26 Welcome to our June/July edition, we really are into Summer now! This is reflected in the feature on our centre pages ‘The earth is singing’ and I do hope you enjoy reading it. Please always feel free to email us your comments! Summer is always a better time to get out and about, and I’m sure the sunnier weather makes us all feel more sociable! On page 20 we have an article from the wonderful people at Changes Welcome who are encouraging us all to make new connections whilst enhancing the ones we have. That can only be a good thing! For all the gardeners out there, Garden View (page 24) gives us some welcome tips on hardy annuals. Summer in the garden, what could be better? Catherine Dixon Editor

Quotes Worth Quoting

I’ve written seventeen novels and I’ve found that fiction can’t keep up with real life. (John Grisham, writer) Drinking is the only thing you don’t get better at the more you do. (J. R. Moehringer, writer) It’s only discontent that makes us get out of bed. (Hugh Laurie, actor and comedian). Celebrate what you’ve accomplished, but raise the bar a little each time you succeed. (Mia Hamm, Sportswoman) Ten years ago, we’d happily queue in a bank to get £50. I should like to put in a recommendation for a company that I found advertised in the Five Valleys Directory. It is Barden Clean, a carpet and upholstery cleaning company. Thy did an excellent job, very reasonably priced, and highly professional, visiting first to give an accurate price, and I have already recommended them to others. Sally Goodman (Painswick)

IS IT REALLY WORTH HAVING YOUR SCRATCH REPAIRED? Here are a few thoughts to help you decide. Are you selling your car? A scuffed car might also give the impression that it has been mechanically neglected too - even if that’s not true. Always balance the value of your car with the cost of a repair. If the damage is ruining your enjoyment you might want to consider a repair. It’s amazing how many people reverse into their own gateposts in their brand new pride and joy car. Having spent thousands on their cherished asset, many of our customers feel a few hundred more to put right a small mistake usually worth it. Prioritise broken paintwork on metal - which is generally anywhere except your front and rear bumpers (which are usually plastic). Left untouched, rust can set in to damaged steel panels and once corrosion takes hold, it is costly and needs a specialist to repair. In worst case scenarios it can lead to MOT failures. If you are returning a car at the end of it’s lease, it is worth getting estimates for any body work and alloy wheel repairs. You might ask your lease company for a “Schedule of Charges” to check whether their charges are more than the cost of a repair, so you can weigh up whether it is worth doing. Do you use your car for business? Although I don’t, people may judge your professional standards by the state of your vehicle. When not to get the work done? Don’t book in a repair if you car is about to go for an MOT and you suspect it has problems. There is no point in a great looking car, if you can’t drive it anywhere! Most people wouldn’t fix damage if the repair costs more than the car is worth, but that said, we have a few customers who love their cars so much, and have grown attached to them, so they feel it is worth it.

Both me and my husband Jim are always on hand to offer free guidance and estimates. Call us on 07535521198. Caroline from Chipsaway

DO I NEED A NEW WEBSITE? How do you know when you need a new website design? Here are some important pointers that may help you decide  The design no longer reflects your business When new, your site showcased your business perfectly - but now you’ve moved on.

 Your site doesn’t work on phones or tablets More customers will now visit your web site on their phone or tablet than their desktop. Does your current web site display properly on them?  It’s not listed highly on Google or Bing Imagine looking for a local business that you know exists but being unable to find it. Or looking for goods or a service and your business is not on the list. Modern sites are better for good search results.  You prefer your competitors’ websites Have all your competitors updated their sites but you keep putting it off? Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. What will they think when they see your old site alongside your rivals new?  Your current website Is slow & not user-friendly If your website takes an age to load you’ll lose potential customers. Visitors are accustomed to fast load speed, intuitive navigation and sleek design that clearly communicates your business offering.

THE EARTH IS SINGING

‘Every seed is awakened and so is all animal life. It is through this mysterious power that we too have our being and we therefore yield to our animal neighbours the same right as ourselves to inhabit this land’. Sitting Bull The North American Indians can teach us much about how to co-exist with animals. What a joy it is to welcome the cows back to Minchinhampton and Rodborough Common! They are an iconic symbol of summer’s awakening in the Five Valleys. They certainly raise a smile as they lumber across the golf courses and negotiate cars as they stop the traffic to cross the road. These cattle are masterful and powerful. The vast majority of people appreciate the presence of the cows and the job they do in preserving the flora and the soil. One or two people are in too much of a hurry, their blood pressure rising and sadly showing an inability to appreciate the beauty and mystery around them. What can they be doing that is more important than adhering to a safe speed limit? It is a mystery how these cows adapt. Cows, if they are lucky, live in enclosed fields. What must they make of cars, buses, lorries, radio controlled aircraft, and kites? The golfers are exercising, but not too much. The cows take all of this in their stride, have no qualms about sitting on the green; stopping for a scratch or a sniff in the middle of the road while the curious poke their heads through the car window for a closer look. Perhaps the real celebrity is the donkey who must love his summer pasture. He most definitely thinks he is a horse but with attitude. He can often be seen hanging around the ice cream van. Meanwhile, there are other joyous stirrings in the countryside. By the end of May, the gardens, hedgerows and woodlands are bursting with their riches. Ample food supplies for people, animals, birds and insects. By June the badger cubs are spending more time outside their setts and getting ready to seek their own food. Fox cubs will be out and about under the watchful eyes of adults. If you see what appears to be an abandoned cub, wait awhile as the adult will likely be close. By July, the foxes will be leaving their earth and living above ground. Deer calves are born a little later and so make their debut a little after the fox and badger neighbours. Birds are now fledging from the hedgerows and their nest boxes and beginning the process of spreading their wings.

The earth is singing and it is great to take every opportunity to experience it at first hand. Those who have difficulty in getting out seem not to be able to get enough of Spring Watch and Countryfile. Such programmes can often portray a sanitised version of reality however. Finally, with the Climate Crisis school strikes and Extinction Rebellion, there is a recognition that the countryside will not be as it is forever. Human activity is depleting resources, damaging the atmosphere and in turn displacing people and animals from their homelands. May, June and July are times in the countryside when the earth’s singing reaches a crescendo. From then onwards, the dark forces gather. The hunting season begins and the animals so carefully nurtured in the spring have to fight for their lives. Foxes and deer are hunted in the name of ‘sport’. Badgers are killed by Government edict and the expectation is that up to 40,000 badgers may be killed in 2019. In 2017, when thousands of badgers were killed, in the same year ‘approximately 60% of the 32,000 cattle compulsorily killed for bovine TB control reasons in England, as skin test reactors, did not have lesions of TB on post mortem and were negative on bacteriological culture where performed’. (Source: Parliamentary Written Question HL15458). This indicates so much unnecessary killing and far too little attention given to using effective testing! So while the earth is singing, lets raise a note by way of a shout out for those whose protests led to the ripping down of netting to prevent birds nesting; to those who have the courage to monitor hunts to ensure that no illegal hunting takes place; those who walk peacefully to protect wounded badgers; those active groups which protect their chosen species be they hedgehogs, hares, rabbits, pheasants or insects; to the Extinction Rebellion folk and to the children who will keep our attention on the fact that we are abusing our environment to the point of destruction and our wildlife to the point of extinction. Life is full of contradictions and we all have to get our heads straight on these issues, but every small individual action can make a massive difference. Together we can be greater than the sum of our parts. We can learn from the indigenous Indians. Listen and watch carefully for the singing.

Hypnotherapy & Coaching

What’s the most important relationship in your life?

Do you have relationship goals? Are the relationships you have as positive and supportive as they can possibly be? Are you completely satisfied with the relationships you have or are you just making do? This is something that concerns everyone. All of us need a little extra help and guidance sometimes. Wouldn’t it be great to have a friendly and supportive space where you could not only make great new connections but also learn about enhancing your relationships at the same time. Somewhere you can come and connect, check in and tune up the most important relationships in your life - including the relationship you have with yourself. That’s the idea behind IntoU, a new collaboration between myself, Liane Ulbricht-Kazan at Changes Welcome Hypnotherapy & Coaching and John Field at RapportTech. Between us, we have over 20 years experience of working with people on relationships 1-2-1 or in groups. We’ve created a series of regular evening workshops to enable people to connect and learn at the same time. The idea comes from John completing Open University qualifications decades ago when he realised many students signed up to the OU just to meet people and their studies were secondary. With the advent of Facebook and MeetUp it’s become increasingly easy to connect with people. Paradoxically more and more people struggle with relationships in real life (IRL in internet jargon). Division is rife and the enjoyment and appreciation of difference is on the wane. It’s become more important to have new ways to connect and learn about how to create and maintain healthy relationships than ever. IntoU (Liane and John) will be running two pilot Evening Workshops in Cheltenham on the 3 & 17 July*. We’d love you to come and join us and these events are open to anyone 30+. To find out more go to www.intou.co.uk/evening-events. Book early to ensure your place and get the discounted price of £10. *More workshops will follow throughout Gloucestershire from September.

Yoga Don’t just do something...sit there!

Is there anyone left on earth who doesn’t know that if we want to be healthy we need to exercise? Exercise strengthens our heart, lungs and bones; increases our mobility and flexibility; burns calories, improves mood, sleep and memory and infuses us with energy. So after the excesses of Xmas, lets put exercise at the top of our New Year’s resolutions list. Remember exercise should be fun! Forget slogging away in a sweaty gym (unless that’s your thing). Why not try something completely different in 2009, like yoga? Developed more than 5000 years ago in India, Hatha Yoga is the most common form in the west. It involves physical posture work (asanas) and deep breathing (pranayamas), in preparation for meditation (dhyana), when the mind is quiet and focused on a single object, sound or chant. The exercises stretch and flex the spine and the joints, strengthen muscles and bones, tone up the internal organs and stimulate circulation, digestion and the nervous system. In the Sanskrit language yoga means union, harmony and balance. It results in body-awareness, because it calms the mind, while bringing vitality, strength, and flexibility to the body. After practising yoga you will become more aware of how you stand, sit and walk and how you cope in stressful situations. Yoga is a safe

and relaxing form of exercise that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or ability. It is gentle and non-competitive. Don’t think you have to be a contortionist and tie yourself up into impossible positions like some super fit celebrities. Once you’re in a posture, you breathe and relax into it and only do as much as your body will let you. Yoga is suitable for almost anyone, though if you have health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, a back or neck injury or have undergone recent surgery, then you should consult your doctor before embarking on any new exercise regime. There are many forms of Hatha Yoga to suit all levels of fitness. Ananda and Iyengar Yoga are good types to start with, but there are more vigorous forms like Ashtanga and Bikram Yoga for those who like a challenge. You’ll find information about your nearest beginner’s yoga class from The British Wheel of Yoga, a registered charity and the largest yoga organisation in the country. Loose clothing and a non-slip mat are all you need to get started. If you want to improve your stamina, strength, flexibility, posture, and cope better with stress, enrol in a yoga class and you’ll have taken the first step into an activity you can enjoy for many years. You might even extend those years considerably!

Garden View This month - Hardy annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t.

the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant.

In fact the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds.

If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms so he obviously knew a thing or two about it.

Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, friedegg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers.

If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist).

It’s an old cottage garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.

Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk past the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section.. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot .. and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year.

Hot Stone Therapy Relax with a Hot Stone Therapy massage

. The benefits of applying hot and cold stones to the body for therapeutic reasons have been recognised for many centuries. The ancient Chinese and native Americans both used this technique to improve their sense of well-being. These days, Hot Stone Therapy is growing in popularity in our spas and health and beauty parlours. It incorporates all the benefits of massage with the added bonus of the stones helping to boost your circulation, release tension, relax you and give you energy. It is believed to relieve the symptoms of those suffering with muscular pain; back pain; stress; insomnia; depression and poor circulation. Part of the secret lies in the use of both hot and cold stones. Direct heat from the hot stones relaxes the muscles and expands the blood vessels, allowing for a more intense massage. The stones are coated in fragrant oils to add to your sense of well-being. The cool stones constrict the blood vessels and wake up the nervous system. This combination encourages the increase of lymph flow and natural detox in the body.

savour the calming effects to the max. Before your treatment begins, your therapist will ask you about your medical history so she can choose the right products for you. It is important to tell her if you are pregnant.

When you are ready and comfortable your therapist will place the warmed and oiled stones on different acupressure points around your body, even placing tiny ones between your toes. Expect to drift off somewhere lovely at this point! Don’t be afraid to say if the stones are too hot for you. She will then use a variety of strokes and techniques, using both her hands and the stones, to massage your muscles. The massage may be quite intense but will not be painful. This therapy seems to reach deeper without the need to apply any more pressure. Your therapist will use both hot basalt stones and cold marble stones alternately. You may be so relaxed that you’ll have difficulty distinguishing between stones and hands. Some people are reported to experience a spiritual dimension to this treatment, receiving a sense of healing from a part of the earth. Your treatment will last for about an hour, by which time your aches and worries will have melted away. It’s important that you take time to enjoy the afterglow once your therapy is finished. Some people have reported seeing bright colours when they close their eyes, others simply feel blissed out. Remember to re-hydrate yourself with plenty of water to sip.

So, let’s get on with your treatment! Check with your therapist beforehand regarding what to wear for this treatment. She will be an expert in preserving your modesty. Make sure you are not in a rush before or after as you need to

A Peek into the Past June 1215 - The Magna Carta When King Richard the Lionheart died, his brother, John, took over the throne of England. King John’s rule was characterised by failure. Chiefly, he quarrelled with the Pope and lost an expensive war with France. In order to raise money he sold off church offices and imposed heavy taxes on the nobility. The Bishops were furious and called for action. The Barons took up arms, but instead of a civil war they used their position and power to draught the Magna Carta, which they forced King John to sign.

The Magna Carta was essentially a peace treaty between King John and his Barons. It guaranteed that the king would respect the feudal rights and privileges of the nobility; uphold the freedom of the church and maintain the nation’s laws. It put a limit on the king’s power and ensured that he too, would have to obey the law. It also stated that no man could be punished except by the lawful action of his peers. Eventually this would become trial by jury. Thus the Magna Carta is one of the cornerstones in the development of British democracy.
