Waleed, what fuels your relentless drive for innovation and excellence in supply chain management, and how has this passion shaped your career journey?

My passion for innovation in supply chain management is driven by the continuous pursuit of optimizing processes, enhancing efficiency, and achieving strategic alignment with broader organizational goals. This drive stems from an intrinsic desire to transform traditional procurement functions into strategic, value-adding components within organizations. Early in my career at FERTIL and Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), I realized the impact of strategic procurement on operational success, which fueled my commitment to innovation. Over the years, this passion has led me to pioneer digital procurement transformations and implement best-in-class practices across various government entities in Abu Dhabi.

These efforts have not only streamlined procurement processes but have also set new benchmarks for operational excellence.

In your view, how is the landscape of procurement set to transform in the next decade, and what pivotal role will digital transformation and emerging technologies play in this evolution?

The procurement landscape is set to undergo a paradigm shift in the coming decade, heavily influenced by the rapid advancement of digital technologies. The traditional, transactional nature of procurement is being replaced by a more strategic and data-driven approach. One of the most significant changes we anticipate is the integration of Artificial

Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into procurement processes. These technologies will enable predictive analytics, allowing procurement professionals to forecast demand with greater accuracy, optimize inventory levels, and anticipate potential disruptions in the supply chain.

Blockchain technology will play a pivotal role in enhancing transparency and security within procurement systems. By providing immutable records of transactions, blockchain will help in mitigating risks associated with fraud and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

This will be particularly important in sectors where traceability and authenticity are critical, such as pharmaceuticals and food supply chains.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is another technology poised to revolutionize procurement by automating routine tasks such as order processing and invoice management. This automation will free up procurement professionals to focus on strategic activities like supplier relationship management and value creation.

Digital transformation is not just about adopting new technologies; it also involves a cultural shift towards agility and continuous improvement.

Organizations that embrace digital transformation will see procurement evolve into a strategic partner that drives innovation and contributes to overall business growth.

How do you ensure you remain at the forefront of industry trends and cuttingedge technologies, continually pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in supply chain management?

Remaining at the forefront of industry trends requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, continuous learning is crucial. I make it a priority to attend industry conferences, webinars, and training

sessions that focus on the latest developments in supply chain management. Engaging with thought leaders and participating in discussions on emerging trends helps me gain fresh insights and perspectives.

Networking plays a vital role in staying updated. I actively participate in industry forums and professional associations, such as the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS). These platforms provide valuable opportunities to exchange ideas with peers and experts, keeping me informed about best practices and innovations.

Another key strategy is collaborating with technology providers and startups that are at the forefront of supply chain innovation. By engaging with these companies, I gain early access to new tools and solutions that can be integrated into our procurement processes.

Internally, I foster a culture of innovation within my teams, encouraging them to experiment with new approaches and technologies. By creating an environment where creativity is valued, we continuously explore ways to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in our supply chain operations.

Achieving recognition as one of the Top 10 Supply Chain Executives globally is a testament to a set of core principles and strategies that have guided my career. One of the fundamental principles is strategic alignment. I ensure that procurement strategies are closely aligned

Another critical strategy is stakeholder engagement. I believe in building strong relationships with both internal stakeholders and external partners. Effective communication and collaboration with suppliers, customers, and cross-functional teams are essential to creating value and achieving mutual goals.

Continuous improvement is another pillar of my success. I have always embraced the concept of kaizen, striving for incremental improvements in all aspects of supply chain management. This approach has led to significant efficiency gains and cost savings over time.

Furthermore, resilience and adaptability have been crucial in navigating the rapidly changing business environment. The ability to quickly respond to disruptions, such as those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, has underscored the importance of agile and robust supply chains.

Lastly, investing in people has been a cornerstone of my leadership. By nurturing talent, providing training, and creating opportunities for professional growth, I have built high-performing teams that are capable of executing complex procurement strategies effectively.

Is there a mentor or influential figure in your life who has significantly impacted your professional growth, and how did their guidance shape your career path?

Several mentors have influenced my journey, but one stands out—a senior leader at Ruwais

They taught me the value of resilience, ethical practices, and the importance of aligning procurement objectives with organizational goals. This mentorship instilled in me a sense of purpose and the confidence to lead transformative initiatives, shaping my career path profoundly.

To you, what does “authentic leadership” truly embody, and how do you integrate this philosophy into your daily leadership practices?

Authentic leadership, to me, is about leading with integrity, empathy, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of others. It involves being transparent about one’s values and decisions, fostering an environment of trust and respect.

In my daily practices, I integrate authentic leadership by leading by example. I demonstrate the behaviors and values I expect from my team members, such as accountability, collaboration, and ethical conduct. This approach helps in building credibility and trust within the team.

I also place a strong emphasis on open communication. By maintaining an open-door policy, I encourage team members to share their ideas, concerns, and feedback. This not only fosters a culture of inclusivity but also helps in identifying and addressing issues promptly.

Empathy is another critical aspect of authentic leadership. Understanding and considering the perspectives of others allows me to make decisions that are fair and considerate

of the team’s needs. This has been particularly important during times of change or uncertainty, where support and reassurance are crucial.

Lastly, authentic leadership involves continuous self-reflection. I regularly assess my leadership style and seek feedback to identify areas for improvement. This commitment to personal growth ensures that I remain an effective and inspiring leader.

Beyond your professional achievements, what are some personal passions or hobbies that bring balance to your life and inspire your work?

Outside of my professional life, I am deeply passionate about community service and environmental conservation. These activities not only bring balance to my life but also inspire my work by reminding me of the broader impact of sustainable practices. I also enjoy mentoring young professionals, which keeps me connected to emerging talent and fresh perspectives in the industry. These hobbies and passions enhance my leadership approach, reinforcing the importance of social responsibility and continuous learning.

Looking ahead, where do you envision your career and contributions to the supply chain industry in the next five years, and what goals are you most eager to accomplish?

In the next five years, I envision my career evolving towards further influencing global procurement strategies, particularly in the areas of digital transformation and sustainable supply chains. I aim to contribute to the development of more resilient, transparent, and ethical procurement practices. One of my primary goals is to lead initiatives that

integrate advanced technologies, such as AI and blockchain, to revolutionize procurement processes. Additionally, I am eager to mentor the next generation of supply chain leaders, fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability in the industry.

What actionable advice would you offer to organizations aiming to craft and execute impactful supply chain strategies in an era defined by rapid change and innovation?

In today’s dynamic environment, organizations need to embrace a range of strategies to craft effective and resilient supply chains. One essential approach is leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. These tools enable predictive analytics, enhance transparency, and provide realtime monitoring, which collectively streamline operations and improve decision-making.

Another critical factor is enhancing supply chain visibility. By ensuring that all stakeholders

have access to real-time information, organizations can improve their responsiveness to market fluctuations and potential disruptions.

This visibility is key to maintaining control and agility in the supply chain.

Agility itself is a cornerstone of modern supply chain management. Organizations must design their supply chains to adapt swiftly to changing market conditions, which could involve diversifying their supplier base or adopting flexible contracting models that allow for rapid scaling.

Risk management is also paramount.

Organizations should develop comprehensive strategies to identify vulnerabilities within their supply chains and implement measures to mitigate these risks, such as creating redundancy for critical suppliers and enhancing cybersecurity.

Finally, fostering a culture of continuous improvement ensures that the supply chain remains competitive. Regularly reviewing and refining processes, encouraging innovation, and staying abreast of industry trends are all vital practices.

Fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation requires creating an environment that values curiosity, experimentation, and

collaboration. I encourage my teams to participate in professional development programs, industry conferences, and crossfunctional projects that broaden their expertise. Regular knowledge-sharing sessions and brainstorming workshops help to spark new ideas and solutions. By recognizing and rewarding innovative efforts, I motivate my teams to push boundaries and take calculated risks. This approach not only keeps the team engaged but also ensures that we remain adaptable and prepared to navigate the dynamic supply chain landscape.

Hi Ashley. What sparked your interest in change management and transformation?

While at Georgetown, I majored in both Marketing and Operations and Information Management.

Through learning about both topics, I found a love for the intersection of human behavior and technology. I was able to apply this to my work as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton and Deloitte Consulting and began specializing in

methodologies to help people adopt technology applications and systems.

What do you love the most about your current role?

I’ve spent a lot of time in my career focused on the infrastructure and technology required to make business transformation successful.

In my current role, I love that I get to now focus on the people-related aspects of change,

I am very passionate about partnering with senior leaders to drive strategies that keep people topof-mind throughout transformation initiatives.

What emerging trends or innovations will shape the future of change management?

Recently, I’ve seen momentum on how to bring user experience (UX) and user-centered design (UCD) to the forefront of change management and product development. UCD pushes project teams to better understand and prioritize the needs, desires, and pain points of stakeholders as they experience processes and systems. By leveraging UCD to create a solution that meets users' needs, change management can drive a smoother transition and adoption of that solution. Through the combination of these two disciplines, organizations can increase the likelihood of successful implementation and

achieving desired outcomes. I am really excited to see more developments in the future.

What impact do you believe increased diversity and inclusion would have on innovation, creativity, and progress in your industry?

Diversity is a strategic advantage for any business. Diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives, experiences, and problem-solving approaches. This will lead to more creative solutions, better products, and a greater ability to meet the needs of a diverse user base. When people from different backgrounds collaborate, they challenge each other's assumptions, identify blind spots, and push the boundaries of what's possible.

However, it is not enough to have a diverse workforce. I believe that organizations need to be striving towards Belonging. When people feel accepted, valued, and included as a member of a team or organization, they feel safe and that is when they bring their best ideas forward.

Belonging fuels innovation, drives creativity, and accelerates progress, leading to better outcomes for everyone.

You were recently recognized as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of Raleigh for 2024. Our readers would love to know the secret mantra behind your success.

Perseverance is the primary driver of my success. I set ambitious goals for myself, and I am deeply committed to achieving them, even when I’m faced with setbacks. I am no stranger to failure. However, I’ve learned that I’m resilient and can move forward in the midst of adversity. For example, Lebron James broke Kobe Bryant’s record for most missed shots in

the NBA. That’s one way to look at it. On the other hand, Lebron has also scored more points than anyone else in the history of the NBA. The lesson here is that your failures don’t define you or limit the heights your career can reach. I don’t let fear of failure stop me. I learn from the wins and the losses and move forward with the knowledge to make me better.

What leadership qualities and skills do you believe are essential for driving growth and transformation?

To drive growth and transformation, leaders need to have vision beyond what is currently possible; they must imagine an inspiring future and articulate it in clear, resonant ways. Their strategic thinking should span the ability to assess the current state, identify opportunities, and develop strategies that their teams can feasibly operationalize. Lastly, the most effective transformation leaders empower their talent to take ownership of implementing transformation initiatives. They trust their teams but remain involved by actively coaching and removing roadblocks to success.

How do you keep your mind healthy and stay resilient? And how do you motivate your team?

Self-awareness is the key to mental health and resilience. I’ve learned that understanding who I am and what I need is critical. Fortunately, I came of age as a leader during the popularity of Susan Cain’s “Quiet” which ushered in an era of accepting introverted leaders. I realized that it was possible to succeed as an introvert; this allowed me to embrace a leadership style and workplace boundaries that were not previously accepted.

Take time to learn the foundational methodologies but focus on gaining hands-on experience with planning and implementing change management initiatives

I also pay close attention to how my attention and energy shifts during different parts of the day, then optimize as much as possible for my natural rhythms of work cycles. For example, I do my best writing and strategy work in the morning when my mind is fresh. I try not to schedule meetings before 10am in order to give myself the space to think. I dedicate my afternoons to team meetings and collaboration sessions instead. And after leading or experiencing large, impactful changes, I take time off from work to recharge and reset mentally.

The most important ways that I motivate my team are by listening to what they need and building genuine connections with them. I create space to understand who they are and flex my leadership style to meet them where they need support. We discuss their passions, career goals, and development areas; we monitor progress and adjust plans throughout the year. We also collaborate to optimize their schedules to when and how they produce work most effectively, just like I do for myself. We are in this together; I extend to them the same respect and leadership that I would want to receive.

What is your favorite quote?

I don’t necessarily have a favorite quote, but I do have a favorite motivational speech. In the movie, Any Given Sunday, Al Pacino’s character (Coach Tony D’amato) delivers a speech to his

football players about how “life is a game of inches… and the inches we need are everywhere around us” in order to motivate them to overcome the challenges that they were facing on the field.

What always resonated with me was his passion and sense of urgency to take action in order to achieve your goals.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

AI is not going anywhere, and businesses are figuring out how to evolve with this technology.

So, I believe I will still be partnering with senior leaders to understand how they can more effectively plan and execute transformation initiatives. I also hope that I can continue to contribute towards the advancement of thought leadership and education about change management across industries.

What advice would you give aspiring change leaders?

Take time to learn the foundational methodologies but focus on gaining hands-on experience with planning and implementing change management initiatives. The most effective change leaders do not force change management frameworks on organizations. Instead, they understand the underlying principles then adapt their change strategies to the organizational culture to drive meaningful business outcomes.

in London. My MSc in Management Science deepened my interest in finance, but if I’m honest, it probably started much earlier,” Arésé reflects. Growing up in Berkshire, with her father working as a quant in investment banking and hedge funds, finance was woven into the fabric of her upbringing. “I think I was inspired to pursue a career in the industry by both my father and the environment at a science-based university in the heart of London,” she shares.

Arésé’s career began at Barclays on their graduate scheme, where she joined the Strategy team. Over the years, she has taken on a variety of roles within finance, but one constant has remained: her focus on the client. “The client

Milestones That Shaped the Journey Every new role in Arésé’s career has marked a significant milestone, each one sharpening her skills and expanding her perspective.

One pivotal moment was her transition from the Strategy team to Investor Relations at Barclays. “This positioned me well to develop my career in client-facing roles within both investment banking and a private equity fund,” Arésé shares. Her time at a private equity fund, where she successfully raised significant assets, became the foundation of her confidence and her enduring career.

Arésé’s journey began at Barclays, where she joined the firm’s graduate leadership scheme and worked alongside a diverse, multicultural team. Transitioning from investor relations to equity sales presented challenges, but Arésé embraced them with determination.

“It was a steep learning curve initially, but I saw it as a welcome challenge,” she recalls.

Her experience in investor relations, working for Barclays, seamlessly translated to her role

in equity sales, where she now specializes in analysing financials of companies like Barclays.

Overcoming challenges has been a recurring theme in Arésé’s career. “I overcame them the way I always do—by putting in the work and building the right relationships internally,” she notes. She credits her success to a relentless commitment to learning, spending hours reading and analysing to master the intricacies of each new role.

Leading with Empathy and Integrity Arésé believes that true leadership begins with empathy and leading by example. “People don’t listen to what you say as much as they follow what you do and remember how you made them feel,” she explains. By inspiring others, she strives to bring out the best in them— creating a win-win scenario for individuals and the organization.

She sets high standards and appeals to her team’s ambition. “If you’ve hired juniors with A-player potential, you can have confidence they’ll deliver,” Arésé shares. Drawing from stoic philosophy, she embraces a mindset of being strict with herself but tolerant with others.

“It’s a liberating and rewarding approach, both professionally and personally,” she adds.

Establishing a Strong Foundation for Success Early in her career, Arésé delivered significant profit growth in commercial and consumer card strategies, a role she took on as a young graduate in her early twenties. “It was a time of long hours and building a broad set of analytical skills,” she reflects. Mentored by a diligent leader she describes as “something of a legend,” Arésé learned invaluable lessons that shaped her professional ethos.

“The greatest career challenges often come at the start when the learning curve is steepest,” she notes. Arésé believes that a professional’s mindset, determination, and work ethic in those early years set the tone for their future success.

She is a strong advocate of a growth mindset, encouraging young professionals to set ambitious goals. “I genuinely believe we’re all capable of more than we realize,” Arésé says. In a competitive industry, she emphasizes the importance of resilience and learning from mistakes as key traits that set individuals apart.

One of her proudest achievements was leading the fundraise for PensionBee, a high-growth fintech company. As the sales deal captain, she witnessed the entire team at KBW and its parent company, Stifel, come together with a shared passion and commitment to delivering excellence for both the company and their institutional clients.

She is particularly optimistic about the potential revival of the IPO market, especially in London. "Part of what we do as an investment bank is work with management teams that want to raise money through listing their companies on a public market," Arésé shares. However, her enthusiasm is tempered by concerns about the declining prominence of the London Stock Exchange. While lobbying remains an important tool, she firmly believes in focusing on what can be controlled—delivering exceptional service to clients.

What was the inspiration behind establishing HRIC Executive Search?

What is its mission and vision?

HRIC Executive Search was born from a deeply personal journey. After becoming a mother, I couldn’t imagine being away from my little ones while navigating life as an immigrant without family support in Canada. This crucial moment inspired me to create something that allowed me to pursue my passion for recruitment while staying true to my values and priorities.

In 2009, HRIC Executive Search came to life—a boutique firm inspired by equality and talent, driven by the belief that leadership should reflect the diversity of the communities it serves. I often think in the Ocean, and the

whole diversity within those ecosystems, so we must go back to what is simple and embrace diversity. Witnessing the lack of representation in leadership roles, I envisioned a firm where every search would be guided by fairness and a commitment to transformative leadership.

Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?

I’m deeply grateful to my Dad and brothers, who have always supported me and shaped my approach to leadership in profound ways. They’ve shown me the importance of connecting authentically with people, trusting my instincts, acting with integrity, and keeping things simple.

My Dad was an extraordinary human being—a creative and humble leader who dedicated his life to making a difference in the lives of others. From him, I learned that true leadership is rooted in service and empathy.

In my work, recruitment is about so much more than placing candidates; it’s about transforming lives and impacting families. Every time I meet a candidate, I approach the conversation with an open heart, eager to understand their journey, motivations, and unique story. It’s these genuine connections that drive meaningful work and create opportunities that resonate far beyond the workplace.

What is your favorite quote?

What does the term "authentic leadership" mean to you?

Authentic leadership is about leading with integrity, empathy, and transparency. It’s recognizing the strength in vulnerability, earning trust, and backing up your values with consistent decisions and actions. Its having those difficult conversations with respect and being open to be vulnerable. For me, it’s about creating inclusive cultures where everyone feels

What are some of your passions outside of work? What do you like to do in your time off?

I love baking, cooking, and spending time in nature—activities that not only help me recharge but also inspire creativity and mindfulness. Hosting friends and family is one of my greatest joys, as it allows me to create meaningful connections and share moments of warmth and laughter.

I’m also pursuing a Master’s in Mindfulness, which aligns with my belief in self-awareness as a cornerstone of effective leadership. Above all, spending time with my children is my greatest source of happiness. Watching them grow and witnessing the amazing individuals they are becoming fills my heart with pride. My family is my anchor, my center and my constant source of strength, and the heart of everything I do.

What is your biggest goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

My biggest goal is to continue building on the impactful work we do at HRIC—work that reflects a commitment to equality, purpose, and transforming how organizations approach

leadership. HRIC has been more than just a professional endeavour; it’s a realization of my belief that leadership must be inclusive, thoughtful, and aligned with the values of those it serves.

In five years, I see HRIC becoming a globally recognized partner in executive search setting the standard for how diverse voices can redefine organizational excellence. Personally, I aim to expand my role as a mentor, guiding more women leaders to embrace their power and lead with authenticity. As Chief Administrative Officer, I have had the opportunity to shape the organization’s culture, foster diversity and inclusion, and make meaningful contributions to the banking industry. This role allows me the flexibility to learn new areas of banking including risk management. It enables me to develop outreach and, align business strategies with community outreach, and drive positive change both within the bank and the community. The ability to lead and support others, while also making a tangible difference, brings fulfillment and purpose to my work.

What role does technology play in enhancing administrative processes and improving customer experience?

Technology plays a transformative role in enhancing administrative processes and improving customer experience. Technology streamlines operational processes, increasing efficiency, and fostering better communication.

It can automate routine tasks, freeing up time for strategic work and reducing the risk of human error. On the customer experience side, banking is about relationships, and it is difficult to replace technology with people from that aspect. The enhancement of technology allows teams to work effectively and efficiently so our customers have access to real-time information with the ability to significantly boost customer satisfaction and loyalty. Technology ultimately enhances both internal operations and the overall experience for customers.

What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in your field? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe?

I firmly believe that organizations who can figure out diversity and inclusion will be successful. You remember that saying, “It

takes a village to raise a child” It also takes a village of diverse thoughts, ideas, creativity, and imagination to remain successful. The best way to obtain this atmosphere is to continue to invite this type of culture into the workplace.

You need to allow diverse ideas to be heard and place them in the right seat. I would call this providing psychological safety for employees.

Remaining authentic around this conversation is really the missing ingredient. Often diversity and inclusion become checkmarks, much like a to do list. When you have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers, that is where you get organizations walking the walk. They do not have to showcase their efforts in this area, the people, the communities, and the success will speak for itself. It is during those conversations where you share stories and life experiences that gets those leaders on your side of the table to see perspective through a different lens. I read a post on social media, and I thought it described this topic perfectly. I am a shoe person, so it resonated with me well.

It stated that diversity represented everyone getting a pair of shoes. Equity represented a person getting a pair of shoes that fit them.

Inclusion and belonging represented a person getting to where whatever shoes they liked.

You were recently recognized as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of Indiana for 2024. Our readers would love to know the secret mantra behind your success.

I feel extremely honored to receive that award.

This may sound cliché, but authenticity is the only secret. I am very authentic when it comes to my deep commitment to both people and purpose. My approach to leadership starts

with empathy, ensuring that individuals feel valued and empowered while also focusing on strategic growth and community impact. I have a keen ability to balance results-driven goals with a people-first mindset that allows me to build strong, inclusive teams and foster lasting relationships. Leaders must continue to grow personally and professionally.

Continuous learning is important to me, and I have dedicated myself to learn more Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?

I would not be here today without the personal support of my husband, D’Andre, and I’m extremely and truly grateful for him. He has always been the rock behind my career.

I believe there are people you need in life when it comes to your professional journey, a mentor is one of them. I’m grateful to have a mentor that has been instrumental in shaping my career. Robb Blume, the CEO of Community First Bank of Indiana, not only taught me the intricacies of banking, but he believed in my leadership capabilities. His encouragement and mentorship pushed me to keep learning, growing, and embracing new challenges. I am thankful for his unwavering support and guidance.

What is your favorite quote?

Authentic leadership for me means leading in a way that is true to my values, principles,

and experiences. It involves being genuine, transparent, and consistent in my actions and decisions, which helps build trust and strong relationships with those I lead. Given my role and community leadership, authenticity also involves demonstrating empathy, integrity, and deep commitment to supporting others’ growth, ensuring that my leadership style reflects who I am both personally and professionally. I enjoy leading by example, showing I care for those I work with and work for by creating an environment where people feel supported and valued, which encourages trust and collaboration.

What are some of your passions outside of work? What do you like to do in your time off?

I love sports, traveling with my entire family, and being a grandmother to my two-year-old granddaughter, Malia. My husband and I met in college and we both played basketball. Now, our oldest son, Dre Davis, plays basketball for Ole Miss and our youngest son, Tae Davis, plays basketball for Notre Dame. So, we travel to support them at their games. My parents supported me while I played so they have engrained that into our family culture. We have traveled all but a couple of states in the U.S. and we travel internationally to see different parts of the world. It was important for us to allow our kids and now granddaughter to see the world outside of our country so they can appreciate what they have. We have a large extended family; my parents usually always travel with us and my mother-in-law and siblings will join from time to time. There have been some memorable trips for sure.

What is your biggest goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I would say my biggest goal would be deepening my leadership impact, both within CFB and the broader community. I plan to spend a lot of my time learning more about the industry. In five years, I would like to see myself continuing to expand my influence as a strategic leader in banking, driving forward initiatives and innovation. I will aim to take on more prominent roles within the community, while continuing to mentor future leaders.

What advice do you have for professionals who are just starting out?

I would tell them to find a mentor who can guide them, share their experiences, and provide insights into navigating their career path. Learning from those who have been in your position can be invaluable. Always be open to learning, whether through formal education, professional development opportunities, or simply staying curious about their industry. Networking is key. Cultivate relationships with colleagues, industry peers, and community leaders. These connections can lead to new opportunities and provide support throughout their career. I would tell them to be authentic and stay true to their values and leadership styles. Authenticity builds trust and fosters relationships in the workplace. It is imperative to stay resilient. The journey may come with challenges and setbacks. Embrace these experiences as opportunities for growth and stay resilient in the face of adversity. The last piece of advice I would share is suggesting they get involved in their communities. Choose organizations that they can resonate with, it helps them grow personally and strengthen their professional network.

I’m fortunate that our Tambourine culture thrives on building diverse teams, encourages innovative solutions, enabling us to cater to varied customer needs, while acceptance and respect for different cultures, perspectives, and backgrounds pave the way for more impactful collaborations.

You were recently recognized as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders in Hospitality for 2024. Our readers would love to know the secret sauce behind your success.

Building strong relationships, is probably first and foremost, followed by results, and demonstrating the ability to blend deep expertise with vision, towards transforming operations, fostering innovation, and improving bottom-line performance. I also find that having a consultative approach and commitment to team collaboration has been beneficial.

In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way?

Two very impactful mentors have influenced my life and career. First was the late Tony Goldman, an entrepreneurial real estate developer, who was instrumental in the urban renewal of the architecturally significant South Beach, Florida. There are too many “Tony-isms” to mention that I rely on! I spent a decade working to revitalize and establish a hospitality and mixed-use

He would say, “The cash register is in the field!” I have never forgotten that and remind myself of this truism regularly.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

The advice to stay flexible and resilient, embrace new ideas, and always push for excellence- the best idea wins.

What’s a leadership lesson that you’ve learnt that’s unique to being a female leader?

The importance of balancing empathy with assertiveness. As women in leadership, we often face expectations around nurturing roles, but excelling in leadership involves combining that strength in relationship-building with decisiveness and confidence. If I could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out in the hospitality industry, it would be to prioritize building strong relationships— with guests, colleagues, and industry partners.

What we know is by excluding people in society for whatever reason, leaves much of the thought leadership unknown. By focusing on one particular group of individuals without taking the time and energy to make sure there is diversity, and inclusion means you will not get the best or most innovative answers. Not addressing equity means the same problem will present itself over and over leaving any initiatives of diversity and inclusion unsustainable.

Including everyone is the work context builds smarter and innovative workplaces which then reflects a feeling of belonging and contributing to society. These interlinks are well known and it is really important employers understand their role in this cycle.

In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way? What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

I have had the absolute privilege in being mentored by some truly amazing men and women over the years and I ensure I pay that forward whenever I can. The best piece of advice I had from my first true manager Dennis “be good to people, it makes it harder for them not to be good back”. In context Dennis was an ex-Union official, ex tradesperson from the north of England so had worked in some of the most challenging environments you could think of. He was an expert union negotiator and generally a beautiful person. He was a really good person, people knew that, so he earned a load of credibility and trust in his business relationships because of it.

What’s a leadership lesson that you’ve learnt that’s unique to being a female leader?

Being a female leader in largely male environments most of my career has taught me to find the commonality. Instead of being “different” I focused on being the same. I was the same as them, I am a person as well. I think normalising women being in leadership positions is a point we need to work on globally and highlighting equal treatment. We should equally ask men how they manage the juggle for example as a parent as much as we do women What is your biggest stress reliever?

Exercise and quiet time to think are my 2 go to stress relievers. I don’t not get a whole lot of time to myself so being able to combine those 2 things

I think resets my brain if I am feeling stuck or if I need to push myself into a new way of thinking What is your secret to striking a worklife balance?

Boundary setting is crucial to work life balance. Sitting down and setting manageable boundaries that you know you won’t break yourself is the key! Being explicit to others about how you balance your best work and when you are setting boundaries is also really important to lead by example, so your team does the same things for themselves Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I have a 7-year-old son so personally I see myself navigating his pre-teens with him. That’s quite scary to think about on its own! I am really confident I will be doing work I absolutely love and that is super interesting – probably deep in AI, and working with people who I have invested my team in over the years seeing them in senior roles also doing work that they know fulfils them One piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring professionals from your industry.

I think I would say to HR professionals keep learning. Be ahead of your business in professional and self-development and put your hand up to be at the table for every business innovation as it comes forward. Being involved on the ground floor even if it is over and above your day job will certainly forge you a path that will gain you professional success in the long run – as a business leader who happens to be extremely skilled in HR.

Hi Barbara. Please tell us about your background and areas of expertise.

A chance of a lifetime - After 8 months in my first job out of college, my boss at my medical publishing company in Washington, DC, came up to me and said, “Barbara, how would you like to move to Europe to open a sales office for us? I need a person on the ground to manage our large EMEA distributor network.” I jumped at the chance and moved to Amsterdam. I only had a phone and a desk and had to build the whole local

network, on my own. Two Rolex watches for top sales person of the year later, and after glamourous travel around the world, the company was sold. I went on to become a Global Account Manager for pharma for a very competitive and sometimes ruthless company and suffered a severe burnout with small children at home.

When I recovered, I decided not to go back into the corporate world. I took the jump to open my own executive speaker coaching company called Successful Speaker Now, to help

executives not be boring! I heard so many boring presentations and sales trainings over those years, that I wanted to do something about that. I have been a corporate coach and consultant for 14 years, working alone.

Over the years, I have developed my expertise in how to craft any presentation into an engaging experience, how to create stories that stick and will be remembered and how to deliver them with the greatest impact. I learned many skills like executive presence and visibility in my corporate coaching of Fortune 500 companies like Deloitte, ING and Microsoft. But I really polished my expertise by coaching more than 200 TEDx speakers in over 25 different TEDx events. I have been able to take the TEDx style of presenting and bring it to the corporate world to help these speakers not be boring and learn better ways to get their messages across.

What do you love the most about your current role?

What I love most about my role of Presentation Consultant and Coach is that I am like an artist that has been given a painted canvas, half completed. This refers to the speech content that needs more clarity and storytelling and the speaker who needs more polish and confidence.

I take the two and help build them up to create a memorable performance.

How do you tailor your coaching methodology to address the unique needs, style, and goals of each executive?

I am able to see how to help each individual bring his/her public speaking to a new level.

I have impacted so many lives by helping them learn to communicate their ideas with greater confidence and clarity. Some have become millionaires or leaders of industry. I feel that I have created a unique legacy for myself by helping others speak their truth and make a difference.

With regards to the challenges and goals of the executive speakers, we discuss these points at the beginning of the coaching process. Together, we list their three challenges and three goals for improving their public speaking, which I write down and track throughout the coaching sessions and make sure that when the program is completed all challenges are addressed and all goals reached.

What techniques do you employ to improve an executive's stage presence, confidence, and ability to handle challenging questions?

I use a variety of colorful tools to present well on stage or virtually. My popular book Boring to Brilliant! An Inspirational Guide for Speakers, gives 200+ tips on a variety of public speaking topics such as how to engage your audience, your voice as your best delivery tool.

It has been called by some, “The Speaker’s Bible”. I have created several strong templates that I share with my clients on different topics, such as how to build good content and how to respond to difficult Q&A questions and how to structure logical answers in an elegant way.

What are your thoughts on gender equality and inclusion? Do you think there is a gender bias in your industry?

I have met many solo-preneur coaches over the years and find that there are more women communication coaches then men. In my opinion, men position themselves more as consultants. However, I do see more women, like myself, moving in that direction as the title consultant seems to have more prestige and can charge higher fees than a coach. The topic of gender equality and inclusion have not been an issue or challenge for me, in my profession.

What is your favorite quote?

I have many quotes that inspire me, but here is one of my favorites: "It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up."

– Vince Lombardi What drives you? How do you measure personal success?

Being a solo-preneur has its ups and downs with cashflow challenges, client’s budget freezes and doing everything solo – but there are many advantages that I do enjoy. You must get up every time you are knocked down or have business fears dancing around your bed at night. Tomorrow is always a new day.

What is one accomplishment you’re proud of?

One accomplishment I am very proud of is, all the 200+ TEDx speakers I have had the honor to work with over the years in my coaching practice. They were visionaries, doctors, professors, scientists,

entrepreneurs, heads of state, youth, military officers, cabaret performers and most especially women; accomplished women who had a story to tell, startup entrepreneur women with a dream to pitch and every woman in between. Most speakers remember me fondly, as I remember them. Some say I have changed their lives, as I met them right at the moment they needed a push, a kick in the pants or a cheerleader before they reached a success milestone.

What drives you? How do you measure personal success?

To me, personal success is making a difference through the work you do, having a direct impact on someone to help them succeed in life and making a decent salary to live comfortably.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I hope to have been able to take all the knowledge and expertise I have gained over my coaching career - a sort of encyclopedia in my head - of presentation tips and tricks and create a library of products that I can share on a larger scale – and later end my career happily and at peace with what I have accomplished and the people I have touched.

One piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring professionals from your industry.

A word of advice to aspiring professional speaker coaches – each person has his/her own story to tell. You are there to build their confidence and help them craft the best messages you can and with the most colorful stories you can. It’s about helping them to shine and be their best.

Hi Yael. Please tell us about your background and areas of interest.

As a kid I wanted to be a fashion designer.

Growing up my passions have shifted, and I became aware of other areas of interest.

I was lucky to work as a student in sales and marketing roles and was very quickly promoted to sales management and training positions. This taught me that I like working with people leading teams and managing different projects. At the age of 25 I was appointed as a COO in a small company

managing many different projects and a team of 50 sales agents project managers and it was the best opportunity for me to grow as a leader. Yet my passion for fashion stayed in the background and when I was 28 years old I started a fashion technology startup with a partner. While that venture did not grow as expected it led me to start a community for fashion and retail tech startups which later evolved into the Re:Tech innovation hub which was the first retail innovation hub in Israel.

You are an CMO at buywith - Can you please tell us about this organization and your role in it? buywith is a video commerce platform working with brands and retailers to transform their e-commerce into a dynamic and engaging video experience. We work with the world's leading retailers and brands and help them create engaging video commerce experiences at scale. As the CMO I am in charge of the brand strategy and any marketing related activities as well as strategic partnerships and business development.

What do you love the most about your current role?

What I love most in my current role is how dynamic it is. Working in the small startup enables me to touch on many different aspects of the business and manage a dynamic schedule were everyday it's very different than the previous day. I get to work with amazing clients with the very talented team and to be part of a truly innovative solution that is making our real impact on the retail industry.

Can you tell us about Re:Tech? What is its mission and vision?

Re:Tech started as a community for retail technology startups. Today it is a global community and innovation hub with a vibrant network of senior retail executives from all over the world as well as the top retail technologies and innovators. We run industry events around AI in retail, the future of customer experience, innovation in logistics and supply chain, and many other topics that are at the core of the industry.

How do you approach the everchanging landscape of digital marketing and emerging technologies such as AI? Based in Israel, I am lucky to be at the heart of one of the world's top technology AI hubs.

As I've been active in the ecosystem for many years, I am lucky to have a wide network of connections with VC's, hubs, accelerators, innovation labs and sister communities and I'm often being introduced and referred to the latest early stage technologies. This is how I

get to know those breaking technologies from their early inception. On top of that I am also a regular speaker at industry events such as ShopTalk, Re:Tech Disrupt, and others which helps me keep up with the latest trends and innovations in the industry.

What are your thoughts on gender equality and inclusion? Do you think there is a gender bias in your industry?

still only 2% of VC funding is invested in women led startups. In the retail industry, which is more accessible and loved by women, I do see a relatively higher number of women founders, which is a bit encouraging, yet this number is still much lower than men founders and they are still finding it more difficult to raise funds which ultimately affects their success potential.

Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?

I have many people to be thankful for – starting with my first CEO who saw my potential and promoted ne to be his COO at the age of 25. He was the one who taught me all about P&Ls, ROI and in general how a business is operated. I’m also very grateful to my partners over the years – on both my first startup and at Re:Tech – a good partner is everything, and I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without their support.

I had many mentors and friends over the years who have offered me their advice and support.

And finally, my partner in life, whose support, patience, guidance and partnership helped me push beyond my boundaries and continue exploring new challenges and opportunities.

What does the term "authentic leadership" mean to you?

I have always led by example. I don't think people like to do what they are told and and they especially don't like to be told what to do by a leader who does not follow his own guidance. I developed my leadership skills when I was serving in the army as a 19 year old young officer in the IDF logistic force.

I had to command soldiers who were older than me, more experienced than me, and

there was no way they would listen to me just because I told them to do something. No one taught me how to lead these soldiers but my internal instinct let me to lead by example, to always be the first in the field and to treat my soldiers as equals. This is how together, as a team, we were able to conquer challenges in one of the toughest environments. It was only natural for me to take these learnings and implement them throughout the rest of my career.

What are some of your passions outside of work? What do you like to do in your time off?

Outside of work I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family my husband our three beautiful kids and are expanded families.

What is your biggest goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

In five years from now I still see myself pioneering and leading retail innovation collaborating with the with the world's biggest retailers and brands to drive innovation and make a true impact on the industry.

What advice would you give to somebody who is considering entering your field?

The retail industry is one of the most challenging ones do you to low margins, complex processes and traditional legacy platforms. It is therefore one of the hardest industries to penetrate and to implement innovation. Yet if this is the industry that you're passionate about make sure to find mentors to teach you about the industry and help you find sweet spots where you can make a difference.
