That's What Friends Are For

Because of Concordia Visiting Nurses, you have the opportunity to recuperate at home.

The number of friends who live in Concordia Independent Living is astounding. We introduce you to some of them.

The President’s Thoughts The Difference Makers…

Thank God for the “Difference Makers” ~ that’s the name I use to refer to the hundreds of people at Concordia who you can always count on to do the “little extras” for our patients and residents. Some of the Difference Makers just smile more; they just make things fun for the patients and the other staff members. Other Difference Makers just care a little more ~ some of them can sense what you need, almost before you do.

We have some Difference Makers in the kitchen who always make sure that the meal they serve is “just right.” We also have Maintenance Difference Makers, Laundry Difference Makers and we definitely have Housekeeping Difference Makers. Everybody wants a Nurse Difference Maker, and if you are confined to your bed or chair, you pray for a Nursing Assistant Difference Maker.

I think the Difference Makers are the spice of life. I don’t want to even imagine Concordia without them.

So thank you, Difference Makers ~ We salute you! Whether the differences are large or small, you make Concordia a better place to live, rehabilitate and work. So keep serving better, laughing more, wearing your funny hats, solving impossible problems, giving back rubs, picking up paper in the parking lot, adding the little touches to the bathrooms to turn them into spas, giving better baths and taking pride in being the very best at what you do.

Home is at the Heart of Caring Concordia Visiting Nurses Provide Therapy at Home Sylvia Smith, 74, chose Concordia Visiting Nurses following her valve replacement surgery last November.

Three years before, Sylvia’s doctor noticed a heart murmur at her annual exam. An echocardiogram showed a narrowing of the aortic valve and her doctor said they would watch for changes. She then developed an irregular heartbeat and suffered from fatigue and fainting; soon after, a cardiologist advised a valve replacement.

After the procedure, her heart went into atrial fibrillation, where the heart rhythm is fast and irregular and has to be controlled with medication. She was released on

Thanksgiving but needed home care.

“My relatives raved about the great care at Concordia, so I decided to trust them,” Sylvia said regarding her decision.

Choosing Concordia changed Sylvia’s life. Following surgery she gained 28 pounds of extra fluid and was so swollen that she had trouble moving around. Concordia Visiting Nurses came every day for the first few weeks after discharge and as needed until after Christmas. She was unable to climb steps, so she slept in a recliner until the home care therapist encouraged her to try and sleep in her own bed.

“A nurse ordered a TeleHealth monitor that was a lifesaver for me,” Sylvia said. “It was like having someone there all the time.”

If any irregular activity occurred, a nurse would call to check on her.

Sylvia was greatly impressed that regardless of the terrible winter weather, nurses made it for every visit.

“Concordia’s in-home care was more than I expected. They realized what people go through and know how to treat people, especially with my complications,” Sylvia said. “If I ever had to pick again I would choose Concordia.”

Born and raised in Natrona, Sylvia has lived in Ford City since October with her husband of 55 years, Jim, and their daughter, Laura. They also have three sons, Jim Jr., Bob and David, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Sylvia worked for Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in the dietary department. In 1998, she and her husband bought an RV and traveled throughout the U.S. Her favorite trip took them 15,000 miles to Alaska for a three-month tour.

There's No Place Like Homeplate After Major Injuries Prevented a Grandfather from Seeing his Grandson Play, a Little League Baseball Game Was Moved to Concordia It’s amazing how a traumatic experience can put into perspective the common things a person may have once taken for granted. Bob Jackman knows the feeling all too well.

After suffering horrific injuries from a work accident that saw tons of dirt literally crush him to near-death, Bob, 51, had plenty of time to reflect on things once seen as commonplace. He spent nearly a month in the hospital, with a bulk of that time in intensive care, where even the doctors and nurses wondered how he’d survived. He continued his recovery in the short-term rehab unit at Concordia at Cabot.

During his rehabilitation, Bob’s status was regularly a topic of conversation in the stands of his eightyear-old grandson’s little league games. One evening, the comment was made that it’s such a shame that Bob can’t come out to watch Vohn (his grandson) play. Conversation then veered to the fact that Concordia at Cabot has a baseball field on its campus.

The rest, as they say, is history.

After some coordination and a cou-

ple phone calls, the team played its next game at Concordia Field – with Bob throwing out the first pitch.

“That wasn’t my best pitch, I didn’t have any strength,” Bob laughed. “The whole experience was just very moving. I never expected people to care so much that they

would make something like that happen.”

Since then, Bob finished his inpatient rehab and is now coming to Concordia Outpatient Therapy several days per week to build his strength. He said the baseball game was just one of the many things

that showed him and his family that they chose the right place to get him back to life.

“The staff at Concordia went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable,” he said. “The most impressive thing was their attention to the details… the care was just outstanding.”

Bob lives in Jefferson Twp. with his wife Linda and daughter Emma.

They have one other daughter, Colleen, who is Vohn’s mother. She and Linda serve as Bob’s biggest advocates and cheerleaders.

His goal is to get back on the golf course by the end of the season – a lofty ambition for someone who, by all measures, shouldn’t have even survived the accident. But Bob isn’t the type to back down from a challenge.

Oh, and he’ll likely make it to quite a few more of his grandson’s baseball games... It’s one of those things he’s no longer taking for granted.

That's What Friends Are For Many Concordia Residents Enjoy Lifelong Friendships Among the motivations for selecting a senior living community, “exploring new interests and meeting new friends” is one that is always suggested in the promotional literature. But what about the many residents at Concordia who have chosen our retirement community because they have lifelong friends who already live here? More often than most would believe, our new residents heard about the lifestyle at Concordia from a friend … So we decided to talk to a few retirement 6 - Faith in Caring

Part 1 in a series living residents who gained some insight from people they knew.

Growing up in Kittanning, Jean Wyant formed many relationships that shaped her life. But little did she know when she met Mary Miller over 60 years ago that she had gained the friend of a lifetime.

“I knew Jean in high school, we

lived in the same town and had the same circle of friends,” Mary said.

“But we got to be really good friends in our World War II group where we bonded over different war-related stories.”

Traveling led them to Europe with a group from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (I.U.P.).

Throughout the years they kept in touch by playing Bridge every week and joining the same clubs.

Jean began to seriously consider moving to an independent

living community after her doctor urged her not to go up or down the basement stairs that led to both the laundry and the garage.

She was familiar with Concordia because her granddaughter works in occupational therapy at the Cabot location. She also knew Mary had moved to a Haven III apartment in September of 2013.

“Jean knew I was no longer driving and felt insecure living alone,” Mary said. “I talked to her about moving to Concordia.”

Three months later Jean moved into Concordia’s Haven II apartments and her friendship with Mary continues. Even though they are living in different buildings, Concor-

dia’s shuttle is available if they want to see each other. Together they enjoy attending concerts and going out to dinner.

“It really is nice to know that I have a friend here whom I’ve known most of my life,” Jean said.

“It is comforting because I didn’t know anyone here at Haven II when I moved.”

Jean loves being around people and tries to get out as much as possible, enjoying the many trips offered by the activities department.

“I am eating most of my meals in the dining room because that’s where you meet people,” Jean said.

“I go almost every evening to socialize!”

The social activities at Concordia allow residents to continue lifelong friendships as well as nurture new ones.

“Concordia keeps you as busy as you want to be,” Jean and Mary agree.

"BELLS & WHISTLES" New Concordia Website Offers Better Experience with Redesign, More Education and Video, Clean Navigation and F.A.Q. Sections In April of 2007, Concordia Lutheran Ministries launched a website that was both cutting edge in its function and beautiful in its design. Over the years, tweaks were made as the website adapted to rapidly changing technology -- as well as Concordia’s accelerated growth.

Seven years later, Concordia has finally outgrown that website. On April 15, a totally revamped, rede8 - Faith in Caring

signed www.concordialm.org was launched.

Users of the new website will find a modern, clean design, filled with vibrant pictures, videos, virtual tours and a wealth of information designed to educate people about Concordia services and locations as well as senior and health care issues in general.

A few new features include:

• Interactive maps that can be filtered by location, available services and Concordia homecare coverage areas • A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section dedicated to helping our visitors understand our industry and organization • “Responsive design” technology that reforms the website to your screen size

• And a few other “bells and whistles,” like a retractable navigation bar, scroll-over descriptions of services, welcome videos from administrators and more Another subtle feature is a revamped navigation that offers users several ways to get to any information on the site. Each of Concordia’s locations and Home & Community service lines has its own “micro-website” that is “separate but connected” to the overall Concordia website.

The new Concordia website is updated at least weekly with fresh information, new pictures/videos and more, so visitors are encouraged to check back often – and sign up for the new E-Newsletter.

Concordia Golf Outing Raises $75K

Concordia Centenarians Concordia at Cabot resident Ellsworth Johnson turned 100 years old on May 21. Ellsworth was born in Forrestville, PA. He owned an ice cream stand and married the late Helen Johnson in Cumberland, Maryland in November 1993 and enjoyed spending time taking care of his two dogs. Ellsworth lived with his sister Garnet Hoon in Haven I prior to moving into the Oertel Care Center three years ago. When asked his secret to living to 100, Ellsworth said, “I’ve got really good genes.”

Concordia at Rebecca Residence resident Elizabeth “Betty” Gayda Jordan celebrated her 105th birthday on April 3. Born in Pittsburgh, she was married to the late August Jordan on April 16, 1940. They had one daughter, Geraldine (Geri) Mataya. Betty also has two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Betty had various occupations throughout her lifetime. She worked in a funeral home, cigar factory and at Carnegie Mellon University. At age 69, she started working at her daughter’s beauty salon until she retired at age 99. Betty lived in West Mifflin prior to becoming a resident on October 2, 2012. When asked her secret to living to 105, Betty said, “To eat candy! Any kind of candy! It’s my medicine.”

Fishing Derby Surpasses Expectations Between 350-400 people came to Saxony Farm Lake on May 31 for the Concordia Fishing Derby. At least 200 fish were caught. Prizes were given on the hour for biggest bass and biggest blue gill. The biggest catch of the day was a 12¾ inch bass. Some fun facts – we

went through 450 hot dogs/buns, 400 bags of potato chips, 400 lbs. of ice for drinks and condiments and 1,200 worms. Special thanks to H.A.G.’s Bait in Shelocta, DD Lures and The SRU Competitive Bass Anglers, and Concordia Maintenance Tech Charlie Ekas for heading up the event.

The reviews are in for the Ninth Annual Fashion Show and attendees are labeling it “the best ever.” More than $24,000 was raised on Saturday, May 17 at the "Americana" event. Once again, the event saw a sellout crowd, more baskets than ever (68 auctioned gift baskets!!) and the largest number of vendors in the 16 - Faith in Caring

First manufactured in 1940 in Butler in response to the U.S. Army’s request for an all-purpose military vehicle, the Bantam Jeep was celebrated at a weekend event June 13-15. Concordia sponsored the Veterans Salute Luncheon in an effort to promote our focus on retirement living special options for veterans. Twentyfour Haven residents attended the lunch and four of them shared their stories about experiences they had with a Jeep when they served our country. Director of

In addition, Concordia Social Worker Audrey Tristani was part of the History Speakers Series How-To Clinic discussing Veterans Benefits and Long-term Care. Ninety-year old Haven I resident Maynard Miller (former Corporal in the “Army Air Corp” – later designated as “Air Force” Service 1943-46) tells his experience. “At the age of 19, I was inducted into the service and trained as a ROMG (radio operator, mechanic, gunner) and assigned to B25 (Billy Mitchell Bomber). At the end of WWII I was stationed at Westover Field, Holyoke, MA awaiting my turn to go to Fort Devon for discharge. I was temporarily assigned to the MP unit as an assistant to the Provost Marshall. I was responsible for my very own JEEP. This was a new experience and one of the outstanding things I remember is being excited to participate in an armed convoy to a bank in Springfield to pick up the monthly cash payroll for the soldiers at our base. At that time I did not know or appreciate the fact that the birthplace of the JEEP was in Butler, the area in southwestern PA which is home to me. Now I do know!”

Finding Joy in Tribulation

Disability, disloyalty, dishonor, disease, disobedience and discontentment. These are likely a part of your daily life. How do you respond to these negative situations? Do you avoid them at all costs? Do you pay someone sums of money to make them go away? Maybe you hope and pray they will go away on their own.

These situations, after all, are painful and ugly. They do not bring the easy choices and the care-free life that we would prefer to have.

We don't deserve this, do we? Aren't we good people?

Surely, we know that God created us in his own image and to be his children.

We read in Hebrews 12:5-11, “‘My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.' Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.”

How then would God have us respond to trials and challenges in our lives? He wants us to see Him hidden there. He wants the pain and suffering of trials to remind us that we cannot survive on our own. He wants to draw us to a closer relationship with him through our troubles. God demonstrated this in the life of

Joseph, Jacob's son, whose brothers sold him into slavery because they were jealous and hateful.

Many years later Joseph told his brothers, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” Genesis 50:20. He invites the weak, crippled, burdened and ill to come to him and He will give them rest (Matthew 11:28). He seeks out those who need Him in order to share with them the gift of eternal life.

Our heavenly Father provides for us the means to survive and rejoice in our trial and suffering when we seek his comfort in prayer and receive His gifts in Word and Sacrament. He gives you heartache in your life not to cause you to despair, but rather to seek Him and find his love which endures forever.

When we realize the truth about suffering we can join with the apostle Peter in saying, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who

by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith - more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire - may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:3-7

Deaconess Heather Wathall has accepted a call to serve at Concordia Lutheran Ministries and was installed at Concordia Haven II Chapel on Sunday, July 20. She completed a B.A. in theology and her certification requirements at Concordia University Chicago. Her primary responsibilities at several of Concordia’s locations include visiting the sick, conducting Bible studies, and spiritual counsel. Heather was commissioned at Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, IL on November 28, 2009 where she has served for the past five years.

She and her husband, Aaron and 10-month old son, Andrew live in Cabot.
