issues may take on a different but steadier path whilst encouraging partners to reach out and create tighter control of their careers.

CANCER 21 Jun - 22 Jul

Numerous journeys are still indicated this month; both short and long haul along with some mystical experiences. You may have a strong sense of commitment about a project, but don’t let an overpowering personality persuade you take on more than you can comfortably manage. Use your innate charm to sort any problems with neighbours or siblings.

LEO 23 Jul - 22 Aug

On the 9th harmonious loving Venus joins both the Sun and fiery Mars in your house of possessions, i.e. your personal abilities and obviously, finance. The planets sit in opposition to vague and ethereal Neptune, so stay focused in order to maintain any goals in order to stop them from dissolving in a dreamy nebulous mist.

VIRGO 23 Aug - 22 Sep

Saturn moves into the domestic area of your chart driving a need to settle down into a more secure position. The 15th to 25th are hot dates for romance and on the 29th the two planets involved in relationships, male Mars and feminine Venus meet together in Virgo. You couldn’t ask for a better indication for the development of a relationship. www.connector.ae
