EDITOR’S NOTE Happy New Year to you all and welcome 2019! The New Year always brings about new resolutions and good intentions for most of us. I am no different, and will at least attempt to take the steps that will make the changes I want. What has helped is looking into all the options open to us to start the year on the right track. In this issue, we take a look at some of the diets we can follow, how simple they are and the different benefits they offer, and we also look at food intolerances and how they can affect us and what we can do about them. If you are keen on going out and still want to be healthy, we round up some of the many dining options with a calorie controlled menu, so dieting doesn’t have to mean staying in. Talking of going out, with nice weather and some amazing landmarks and views, we have picked some of the restaurants around Dubai that make you want to sit for hours and just take in your surroundings, from views of Burj Khalifa to the waters of the Creek. There’s loads going on in town again this month with the Asian Football Cup, Othello, Schools and Childcare Show and a small matter of the Dubai Shopping Festival, we’re in for another great month, hope you are ready for it! Bingewatch Nailed It! Rating: 11+ Let’s face it, cooking shows are great and all, but not everyone is a master chef. That’s where this hilarious TV show comes in. Nailed It! is a bake-off with a twist - the bakers are total amateurs. As possibly the ‘realest’ reality cooking show, the mammoth tasks performed by people who have little to no knowledge of baking result in some major catastrophes that will have you in stitches as you relate to the woes from the safety of your sofa. Family Time Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle Rating: PG 13 This classic tale has been reimagined by Netflix. Far removed from the jolly singalong that is Disney’s The Jungle Book, www.connector.ae
this story is a slightly darker and more sinister look at Rudyard Kipling’s novel. With even the CGI characters looking a little worse for wear, the interpretation takes on a more raw adaptation as Mowgli takes on Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan. Throwback at the Theatre Mary Poppins Returns Rating: PG Kicking off a year of nostalgia is Mary Poppins. And, who better to take on Julie Andrews’ iconic performance than Emily Blunt? The film maintains the same characters as Jane and Michael, now adults lose the magic in their lives. P robably not for vegetarians, Doors Freestyle Grill is the ideal spot for carnivores. Located in one of the city’s oldest backdrops, the Dubai Creek, the restaurant adopts the traditional ideals of Turkish dining. Predominantly revolving around meat, Doors Freestyle Grill has upped the ante on presentation. Complete with fire, hot stone cooking and trolleys of food brought to your table, the dining experience becomes dinner and a show in seconds.
We started our meal with a pomegranate salad which was drizzled in balsamic vinegar and topped with goat's cheese, creating an infusion of sweet, salty and tanginess. But the main courses are definitely the main event, we decided to go all-out and get Thor’s Hammer Steak. If it’s good enough for the God of Thunder, then it’s definitely alright with us! R egistering your children in Dubai’s private schools can give parents goosebumps. The process of admission starts with applying to a school. From choosing a right school to following the admission process, and making timely payments of school fees may look like a tedious process. However, in this feature we have broken down the whole process in tiny steps, which would help parents stay cool, calm and informed as they jump on to the admissions bandwagon in Dubai. School application There is no restriction on the number of schools parents can apply for. However, each application costs between Dhs 5001,000 in Dubai, therefore parents need to bear in mind the cost factor before applying to multiple schools. If as a parent, you are fine with the additional costs, there is no restriction. 32 JANUARY CONNECTOR
Clive Pierrepont , Consultant at Taaleem said, “Parents can apply to as many schools as they wish, however this can be expensive as admissions applications can cost between Dhs 500-1,000 at various schools. With groups of schools such as Taaleem, one application will usually suffice as admissions applications can be transferred internally from school to school in accordance with parents’ wishes. In Abu Dhabi, the government authority does not allow collection of application fees, which means parents can apply to as many schools as they like, which is highly recommended as school places are very limited.” Admission process and duration Once you shortlist the schools, the second major step is to go through the admission process, which may sound tedious but schools make every effort to keep it simple and easy. #connectordubai
KIDS & EDUCATION In general, the whole process is laid out online on the websites of respective schools’. Once parents apply online and submit the required documents, schools generally get back within a week, however this may take longer if you are on waiting list or it is a special case such as mid-year admission. Yvette Mitchell, registrar at Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) said, “JESS offers an online application form where prospective parents can complete an online expression of interest form to begin the application process. We have a very high volume of applications to JESS and after receiving the initial expression of interest, our admission team will respond within one week and begin the application process.” A spokesperson for Brighton College Dubai said, “At Brighton College Dubai parents are required to submit an application via our website. Upon receiving the application, a member of the admissions team will make contact to discuss the school and details of the pupil and will request the essential supporting documents in order to commence the application process. Parents will be invited to visit and tour the school and meet members of the College Leadership Team if they have not already done so. Once documents have been received the pupil will then be invited to attend an introduction meeting/entry assessment at the college. Should this be successful, a Formal Offer Letter and acceptance form will be emailed to the parents.” He continued, “Prospective www.connector.ae
parents can expect to receive through the admissions office a final decision over an offer of a place at the school from the Headmaster. This is done in writing within five working days of the final assessment, confidential report request, work samples or interview.” Admission tests The school conducts assessments of all applicants in order to provide information to teachers as to the child’s level of language competency and basic skills. This enables teachers to ensure a smooth transition and to maximise continued progress in learning. Shahida Patel, Admissions Officer, Dubai British School Jumeirah Park said, “ Children who apply to the school from within Dubai are invited to attend an assessment at the school and overseas applicants take assessments remotely at their current school. Children visiting the school receive a warm and welcoming greeting, followed by an assessment conducted by a teacher or member of the admissions team. A child who will be joining Years 1 to 4 will be required to provide an English writing sample and will have the opportunity to share their interests and hobbies with us during the assessment. Tuition fees Once a school notifies parents that their child has been accepted and if they are willing to accept the offer, they need to deposit school fees and acceptance deposits, if required before the first term starts. Parents generally have up to 10 days to make the payments.
Making an appeal in case of rejection Parents can always appeal to the school for a reason their child was rejected. Schools can then set up a meeting for the parents with the principal or the head of the school to explain them why the application was rejected.
Clive Pierrepont of Taaleem said, “The application fee is a one-off, non-refundable payment. After a place has been offered, parents will be asked to pay a deposit, usually within 10 business days to secure the place, this may be refundable under certain circumstances in accordance with the regulators’ policies. It is then discounted from Term 1 fees. Invoices for Term 1 fees are issued one month before the first day of school. Full payment of Term 1 fees must be complete before the child can begin attending. However, if there are any difficulties then parents are asked to contact the school and discuss a solution to any short-term difficulties.” Yvette Mitchell of JESS said, “JESS parents must accept the offer within 5 days and they will then need to pay an Acceptance Deposit

A spokesperson at Brighton College Dubai said, “Should a pupil not be offered a space at Brighton College, we would welcome parents to further discuss the decision with the Head of Early Years, Head or Prep or Head of the Senior School and where necessary the pupil may be asked to sit a reassessment.” Can parents change their mind after accepting the school offer? If parents change their mind about accepting a school place within a reasonable time, they should inform the school as soon as possible as they may be eligible for a refund as per KHDA guidelines. These simple steps can take away parents anxiety related to school admission process. It is always better to refer to each school’s website and meet the registration team in person to get your queries answered.

I t is estimated that up to 20% of the world’s population may have a food intolerance. This condition, is however not life threatening like food allergies and causes discomfort when intolerant food is consumed in large amount. This feature discusses the early signs, symptoms and treatment of food intolerance and suggests how can one keep a track of them. What is food intolerance It is a gastrointestinal situation when a person is unable to digest a food. However, it is different from a food allergy. People who are intolerant of any food item can consume the food in small quantities but cannot consume the food in larger quantities. example, people who are milk intolerant can have milk in their tea and coffee but not large quantities e.g. a glass of milk. This is unlike a food allergy where the individual would need to be 100% free from their trigger food.” Dr. Huda Kataa, Consultant Gastroenterologist in Mediclinic Dubai Mall said, “It is the difficulty in digesting certain kind of food. It is very common , it may affect up to 20% of the population. It is claimed to affect more than half of the patients who suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is different from food allergy when patient’s immune system reacts to even tiny amount of certain food and the reaction is abrupt and can be life threatening , while in food intolerance the severity of symptoms is proportional to the CONNECTOR JANUARY 43
HEALTH & WELLBEING amount of food ingested, the reaction is more delayed and not life threatening.” Most common food intolerance Lactose found in dairy items is the most common food intolerance. The list also includes fructose which means inability to absorb sugar found in fruit and honey. Dr. Huda Kataa of Mediclinic Dubai Mall said, “Additionally, there is intolerance to fermentable carbohydrate found in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, intolerance to Ultra Processed Food (UPFs) which are industrial formulations derived from food and additives to make food more palatable and durable; Celiac disease (Gluten intolerance), None Celiac gluten / wheat intolerance (intolerant to other component in wheat than gluten ). Other food intolerances are seen in migraine (chocolate and strawberry), sulfite sensitivity (alcohol) causing severe attack of asthma.” Dr. Farah Fiaz, Family Medicine Specialist of HealthBay Polyclinic said, “Lactose which is present in dairy is the commonest intolerance. Causes of food intolerance There can be a number of reasons for food intolerance and can vary from person to person. However, the most common reason is the absence of enzymes which help in digesting foods. Jasna Kizhakkeveetil, Registered Dietitian at Aster Clinic, Al Qusais said, “Food intolerance can be caused due to the enzyme deficiencies in the stomach that prevent it from breaking down certain compounds in food, a sensitivity to additives and preservatives that are added to natural and packaged foods and an adverse reaction to naturally occurring chemicals in certain foods.” Early signs of food intolerance The symptoms of food intolerance begin to show after a few hours of consuming food items in large quantities. Symptoms can vary from person to person. It is advisable to keep a diary if one suspects to be intolerant of certain food items. If symptoms repeat every time, it can be a sign of food intolerance. Jasna Kizhakkeveetil of Aster Clinic said, “There are a host of symptoms that can identify when you have a food intolerance. How do doctors test for food While some food intolerances can be diagnosed through tests, others are diagnosed through the elimination process. Doctor keeps track of food consumption and record subsequent reactions of the stomach after every meal. Then, susceptible items are removed from the meals. Then, the same items are introduced one at a time in order to ascertain which particular food was causing symptoms.
How can food intolerance be treated Once the problematic food substance has been identified, the simple situation is to put an end to that particular food’s consumption. Lactose intolerance can be treated by taking the deficient enzyme (lactase) with meals containing dairy product, and patients with irritable bowel syndrome have significant improvement of their symptoms after following low fermentable carbohydrate diet.

The Paleo Diet The term ‘paleo’ comes from the palaeolithic era, when man first began using tools. The diet consists of foods that can be hunted and fished - such as meat and seafood - and foods that can be gathered - such as eggs, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. This eliminates any processed foods and takes it right back to the basics, essentially living off the land. Although there is no official “Paleo Diet” regime, it is generally seen as a low-
The Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean Diet essentially reflects the eating pattern of people living in the Mediterranean, with lots of vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fish, nuts and beans. As you enter it, your therapist asks you to sit down on a very stylish lounge sofa and you dip your feet in lukewarm water. The therapist starts the treatment by drying off your feet and massaging them. The treatment is everything you expect from a signature massage. The pressure points, the time given to massage every body part is very wisely designed and leave you wanting to come back again. To save and also manage your finances may sound like a complex task however it is not rocket science, a little thought and attention can increase your saving capabilities for emergencies, for the future and for retirement. From creating a budget to eliminating unnecessary expenses and saving for your retirement, small steps can lead you to a financially secure future. www.connector.ae
1. Create a budget- The first step to taking control of your finances is doing a budget. It will take a little effort, but it is a great way to get a quick snapshot of the money you have coming in and going out. After paying off one debt account, move all the money you were paying on the first debt to the next debt and continue from there, creating a debtpaydown “snowball effect.� Once you are totally out of debt, make a commitment to stay out of debt. Always leave your credit cards at home, and save up an emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses so you do not need to turn to a credit card to cover them. 5. Slash or remove unnecessary expenses- There is no fixed rule or guide in terms of how much you save. No one can suggest what you should do with your money.
