MAKING HISTORY

North Greenville baseball made history when it won its first-ever national championship at the 2022 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. The Crusaders went 4-0 in Cary in their first-ever trip to the national championship and they are the second Conference Carolinas baseball team to win the title, joining Mount Olive who accomplished the feat in 2008. It’s the first national team championship in any sport for Conference Carolinas since Limestone won the 2017 NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse national championship.

DEVELOPING LEADERS Conference Carolinas was featured in the December 2021 edition of Athletics Administration.

The publication is the official publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Athletics Administration is circulated four times annually to all two- and four-year colleges and universities in both in the United States and Canada. It is written primarily by NACDA members for NACDA members.

The December 2021 edition of Athletics Administration includes Conference Carolinas on the cover and describes how the conference believes in the development and formation of the whole person in Body, Mind, and Soul.

The special edition of Athletics Administration also discusses how the conference under the direction of Chris Colvin implements this approach to help their member institutions fulfill their missions on campus along with much more.

STRATEGIC PLAN Conference Carolinas has officially unveiled its new strategic plan.

The Conference Carolinas Strategic Plan is fully built around the belief that building “Champions in Body, Mind, and Soul” in Conference Carolinas is not just a slogan; it’s what Conference Carolinas sets out to accomplish every day.

“Champions in Body, Mind, and Soul” is about the development of the whole student-athlete. Playing sports isn’t just about winning on the scoreboard but about winning in life. That requires a commitment to excellence in all aspects of the experience, which is what is done in Conference Carolinas.

The new strategic plan is built around the following priorities: • • • • •

Actualization of Champions in Body, Mind, and Soul.

Culture of Care, Compassion, and Integrity.

Membership and Financial Stability.

Championships and Game-Day Experience.

Marketing, Branding, and Strategic Communications.

These particular priorities intentionally embody Conference Carolinas’ vision to be “Champions in Body, Mind, and Soul” and its commitment to attain excellence and virtue in all that the conference does each and every day.

PROVIDING UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES Conference Carolinas through the tireless efforts of Assistant Commissioner/SWA Jill Robbins started a mentorship program where coaches and administrators throughout the conference would be paired with aspiring professionals in the sports industry.

The program continued into the 2021-22 academic year with the hopes that the utilization of technology on Zoom could also be paired with in-person meetings where applicable. The program even led to mentor, and former Director of Athletics Communications at Mount Olive, Ryan Smith, hiring his 2020-21 mentee on to his athletics communications staff as an Assistant Director during the 2021-22 academic year.

Conference Carolinas also started a Professional Development Series last year that has continued into the 2021-22 academic year on Zoom. The series has allowed Conference Carolinas to connect with its student-athletes and member institutions on varying topics such as transitioning from being a student-athlete and how to prepare for graduate school.

The completely free Professional Development Series has also given Conference Carolinas student-athletes the opportunity to hear from professionals in all areas of the sports industry with special speakers included in each seminar on Zoom.

All of this was also being done in conjunction with oncampus Leadership programming being performed over the course of the 2021-22 academic year by Robbins. Associate Commissioner Kit Alewine joined Robbins on each of the campus visits where he held NCAA compliance reviews with each member institution while they were on campus.

In its continuing efforts to provide even more unique opportunities for its coaches and administrators, Conference Carolinas also kicked off its inaugural Coaches Academy in the 2021-22 academic year.

The three-session Conference Carolinas Coaches Academy was a program that allowed head and assistant coaches in the conference to gain valuable knowledge that could enhance their work individually and as a team. The program was funded through a joint effort between Conference Carolinas and its member institutions and was free to coaches in the conference.

The Coaches Academy is being run in cooperation with Dr. Drew Brannon and the team at AMPLOS. They are serving the coaches in Conference Carolinas through a truly holistic approach that can help with wellbeing and finding peak performance.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Conference Carolinas had one team and three individual/ event national champions in the 2021-22 academic year.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS AND MOUNT OLIVE NAMED FINALISTS FOR DIVISION II AWARD OF EXCELLENCE The Conference Carolinas league office and the University of Mount Olive were named finalists for the 2022 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence.

In total, 26 schools and two conferences were named finalists. The accolade recognizes initiatives in the past year that exemplify the Division II philosophy, community engagement, and student-athlete leadership. Six finalists were picked as at-large honorees for submitting a strong nomination that was not chosen as the finalist in their conference.

The Conference Carolinas office was the official nominee from the conference for its Sport Administration Mentor Program, while Mount Olive was an at-large finalist for the men’s and women’s track & field efforts with their annual cleanup day.

Launched in 2021, the Conference Carolinas’ Sport Administration Mentor Program connects upperclassmen student-athletes interested in an athletic administration career with a mentor for the academic year. Throughout the academic year, the mentee and mentor network and discuss their field of interest. Mentees also meet with one another.

Mount Olive men’s and women’s track & field student-athletes collected 200 bags of trash from around town and worked together to connect with the community as part of their annual cleanup day.

Division II honors its members each year for conducting events that promote student-athletes giving back and serving as leaders within their communities or on their campuses. A committee of athletics administrators determined this year’s finalists, and the national Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee selected the winner.

Last year, Belmont Abbey was named the national runner-up for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. Belmont Abbey received second-place honors for its Mr. Crusader Pageant where Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members planned, organized and produced the annual event.

The pageant is Belmont Abbey’s largest fundraiser and community engagement event. The student-athletes in the pageant participate in a multitude of events and the audience votes for their favorite student-athlete by donating money to Make-A-Wish. Avery Wilson, a Make-AWish recipient who participates each year as a judge, was celebrated for beating cancer.

Belmont Abbey was one of two finalists last year from Conference Carolinas for the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence with Converse chosen as one of the six at-large representatives.

Converse was chosen as a finalist for its Virtual Nursing Home Visit Video. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals in nursing homes were unable to have visitors. In response to this, Converse student-athletes, coaches and administrators created a video to connect with residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The videos were shared with 25 nursing homes and impacted the lives of many residents.

CONTINUING TO TELL THE CONFERENCE CAROLINAS STORY For Conference Carolinas it’s all about telling our story uniquely. Others are taking notice too with NCAA Division II recently awarding Conference Carolinas a grant based on its strategic positioning as a conference in promoting its student-athletes, coaches, and administrators through its CoSIDA award-winning “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature series.

The Division II Planning and Finance Committee officially awarded Conference Carolinas the $2,000 grant on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, to acknowledge its “Feature Writer for Conference Website” strategy in the “Membership and Positioning Initiatives” strategic positioning outcome area.

The Conference Carolinas “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature series was named the national runner-up in one category and was also honored with “Best in the District” honors in CoSIDA’s annual Fred Stabley Jr. Writing Contest in the 2021-22 academic year.

Conference Carolinas was awarded the honor for national runner-up for a feature on King 1,000-point scorer and NASA intern Trinity Lee. The special feature was tabbed national runner-up in the “Social Justice/Diversity & Inclusion” category.

In addition to earning national runner-up accolades, the story on Lee was also honored with “Best in the District” honors. Two more stories also received runner-up honors for “Best in the District” in a feature on Emmanuel swimming All-American Natalie Hayes in the “Athlete Profile” category and a special feature on Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin in the “Coach/Administrator Profile” category.

Conference Carolinas has now won “Best in the District” honors for two consecutive years with Conference Carolinas claiming best in District 3 last year also for its profile on Michael Neustifter of North Greenville.

The “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature series is a collaboration between public relations legend Bob Rose and Assistant Commissioner for External Relations Brian Hand.

Rose and Hand work with the entire Conference Carolinas office and its member institutions to help tell the stories. Rose is a longtime sports public relations executive who has worked for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, the NFL Cardinals, Cal, Stanford and other organizations.

The series of “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature stories have led to local, regional and national coverage with Neustifter even featured by Sports Illustrated after the release of the “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature. Neustifter was also profiled on Perfect Game College Baseball on MLB Network on radio and on WYFF and WLOS.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS EXTENDS COLLABORATION WITH SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE Conference Carolinas and the South Atlantic Conference are extending their collaboration into women’s triathlon and women’s wrestling.

The two conferences have combined to administer men’s wrestling and field hockey since the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

The addition of women’s triathlon and women’s wrestling also comes with the announcement that the South Atlantic Conference will be the sole sponsor of field hockey starting in the 202223 academic year. The two conferences will still administer men’s wrestling together until the start of the 2023-24 academic year when both conferences will then solely sponsor the sport.

“We are really excited about the addition of working with the SAC to administer the NCAA emerging sports of women’s triathlon and women’s wrestling,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “I know both the Conference Carolinas and South Atlantic Conference student-athletes are thrilled to be able to compete against each other in a conference format that also allows us to help lead the way nationally in promoting the growth of these two sports.”

The two conferences will start women’s triathlon in the 2022-23 academic year, while women’s wrestling will begin in the 2023-24 academic year.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue our partnership with Conference Carolinas,” South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz said. “To be one of the first conferences to sponsor both women’s wrestling and women’s triathlon is an honor and a privilege. We are excited to help these two emerging sports grow and provide meaningful, competitive championships for the student-athletes in both the SAC and Conference Carolinas.”

The Conference Carolinas member institutions competing in women’s triathlon are Emmanuel and King. The South Atlantic Conference will be represented by Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry and Wingate.

The Conference Carolinas member institutions competing in the women’s wrestling collaboration are Emmanuel, King and Mount Olive, while Emory & Henry, Limestone and Lincoln Memorial will represent the SAC.

‘A BETTER WE FORWARD’ - CONFERENCE CAROLINAS HOLDS SPECIAL DIVERSITY & INCLUSION TRAINING SESSION Conference Carolinas held a special training session entitled “A Better We Forward” on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the league office in conjunction with its Diversity & Inclusion Team.

The diversity and inclusion training session was hosted by Barton Assistant AD for Facilities and Event Management and Coordinator of Student Equity Dexter Harris.

“It’s incredibly important in Conference Carolinas that we collaborate to better understand each other on our campuses and beyond,” Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “It’s an emphasis in our conference that we work together in this way, and I applaud Assistant Commissioner/SWA Jill Robbins setting this up with Dexter Harris to provide our member institutions these types of opportunities.”

The session on Jan. 15 was the first of two opportunities with the second session held on Jan. 30 at Barton. The sessions include what it means to understand the “I” in inclusion and a round table discussion along with much more.

The unique sessions are available to Conference Carolinas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Presidents and Vice Presidents, all involved in the Conference Carolinas Diversity & Inclusion Team and coaches of select student-athletes in the conference.

CONVERSE, SOUTHERN WESLEYAN EARN PRESIDENTS’ AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence is awarded to Division II schools that have achieved an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90% or higher. This year, 43 member schools earned the honor, including Southern Wesleyan and Converse from Conference Carolinas.

Southern Wesleyan posted an ASR of 91% while Converse came in at 90%. Both institutions earned the honor for a second straight year.

“It is an honor recognizing 43 schools for this prestigious award,” said Steven Shirley, president of Minot State and chair of the Division II Presidents Council. “I applaud these schools and student-athletes for their hard work, commitment and dedication to achieving academic excellence.”

The Division II ASR includes transfers into a school in the calculation and removes transfers out who left school while academically eligible. The ASR also includes the more than 31,000 non-scholarship student-athletes who were enrolled in the four years covered in the most recent data.

Even when using the less-inclusive federal graduation rates, student-athletes are outperforming their peers in the general student population by 8%. For Division II athletes, the federal rate increased 1 percentage point to 60%, and the general student body increased 1 point to 52%.

This is the 11th year the award has been given.

DR. BRENDA CATES OF MOUNT OLIVE NAMED RECIPIENT OF PRESTIGIOUS DR. DAVE PARISER FACULTY MENTOR AWARD The NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee selected Brenda Cates from the University of Mount Olive as the winner of the 2021 Dr. Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award.

“This is a really big deal,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “There is only one recipient each year and I cannot think of anyone more fitting for this honor than Dr. Cates.

She truly embodies everything we stand for in Conference Carolinas and she has been a huge asset to us in the conference office in so many different ways. On behalf of everyone in Conference Carolinas, I want to congratulate Dr. Cates, but more importantly, thank her for her commitment to the University of Mount Olive, Conference Carolinas and NCAA Division II.” Cates, a math professor at Mount Olive who has served as the school’s Faculty Athletics Representative since 2003, was selected for her consistent and passionate devotion to student-athlete excellence in the classroom and her advocacy on behalf of student-athletes on campus and within the Division II governance structure.

“Dr. Cates truly embodies the spirit of Division II,” said Kate Pigsley, Chair of the Division II SAAC Honors, Awards and Recognition Subcommittee and SAAC’s Northeast-10 Conference representative. “She embraces the balanced approach to the student-athlete experience we all believe in and has consistently focused her efforts on ensuring that student-athletes get the most from their college experience, particularly in academics but also in achieving their goals in athletics and in their other extracurricular pursuits.”

The Dr. Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award is named after a Bellarmine physical therapy professor who died in 2013. It recognizes faculty members at Division II schools for their dedication to supporting and mentoring student-athletes, as well as their commitment to Division II student-athletes’ lifelong learning, competition and well-being.

Cates will receive the award at the Division II Faculty Mentor Award presentation and reception during the 2022 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis. Joan Davison of Rollins, who received the award in 2020 but was not recognized in person because the 2021 Convention was held virtually, will also be honored during the reception.

Cates is well known for keeping lines of communication open between coaches and faculty members at Mount Olive, and she provides academic support to student-athletes who may need additional attention while also developing recognition programs for student-athletes who are excelling in the classroom.

In addition, Cates keeps the athletics department abreast of NCAA rules changes and helps determine student-athlete eligibility. Cates has represented Mount Olive and Conference Carolinas on several NCAA Division II committees, including the Academic Requirements Committee, Legislation Committee and the Management Council, on which she is currently serving a second term.

Cates also has the unique responsibility of serving as scorekeeper at men’s and women’s basketball home games. Jill Robbins, Conference Carolinas’ Assistant commissioner and Senior Woman Administrator in the Conference Carolinas office who nominated Cates for the award, noted how reassuring it was to have a math professor fulfill that role.

In 2019, Cates was named the NCAA Division II Faculty Athletics Representatives Association FAR of the Year, and in 2021, Cates earned Mount Olive’s Dr. Thomas R. Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching.

“I can’t overstate what it means to me to be honored by the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with this award,” Cates said upon being informed of the recognition. “I’ve always believed in helping student-athletes maximize their potential and blossom into leaders who will have a positive impact on our society, so to be recognized by such an influential group of student-athletes for my passion in this regard is truly humbling and rewarding.”

COMMISSIONER COLVIN APPOINTED TO NCAA DIVISION IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin was appointed to the Division II Implementation Committee. The Implementation Committee is charged with leading the division’s work following the Association-wide vote on a new constitution in January.

“I am honored to represent our conference and our member institutions on the Implementation Committee,” Colvin said. “This is truly a historic time in the history of the NCAA, and I know this committee will collaborate effectively to navigate carefully through the new constitution and how it will affect and benefit the Division II member institutions and its 23 conferences.”

The Division II Implementation committee, co-chaired by Wisconsin-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford and Delta State President William LaForge, will review the division’s rules and policies and make recommendations to ensure that changes are consistent with the principles agreed upon in the new constitution.

The committee comprises 28 voting members: one representative from all 23 Division II conferences and five current and former student-athletes. Former California University of Pennsylvania volleyball player Madeleine McKenna, a member of the Constitution Committee, will be one of those student-athlete representatives. The other four will be Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members and will be determined at the 2022 NCAA Convention in January.

The Implementation Committee began meeting in January and they provide regular updates to the Division II Management and Presidents Councils. Any recommendations from the Implementation Committee will follow the current Division II governance structure, legislation and policies.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS CONTINUES TO SHINE IN LATEST ACADEMIC SUCCESS RATES RELEASED BY NCAA DIVISION II Conference Carolinas owns an impressive rate of 75 percent in the latest Academic Success Rates released by NCAA Division II. Division II graduation rates increased to 76 percent overall, which is a 2-point increase from last year’s rate, according to the most recent Academic Success Rate data.

In total, Conference Carolinas had 3,151 of 4,196 (75 percent) graduate in the latest Academic Success Rates released by NCAA Division II (2011-2014 freshman cohorts).

“This latest ASR percentage for Conference Carolinas continues to speak volumes about the hard work and efforts being done behind the scenes and in the classroom by our member institutions,” Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “It’s obviously a point of pride in Conference Carolinas that we work to build champions in body, mind and soul. This is just another significant example that clearly demonstrates that our institutions value having their student-athletes be successful not only in NCAA competition and in the community but also in the classroom.”

GROWING DAILY

The commitment to complementing its members for Conference Carolinas can easily be seen in the fact that the conference has improved its Instagram followers by almost 6,500 in the last almost three years (July 2019-May 2022). The increase, which also includes adding almost 1,500 followers since August of 2021 thanks to the addition of Assistant Commissioner for Communications Zachary Shore, is the most among all of NCAA Division II conferences during the time period.

In addition, Conference Carolinas has improved by almost 3,000 Twitter followers during the same time period, which is the second-most among all NCAA Division II conferences.

Conference Carolinas has also set record numbers on ConferenceCarolinas.com for the last three academic years with the official website for the league registering well over one million pageviews during the first 10 months of the 2021-22 academic year.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS HOLDS INAUGURAL DEVELOPMENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2021-22 Conference Carolinas announced the addition of four inaugural Developmental Championships in the 2021-22 academic year. The unique plan was launched to help our member institutions fulfil their missions by adding these Developmental Championships.

Some may call it JV or sub-varsity, but the term “Developmental” seems to capture the role of these programs the best. These developmental programs provide significant opportunities for additional student-athletes to compete and fine-tune their skills. With these championships, Conference Carolinas wanted to create a dynamic that provided student-athletes competing at the developmental level with a championship experience.

The plan was to conduct a Developmental Championship in any sport in which at least four institutions declared an intent to participate. Using that guideline, which was recently formally added to the Conference Carolinas bylaws, Conference Carolinas sponsored Developmental Championships in four sports during the 2021-22 academic year: men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and baseball.

The Soccer Developmental Championships were held on one day in the same city at two separate venues and featured four teams each.

Ten institutions participated in the Men’s Basketball Developmental Championship, which was split into two brackets. Each bracket was played on one day and the winners of the two brackets met the following week for the championship.

Five institutions participated in the Baseball Developmental Championship, which was structured similar to basketball with two site winners advancing to a single championship the following week.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS HONORS MILESTONE AND LEGENDS AWARD WINNERS Conference Carolinas honored its latest Milestone and Legends award winners as part of its annual awards ceremony on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the Spartanburg Marriott.

The Milestone and Legends awards are presented to deserving coaches and administrators that have made a long-standing impact within Conference Carolinas.

Conference Carolinas presented two Legends awards and four Milestone awards at its annual awards ceremony that was held in person for the first time since 2018-19.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF TITLE IX Conference Carolinas joined with all of the NCAA on Thursday, June 23, 2022, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Conference Carolinas is proud to celebrate the 37 words authored by United States Senator Birch Bayh on June 23, 1972 that have sustained an impressive legacy.

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

These powerful words from the landmark statute have led to unprecedented growth for opportunities in women’s sports over the last 50 years.

Over the course of the 2022-23 academic year, Conference Carolinas is going to highlight how Title IX has changed the conference for the better and how the league continues to lead the way in offering championship opportunities in women’s athletics.

Conference Carolinas will utilize its “Body, Mind, and Soul” feature series along with other avenues on social media and in video on ConferenceCarolinas.com to highlight the past, present and future of Title IX in the conference.

D2CCA OFFICIALLY HONORS DR. PATTERSON WITH AWARD OF MERIT The Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) officially awarded Dr. Alan Patterson, former Conference Carolinas Commissioner, the 2021 D2CCA Award of Merit.

Patterson was notified that he would receive the award in the summer of 2021, but he was honored in person at the Award of Merit reception as part of the 2022 D2CCA summer meetings on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

In addition, the D2CCA also recognized the 2020 Award of Merit recipient, Dr. Jerry McGee of Wingate.

“The D2CCA is proud to recognize former colleague Dr. Alan Patterson as the recipient of the 2021 Award of Merit,” stated Great Midwest Athletic Conference Commissioner and D2CCA President Tom Daeger. “Dr. Patterson contributed significantly to Division II in his over 30 years of service as Commissioner of Conference Carolinas. Dr. Patterson, who led Conference Carolinas from NAIA to NCAA Division II membership, was vocal in focusing the Division’s efforts on supporting studentathletes and driving consideration of the supporting role athletics plays in developing their educational experience. A long-time treasurer of the D2CCA, Dr. Patterson served as a steady presence and trusted mentor to many Commissioners during his time with the organization.”

Patterson began his career part-time as the Conference Carolinas Commissioner back in 1982, marking his tenure the longest in Conference Carolinas history following his retirement in 2019. During his early part-time Commissioner years, he was also employed as head of the physical education department at High Point University. Following that, while still in a dual role, he served as Athletics Director at Catawba College until 1989 before starting his own real estate investment business. His role as conference Commissioner did not become full-time until 1995 when Conference Carolinas transitioned from NAIA to Division II. Throughout Patterson’s 37 years as Commissioner, he saw numerous member school changes and also oversaw the sponsored championships increase from 14 to 23 sports.

In his honor, the top award given in Conference Carolinas was named the Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup, which goes on to measure athletic and academic achievements. This award is the ultimate comprehensive conference award that recognizes the member institution with the best average ranking when combining the Hawn Cup, the Allan Sharp Award and the Messick Award.

In addition to his role at Conference Carolinas, Patterson also served as the D2CCA Treasurer for nearly two decades before he retired. In this role, he led the financial health of the Association and used his decision-making process for the betterment of the Division II members. Patterson was also involved at the national level with his service on the NCAA’s Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct and the Playing Rules Oversight Panel.

The Award of Merit is the highest honor presented by the D2CCA and is reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the entire NCAA Division II membership and the Division II student-athlete experience.

CONFERENCE CAROLINAS ADDS WINGATE AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER IN ACROBATICS & TUMBLING Conference Carolinas has officially announced the addition of Wingate as an Associate Member in acrobatics & tumbling.

“We are excited to unveil that Wingate has continued to help us lead the way and grow the amazing sport of acrobatics & tumbling,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said.

“We are truly thankful that they have accepted our invitation to join our conference as an Associate Member. Wingate gives us another strong institution working with Conference Carolinas while also giving us the opportunity to continue to extend the acrobatics & tumbling footprint.”

Wingate will begin its inaugural season and its first year of competition in Conference Carolinas in the 2023-24 academic year.

“We are excited to have Wingate acrobatics and tumbling competing in Conference Carolinas,” Wingate Director of Athletics Kelley Kish said. “The footprint of the conference teams and competitive level is a perfect fit as we start our program. Wingate acrobatics and tumbling student-athletes will take pride in representing our institution in fall of 2023 as part of Conference Carolinas.”

Conference Carolinas will have nine programs competing in acrobatics and tumbling in the 2022-23 academic year in Belmont Abbey, Chowan, Coker, Converse, Emmanuel, King, Lander, Limestone and Mars Hill.

Conference Carolinas acrobatics & tumbling will feature 11 teams in the 2023-24 academic year with Erskine relaunching its program along with the addition of Wingate.

Conference Carolinas just recently concluded its second season of acrobatics & tumbling in the 2021-22 academic year.

Four Conference Carolinas teams were nationally ranked among the top 15 over the course of the 2022 spring season with Limestone and Converse both advancing to the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) National Championship field. In addition, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Lander all had at-large qualifying scores for the national event finals.

Conference Carolinas acrobatics & tumbling captured its first-ever national championships at the national event finals inside Matthew Knight Arena at the University of Oregon. Converse collected the national championship in the six element in the acro event, while Limestone picked up the national title in the open heat in the pyramid event.

Conference Carolinas is a sole sponsor of 23 sports and collaborates with two other conferences to offer opportunities in four additional sports for a total of 27. The conference will be the sole sponsor of 24 sports (28 total including collaborations with other conferences) beginning in 2023-24.

The ability to provide its membership sports sponsorship in 28 sports is the most in all of NCAA Division II. In addition, Conference Carolinas also provides championship opportunities for its member institutions in Esports and Spirit.

This is all in addition to adding Developmental Championships for its member institutions during the 2021-22 academic year. Conference Carolinas is believed to be the first NCAA conference to offer sub-varsity championships to its members.

Conference Carolinas and the Mountain East Conference are the only NCAA conferences to presently sponsor the sport of acrobatics & tumbling.

UNC PEMBROKE WINS NACMA UNITY AWARD The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) recognized UNC Pembroke for its efforts in creating a marketing campaign or initiative that was associated with diversity and inclusion. UNC Pembroke was chosen the winner of the inaugural NACMA Unity Award for its efforts.

UNC Pembroke earned the prestigious honor for its “Never Walk Alone Day” at its basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 12. The doubleheader showcased a sense of unity among the student body, administrators, and supporters on UNC Pembroke’s campus. UNCP Athletics strives to empower the voices of all involved so that everyone is a part of the discussion. UNC Pembroke notes that as a member of #BraveNation, no matter your background, you will never walk alone, and your voices are being heard.

BARTON CHOSEN AS INAUGURAL CONFERENCE CAROLINAS ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF OF THE YEAR Barton athletic training has been chosen by its peers as the inaugural Conference Carolinas Athletic Training Staff of the Year.

Led by Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine Ginna Lewis, the 2021-22 Barton athletic training staff was composed of Evan Abatiell, Kaitlin Ricklefs, Francesca Harvey, Jordyn Lopez, Alex Miller, Tomomi Nishihara, and Rebecca Speight.

Barton’s athletic training staff is charged with providing support to 23 varsity sports and multiple Developmental programs.

“The Barton athletic training staff has worked tirelessly over the course of the 2021-22 academic year to provide tremendous daily support to the Barton student-athletes,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “In addition to Barton’s above and beyond efforts, I would also like to commend all of the athletic training staffs in Conference Carolinas. All of our athletic trainers work incredibly hard, and nothing in Conference Carolinas could happen without their hard work behind the scenes.”

UNC PEMBROKE SELECTED AS INAUGURAL CONFERENCE CAROLINAS ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS STAFF OF THE YEAR UNC Pembroke has been selected by its peers as the inaugural Conference Carolinas Athletic Communications Staff of the Year.

The 2021-22 UNC Pembroke Athletic Communications staff was composed of Associate Athletics Director/Communications & Strategic Initiatives Todd Anderson and Associate Athletic Communications Director Morgan Sheehan.

The duo work together to provide athletic communication services to 16 varsity sports on the UNC Pembroke campus.

“Todd and Morgan are incredibly well-deserving of this honor,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin. “It may be UNC Pembroke’s first academic year in the conference, but they have fit in seamlessly with our communication professionals. In addition to working tirelessly on their own campus, Todd and Morgan have also volunteered their valuable time at conference and NCAA Championships. I would also like to thank all of our Conference Carolinas communicators. Their hard work and efforts behind the scenes truly help us to tell the amazing story that we have on our campuses and overall in Conference Carolinas.”

UNC Pembroke Director of Athletics Dick Christy is thankful that their athletic communications office is being honored for their efforts.

PAIGE WISE OF FRANCIS MARION NAMED ITA SOUTHEAST REGION ROOKIE OF THE YEAR The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the recipients of the 2022 Division II Women’s Regional Awards and Paige Wise of Francis Marion was named Southeast Region Rookie of the Year.

The 2022 Conference Carolinas Women’s Tennis Player of the Year recorded a perfect 15-0 mark in singles play, including a 12-0 record in conference play at the No.1 position. The Ballito, South Africa native dropped only two sets all season and was not involved in any tiebreakers.

No Patriot female has ever gone through an entire (full) season of competition unbeaten in singles.

In doubles action, she played mostly with junior Hermon Mikael and posted an 8-8 record all at the No.1 spot. Wise helped lead FMU to a 14-5 record, a 10-win improvement over last season, and the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas tournament.

Wise is the second Conference Carolinas women’s tennis student-athlete to earn the award as Kayla Vaughn of Belmont Abbey earned the honor in 2020.

MARY BRIGID KECK OF MOUNT OLIVE CHOSEN USTFCCCA OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD REGIONAL FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year and Mount Olive’s Mary Brigid Keck was named Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year.

Keck, a native of Newark, Ohio, earned First Team All-America honors at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw. It was a big achievement for Keck, who entered the meet ranked 18th nationally. Keck was named the Female Field Athlete of the Year at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships after taking top honors in the discus and scoring in both the hammer and shot put.
