We have commenced the second decade of the twenty-first Century and the future invites us defiantly to be alert in an enterprising and innovating way; the technologic advances are moving at a surprising speed and the passing of the time often generates an estrangement with our past, with those actors who forged our history.

A rich history that reports effort, perseverance and fulfilled dreams, is that of those forgers of the nitrate industry that today, through this book, Album OF COMPAÑÍA DE SALITRES Y FERROCARRIL DE AGUA SANTA 1896, we revive again with great pride. it is very inspiring to recall those years when the nitrate industry made it possible for Chile to commence a great process of technologic development. Clear examples of this can be found in the hundreds of kilometers of railway lines, paved highways and better life quality for thousands of our fellow country men; all this thanks to the enterprise

of those who saw in the Northern pampa a great opportunity.

For almost a century, the nitrate industry gave Chile an unusual prosperity, actively operating 260 nitrate offices during the second half of the XIX century. The most modern industrial machinery was used and railway construction was quickly undertaken to transport the production to the ports.

This book, inspired by the ALBUM OF THE NITRATE AND RAILWAY COMPANY OF AGUA SANTA 1896, photographic work done by Luis Oddo, tells us this story and responds to the need to divulge the invaluable industrial nitrate patrimony which made Chile its protagonist between 1830 and 1920.

Nitrate gave Chile great prosperity, developing many projects in public works, such as the creation of the Industrial and Public Works Ministry, construction of rail road tracks throughout the country, improving and construction of more than one thousand kilometers of roads, construction of Malleco´s viaduct and bridges crossing the Maule, Ñuble and Biobio rivers, habilitation of ten ports, paving new roads in the most important cities,

boosting main conduct of the Mapocho river, establishing 80 educational institutions, 18 penitentiaries and drinking water to more than twenty cities.

The diffusion of the nitrate industry tells us how the development of the mining is assumed by enterprising men and workers, forming great companies in spite of enormous adversities in order to produce, transport and export nitrate to every corner of the world.

This publication is also a posthumous homage to the nitrate workers, many of which came from different parts of Chile and other Latinamerican countries with their families to live and work together with their descendants in spite of the adversity. They are the ones that formed this great nitrate industry, giving our country prosperity, only surviving today, like ghosts, no more than a dozen of them. Therefore, this deed is also an invitation to the national community to save the Chilean industrial patrimony.

has been treated with the utmost of care, succeeding to extract from it maximum information found under the silver halides, already deleted by time. The National Fotograph Center shows every image seen here. The original album will be properly preserved by the Nitrate Company to avoid being erased by time.

LUIS ODDÓ Luis Oddó (Juan Luis Oddó Osorio) Professional photographer, of French ascendancy, born in 1865 and one of the first persons in Chile who it is known to have been engaged in cinema. Author of several albums and catalogues of photographs and portraits of his collection, there were some that were distinguished which were those related with the nitrate industry of Iquique, the views of Santiago (Santa Lucia Hill, Alameda de las Delicias, National Congress) , as well as the series of the Bio Bio and Malleco bridges, and of the fictims of Lo Cañas and of the battle of Placilla, during the Civil War of 1891.

With regard to the origin of his family and professional formation the references are vague; it is known that the father, Felix Henri, came to Chile from Marseille in 1843, and was in the hotel industry founding one of the first establishments of that type in Valparaíso, the Continental as well as a similar one in Quillota and Santiago, the Hotel Oddo being especially known, located in Huerfanos and Ahumada. One of his brothers, Henri, followed his tracks, while Carlos took the road of photography settling in the city of Concepción until his death.

For his part, Luis Oddó, as he was known, maintained a photographic workshop in the center of the city of Santiago, in No. 8 Puente St. (Hernan Rodríguez Villegas, Hernan . When his father died in 1890, Luis Oddó, alter liquidating his company, traveled to Iquique, attracted by its fame of prosperous and modern city. In the following years he alternated photography with mining works. After some time he sold the shares that he had in the Santa Rosa ore deposit of the San Luis community and formed an association with the rich industrial Antonio Hameau to buy the photographic establishment of Luis Boudat, located at No. 32 Serrano St., with all the plates of views and portraits, together with a great collection of photographs of the nitrate oficinas, which were added to those obtained by Oddó entrusted by Cia. del Ferrocrril de Agua Santa and those entrusted by the Municipality of Iquique, as a result of the 4th Centenary of the Discovery of America (El Nacional, Iquique, April 2, 1892, p. 2)

The commercial seal of the company formed on the 1st of December 1891 will be Luis Oddo y Cia. starting with a capital of $ 3,000 contributed by Antonio Hameau, while Luis Oddo contributed with his work, the materials and the photographic equipment (Notarial of Iquique, Vol. 129, 1892, No. 42, p. 30 and 30 v).

Shortly after, Casa Oddó was widely known and had accrued sufficient dividends for him to acquire Hameau’s part on February 4, 1893 so that he could continue alone with the business.

Although Oddó is considered a professional inclined to a more commercial than artistic line , his disquietudes also induced him to make inroads in other lands. At the end of 1892 in its ample salons he frequently held meetings of magic lantern and dissolving views, shows that were very much appreciated by the public and greatly visited by the photographers who had grown in a large quantity.

The newspaper El Nacional gives an account of one of these presentations that lasted one hour with the following program. Views of graceful movements. Id. of Niagara falls, a complete collection. Id. of Monuments of Europe and the United States. Id. of the Columbus centenary in Iquique, a complete collection (Diario El Nacional, Iquique, November 18, 1892, p. 2 ) Although these curiosities were only curiosities, the vocation of Oddó did not end there. In May 1897 when the people of Iquique were still thrilled with the presentation of the cinematographer, he made his own animated views, which he exhibited in the Philharmonic Hall, located in Tarapacá Street. .

A daily paper, together with underlining the fact that the films could have been “developed and printed here in Iquique itself”, gives an account of how complex the process was to then continue: “. The photographer Mr. Oddò, after patient studies and not few expenses has deciphered the problem and the inhabitants of Iquique will have the pleasure of seeing for the first time animated scenes of local themes, of national customs…”

“He has developed to date three views: the arrival of an ordinary passenger train to this city, a scene in the urban railway station and a happy zamacueca at the edge of the sea. In a few days others not less interesting will be printed.” (Diario El Tarapacá, Iquique, June 1, 1897, p.2.)

He ended his business and on June 26, 1887 he concurred to the notary of Teobaldo Ernesto Pérez, to notarize the sale of his salon to Alfredo F. Syers Torres.

BRIEF HISTORY OF NITRATE Nitrate operations commenced around 1830 in the Province of Tarapacá, in the southern part of Peru especially to manufacture gun powder; it was also in 1830 when the first shipment of Nitrate was made destined to Europe and North America to be used as fertilizer. As of that date there was a stable growth of the production to reach 500,000 annual tons in 1870; all this production corresponded to the Peruvian territories of TarapacáShortly after the Bolivian nitrate lands of the Province of Antofagasta were incorporated with which production continued to grow reaching a million tons per year at the end of the nineteenth century and after the Pacific War. The maximum quantity produced amounted to 3 million tons in the years 1916-1918 coinciding with the First World War. Since 1879 Chile became the largest and only producer of nitrate in the world, after annexing to its territory the rich nitrate lands of Tarapaca and Antofagasta with a victory in the Pacific War over the allies Peru and Bolivia. The start of this was due to difficulties between Chile and Bolivia in the demarcation of their common border as Bolivia did not respect the Treaty of Limits signed in 1874 in its article IV where express mention was made of not encumbering the exports of Chilean companies, for 25 years, from the territories comprised between the

Towards 1890 and shortly after, around 70% of the nitrate industry was controlled directly or indirectly by the stock corporations that had their main office in London. In the following years however, an increase of Chilean and German investments was observed and thereafter the preponderance of the English influence started to decline, remaining in proportion with the Chilean in the first decade of the Twentieth Century. In 1912 and considering the joint production of the two provinces, Tarapacá and Antofagasta, the Chilean interests represented about 40% and around 60% those of other nationalities. Exports exceeded two million tons per year.

tensive in labor. It was replaced by the Guggenheim system, somewhat more technicized and massive in its production. So that in the year 1925 and then in 1930 the two large producing plants associated to the Guggenheim system appeared: Maria Elena and Pedro de Valdivia in the province of Antofagasta and in 1945 Oficina Victoria with the Krystal system in the province of Tarapacá; this was basically similar to the Guggenheim system, the difference being in the temperature of the leaching water.

Mention is made of the obsolescence of the Shanks system, the technologic delay of the production systems. the implementation of Labor Laws, and the slump in the Caliche grades as the originator of the debacle of the nitrate industry and the loss of most of the markets, without reflecting greatly in that the systems for the production of synthetic nitrate that came from the fixation of the nitrogen of the air was much easier and cheaper than any method that could imply extracting it from the soil as occurs in Chile and its export that represented thousands of kilometers to the place where it was used. To understand the problem better we can say that in the sale price of a quintal of nitrate, only 32% corresponded to the direct cost of production, as customs duties represented 35% of the price and the transport to Europe contributed with

The blocking of exports of nitrate towards Germany during the First World War by Great Britain hastened the implementation of the artificial production of nitrate, principal component of gun powder and which was urgently required to face the European conflict under development. The plants that produced the synthetic fertilizer in European territory rapidly multiplied and in 1938 they covered 80% of the world consumption while Chilean nitrate only covered 8%. The German chemist Fritz Haber was able to use the nitrogen of the air with the hydrogen to produce ammonia, base of the synthetic fertilizers and his fellow countryman Carl Bosch was a pioneer in the use of high pressure and temperature technology, indispensable requirement so that the reaction above described could occur.

Both worked in BASF and were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1918 and 1931 respectively because of their important contribution in the development of the synthetic fertilizers.

Tarapacà had the largest amount of Nitrate Works of the desert, there being around 165 plants. While the territory belonged to Peru individuals and small companies exploited the nitrate fields. From the experience of the guano, which left

very little money for the State, the Government of Manuel Prado on January 18 1873 issued a law creating the nitrate monopoly in the Peruvian Republic, which obliged those who exploited nitrate to sell in a compulsory way all their production to the Peruvian state at the price of two soles and forty cents per quintal. This involved the expropriation of the nitrate works that would be paid with State Bonds, action which extended until shortly before the problem with Chile and stopped when the conflict broke out. After the Pacific War the Chilean state did not wish to become involved in the industry as producer and recognized the original owners of the nitrate bonds who often, due to uncertainty and the war, sold their mining claims at their real value to a series of speculators, the best known being John Thomas North and Robert Harvey.

With respect to the Nitrate works in permanent activity throughout the cycle of expansion it is difficult to calculate how many of them did this at the same moment, as there were alternate periods of activity and then a period of paralyzation.

These periods were alternated depending on the most varied circumstances, the agreements among the producers to increase prices, restricting produc-

tion, which was the most recurrent. This obliged the workmen of the pampa to seek work permanently in the nearby plants that continued working. These industrial plants, of the same canton, usually were relatively close to each other.

This industry never again had the economic importance of the preceding years, languishing for decades; in 1968 Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile, Soquimich was formed with the participation of 63% belonging to Anglo Lautaro Nitrate Company, owner of Oficinas Maria Elena and Pedro de Valdivia and 37% of the State of Chile that kept Oficinas Victoria and Alemania operating. In 1969 when poor economic results persisted it was determined that the state should take over control of the company with 51% through CORFO. In 1971 due to the prevailing political system the State took over the total control of the nitrate operations, which continued to work at a loss. Years after, Soquimich was privatized, around 1983, completing the process in 1988, where it remains until now. It produces about 1.3 million tons of nitrate with a large amount of mixtures of fertilizers and, in addition, iodine, that has situated the company in a very successful economic position.

La operación de transporte permitía entregar en el puerto 18 carros por hora, con un rendimiento diario de 2.000 toneladas que se distribuían en el embarque por tres muelles bien acondicionados.

Caleta Buena y todo su equipamiento se vio afectado en 1929 por la acción destructora de un gran incendio, el que se inició durante una proyección cinematográfica en el teatro de la localidad, asunto habitual en las Oficinas Salitreras por lo inflamable del acetato de las películas; el fuego arrasó con muchas construcciones civiles y comerciales y al año siguiente la Compañía retiró su personal, el que tenía entonces muy poco trabajo.

Por años fue un pueblo fantasma, cuidado por algunos serenos y personal de vigilancia, sin ninguna actividad comercial, lo que motivó el paulatino desmantelamiento del poblado. En 1940 todas las instalaciones existentes fueron entregadas al fisco. En ese mismo año hubo un período de lluvias excepcionales en el desierto más seco del mundo, lo que provocó un aluvión de agua y barro que sepultó el poblado, en donde ya sólo vivía personal de vigilancia como hemos dicho. Con este acontecimiento se terminó una de las instalaciones mineras y comerciales más interesantes ligadas a la explotación de las pampas salitreras de Tarapacá.

In view of the Monopoly that Nitrate Railways or Compañìa del Ferrocrril Salitrero (CFS) had, the latter could, and did, charge very high prices for the transportation of nitrate from the Nitrate Works of Tarapacá towards the ports of shipment of Pisagua or Iquique.

Only Compañìa de Salitres de Agua Santa owner of several saltpetre lands in the canton of Negreiros dared and was capable of challenging the monopoly of the Nitrate Railways.

Since 1850 Compañía de Salitres de Agua Santa was in activity with the rudimentary “Paradas system” In the year 1874 it became the property of Campbell Outram & Compañìa, that proceeded to modernize the processing plant introducing the use of steam in closed circuits within the cachuchos or leaching tanks, that had been introduced shortly before in Oficina San Antonio de Zapiga by James Humberstone. From that moment, Agua Santa became the largest nitrate producer of the province of Tarapaca. It shipped its nitrate through the port of Caleta Buena where Mr. Humberstone had constructed a cableway in 1881 to surmount the 720 meters of the elevation between the top of the hill and the beach, where the wharves were. Carts drawn by mules transported the nitrate from the Nitrate Plant to the coast.

Oficina Agua Santa was about 3 kilometers distant from the town of Negreiros and about 38 kilometers from the port of Caleta Buena, that represented only half the distance to Iquique or Pisagua which were the ports through which the Nitrate Railways offered to ship the production of Oficina Agua Santa. Campbell, Outram & Co. were not willing to pay the exorbitant prices charged by the

Nitrate Railways, so that the only option that they had was to continue transporting their nitrate in carts drawn by mules to Alto de Caleta and from there take it down in their cableway to the port of Caleta Buena for subsequent shipment. This run took at least 8 hours with great difficulties, so that Campbell Outram decided to construct a railway requesting a concession from the Government in 1881.

An answer was received about this concession positively only about 8 years alter, on December 4, 1889. With the concession in their hands Campbell Outram & Cia. attempted to press the Nitrate Railways to obtain better prices in the transportation of its nitrate but they replied with a demand for violation of their Monopoly, obtaining a judicial order to annul the new concession. This judicial order was also revoked and a short time later the construction of the railway was authorized by decree No.197 of March 19, 1890. This decree limited the ownership of the railway for the Company for 25 years after which it would become State property. The same decree gave a very brief time of six months to complete the works. This peremptory period to construct a railway did not constitute a problem for the Company as they had been prepared for a long time for this moment, with the costs already estimated and all the studies of the layout had been completed and ready as well as the studies of the structures such as the Lagarto Bridge.

Finally the Chilean government called a bidding that was closed on March 1, 1890 to construct the new railway, which was awarded to the contractor Mr. Joaquin Lira. Days after the award Campbell Outram y Cia. transferred their rights to Messrs. Lauro Barros and Pedro Wessel, who in turn again transferred such rights to Compañìa de Salitres y Ferrocrril de Agua Santa; this company was formed on November3, 1890 and the functions of the construction and future exploitation of this Railway were integrated to the exploitation of Oficina Agua Santa.

Oficina Abra, Primitiva, Agua Santa, Valparaiso and Irene formed part of this Company. The service and tariffs of the Agua Santa Railway to Alto de Caleta were competitive and the facilities of the coast sufficient, so that in 1894 authorization was requested to extend the rails to the town of Huara to cover the demand of the Oficinas of that sector which was accepted. and the nitrate and merchandise of Oficinas Josefina, Progreso and Rosario de Huara were transported in this way.

The construction of the line started from Oficina Agua Santa towards Alto de Caleta and once the Works commenced they advanced very rapidly, as a result of the advanced planning of the work. Adverse situations occurred as there were acts of sabotage with dynamite in some sectors of the way, stealing of material, bureaucratic impediments, caused by those who were interested in seeing that the work would fail as it enormously damaged the other railway that transported the nitrate, the Nitrate Railways, company that until then had the monopoly of the transportation of all the nitrate produced in Tarapacà.

It was clear that the monopoly had ended. The major shareholder of that company was John Thomas North who, in addition, had a number of commercial interests in Tarapaca, such as the Desalination Plant of Iquique (Tarapacà Water Works) and a supplier of products and consumables for the nitrate oficinas. In spite of the obstacles mentioned, all the problems were overcome and culminated on September 19, 1890 at the end of the period given for its construction .

Two years later the Company executed a contract with the management of other oficinas of the sector, such as Rosario de Negreiros, Progreso, Democracia, Amelia, Aurora and Mercedes to transport the nitrate at a cost lower than the tariff maintained by the Nitrate Railways in the length towards Pisagua, which represented a

further blow to the Nitrate Railways whose lines ran parallel to Ferrocarril de Agua Santa between the towns of Negreiros and Huara.

The railway line of Ferrocarril de Agua Santa had two intemediate stations: Carmen and Central. The line that reached the Huara Canton started from Carmen Station, with a terminal in Oficina Ramirez. This rail that ended in Huara station passed by the Lagarto ravine, where a bridge was constructed, excellent engineering work where iron and wood were used for its construction.

In the terminal station of Alto Caleta service was provided to passengers to and from the town of Huara, in combination with the cableway during Monday, Thursday and Saturday; the train left Alto de Caleta at 8:00 and reached Huara at 10:20 hours returning at 15:00, reaching the Alto at 17:20. The inclined plane was so spectacular that it attracted; there were tourists who wished to feel the emotion of going up and down the more than 1,250 meters of the inclined planes, to surmount the 720 meters of difference of elevation between the beach and the top of the hill, so that it was very much visited through this combination.

In 1915 in accordance with the terms of the concession, the Railway passed to the State that rented it to Compañìa de Ferrocarril del Alto Caleta a Negreiros that we suppose was the former owner with a different name.

The economic crisis of 1927 made it compulsory to suspend the elaboration of nitrate for many companies of Tarapacá especially those of the Negreiros Canton where the grade of the caliche (raw material) had declined considerably due to the many years of exploitation, causing with it a downturn in the activity of Alto de Caleta and the port of Caleta Buena; it was only in 1936 that the activities of Oficina Agua Santa and its associated Railway ceased completely .

CALETA BUENA The exploitation of the different ore deposits in the zone of Iquique caused the creation of ports and bays for shipment in the coast of Tarapacá. The most important were Iquique, Pisagua, Junin, that also used an inclined plane and Caleta Buena; in 1881 Mr. James (Santiago) Humberstone obtained, in representation of the company, owner of Oficina Agua Santa, a concession fro the Chilean Government for a time period that was determined by the duration of the Chilean occupation in Tarapacà to construct a cableway that would join the Alto of the top of the hill with the port zone or Caleta Buena, ending the shipments that previously were made through Mejillones due to the longer distance that that implied.

From 1881 to1890 all the nitrate of Oficina Agua Santa was transported to the coast in carts drawn by mules.

Thus at the end of the nineteenth century two industrial establishments of great activity had merged, one in the beach zone, Caleta Buena and the other in the plain at the top of the will called Alto de Caleta and that later would be the terminal station of the Agua Santa Railway.

The company installed a large workshop in this place which was in charge of everything that concerned the railway together with a boiler room, a blacksmith section and the body section that fabricated the cargo and passenger coaches of this railway.

The company that owned Oficina Salitrera de Agua Santa had installed in Caleta Buena wharves steam cranes, warehouses, offices, houses, a dump to repair launches, a desalination plant with its respective storage tanks, a system of railway lines t move the cargo, an electric plant and, in a coastal promontory, tanks to store the

oil unloaded from the ships destined to the service of the diesel motors of Oficina Agua Santa.

In advance a great variety of commercial establishments had been installed in Caleta Buena, where there were nine grocery stores, three of assorted merchandise, two pharmacies, six eating houses, butchery, a bread shop, a clock store, a shoe store, a medical clinic, a customs agent and the American Hotel of Nestor Guevara.

The public offices were represented by a rural Subdelegation and two districts, that of the port of Caleta Buena and of Alto Caleta, where a subdelegate operated, and in each district a judge and receivers.

The density of the children population obliged the educational authorities to create an elemental school in the port of Caleta Buena and a mixed school in Alto de Caleta, there having existed previously a boys’ school in Caleta Buena.

Also a customs office was installed with complete personnel, a catholic church and a Post Office that was located in El Alto.

There were four elevators, constructed on different dates and by different companies. The first one, constructed by Humberstone in 1881 consisted in two parallel lines with a 76 cm. gage that permitted raising the empty car, taking advantage of the traction of the car that descended loaded with nitrate, activated by the force of gravity. A second brake system provided efficiency to the maneuver and a sophisticated mechanism prevented that in case of rupture of the cable, both cars would fall. In the terminals there were distribution lines to receive and dispatch the cargo.

Advantage was taken of the altitude of the hill, 720 meters, with an inclination that varied between 22 and 35º with a line that extended in a length of 1,250 m, divided in three sections of similar dimensions between them, each

of which operated with its own controls. The profiles of the land were used in such a way that it would have a parabolic surface with greater pronunciation in the upper part to permit that the greater weight of the car that descended should serve to transport the empty car that went up. The lower part was less sharp, so that it reduced the speed and served as brake for the car that was descending, which ran at an average speed of 15 Kms. per hour.

In each section of the line there were stations where the loaded and empty cars were exchanged by means of a system of turntables that moved them laterally.

The transport operation permitted delivering 18 cars per hour to the port., with a daily yield of 2,000 tons that were distributed in the shipment by three well qualified wharves.

Caleta Buena and all its equipment were affected in 1929 by the destructive action of a big fire, which commenced during a cinema projection in the theater of the locality, situation that was usual in the Nitrate Oficinas because the acetate of the films was very inflammable; the fire destroyed many civil and commercial constructions and the following year the company removed its personnel, that at the time had very little work.

For years it was a phantom town, cared for by some watchmen and vigilance personnel, without any commercial activity which caused the gradual dismantling of the town.

In 1940 all the existing installations were delivered to the State. During that same year there was a period of exceptional rains in the driest desert of the world, which caused a flood inundation of water and mud that buried the town, where there were only watchmen as we have said.

This event put an end to one of the most interesting mining and commercial installations linked to the exploitation of the nitrate pampas of Tarapacá.

The administrator of a Nitrate Plant was a product of his times and who kept a form of relation of workman-employer that was very arbitrary, very typical of the end of the nineteenth century. There were some remarkable exceptions to the above as is the case of James T. Humberstone, Administrator of Oficina Agua Santa and several Oficinas in Tarapacá known by his gentle and kind treatment to his workers. This job required some essential requisites and as such inevitable. In the first place, a very good knowledge of the nitrate business, warranted by sufficient experience which occurred with a long life of work in such business. In the second place, to be a foreigner, preferably of British origin or first Chilean generation. There was in such requirement a matter of trust that derived from the use of the English language, sharing the idiosyncrasy, the way of life and the forms of culture that expressed the essence

or the British condition. This, it is clear because the modality of economic production in question was a genuinely European matter, mostly British, since its conception, form of development, operative regulations and commercialization of production. In addition, additional requirements were health compatible with the life of forced isolation in which he had to work and, hopingly, a strong character that would permit imposing the operative norms and exercising the corresponding superior command. He was the maximum authority of the Oficina and, as such, his decisions had the nature of indisputable.

He acted and was seen especially in the golden era of the system (between 1900 and 1930) as a real feudal lord and it was cared that such image should be maintained, as in a certain way the prevailing system required it. But that also meant and he had the maximum responsibility of all the operative and

productive system under his care, and he was accountable in any event before the management and board of directors of the company. The fact of having the sum of power and faculties made him live virtually isolated from his personnel who worked in the pampa with whom he was not usually have social intercourse, except on national holidays and Christmas. For several decades only English was spoken – language of common obligatory use, because as a general rule, he was not sufficiently fluid in Spanish View from somewhat further south than the previous one, with a launch loaded with destination to one of the ships standing in the bay. uando se empezaron a construir las Oficinas, el transporte del caliche se hacía en carretas, tiradas por mulas, porque los rasgos o frentes de trabajo de las calicheras estaban cerca de las Oficinas, las que fueron levantadas en los mismos terrenos donde se hicieron los Pedimentos. En esta imagen vemos un grupo de carretas estacionadas frente a la casa de la Administración, temprano en la mañana, probablemente esperando órdenes. Estas carretas estaban construidas de fierro remachado, que podían transportar hasta 1.5 metros cúbicos de material. Las ruedas con rayos de madera estaban rodeadas por una huincha de fierro.

When they started to construct the Oficinas the transportation of caliche was done in carts drawn by mules, because the rasgos or work fronts of the caliche fields were near the Oficinas, which were established in the same lands where they had filed the Petitions. In this image we see a group of carts stationed in front of the Administration house, early in the morning, probably waiting for orders. These carts were constructed of riveted iron that could transport up to 1.5 cubic meters of material. There was an iron strap around the wheels with wooden spokes.

In view of the enormous importance of the mules in the work of a nitrate plant, these were well fed and cared for; as a general rule they were brought from Argentine and their food was brought from the oases and fertile transversal valleys that existed in the pampa of Tarapacá such as Camiña, Huatacondo and Pica, the three of great importance at that time. n los pasos y fotos anteriores vimos los procesos para obtener la materia prima que se encuentra firmemente asentada en el terreno; luego como se la reducía a un tamaño transportable y en esta foto vemos a un par de obreros que destrozan los bolones en el fondo de la calichera en pedazos más pequeños y los va tirando a una cancha en terreno plano. El tener que lanzar piedras de varios kilos de peso hasta una altura de 2 o más metros y nos da una idea de lo que este trabajo necesitaba como esfuerzo muscular en medio de una pampa azotada por el aire seco y caliente, propio del desierto. Luego venía cargar la carreta Cada hombre trabaja por su cuenta en la extracción y vende a la casa el material extraído a tanto por m.3 o carretada, según la dificultad de extracción y ley del caliche. Por esta razón a este obrero se le llamaba particular.

In the above steps and photos we saw the processes to obtain the raw material that is firmly established in the land; then how it was reduced to a transportable size and in this photo we see a couple of workmen breaking the boulders in the bottom of the calichera into smaller pieces and throwing them to a yard in straight land. Having to throw stones of several kilos of weight up to a height of 2 or more meters gives us an idea of what this work needed as muscular effort in the midst of a pampa stricken by dry and hot air, as in the case of any desert. Then the cart was loaded. Each man works for his own account in the extraction and sells to the house the material extracted at so much per m3 or cartload according to the difficulty of extraction and the grade of the caliche. For this reason this workman was called a “particular”.

os chanchos o chancadoras de Caliche fueron una pieza de la máxima importancia en el proceso productivo del salitre; una vez que las carretas con el material llegaban del frente de trabajo, lo vaciaban en los buzones (extremo superior derecho de la foto). Estas estructuras tenían la forma de un gran estanque, con capacidad para varios metros cúbicos de material, que terminaba como un embudo que vaciaba por gravedad el caliche a las chancadoras, que al molerlo lo dejaba reducido a un fino cascajo. Este material molido era recogido por una vagoneta colocada inmediatamente debajo de la chancadora, para ser conducida a los cachuchos o estanques de lixiviación , que se encontraban próximos a esta estructura. Agua Santa tenía 6 chancadoras de 24” de la marca Blake Marsden,

The “chanchos” or crushers of Caliche were a piece of maximum importance in the productive process of nitrate; once the carts with the material reached the work front they emptied it in the bins (upper right extreme of the photo). These structures had the shape of a large tank, with capacity for several cubic meters of material, that ended as a funnel that emptied the caliche by gravity into the crushers, and when crushed was reduced to a fine gravel. This crushed material was picked up by a wagon placed immediately under the crusher to be conducted to the cachuchos (coil pans or leaching tanks, that were close to this structure. Agua Santa had six 24” Blake Marsden tanks.

a Máquina está compuesta de una serie de grandes depósitos o Cachuchos de fierro –Agua Santa contaba con 32 de ellos- de varias toneladas de capacidad, suspendidos sobre pilares de fierro o cemento y en cuyo interior hay un serpentín por donde circula vapor a alta temperatura.

Al circular el vapor este hace hervir por varias horas el agua. (Sección superior derecha de la foto).

En los cachuchos se vacía el caliche acendrado o molido y una vez lleno, se abren las llaves de agua.

Como estos cachuchos están colocados en series, el agua se hace circular del cachucho que ya se elaboró y cuya agua va teniendo un menor porcentaje de nitrato, hasta el cachucho que recién se ha cargado, enriqueciendo así el caldo, que después de varias horas de proceso se hace correr a otros depósitos, donde se decanta, y que se denominan chulladores. El líquido que antes de llegar al chullador tenía un aspecto turbio terroso, sale de aquí transparente amarillento, para ser recibido en grandes depósitos planos, denominados bateas,

donde el nitrato se precipita por enfriamiento.

(Centro de la fotografía) En todo este proceso, intervienen el jefe de Máquina, mayordomos y llaveros para ejecutar los traspasos de los caldos de un depósito a otro.

Una vez terminado el tratamiento del caliche, queda el depósito o cachucho con varias toneladas de un residuo barroso, más o menos duro por la cantidad de ripio insoluble. El caldo se lleva a cristalizar en depósitos de fierro laminado, de fondo inclinado y que tienen llaves de desagüe en la parte más baja. Estos depósitos o bateas, contenían unos 12 metros cúbicos.

La colocación de las bateas se hacía en hileras de modo que quede una frente a la otra, con su parte más profunda contigua y con una canal común para la salida del líquido. iron Cachuchos – Agua Santa had 32 of them, of several tons of capacity suspended on iron or cement pillars and in the interior of which there is a coil through which steam circulates at high temperature.

When this steam circulates it makes the water boil for several hours (upper right section of the photo).

The crushed or triturated caliche is emptied into the cachuchos and once full, the water faucets are opened. As the cachuchos are placed in series, the water is made to circulate from the cachucho that has already been elaborated and whose water is having a lower percentage of nitrate, to the cachucho which has just been loaded, thus enriching the liquid that after several hours of process is run off to other deposits which are called chulladores where it is decanted.

The liquid that before reaching the chullador, had a turbid earthy aspect, comes out of here transparent and yellowish to be received in large flat deposits called bateas (vats), where the nitrate is precipitated by cooling. (Center of the photograph).

In all this process, the head of the Plant, foremen and llaveros intervene to execute the transfer of the liquid from one deposit to another.

Once the treatment of the caliche is completed, the deposit or cachucho remains with several tons of a more or less hard muddy residue because of the amount of insoluble gravel. The liquid is taken to crystallize in deposits of laminated iron, with an inclined bottom and that have drain cocks in the lowest part.

These deposits or vats contain about 12 cubic meters.

The vats were placed in rows so that one was in front of the other with its deepest contiguous part and a common canal to remove the liquid. The liquid was left about 5 days in the vats to cool and crystallize; then the agua vieja was caused to run off and the nitrate was piled up in the highest part of the bottom.

When the nitrate has crystallized and the rest of the liquid has returned to the processing plant the arrolladores start their work who with large shovels pile up the nitrate in an extreme of the bateas and from there it is transferred to small cars that are pushed by the canchadores and emptied from high pillars called muelles to the yard, where it remains in big piles to complete their drying up until the moment when they are bagged; when this is going to happen, a crew fills the jute bags that have a capacity of 130 kg. And then the nitrate loaders leave the bags in the flat cars in which they reach Alto de Caleta Buena and the port.

The work of removing the refuse from the cachuchos was one of the most sacrificed Works within the Oficina; often they had to take out the still hot refuse from the cachuchos, in a very narrow and hot space, constituting formidable work.

BOTADEROS DE RIPIO REFUSE DUMPS

C

omo en todo proceso minero, al final de la separación del componente principal o salitre del caliche o materia prima, se generan ripios que deben ser depositados fuera de la Máquina, que es el nombre genérico de la instalación productora del salitre.

Una vez terminado el tratamiento del caliche, queda el estanque o cachucho con varias toneladas de un residuo barroso, más o menos duro por la cantidad de ripio insoluble. Aquí entran entonces a trabajar los desripiadores, que abren una pequeña compuerta en el fondo por donde empiezan a vaciar el cachucho aún a una temperatura elevada. Estos obreros trabajan desnudos de la cintura arriba y tienen que ser de una contextura fuerte para resistir el trabajo en las condiciones descrita. En esta foto vemos la vagoneta que conduce el ripio, el que es arrojado al costado de la Máquina.

As in all mining processes

at the end of the separation of the principal component or nitrate of the caliche or raw material, tailings are generated that must be deposited away from the Maquina, which is the generic name of the installation that produces the nitrate.

Once the treatment of caliche is terminated, several tons of a muddy residue remain in the tank or cachucho, which is somewhat hard due to the amount of insoluble gravel. Now the desripiadores start to work, opening a small gate in the bottom from where they start to empty the cachucho still at a high temperature. These workers are naked from the waist up and must have a strong physical condition to resist the work in the conditions described. In this photo we see the wagon that takes the gravel, which is thrown on the side of the Maquina.

Generalmente se encontraban en la parte baja de la Máquina y muy cerca o debajo de los cachuchos. Proveían de energía a las maestranzas y talleres. En un comienzo de la Oficina Agua Santa estos calderos funcionaban con carbón traído desde Cardiff, pero al hacerse cargo el Sr. Humberstone, los transformó para funcionar con petróleo. Requerían de una supervisión constante y sus operadores hacían turnos dado que funcionaban día y noche.

Boilers necessary to produce steam that circulated within the coils of all the cachuchos. As a general rule they were in the lower part of the Maquina and very close to or under the cachuchos. They provided power to the workshops. At the beginning of Oficina Agua Santa these boilers operated with coal brought from Cardiff, but when Mr. Humberstone took over he transformed them to operate with oil. They required constant supervision and the operators worked in shifts as they worked day and night.

ara la casa de la Administración de Agua Santa, la elección del sitio de emplazamiento estuvo determinada por factores prácticos en donde el conjunto urbano completo estaba al servicio de las labores industriales, solo que era la única construcción que se encontraba separada de otras construcciones. En su diseño y estilo arquitectónico, la Administración de la Oficina Agua Santa y de la pampa en general, predomino un diseño ajustado a la importancia de la oficina; la fachada presentaba casi siempre grandes corredores para proveer de sombra. Este diseño actuaba como respuesta a los requerimientos de sombra, de aireamiento, comodidad de uso, distribución espacial interior y protección del viento y calor entre otros. En su diseño, la casa de la Adminis-

tración en Agua Santa tuvo una techumbre a dos aguas con lucanas para mejorar la iluminación. El resultado, fue una gran casa bastante cómoda y funcional, con un agradable aspecto, donde en el exterior encontramos en todo su perímetro unos grandes corredores de madera labrada, que proveían de sombra a la construcción. Este edificio tuvo un solo piso, en donde el Administrador y su familia compartían el uso de ciertos salones, el comedor y un patio interior-cubierto con caña del Ecuador-, con otros empleados superiores.

En otro sector de la casa, al que se accedía por el exterior, se encontraban las aéreas propiamente administrativas, como salas de reuniones, tenedurías de libros etcétera. En el frente es posible distinguir una cancha de tenis.

election of the place to build the Administration house of Agua Santa was determined by practical factors where the complete urban assembly was at the service of the industrial work except that it was the only construction that was separated from other buildings. In its design and architectonic style, the Administration of Oficina Agua Santa and of the pampa in general, a design adjusted to the importance of the Oficina prevailed; the frontage presented almost always large corridors to provide shade. This design acted as a reply to the request of shade and airing, comfortable to use, interior spatial distribution and protection from the wind and heat, among others. In its design the Administration house in Agua Santa had a peaked roof with louvers to improve illumination. The result was a big quite comfortable and functional house, with a pleasant aspect, where outside we find in all its perimeter great corridors of dressed lumber that provided shade to the construction. This building had only one floor, where the Administrator and his family shared the use of certain salons, with other senior employees: the dining room and an interior patio-covered with Ecuador cane. In another sector of the house to which there was access from the exterior, were the administrative areas such as meeting, bookkeeping rooms, etc. It is possible to distinguish a tennis court in the front.

l salón de la casa del administrador era bastante utilizado fundamentalmente después de cenar; se pasaba al salón para disfrute de un tiempo de reposo, durante el cual los varones procedían a fumar y beber un whisky, mientras se conversaba de las novedades del día en la Oficina o de los acontecimientos internacionales. Eventualmente, el gramófono-inventado unos pocos años antesy su música daban un toque de familiaridad a la velada. El mobiliario correspondiente a cada una de las habitaciones de la casa de la Administración contribuía fuertemente al confort del que se quería disfrutar, dándole el aspecto tan típicamente británico de lujo victoriano de los inicios del siglo XX. Es así como chimeneas, cortinas, lámparas y alfombras – que podemos apreciar nítidamente en las fotos de este álbum- corroboran lo afirmado con anterioridad. Hay también buenos sillones, mesas laterales y una buena cantidad de litografías de generoso tamaño, enmarcadas que penden de las cuatro murallas.

The sitting room of the administration house was used often fundamentally alter dinner; they all passed to the sitting room to enjoy a moment of relaxation during which the men smoked and drank a whisky, while talking about the news of the day in the Oficina or of international events. Eventually, the gramophone – invented a few years before – and its music gave a touch of familiarity to the evening. The furniture corresponding to each one of the rooms of the Administration house contributed strongly to the comfort which they wanted to enjoy, giving it the typically British aspect of Victorian luxury of the beginning of the twentieth century. Thus fire places, curtains, lamps and carpets – that can be clearly appreciated in the photos of this album – corroborated what was stated previously. There were also good armchairs, side tables and a large quantity of framed lithographs of generous size, that hung on the four walls.

In this general view of Oficina Agua Santa it is possible to observe some peculiarities of this Oficina which is that it had two Maquinas: the new one and the old one, one at the left and the other at the right and in the center the front of the Administration House can be seen with its tennis court in front. The drying and bagging yards of both Maquinas can be seen behind the Administration. It is also possible to distinguish in the foreground the corrals for the mules and some disperse carts. It is possible to observe on the right the tailing cake of the old Maquina.

n esta foto de la máquina nueva vemos grandes acopios de salitre a ambos lados de los muelles y más atrás, una buena cantidad de bateas sobre sus soportes de pino Oregón.

Estas bateas se edificaban separadas del suelo, a unos dos metros de altura, para que al momento de acopiar el salitre producido, este pudiese ser vaciado por gravedad desde los carros especialmente fabricados para esta función y que permitía un importante ahorro de tiempo y energía al descargar este producto. Vemos también los pequeños carros del ferrocarril siendo cargados con sacos de salitre recientemente producido.

this photo of the new Maquina we see large amounts of nitrate stockpiled on both sides of the muelles and at the back a good quantity of vats on their Oregon pine stands. These vats were constructed at a height of two meters separated from the ground so that when the nitrate produced could be stockpiled, they could be emptied by gravity from the cars especially fabricated for this operation and that permitted an important saving of time and energy when unloading this product. We also see the small railway cars being loaded with bags of recently produced nitrate.

With an aspect similar to the new Maquina, the arrangement of the cooling vats attracts attention, as they are not grouped over a wooden frame but in a lineal group of pairs of vats very close to the ground, that unload on both sides of the tanks, making the process of bagging more tedious because of the disperse way in which this is done.

Railway station was on one side of the new Maquina and from there the nitrate production was carried to Alto de Caleta, from where it was taken down to the port of Caleta Buena to be shipped.

Aquí la Compañía de Salitres y Ferrocarril de Agua Santa tenía bodegas, casa de máquinas y cocheras en donde guardaba su material rodante, especialmente los coches de pasajeros, por ser un punto terminal en el trayecto. A 1.5 kilómetros más al sur, se encontraba la Oficina Constancia donde definitivamente el ferrocarril tenía su punta de rieles.

Whe farthest station at the house that Ferrocarril Agua Santa arrived was in the town of Huara. and here, for a short section its lines were parallel to those of the Nitrate Railways, its competitor. In this point merchandise and passengers coming from Iquique were exchanged. Here Compañìa de Salitres y Ferrocarril de Agua Santa had warehouses, a power house and carriage house where it kept its rolling stock, especially the passenger cars as it was a terminal point in the line. Oficina Constancia was at a distance of 1.5 kilometers further south, where its lines or rails definitively ended.

Oficina Rosario de Huara was about 4.5 kilometers north of the town of Huara, and the transportation of its nitrate was attended by the Agua Santa railway. The Oficina belonged to Rosario Nitrate Co. This station was inside the Oficina, next to its industrial sector.

a estación del Lagarto era el punto en que el ferrocarril tomaba el desvío hacia la importante Oficina Valparaíso de la Compañía. Esta estación se encontraba a unos dos kilómetros al este del Puente Lagarto y a unos 12 kilómetros de la Oficina Rosario de Huara.

The Lagarto station was the point where the railway took the siding to the important Oficina Valparaiso of the company. This station was at about two kilometers east of Lagarto Bridge and about 12 kilometers distant from Oficina Rosario de Huara.

uente Lagarto, magnífica obra realizada en fierro y madera para vencer la quebrada del Lagarto y ahorrar tiempo en el viaje hacia Caleta Buena. En sus extremos contaba con desvíos para cambiar el frente a las locomotoras y estaba próximo a la estación Lagarto y su desvió hacia la Oficina Valparaíso.

Magnificent work made in iron and wood to traverse the Lagarto Quebrada and save time in the trip towards Caleta Buena. Its bases or piles that sustained it are still holding up. It had sidings to change the front of the Locomotives and was next to the Lagarto station and its siding towards Oficina Valparaíso.

También desde esta estación, el tren, mediante un desvió podía llegar a la estación terminal de Huara por el sur, invirtiendo totalmente el sentido de la marcha; aquí las locomotoras eran abastecidas de agua para seguir hasta la próxima estación, Lagarto.

Carmen Station was an intermediate point between Agua Santa and el Alto de Caleta. Also from this station, the train, through a siding could reach the terminal station of Huara from the south, inverting completely the sense of the advance; here the locomotives were supplied with water to continue until the next station, Lagarto.

n medio del desierto la estación Carmen aparte de proveer del agua necesaria a las locomotoras era la encargada de dirigir el tráfico de los números convoyes que atravesaban la pampa hacia o desde Caleta Buena. Se encontraba a unos 9 kilómetros al este de la estación Central. Este lugar estaba bastante poblado para poder atender el ferrocarril y seguramente aquí se modificaba la composición de los convoyes, al agregar los carros provenientes del sector de Huara; su estación tenía un mirador desde donde era posible controlar el tráfico ferroviario.

In the midst of the desert Carmen Station, apart from providing the necessary water to the locomotives, was in charge of directing the traffic of the number of convoys that crossed the pampa from and to Caleta Buena. It was at about 9 kilometers east of the station east of the Central Station. It is very impressive to see in the midst of the desert the level of activity of this railway that ran from Alto de Caleta towards the interior. As a general rule on their way back they moved several kinds of consumables for the Oficinas and fuel, wether coal or oil.

Here we see five convoys simultaneously returning to the interior.

PARTIDA DE UN CONVOY DE PASAJEROS DEPARTURE OF A PASSENGER CONVOY

a estación del Alto de Caleta constituía el punto terminal del ferrocarril de Agua Santa en la costa y dado que se había constituido en un importante asentamiento urbano, movilizaba bastantes pasajeros entre la costa y las oficinas del interior Muchos pasajeros llegaban directamente al puerto de Caleta Buena y se movilizaban desde ahí al interior. Por supuesto que la salida y llegada de un tren de pasajeros constituía todo un evento que la comunidad gustaba de presenciar o bien despedir a los que están de viaje.

The Station of Alto de Caleta constituted the terminal point of the Agua Santa Railway in the coast and as it had become a very important urban settlement, it moved plenty of passengers between the coast and the Oficinas of the interior. Many passengers arrived directly to the port of Caleta Buena and traveled from there to the interior. Naturally the arrival and leaving of a passenger train constituted an event that the community liked to see or express their farewell to those who were traveling.

emos el patio de maniobras de la estación del Alto de Caleta un convoy encabezado por una locomotora Baldwin del tipo utilizado para el tráfico en la línea principal; esta es la habitual llegada de un tren cargado con salitre de las Oficinas del interior; la locomotora que aquí aparece es de la marca Baldwin fabricada en los Estados Unidos presumiblemente en 1892 y traída por piezas hasta el puerto de Caleta Buena, en donde a través del andarivel fue subida a los talleres que el ferrocarril mantenía en el Alto, tanto para el ensamblaje de estas locomotoras como para la reparación de ellas.

We see the maneuvering yard of the Alto Caleta station, a convoy headed by a Baldwin Locomotive of the type used for the traffic in the man line; this is the usual arrival of a train loaded with nitrate from the Oficinas of the interior; the locomotive that appears here is a Baldwin fabricated in the United States presumably in 1892 and brought by pieces to the port of Caleta Buena, where through the cableway it was lifted to the workshops that the Railway had in the Alto, both for the assembly of these locomotives and for their repair.

A side look at a Baldwin. The gage was 2’6” (76 centimeters) of the type called “tank” as they carried the water tank over the boiler, as a saddle and in the car or tender behind it carried oil used as fuel.

Its classification from a railroad point of view and according to the arrangement its wheels is 2-4-2 S T% o(ST Saddle Tank). In any event it is a light type of locomotive because of its narrow gage.

Aparentemente se trata de una locomotora de fabricación británica, marca “Avonside” clasificada como una 0-4-0T, siendo también clasificada como tanque.

The “Humberstone” locomotive is a small locomotive used to carry out maneuvers in the yards of the railway stations, as in this case in Alto de Caleta.

ste es el tercer tipo de locomotora utilizado por el ferrocarril de Agua Santa. Se trata de una locomotora tanque del fabricante británico “Avonside” y cuya clasificación ferroviaria es 0-6-2.En este caso los estanques de agua se encuentran a ambos lados de la caldera y el estanque del petróleo en la parte posterior de la cabina de mando.

Es grande y más potente que las Baldwin; el ferrocarril conto con 6 de estas que fueron fabricadas en los años 1894-5.

This is the third type of locomotive used by the Agua Santa Railway. It is a tank locomotive of the British manufacturer “Avonside” and whose railway classification is 0-6-2. In this case, the water tanks are on both sides of the boiler and the oil tank in the back part of the driving cabin. It is large and potent as the Baldwin, and the railway had 6 of these that were fabricated in the years 1894-5.

CALLE AGUA SANTA AGUA SANTA STREET

a Compañía de Salitres y Ferrocarril de Agua Santa había construido dos núcleos urbanos aparte del propio de la Oficina de Agua Santa; estos fueron Alto de Caleta que constituía el punto de término del Ferrocarril y el otro en la playa conocido como Caleta Buena, al que nos referiremos posteriormente. Aquí vemos la superficie utilizada por la población y algo de su equipamiento, lo que nos permite darnos cuenta de su importancia. Tanto en el Alto de Caleta como en Caleta Buena funcionaban oficinas públicas con un Sub Delegado en cada una de ellas y en cada distrito un juez y receptores judiciales.

de Salitres y Ferrocrril de Agua Santa had constructed two urban nuclei apart from the one of Oficina Agua Santa these were Alto de Caleta that constituted the terminal point of the railway and the other on the beach known as Caleta Buena, to which we shall refer after. Here we see the area used by the town and some of its equipment, which allows us to realize its importance. Both in the Alto and in Caleta Buena public Oficinas operated with a sub Delegate in each one of them and in each district a judge and judicial receivers.

l equipamiento industrial del Alto de Caleta fue muy importante. En esta maestranza del ferrocarril se ensamblaron todas las locomotoras que utilizó el ferrocarril a lo largo de sus 40 años de existencia y se repararon también. Contaba con todas las maquinas y herramientas posibles en la época como los tornos del primer plano. A la derecha de la foto, es posible distinguir un par de locomotoras. Todas las máquinas eran movidas por una transmisión central a través de poleas planas.

The industrial equipment of Alto de Caleta was very important. In this railway workshop all the locomotives that the railway used throughout its 40 years of existence were assembled and also repaired here.

It had all the machines and tools possible at the time, such as the lathes in the foreground. On the right of the photo it is possible to distinguish a pair of locomotives. All the machines were moved by a central transmission through flat pulleys.

Steam engine of simple expansion and that moves all the machines and tools of the workshop through a flat belt that can just be seen over the large wheel of spokes. This in turn, is coupled by its axis to the extreme with a counterweight that receives energy by the connecting rod from a steam piston.

a sección calderería era la encargada de fabricar piezas y partes de repuesto ya fuese para el ferrocarril como para dar conformidad a las necesidades de la Oficina Salitrera, del puerto de Caleta Buena y del andarivel que lo conectaba al Alto de Caleta. Fabricaban fundamentalmente estanques, ductos de latón, palas, palanganas, etc.

The boiler section was in charge of fabricating pieces and spare parts both for the railway or to cover the needs of the Nitrate Oficinas, of the port of Caleta Buena and of the cableway that connected it to Alto de Caleta. They fundamentally manufactured tanks, tin ducts, shovels, washbasins, etc.

SECCIÓN DE LAS FRAGUAS FORGE SECTION

a sección de las fraguas estaba encargada de fabricar mediante la fundición todas aquellas piezas que tuviesen una forma determinada y cuyo grosor y resistencia requería un tamaño mayor. Mediante las fraguas y golpes de martillo obtenían excelentes soldaduras; preparaban también los remaches con los que se estructuraban las bateas y los cachuchos.

The

forge section was responsible for fabricating through smelting all those pieces that had a certain shape and whose thickness and resistance required a greater size. With the forges and hammer strikes they obtained excellent welding, also prepared the rivets with which the vats and cachuchos were structured.

sta sección tenía a su cargo fabricar las carrocerías de los carros del ferrocarril, tanto de los carros de pasajeros como los de carga y de los carros de los andariveles. This section had the responsibility of fabricating the bodies of the railway cars, both of the passenger and cargo cars and of the cars of the cableways.

In the background of the photograph we see a pair of passenger cars being fabricated and on the right hand side, the wheels that they must have used. In the center of the photo we appreciate the frame or chassis of two or three cars in a kind of serial fabrication.

The

large amount of bags of nitrate in the foreground, that arrived from the interior waiting to be lowered at the port of Caleta Buena and the group of locomotives, give an account of the great activity in Alto de Caleta. The constructions that are observed behind the locomotive indicate how large that village became. This remarkable railway scene, captured in the evening shows almost all the rolling stock of the Company, with the “Humberstone” locomotive in the foreground and six of the Baldwin locomotives in front of the workshop or power house of the Railway.

are the stockpiling yards of the materials of the Company, where we see on the right some heaps of wood and cane from Ecuador. Behind this, bags with nitrate and in the upper right part, the railway workshop with some locomotives and in the same quadrant in the background there seems to be the structure or building from which the cableway operates.

na de las notables características de la Compañía de Salitres y Ferrocarril de Agua Santa fue haber utilizado un puerto, que para llegar a él, había que descender 720 metros, para lo que utilizaba 1250 metros de recorrido. En esta construcción se encontraban los mecanismos que regulaban el movimiento del andarivel como los tornos en done se enrollaban las cuerdas de acero que sostenían los carros en el ascenso como el descenso.

One of the notable characteristics of Compañìa de Salitre Ferrocarril de Agua Santa was to hae used a port, that to reach it, it wad necessary to descend 720 meters, for which it used a run of 1250 meters.

The mechanisms that regulated the movement of the cableway were in this construction, as well as the lathes where the steel ropes were wound that sustained the cars in the ascent and in the descent.

ANDARIVEL Y BAJADA DE UN CARRO CABLE WAY AND DESCENT OF A CAR

quí vemos el descenso de uno de los carros cargados con salitre. En la línea del lado vemos el cable de 1”3/4 de la línea de subida que hace de contrapeso mientras este va de bajada.

Diariamente se envían hacia arriba 25 toneladas de agua para suplir las necesidades de 300 a 400 mulas y ganado que están en corrales en la Cuesta. En un día de trabajo de 8 horas, pueden enviarse hacia abajo unas 200 toneladas de salitre. El peso de un carro completo casi nunca es mayor de 5.5 toneladas. El cable está probado para soportar una tensión máxima de 35 toneladas.

Here we see the descent of one of the cars loaded with nitrate. In the line at the side we see the cable of 1 ¾” of the ascending line that operates as a counterweight while it goes down. Daily 25 tons of water were sent up to supply the needs of 300 to 400 mules and cattle that are in corrals in the Slope. About 200 tons of nitrate can be sent down in one working day of 8 hours. The weight of a complete car almost never reached more than 5.5 tons.

The cable is tested to support a maximum tension of 35 tons.

n una plataforma en la parte superior de cada inclinación hay una rueda fija de rotación, dentro de una caseta, alrededor de la cual corre un cable de acero de 1-3/4 pulgadas cuyo lazo descansa entre los dientes que abren y cierran alternativamente, sujetando y liberando el cable, de manera que si éste se rompiera durante el ascenso o descenso de un carro, no puede desprenderse totalmente de la rueda. Los planos inclinados son bastante difíciles: el inferior varía de 45° a 53°, el del medio entre 38° a 43°, el superior un parejo 45°.

In the platform in the upper part of each inclination there is a fixed rotation wheel, around which a steel cable of 1 ¾ inches runs whose loop rests between the teeth that open and close alternatively, fixing and releasing the cable, so that if this is broken during the ascent or descent of a car, the Wheel cannot be detached completely. The inclined planes are quite difficult: the lower one varies from 45º to 53º, the one in the middle between 38º to 43º, the upper one an even 45º.

Hay varios piñones reductores por debajo y por encima que aparentemente servían para moderar la velocidad y controlar el movimiento. No tiene el dispositivo para dejar atrapado el cable en caso de rotura.

Similar to the above, differing from it as it presents a large area where to wind the cable that fastens the cars to the cableway; it is a big and strong structure to support the cars that go up and down. There are several reducer pinions underneath and on top that apparently were used to moderate the speed and control the movement. It does not have the device that leaves the cable trapped in case it breaks.

sta vista corresponde a la última sección, que corre directo hasta el plano.

El relato a continuación es de una persona que utilizo este andarivel y que así describe su experiencia de un viaje en el plano inclinado: "Se colocó una especie de peldaño en la parte trasera del carro que me estaba esperando y allí me paré. El guardafrenos se retiró a su garita y soltó el cable, el ayudante retiró el bloque desde el frente del carro y lo empujó hacia adelante. En otro momento había pasado sobre la orilla de la plataforma, y estaba bajando el precipicio. Las montañas rusas y deslizamientos en toboganes en mi país me habían preparado en cierta medida para este tipo de cosas, pero debo confesar que cuando me encontré inclinándome hacia adelante sobre mi estómago contra la parte de atrás del carro, y mirando Caleta Buena a través del ojo de un pájaro, y el océano más abajo, involuntariamente me afirmé fuertemente, y caí a una posición casi de rodillas. En unos cuantos segundos me recuperé, y realmente comencé a gozar de la sensación de precipitarme por el aire. Al llegar

abajo de la sección, se niveló el carro en una tornamesa cambiando en ángulo recto Señorita Ximena, se corrió hacia una segunda tornamesa y nuevamente se le colocó en forma paralela a su posición original, con el fin de iniciar el descenso de la segunda inclinación. Bajé por ahí, y el único ruido que marcaba nuestro avance era el sonido del cable batiéndose contra las guías de rodillo colocadas a intervalos cortos a lo largo de toda la línea entre los rieles.

En el segundo nivel se cambió nuevamente el carro como en la ocasión anterior. Esto se demoró uno o dos minutos, y ya era el atardecer cuando literalmente nos dispararon por el precipicio la última vez. ¡Uf! no podía dejar de exclamar, porque con 53° realmente parecía que el carro y yo íbamos a caer de cabeza al mar, el que apenas podía ver brillando por debajo de mí. Pero no era nada, como dicen los franceses, y unos pocos momentos después estaba en piso nivelado en un lugar abierto con un muelle que se extendía hacia el mar adelante de mí, y sacos de salitre apoyados contra las paredes de calamina de las bodegas a cada lado"

This view corresponds to the last section, that runs

directly to the flat part of the port.

The following is the story of a person who used this cableway and thus describes his experience of a trip in the inclined plane. “A kind of step was hitched on to the back of the car that was waiting for me, and on this I took my stand. The brakeman retired into his house and set the rope loose, the attendant laborer removed the block in front of the car and pushed it forward. Another moment and it had passed over the edge of the platform and was going down the cliff.

Switchback railways and toboggan slides at home had in some measure prepared me for this sort of thing, but I must confess that when I found myself leaning forward on my stomach against the back of the car, and taking a bird’s eye view of Caleta Buena and the ocean beyond, I involuntarily gripped hard and sank into an almost kneeling position. A few seconds recovered me and I began really to enjoy the sensation of rushing downwards through the air. On reaching the bottom of the section the car was leveled on a turn table shifted to right angles, run along on to a second turn table and again brought parallel to its original position in order to commence the descent of the second slope. Down this I went, the sound of the wire rope rattling over the roller guides placed at close intervals all along the line between the rails being the only sound marking our progress.

At the second level the car was again shifted as before. This took a minute or so, and it was all but dusk as we literally shot over the cliff for the last time. Ouf! I could not help ejaculating, for with a grade of fifty three, it really looked as if the car and I were going to take a header into the water I could just make out glittering below me. But it was nothing, as the French say and a few moments later I was on level ground on an open space with pier stretching seaward in front of me, and piled up rocks of nitrate backed by the corrugated iron walls of bodegas rising on each side.”

l igual que lo sucedido en la Oficina de Agua Santa, la casa habitada por los jefes o altos empleados tenía todas las posibles comodidades de la época. Hay también buenos sillones, mesas laterales y una buena cantidad de litografías de generoso tamaño, enmarcadas que penden de las cuatro murallas. El piano parece ser que fue acompañante obligado en estas casas de administración, dado el gusto por su ejecución, especialmente por las ramas femeninas de la familia, que también presentaban una disposición al canto. En definitiva, existió entre los administradores y jefes un nivel educacional superior, siendo adeptos a los goces del espíritu.

As was the case in Oficina de Agua Santa the house inhabited by the bosses or high executives had all the possible comforts of the times. There are also good armchairs, side tables and a large quantity of framed lithographs of generous size, that hung on the four walls. The piano seems to have been a compulsory companion in the administration houses, as the ladies of the family loved playing it and also had singing talents. Definitively there existed among the administrators and bosses a superior educational level, being adept to the enjoyments of the spirit.

randes cantidades de mercaderías se movilizaron por este puerto, no solo para la Oficina de Agua Santa, sino para todas aquellas que utilizaron el ferrocarril de la Compañía para exportar sus productos. Importar los insumos necesarios para la operación de estas otras Oficinas daba un gran movimiento al puerto de Caleta Buena. Lo que mayoritaria y cotidianamente se “subía” era forraje para los mulares y otros animales y el carbón galés para las calderas y que parece estar en sacos en este patio. La casa de dos pisos de la izquierda es la casa de la administración.

Large quantities of goods were moved by this port not only for Oficina de Agua Santa, but for all those who used the Railway of the Company to export its products. The consumables necessary for the operation of the other Oficinas gave great movement to the port of Caleta Buena. What was mostly and daily “taken up” was forage for the mules and other animals and Welsh coal for the boilers and which seem to be in bags in this yard. The two storey house of the left is the Administration house.

We can appreciate how narrow is the strip of the port of Caleta Buena and how close to the sea are the industrial constructions and houses, and see in addition 3 of the 4 wharves that the Company had.

VISTA GENERAL GENERAL VIEW

Obtaining drinking water was essential in this site; the water plant at the edge of the sea was a land mark due to its two tall and identical chimneys, visible from any place, no matter where you were.

It was the sea water plant which provided drinking water as well as ice to the town, to the railroad for its industrial procedures and its Alto de Caldera railway engines. The buildings on the slope of the hill were the sleeping quarters for the port employees. Further down, the custom house was in charge to verify the exportations and different commerce, such as grocery stores, pharmacy, clinic and the typical inn where the company´s workers ate and an hotel like Nestor Guevara´s Americano hotel.

L

a obtención de agua dulce para el consumo humano fue prioritario en esta localidad; la planta resacadora –ubicada sobre la orilla del mar- constituía una característica del lugar por el emplazamiento de la planta, por sus dos chimeneas altas y gemelas, visibles desde cualquier lugar de pueblo, por lejos que se estuviera. Era la planta resacadora de agua de mar que proveía de agua potable, y también de hielo, a toda la población, así como a la misma empresa ferroviaria para sus procesos industriales y para las locomotoras del Alto de Caleta.Los edificios en la ladera del cerro corresponden a las habitaciones de los empleados que se ocupaban de las tareas del puerto y del embarque del salitre. Más abajo se encontraban la aduana encargada de verificar las exportaciones y diversos comercios, como almacenes de abarrotes, boticas, consultorio médico y las típicas fondas donde se alimenta el personal de la Compañía y un hotel como el Hotel Americano de Néstor Guevara.

a” resacadora” con sus grandes calderas para evaporar y luego condensar el agua producida se encontraban al fondo de estas instalaciones; las bombas del primer plano absorbían el agua de mar con lo que se iniciaba el proceso.

Toda la maquinaria funcionaba con petróleo, el que se traía desde Talara en Perú.

tra importante estructura industrial del lugar lo constituían las bodegas para guardar el salitre que se encontraba en tránsito hacia los diversos mercados mundiales; estas estaban techadas con caña de Guayaquil, lo que contribuía a mantenerlas a una temperatura razonable, y dentro de ellas podían transitar los carros del andarivel, para ser descargados.

Another important industrial structure of the place is the warehouses for storing the nitrate that was in transit towards the different world markets; these were roofed with Guayaquil cane, which contributed to their maintenance at a reasonable temperature and within which the cars of the cableway could travel to be unloaded.

ntre los dos techos vemos las dos líneas del andarivel, que desembocan directamente en el muelle en donde se encontraba la romana para pesar los sacos antes de ser embarcados.

Este era el punto en donde el Gobierno ponía la máxima atención en todo el proceso salitrero ya que es aquí de donde sacaría los recursos para gobernar. Hay que recordar que en Chile de esa época, los barcos no podían atracar a los muelles y todo el carguío se hacía mediante lanchones.

Between the two roofs we see two lines of the cableway, which discharge directly in the wharf where the weighing machine was to weigh the bags before being shipped. This was the point where the government placed maximum attention in all the nitrate process as it was here where they had to obtain the resources to be able to govern. It must be recalled that in the Chile of those times, the ships could not moor in the wharves and all the loading was made by means of launches.

MUELLE DE DESEMBARQUE DISEMBARKING PIER

iferente al anterior por tener gran cantidad de elementos mecánico para desmbarcar objetos de gran tamaño y pesados y adamas debe adentrarse bastante en el mar para ser útil todo el tiempo y no depender de las mareas.

Cuenta con pescantes accionados a vapór para cumplir con su cometido, los que además pueden desplazarse sobre rieles. Es un muelle reforzado, que eventualmente se utiliza para tareas generales.

Different

from the previous one due to a great amount of mechanical elements to disembark big and heavy objects. It also had to be placed further away from the shore to be useful all day, not depending on the tides. It had steam cranes, shifting from one place to another by rails. It is a reinforced dock generally used for chores.

Pequeñas grúas fijas eran el complemento a las grúas móviles que se utilizaban en el muelle de desembarco.

sta vista general una vez más señala la importancia de este puerto, que en varios períodos exportó más que Pisagua. Los grandes muelles adentrándose en el mar construidos de fierro con gruesos tablones sobre la estructura permitieron manejar cargas de gran tonelaje como fueron piezas y partes del ferrocarril de la Compañía.

This general view once again indicates the importance of this port, which in various periods exported more than Pisagua The large wharves far into the sea constructed of iron with thick boards over the structure permitted handling cargoes of great tonnage such as the pieces and parts of the company’s Railway.

sta vista general del andarivel muestra el recorrido general de los planos inclinado cuyo recorrido era algo más de 1.270 metros para vencer los 726 metros de desnivel entre el puerto de Caleta Buena y el Alto de Caleta. Con los años y el aumento del trabajo, llegarían a ser cuatro los andariveles funcionando en este lugar.

This general view of the cableway shows the general run of the inclined planes that ran 1,270 meters to cover the 726 meters of elevation between the port of Caleta Buena and Alto de Caleta. With the passing of the years and the increase in the work, there were four cableways operating in that place.

uevamente vemos los andariveles y de fondo la gran bodega de salitre, de forma alargada por lo angosto del terreno. A la izquierda uno de los muelles y una variedad de lanchones, por medio de los cuales se cargaban los barcos.

Again we see the cableways and at the background the large nitrate warehouse, which was long and narrow in view of the narrowness of the land. On the left hand side of one of the wharves and a variety of launches, through which the ships were loaded.

ista desde algo más al sur que la anterior, con una lancha cargada con destino a alguno de los barcos surtos en la bahía. Quienes hacían esta faena eran altamente especializados y por lo general estaban agrupados en sindicatos que les permitía negociar mejor que los obreros de la pampa. Igualmente era un trabajo muy duro al tener que mover sacos de 130 kg, que luego fueron de 100 y más tarde 80 kg.

Viewed slightly south from the previous one, a barge loaded with cargo bound for one of the ships in the bay. The people who worked in these barges were highly specialized, generally belonging to a labor union, allowing them to get better wages than workers in the pampas. Nevertheless, it was hard work having to lift and carry a 130kg. sack, later on reducing it to 100kg, and finally to 80kg.
