MS Society Cirencester and South Cotswold is looking for new volunteers to join our team. We are a local group run entirely by volunteers with support from the national Multiple Sclerosis Society. We are always looking for extra assistance with the many aspects of the group’s activities, so no matter how little time you can spare, if you would like to help out we would love to hear from you! The group offers regular social opportunities for people affected by MS, and provides information about MS, from symptom management to employment issues. We produce a regular newsletter to keep you up to date with the latest developments in news and research, and inviting you to social events and activities. We have a number of opportunities available for volunteers who would like to help with, for example, administration, fundraising, organising socials, activities and events. Our volunteer roles are very flexible. We don’t have a local office so mainly volunteers can be based at home, and come together for meetings to discuss ideas and plans for activities and opportunities that will make a difference to people affected by MS. You might, for example, be coordinating a fundraising activity, organising a social, booking a venue, preparing mail-outs, answering enquiries, updating the webpage and more. We will offer a role that fits with your life and support you with resources and training to help you in your volunteering role. For more information or to chat through volunteering options, do call Karin Gray, Local Networks Officer, on 0208 438 0830 or email karin.gray@mssociety.org.uk.

Where were you born or bought up? Jim was raised in Sheffield and I was born and bought up in Bristol, but we have both lived abroad for much of our adult lives. We returned to Stroud in 2014 and fell in love with the place straight away. We both feel very at home in this area - there is a great mixture of fascinating history, gorgeous countryside and very friendly people. What did you do when you left school? I left school early and headed for London, determined to make my own way in life. I've had a wide range of jobs from potato picking on a farm, to being a full-time artist, to teaching politics at Universities. I've also had several of my own businesses related to the arts and publishing. When Jim left school he worked in France for a holiday company before going to University, and then returned to France to live. What led you to the business you have now? We met ten years ago and although we have had very different paths in life we have always shared a love of cars and motor sport.

21 We never dreamed we would be working in the auto trade, so we were delighted when the opportunity came up to train as vehicle paint technicians and own a ChipsAway franchise. So many of my creative skills are relevant to the work and Jim has a more engineering type brain, so it's a perfect profession for us to share. We had never worked together before, but it works very well - not all husband and wife teams could make it I think. Any interests or hobbies? Believe it or not we spend the little spare time we have with cars - usually watching them race. We enjoy Formula 1 and have been to Silverstone and Barcelona to watch Grand Prix's, but there is something special about watching classic cars racing around local tracks - we recently saw pre 1969 Jaguars racing around Castle Combe, which was a real thrill. I still keep up with my art - when I get the chance I wander to the far end of our workshop to my easel to paint. Plans for the future? We are very excited to be taking on our first employee in coming months. We hope this will help to provide a better service for customers, as demand is so high we are often booked up several weeks ahead.

It's going to be fun watching ChipsAway grow in the area - we have already met so many great customers.

All about Turkish Baths by Zoe Warner of VM Organic

When it comes to relaxing or unwinding in a spa, then plenty of people will think of the Turkish Baths. But how much do we know about where they came from? What are the benefits of this particular kind of spa treatment, and is there a way that you can try I tout from the comfort of your own home? The history of Turkish Baths Whilst Turkish Baths are a popular spa treatment now, they are actually a historical tradition that dates back to before the Turks settled in Anatolia. Once they found themselves in Anatolia, their own approach to Turkish Baths were then combined with Roman and Byzantine baths, to create the Turkish Bath that we know and love today. What are Turkish Baths? A Turkish bath is a gently heated room that is tiled throughout. It also features a “tummy stone in the centre, which is a heated marble slab. Those visiting the Hammam will lie on this slab, and be treated to exfoliation, massage and a quick wash off using hot water.. What are the benefits? There are a number of great reasons why you might want to try out a Turkish Bath for yourself. The first has to be that it is a great way to unwind and relax, particularly if you are feeling stressful about life. It improves circulation and opens up the pores within your skin, which means that you can properly clean and moisturise your skin, leaving it feeling fantastic. Finally, the heat within the room will help your body to expel a variety of toxins that can build up over time, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. How to try this experience out at home The main thing that you need in order to create your very own Turkish Bath is a shower. Once you have this, then you are well on your way to having your own spa treatment. All you need to do is turn the shower up nice and warm, and stand in there for a good 10 minutes or so. You want to bathroom to be nice and steamy, which will really help to open up your pores. Once you are feeling warm, you will need to grab an exfoliating mitt and give your body a good old scrub. You should try to use long strokes, and if you can you should aim to be scrubbing in the direction of your heart, which can improve circulation. If you are scrubbing right, then you should see dead skin forming on your skin. After you have given yourself a scrub, use the warm water and a flannel to wash away all that dead skin, and then apply some gloriously scented cream, such as rose or lavender, to really give you a treat! So, now you know. Whilst you can enjoy a Turkish Bath in a spa, you can also enjoy it at home too! www.vmorganic.life

! What the last 5 Years in Practice has taught us

Most people think, when they have an issue like Anxiety, Depression, Anger, PTSD, or Fear and any other unhelpful mental disposition for that matter, that they must take some action in order to repair the damage. But modern understandings of the mind tell us that this is seldom true. Everybody is inherently capable of changing their experience of life. However, this is not achieved by adding a new branch to the ‘tree of thought’, rather by pruning away the thoughts, which create and fuel the existence of such issues in the first place. When we go in for Positive Thoughts, Interactions, and Actions, then we remove the cause of the issue. We go back to a natural state that underpins our existence. This is the place inherent in us that exists underneath the problem thinking, and to which we return when we realise we have a choice. Meanwhile, increased motivation in the form of the neurotransmitter ‘Serotonin’ sets up our physiology for further feelings of positivity, which result in mentally healthier behaviour. This does not require any complicated procedures, just a person’s own resources. There are many ways to internalise the realisations that lead to a positive and confident outlook on life. A very noteworthy example that we use is hypnosis. If you’re unsure what this is like, hypnotherapy’s not about messing with your head. This is what some of our clients have said about their experiences: Carl – It’s just an overall great experience and if anybody has an opportunity to do, it they should. Simon – You will think with a different perspective on life and you will have a more positive outcome of anything you do. Karen - Initially it was really just relaxing and sort of listening and letting yourself go. I didn’t ever feel out of control, or “away with the fairies”. Aurelie – Don’t expect hypnosis to be as you’d imagine on TV. Hypnotherapy can give you the inner strength that you are looking for in your life. It’s done this for me, and for many other friends and people that I know. Marie – Do it! It’s amazing. I feel like I’m always going to be okay. I’m so grateful, I can’t say it enough really.

Testimonial from Victoria Smart of Tidy homes You publication has done me so well and I have had so many clients through it that it’s definitely been worth while. I’m just up to a point now where I have more work than employees - which is great - but I feel I need to stop advertising at least for the time being…just so I can catch up with myself! Many thanks though for all your help…having been a start up company this time last year I couldn’t have done what I have done over the last 12 months without publications such as yours - so thank you.
