Graduating students share their fear of the unknown after college

With fall graduation just around the corner, students graduating from the University of New Mexico and other universities may encounter a new set of obstacles upon completing their current college career.

JahJett-Lyn Chavez will be graduating with two degrees: one in family and child studies and another in psychology. Chavez’s biggest concern after graduating is being able to pay for graduate school.

Chavez intends to continue her education through the graduate program at UNM but worries about the lack of scholarships available for graduate students. She said she was able to pay the entirety of her undergraduate degrees via scholarships, but she won’t be able to do the same for her master’s degree.

“That’s a huge concern, and now I have to take out student loans, and the process is just terrible,” Chavez said.

Upon comparing the online lists for undergraduate and graduate scholarships, the list of scholarships available at UNM is much smaller for graduate students than for undergraduates.

Jodie Whitehorse Willie, a graduating psychology student, said that she looks forward to saying, “I finally did it,” during her commencement ceremony. Despite that excitement, she still feels nervous about life after college.

“It’s kind of just scary to go out into the world and be a functioning hu-

man being that is contributing to society in some sort of way,” Willie said.

After graduation, Willie said she will continue working within her field of retirement work and will add a second job as a waitress to save money. Besides going out into the world, she worries that at some point her career will feel more like a chore than something she enjoys.

“I don’t want to feel like, ‘oh, it’s an obligation, it’s a drag.’ So I feel like balancing work and balancing your personal health is important to me,” Willie said.

Sophia Mejia, another upcoming psychology graduate, said she feels she won’t have the same solid support system that she has now upon graduating and moving on from college. She said that, as a student, if she made a mistake she had professors, staff and fellow students to rely on, but now she needs to confront life more independently.

In spite of that, Mejia looks forward to the future and she plans to move to Europe with her partner and start a new chapter there.

On Friday, Dec. 16th, graduating students from UNM will have the option to celebrate the finalization of their undergraduate degree at the commencement ceremony taking place at The Pit. For the 2022 fall semester, over 900 students will be graduating according to Nancy Middlebrook, the University secretary.

ROTC cadets prepare to graduate

This semester, the University of New Mexico ROTC program has four cadets graduating with undergraduate degrees: Victoria Anderson, Daniela Ortega, Steven Canales and Zachary Ninneman. Anderson, Ortega and Canales will all be leaving the program this semester, while Ninneman will be entering his master’s program and has three more semesters of ROTC left.

Anderson discussed how graduating from the program this semester created a bond between her, Ortega and Canales.

“We have to go in periodically for (physical training) tests or for late hikes, or we have to go get inspections on our uniforms and stuff like that. That’s definitely been kind of fun … I don’t go to all the regular ROTC stuff (anymore). But I go to a lot of our own stuff that’s getting ready for commissioning,” Anderson said.

Commissioning — the transition from cadet to officer — grants the graduating members of the ROTC the official rank of second lieutenant in their selected branch, kickstarting their specialized officer training and post-graduation military career, according to Michigan Technical University.

For Ortega, becoming close to

those in the program was an inevitability due to the amount of time they spend with one another, whether that be through training or assisting each other through personal problems.

“That’s what happens in the Army, you become really close to people, and you build memories … (like) being encouraged to eat the (Meals Ready to Eat) … That’s kind of something that they encouraged me (with). It’s one of my best memories because I wouldn’t have thought I would eat that stuff,” Ortega said.

Graduating in the fall instead of last May has been a different experience for the cadets. Anderson has seen a difference in how the younger students in the ROTC program treat her and her fellow graduates.

“Everyone else who’s in the program is like, ‘oh my gosh, you’re going to commission,’ and so everyone else in the program starts calling you like ma’am or sir. And that’s super weird,” Anderson said. “So all three of us joke about that — how people (say) like, ‘oh, hi, ma’am.’ And it’s like, no, no, no, don’t call me ma’am yet. It’s not time.”

Though she sometimes wished she had graduated last May with the rest of her class, Ortega has found the advantages in knowing those who have graduated prior.

“(The May graduates are) already ahead and stuff. So I mean,

the only good thing about it is if I have any questions about going active duty or any questions about any schools and stuff like that, I can always refer to them and ask them how they’re doing,” Ortega said.

Meeting people currently serving piqued Anderson’s interest in ROTC during her freshman year when she first heard of the National Guard from a professor. She had always loved the military, having a family connection to it, but she disliked the idea of moving around a lot. The National Guard offered an alternative.

“In the Guard, you might have to drill in different cities, but I’ll always be in New Mexico, and I love that,” Anderson said. “I like being able to serve but also being able to have more of a scheduled life.”

Ortega learned several things in ROTC, but she credits her time there with helping her grow both her leadership skills as well as as a person.

“I’ve learned a lot about leadership (and) about myself. It’s just a good time, being able to teach the younger ones, growing from being a freshman to a senior and being the leader, and showing them things you would have liked to learn when you were a freshman,” Ortega said.

Michaela Helean graduates into full-time reporting

With a mortar board covered in newspaper clippings, University of New Mexico senior Michaela Helean is graduating this fall semester with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a full-time job at the Rio Rancho Observer.

Helean started her internship at the Observer through the New Mexico News Fund, a fund created to foster journalism in New Mexico that also places college students and recent graduates in state newsrooms. Four days after starting her internship, she was offered a full-time job, fulfilling a childhood dream.

“I’ve always been a writer. Ever since I was able to write, I would write short stories for my parents,” Helean said. “I would watch the news with them. I grew up watching Gwen Ifill on PBS.”

The shift from being a student reporter in the journalism department, where you can take a month or two to work on a singular story, to now being responsible for two stories every day was stressful at first, according to Helean.

“It was stressful, writing a bunch of stories every day … Every day there has to be at least one story every hour to keep the website going. And that is the demand,” Helean said. “People want their news now … and so, to keep up with that, journalists like me have to produce stories like this. And at

first, I couldn’t quite keep up because it’s not what I’m used to.”

Quickly after starting, though, she got the hang of the workload by writing stories a week ahead of time while still being a full-time student at UNM and also building time into her schedule for herself and her mental health.

“For a while there, I wasn’t taking any time for myself. I was putting everything into the paper. But it’s important to remember the paper will still be there tomorrow,” Helean said. “So take a break once

in a while. Still do the work. Get it done and follow the expectations your bosses have of you, but also demand your own expectations from them. And that’s what I did.”

Her fiancé, Brandon Vasquez, says he has seen her whole mood shift since starting at the Observer and getting to work in a field she is passionate about.

“(I have been) seeing all the different things she has to go through and then seeing the ups and downs of the job, especially within the first few months, and she gets

to do what she loves,” Vasquez said. “She’s happy and her whole attitude had changed going from her last job, which was at Panera Bread, to this Rio Rancho Observer job. It completely flipped things upside down, and she was a lot happier, coming home a lot less tense, a lot less stressful, with a lot more faith in humanity.”

She credits much of her success to her time at UNM, specifically to one journalism professor: Gwyenth Donald. Donald’s tough but caring editing style in

class is what Helean said allowed her to succeed in her position at the Observer so rapidly.

“Her being hard on me really made my skin tough for when I did actually go into the workforce,” Helean said. “(It’s) one of those things where it’s like you don’t really realize how good of a teacher you have until you finish the class.”

Her passion for journalism manifests at a local level, where she feels like she can have the most impact serving her community.

“I know a lot of journalists are ambitious to get to The New York Times, The Washington Post or something like that, but not me,” Helean said. “I’d rather write for a small town newspaper because you’re more connected with me that way. And you actually have more of an impact.”

Her next career steps are lined up for her, with the next two years to be spent working for the Observer, and then the next three for the Albuquerque Journal, which is the parent paper of the Observer After that, Helean said she will be able to apply to go wherever she would like, with references.

“It’s kind of liberating too, because I’m getting all of the experience at once,” Helean said.

UNM grad Tayler Suazo moves from mortar boards to med school

One of the first things you might notice about upcoming University of New Mexico graduate Tayler Suazo is her loyalty to place and to family. Graduating this fall with a Clauve Outstanding Senior Award and a bachelor’s of science in biology with a double minor in chemistry, and health medicine and human values, one might expect frequent and numerous parties and celebrations to be in order. Suazo, at the time of her interview with the Daily Lobo, however, is back with family in her hometown of Abiquiu: a small town in northern New Mexico.

It was here that Suazo first real-

ized she wanted to be a doctor — and she knew she wanted to stay in New Mexico to do it.

“I knew since I was young that I had wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. I wanted to stay in-state to be with family and of course (to) get in-state tuition because I don’t have all the money in the world to pay for tuition. So, I wanted to stay in-state and I knew UNM had a medical school, so I knew my best chances of getting into UNM Medical School was to go to UNM for undergrad,” Suazo said.

Upon being admitted to UNM, Suazo received a slew of scholarships: the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Loyalty Award, the Jemez Mountain Cooperative scholarship, the El Cen-

tro Family Health Board scholarship and the UNM Scholars scholarship.

Most notably, Suazo is a Los Alamos National Laboratories scholar, something that not only afforded Suazo a scholarship, but a community as well through various events, mentoring opportunities and the other LANL scholars at UNM. Suazo would later go on to become a LANL ambassador her junior year of college, mentoring younger LANL scholars with their classes and hosting events.

Throughout her freshman and sophomore year of college, though, Suazo focused primarily on her academics, largely due to the transition from a small high school to a

public university. That being said, she still found ways

“I really stuck to my academics during my first couple of semesters; my campus involvement was always going to CAPS tutoring and Supplemental Instruction sessions, just making sure that I ended up with a good GPA after every semester. Especially ‘cause I knew I wanted to go to med school. By getting a good GPA, I was enlisted into the Pi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society. And that’s kind of what started my campus involvement,” Suazo said.

After her selection to Pi Eta Sigma and appointance as a LANL ambassador, Suazo would also be tapped for the Mortar Board Honor Society. She recounted the moment and how

it led to her meeting current Associated Students at UNM vice president, fellow LANL scholar and Mortar Board member, classmate and friend Krystah Pacheco.

“We were in the same position. We really didn’t know anybody, and she was super friendly. I think that was one of the first things I really liked about Tayler. And she’s also very approachable. That was probably one of the first things that I (could) really recognize when we first met,” Pacheco said.

Throughout the course of Suazo’s senior year, her and Pacheco’s friendship would develop through their collaboration in Mortar Board as well as through their shared class.

“It’s more like the interactions that came through Mortar Board, where

we continued to see each other. And then we also had a class together this semester, and she sat right in front of me,” Pacheco said. “So, seeing her twice a week, we always had conversations about the class, her goals for medical school and the status on her applying. So, it was through those small interactions where we continued to learn more about each other.”

Pacheco’s favorite memory of their friendship was when Suazo told her that she had been accepted into medical school. The excitement of the moment was certainly a factor, but for Pacheco, it was more memorable because of how that moment reflected who Suazo is: humble, hard-working and ambitious.

Suazo will first be completing a six-month internship with Los Ala-

mos National Laboratories before officially starting medical school next July. Upon completion of medical school and her subsequent residency requirements, Suazo plans to return to Abiquiu to become a primary care doctor.

“We definitely need doctors up here, and we don’t really need a lot of specialities. We need primary care doctors who are gonna see people on a regular basis for their chronic health concerns,” Suazo said.

Future goals aside, Suazo still acknowledged the “amazing feeling” of getting this far, emphasizing the work it took to get her here and what she’ll miss on her way out.

“It’s bittersweet; I will miss all my campus involvement. But it’s amazing. I look back and, com-

ing from such a small town, getting a bachelor’s degree is almost unattainable to some students. And the fact that I am finishing it, not only early, but Summa Cum Laude with good standing, it just makes me proud of what my community has produced in a sense,” Suazo said. “It takes a village to raise a child, and my family has done an incredible job of always supporting education. Just to see the light at the end of the tunnel and to know that I got accepted to med school — it’s an amazing feeling.”

Graduate Micaela Pacheco takes her final bow at UNM

Upcoming University of New Mexico graduate Micaela Pacheco will be closing this chapter of her life with a bachelor’s degree in theater, a career in spiritual healing and a love of sharing her creativity with those around her.

Having done theater ever since she was young, Pacheco initially wanted

to go into film. Now, she cannot see herself pursuing a traditional theatrical route at all. If she does get back into theater, she wants to use it as a medium to share her own creations in the form of devised work and performance art.

“I’ve loved to perform my whole life: I’ve loved to sing and act, and since I was really small I’ve been pulled to performance. And I did theater all throughout high school, and it just seemed like that was the logi-

cal thing to do in college … I was very interested in doing film and theater, but then somewhere along the way, I started to tap into my other passion of healing myself and then using that experience to help others,” Pacheco said.

Though she has found that her passions don’t lie in academia, she said that her experiences at UNM have been valuable in helping her move on to the next stage of her life, nonetheless. Pacheco’s primary goal will be

working on her business, Marigold Moon Healing, which sells artwork and crafts made by her and her business partner, Abigail Hutton, in addition to intuitive healing services and group meditation sessions.

“I’m thankful that I’ve gotten the opportunity to go to school because I know a lot of people don’t get that opportunity, and I’m so grateful for that. But I’m also really grateful to just be done, to put it behind me, to move on and do the things I’m passionate

about and excited about,” Pacheco said.

She said that she first got seriously into intuitive healing after meeting with curanderas, or Mexican and Latin American folk healers, at a fair held by UNM. Later, she found out she had great-great-grandmothers on both sides who had been curanderas, and she ended up training in curanderismo after that experience. She moved onto learning about reiki healing and see Pacheco page 14
