Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Tournament Champion - Barton
This is truly a special weekend for Conference Carolinas! Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is one of the top facilities in all of college basketball and holding our men’s and women’s basketball championships here allows us to showcase our top-notch student-athletes at a high level. We are excited to be back for our 2023 Basketball Championships.
We are also thrilled to officially welcome Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company as our partner for our men’s and women’s basketball championships and spirit championships this year. In addition, our tournament is not possible without the efforts of OneSpartanburg, Inc. Both Atlantic Casualty and OneSpartanburg, Inc. have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this year’s championships a reality.
We are excited that this year’s championships continues what has become a tradition in the league with our basketball championships having an official home at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Assistant AD/Building Manager Byron Rucker in particular has worked incredibly hard to make these events happen. I also truly appreciate Director of Athletics Richard Johnson and everyone associated with Wofford College for allowing us to utilize the facility for years to come!
We hope everyone enjoys the tremendous basketball on display in Spartanburg. Please also take the time to check out all of the great things happening in Conference Carolinas by visiting ConferenceCarolinas.com.

JERRY RICHARDSON INDOOR STADIUM
Wofford College announced on Nov. 17, 2014 its plans to build the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium to house a new basketball/volleyball arena, locker rooms and other facilities. The facility is adjacent to the north end of Gibbs Stadium, where the Terriers play football.
Wofford alumnus and trustee Jerry Richardson ‘59 provided the gift to fund the 110,000square-foot facility that includes a 3,300-seat basketball arena and a 350-seat volleyball competition venue. The facility replaces Benjamin Johnson Arena, which will continue to be used as a first-rate facility for intramural and campus recreational activities.
The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium has a seating capacity for non-athletics functions, such as commencement and concerts, of 4,500. It includes home and visitor lockers for multiple sports, a state-of-the-art training room, coaches’ offices and locker rooms and team meeting rooms. Other features include a video board and ribbon boards, plus designated areas specifically designed for students, fans, children and donors. Four open-air suites are located in the corners.

HISTORY OF CONFERENCE CAROLINAS
Conference Carolinas was formed as an athletic association “for the greater advantage of the small colleges in North Carolina” in 1930.
The official name given back then was the North State Intercollegiate Conference, but it was known informally as the Old North State Conference.
The birthplace on December 6, 1930 was the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, North Carolina and the seven charter and founding members were Appalachian State, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Catawba, Guilford, Elon, High Point, and Lenoir-Rhyne.
Conference Carolinas officially celebrated its 90th birthday on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020.

The 2023 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships will mark the third time that the championships have been held at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships will continue to be held on the Wofford College campus through the 2026-27 academic year.
The 2020 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships were able to be held just before the COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately closed out the 2019-20 academic year.
“We are forever thankful that we were able to host our Basketball Championships in 2020,” Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “It was just a few short days later that the world changed completely for all of us. Our member institutions did a fantastic job hosting our 2021 Basketball Championships at campus sites, but we believe that Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium provides our member institutions with a truly first-class experience.”
The 2020 and 2022 Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships were special for Conference Carolinas men’s and women’s basketball, and Colvin knows that returning to Wofford for the next five years continues to only enhance the tremendous brand of basketball in the league.
“We are excited to know that we are at Wofford College for our next five Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company Conference Carolinas Basketball Championships. It truly is a thrilling time to be associated with Conference Carolinas basketball,” Colvin continued.
The 2023 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will mirror the 2022 championships with six teams in men’s and women’s basketball advancing to Spartanburg.
The Championships will get underway on Sunday, Feb. 26 and Monday, Feb. 27. The fifth and sixth seeds in men’s and women’s basketball will play host to two games over the two days. The 10th-seeded team will battle the seventh-seeded team on Feb. 26 at the home of the sixth seed for the right to face the sixth seed on Feb. 27, while the ninth-seeded team will take on the eighth-seeded team at the home of the fifth seed on Feb. 26 for the chance to take on the fifth seed on Feb. 27.
CONFERENCE CAROLINAS & WOFFORD
Carolinas is thrilled to return to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on the campus of Wofford College for its 2023 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.
