3 To me this is a lovely time of the year but I know not everyone would agree. I love the changing colours and the crisp mornings and also the chance to curl up in front of a roaring fire in the evenings with a glass of wine. There are others who just see this as the time before a hard cold winter approaches and the difficulty in getting out of bed on dark mornings only to travel home again when it’s also dark! Luckily none of us have to travel far in this area for leisure pursuits or shopping as we are surrounded by a wealth of local services and beautiful countryside so let’s make the most of it and also keep our local businesses thriving by supporting them whenever we can. Trick or Treat Suki North takes a look at a not-so-American tradition ‘Trick or treat’ is a source of great fun for many children and adults, but alarms and scares some people, especially the elderly. The press love to publish postHalloween horror stories about hoodies ‘demanding money with menace’. The truth is that most children are out for fun and delighted to receive a few sweets. However it’s not unheard of for some to be unpleasant. ‘Tricks’ can be threatening with eggs, stones and worse thrown at windows and doors. If you feel threatened by unruly groups of ‘trick or treaters’, report them to the police. Before the 1980’s, the phrase “trick or treat” was relatively unknown in the UK. However, it’s not really an American import. ‘Trick or treat’ actually originates from a combination of two traditions: an early European Christian custom called Souling and the Scottish practice of Guising. Souling took place on All Saints’ Day, 1st November. Poor Christians walked from village to village begging for ‘soul cakes’, small currant-filled pieces of bread. In return for the food, prayers were said on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors on All Souls’ Day, 2nd November. Guising, short for disguising, is an ancient Scottish tradition. Groups of children dressed up to visit and entertain their neighbours by singing, dancing, reciting poems or playing music. In return they were rewarded with sweets or coins. Does Halloween conjure up fun or fear in your home? In many states in America, certain rules must be adhered to while ‘trick or treating’. Perhaps we should adopt them here too.

The Unwritten Rules of Trick or Treat (And yes we know we’ve written them down!) Children only go out between 6pm and 8pm and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Only visit houses which display visible Halloween decorations. Not everyone welcomes trick or treaters, Enjoy yourself but respect other people’s right not to get involved. As a house holder, if you don’t want to join in, turn your outside light off so the children know not to bother you. If you do want to play, keep your light on and place a jack-o-lantern or other decorations in view. Have plenty of prewrapped sweets near your door. Small children enjoy the excitement of a night-time fancy dress expedition. Most fun can be had by pre-planning. Visit your neighbours beforehand and get a small group of youngsters together. Organise a route visiting only homes where the children will be welcomed.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Put your hands up for people with hearing loss in Gloucestershire On Friday 6th November local charity, Gloucestershire Deaf Association (GDA) will be hosting their first Auction of Promises to raise funds which are vital to sustain GDA's award-winning charitable work for Deaf and Deaf Blind children and adults in Gloucestershire. The aim is to raise at least £10,000 for a wide variety of projects including our listening aid equipment advice and support and hearing aid maintenance. GDA’s 'Hands Up' Promises Auction' will be hosted by Stroud Auctions at their Auction Rooms, Stroud from 6.00pm. Already the event has attracted a number of local supporters donating items to the auction. Bidders will be able to fight for the chance to get their hands on lots including a four hour cookery session with the Pyromaniac Chef, a signed Gloucestershire County Cricket Club shirt, a round of golf for four people at Cirencester Golf Club plus much more. GDA is Gloucestershire’s only charity providing frontline services and support for people living with all levels of hearing loss. GDA supports over 3,000 children and adults across the county by enabling them to live confidently with their deafness. As well as inviting people to participate in the auction, GDA is also inviting people to support the appeal to reach the £10,000 goal by donating what they can. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via http://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/gda/handsup. The full auction catalogue will be publicised widely at least two weeks prior to the auction as well as being exhibited on the GDA and Stroud Auction websites. For more information about the event please contact GDA on 01452 372999 or email admin@glosdeaf.org.uk.

Once you’ve seen our ‘home from home’ approach and enjoyed the views over the beautiful valley of Painswick, we believe your choice will become easier. - The Battle of October 1066

A Peek into the Past

On October 14th, 1066, King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, was defeated by the Norman forces of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. According to legend, at the end of a bloody, allday battle, Harold was shot in the eye with an arrow and killed and his forces were destroyed. Just over two weeks earlier, William, the duke of Normandy, had invaded England, claiming his right to the English throne. According to Norman historians, Edward the Confessor, the childless English king, had promised to make his cousin William his heir. On his deathbed, however, Edward changed his mind and granted the kingdom to Harold Godwine, head of the leading noble family in England.

Hastings In January 1066, King Edward died, and Harold Godwine was proclaimed King Harold II. William immediately countered his claim.

On September 28, 1066, William landed in England with approximately 7000 troops and cavalry. He seized the town of Pevensey then marched to Hastings, where he paused to organize his forces. On October 13, Harold arrived near Hastings with his army, and the next day William led his forces out to give battle. After his victory, William marched on London and received the city's submission. On Christmas Day, 1066, he was crowned the first Norman king of England and the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history came to an end.

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster

A little time spent in the garden in October will pay dividends come spring time. Here are some tips for jobs to do during those last few mild days of the year, while plants are dormant and the soil is still warm. Stand back and think about which branches help give the plant its shape. Use those branches to give the plant the shape you want. Remove overgrown and smaller branches, as well as any which are dead or diseased. Always cut with sharp secateurs, just above a “node” (the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another). Plant drifts of daffodil, tulip and bluebell bulbs to guarantee a spring show of colour. October is also a perfect time to relocate any plants, as well as to introduce fruit trees. From pears to plums and apples to apricots – there is a fruiting plant to suit whatever pot or plot you have. Why not try something new! Give your garden sheds, fences and furniture some care and attention before the colder months arrive. Check for signs of damage, rot and rust, treating each as you go with specialist products. Painting wood with preservative will help extend its life. Why not choose a new colour such as blue or green, and give your garden a weekend make-over? Cut back dead plant stalks and sweep up fallen leaves to avoid allowing diseases to over-winter. Alternatively, pile them into one designated area to make your own little wildlife haven. Also, raise your pots up off the ground on bricks or ‘pot feet’ to avoid water-logging and frost damage.

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind Getting on top of Grief This month’s guide looks at grief. No topic better demonstrates the fact that, regardless of how well we are doing in life, things can get the better of us. And it’s not a matter of if, but when. Although grief affects us all at some stage, many people endure it’s negative effects for many years longer than is necessary. So, if you think of grief as a process that people go through, then it is certainly useful to progress through, and continue enjoying life as soon as possible. But the thoughts associated with grief can be very powerful. They include guilt, anger, remorse, sorrow, to name a few, and affect the happiest amongst us. Here it’s useful to remember that every negative thought that we have is transformed into anxiety. This anxiety in turn adds to life’s stresses and strains, causing primitive reactions in the brain, which are not conducive to again feeling happy and content. If we are not careful, we may enter into a negative self-sustaining cycle of stress, anxiety, and even depression and anxiety, which may need some extra help to shift. So we have to get back into doing, acting and thinking in a positive way, because when we do we trigger the physiological reactions required to again feel positive, optimistic, happy and content. It’s imperative for us to be able to recall our loved ones and at the same time have the ability to accept our loss. The overwhelming emotions, which grief generates, can be brought in check. For many the turning point will be when they decide enough is enough, I should be doing better. You are probably thinking of grief as the loss of someone close. But it’s not just the loss of someone you care about that we are talking about here. Things like relationship breakdown, divorce, and even losing a prized possession like a family home can instigate the mourning process. One great way to help get over a loss is to go and see a Hypnotherapist. As soon as people become aware of their thoughts, and make a firm decision about the direction in which they want to go, then hypnosis can be a great way of aligning the conscious and subconscious mind towards taking the necessary steps to achieve a more worthwhile and desirable future.

Fall for Autumn

By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon When it comes to Autumn, there are generally two kinds of people. One group of people sees it as the "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" and the other sees it as the start of the long hard slog into winter. The latter can take comfort from the fact that there are ways to make Autumn more enjoyable. Invest in a sunrise alarm clock When days are longer, the rising sun starts to prod your body awake long before your alarm clock does. Even if you're never going to be a morning person, waking up to sunshine and bird song can be a whole lot more pleasant than waking up to darkness, cold and rain. You can't change the course of the sun but you can buy an alarm clock which simulates its action. Basically these clocks have a light which switches on some time before your alarm is due to sound. This is usually around 20 minutes to half an hour. The light gradually gets stronger, just like the dawn. Some offer extra features such as the sound of bird song. You can find it takes a few weeks to adapt to this and to appreciate the effect, but many people love them. Use a SAD lamp to cheer you up Sunrise alarms generally just use regular light to mimic the dawn. You can, however, also buy SAD therapy lamps, which actually mimic the nature of sunlight. These are totally different to the UV lamps and sun beds used in beauty salons and are completely safe to use as long as you follow the instructions. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so even if you have limited storage space, you can still give yourself a moraleboosting and safe round of sunshine each day to combat those Autumn (and Winter) blues. Stay focussed on taking care of your health When temperatures slide, it can be all too easy to let healthy intentions slide with them. Drinking plenty of water can turn into drinking plenty of caffeinated hot drinks. Walking can become hopping on a bus. Healthy eating can become succumbing to comfort food, like hot puddings. Autumn, however, is the time to get your body ready for Winter and all the cold and germs that season brings. Treats are fine in moderation, but overall, you should still be aiming to eat healthily and get plenty of exercise. If you don't fancy cold water then try fruit teas and if you're not a fan of them stick to decaffeinated hot drinks. Wrap up warm and get outdoors or if you really can't face that, keep up with your exercise indoors. Fill up on healthy and hot soups and stews and keep pudding sizes small. Remember to keep up with regular health care such as visiting a complementary therapist for treatments such as massage and reiki. These boost the body as well as the mind and can help you through the dark days of Autumn and the even darker days of Winter.

Zoe Warner is one of the few therapist throughout the whole UK to have made it to the finals of the Holistic therapist of the year run by the international Holistic Therapist Magazine. The magazine says there were so many therapist’s of such a high standard nominated this year that choosing finalists was a tough decision. The finals are to be held at the beauty and complementary therapy event of the year at Olympia in London in October. This will be the 5th award in the last 12 months that Zoe has been a finalist in winning many of them. Well done once again Zoe!

Naturopathy Prevention is better than cure - by Sue Blain

Naturopathy simply means ‘nature cure’. It is based on the principle that the body has an innate power to heal itself, often referred to as the vital force or chi, as in Chinese medicine. As Hippocrates, one of the early Naturopaths, said ‘The natural force within each one of us is the greatest healer of disease’. I also like the description of our bodies as being ‘selfcleansing, self-regulating and selfrepairing for self-preservation!’ If your life-style lacks the appropriate nutrition, fluids, exercise, relaxation, sleep, sunshine, fresh air and positive mental attitudes, then toxins build up, mainly due to overburdened digestive and elimination systems. Couple this with the stresses and strains of modern life and blockages are created in what should be the free-flowing vital force, and self-healing is inhibited. What we often call illness: fevers, coughing, sneezing, diarrhoea, sickness, acne, eczema, rashes, are just the body’s way of eliminating toxins and germs. If these acute symptoms are suppressed with too many medicines they don’t run their natural course and chronic illness may develop. It is surely better to discover the cause of the problem and treat that rather than just relieve the symptoms.

to spa towns to take the waters and later sea-bathing became fashionable. Now modern Naturopaths, like myself, use homeopathy, flower remedies, tissue salts and herbs, as well as dietary and lifestyle advice to assist the body in its self-healing role. It is considered an holistic therapy because the whole body is treated; the physical, mental and emotional aspects and the underlying causes of the symptoms are sought. For this reason chronic illnesses, such as asthma, eczema, arthritis, fatigue, depression, digestive and circulatory problems, benefit from Naturopathy.
