EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard. We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations. With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book. But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email davidp@severnprint.co.uk and let’s make your book a reality. www.severnprint.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Longfield fundraiser Gabby Cochrane, Longfield mascot Cuthbert the Cow and Gloucester and England rugby star Charlie Sharples supporting the Longfield Girls' Night Out Walk on 9th of September 2016.

Cherry & Whites player Charlie Sharples is urging women to bring out the bling to help people with life-limiting illnesses. The 26-year-old Gloucester Rugby winger is taking time out off his training schedule and role as a new dad to start off Longfield’s Girls’ Night Out walk. And he expects to be dazzled by the OTT dress code.

“I’m expecting more than an average Friday night out in Gloucester, I want to see lots of bling,” Charlie said. “I’m going to have to think about what to wear, I might look a bit boring in a Gloucester Rugby tracksuit.”

The Girls’ Night Out covers 10km with all the walkers setting off from Cirencester together at 9pmon Friday September 9, buoyed up by a pre-walk party. “It’s going to be a fun night, lots of banter and a good atmosphere so I hope loads of people will get behind it and give it their support,” Charlie said. Longfield staff and volunteers hope the OTT dress code will be taken to the max, lots of sparkles and sequins from eyeshadow down to shoes with a few tiaras to round everything off. The money raised enables Longfield to support people from across Gloucestershire who have life limiting illnesses. The Minchinhampton-based charity provides free care for more than 800 people a year and their families, including treatments such as reiki and art therapy. Charlie’s wife Rose has just had their first baby, Eloise, so Charlie will be taking a few hours out from being a dad to support the event. “I’m always happy to help charities out if I can and when it’s somewhere like Longfield it’s really nice because you know it’s going to have a positive impact on people around you and you can see the good work they do. I’ve lived in Gloucestershire for 16 years now so it’s nice to be able to do something that helps my community.” The Girls’ Night Out walk starts from Deer Park School, Cirencester at 9pm on Friday September 9. Entry costs £18 including a T-shirt, or £15 if you’re one of the first 300 to register. Entry is refunded if you raise more than £150 in sponsorship. Children aged 10 to 16 must walk with an adult. Get your mates together and your sixth place is free. Go to www.longfield.org.uk/Event/girls-night-out to register.

Drowning in Debt? Take positive steps before you get out of your depth

We’re so used to living with debt in Britain that we forget a change in circumstances might seriously affect our ability to pay it off. Government officials talk about debt from spending but the biggest causes are actually divorce, death, illness and redundancy. What do you do if you find yourself unable to make even the minimum payments on credit cards and loans? The first rule is DON’T PANIC! The second is DO SOMETHING! The problem will not go away on its own so take a deep breath, sit down with your partner, if you have one, and start to draw up an action plan. Check your benefits Claim everything to which you’re entitled. Are you covered? Did you take out insurance to cover mortgage payments in case of redundancy or health insurance in case of illness? If so, make a claim now. Prioritise Not all debts are created equal. Make sure you keep a roof over your head and that your electricity and gas supply won’t be cut off.

Don’t worry if it’s only a small amount. Most would rather receive a tiny regular payment than nothing. If a creditor resists Persist and ask to speak to someone more senior. They may be able to authorise your request. Keep all correspondence You might need it if things get tough. Be cautious with consolidation loans They may seem tempting but taking out a secured loan when you’re financially vulnerable is putting your house at risk. Take financial advice first. Beware Bankruptcy It can seem like a way out, a fresh start and for some people it is the right thing to do. But it is a formal procedure which has implications for your future credit rating. Also, because the information is in the public domain your friends, family and employers may find out. If it ends in court? Attend. If you don’t ,decisions will be made in your absence which you will have to honour.

Draw up a budget Go into detail and send it to your creditors.

Contact the Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) first . Take all your correspondence and personal budget with you. It will help the court to see how keen you are to sort the issue out.

Talk to your creditors Explain your situation. Refer to your budget and explain what you can afford to pay them

Debt isn’t the end of the world. You can sort out your finances and be on your way to a happier future.

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Yorkley, in the Royal Forest of Dean. As a child I moved around a lot, inhabiting houses in Thornbury (1 year) Mitcheldean, Parkend, Lydney. What did you do when you left school? I navigated factory life while waiting to join the Royal Navy, passing all entrance exams. I was given a 7 month wait so settled and never left. I travelled the world extensively, but changed direction several times. What led you into the business you have now? Unfortunately, five years ago I had a severe spinal defect diagnosed. After undergoing severe invasive spinal surgery, I found myself unable to walk for many months. My surgery was a complete failure, unfortunately exasperating my condition. I found a competent surgeon that put me back together as best he could. At this time, I considered my options, I realised I had two, I could feel sorry for myself or get motivated. I took the latter as my option and gathered traction. I had always written poetry, songs, short stories and even full novels as a child and into adult life. I decided to embark upon a career that concentrated on the written word. Painswick inspired the first John Parks story “The Painswick Conspiracy, The Conspiracy has a guide so readers can follow his route as he tries to survive, I can walk most of it so I know it will appeal to all ages and levels of ability.

19 Any interests or hobbies? Many and varied, they mainly focus on the most important element of my life, my family and grandchildren who keep me in the real world. This is the main area of where my free time is spent and who would not be happy with this? I love Painswick, Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds, I am proud to be English, having all of this beautiful countryside on the doorstep. I also love to write so the main part of my life is my interest. I love theatre, live music, comedy. What of your home life? My wife Debbie, who is also my illustrator, fully supports my work and has been a complete angel through my healing process as have my two sons Daniel & CJ. Debbie proof reads all of my work, keeps me balanced and informs me whether the work is good or indifferent in the most honest of ways, luckily she loves it all to date. Inhabitants of Painswick and Brockworth are used to seeing me walk around with my faithful friend Harry, a cross breed terrier, he is brilliant. As a family, we spend a lot of quality time together Plans for the future? The immediate future sees the sequel “The Painswick Chronicle” being published next year, it is currently in production. The third “The Painswick Enigma” is in writing. I have also written what I consider to be a beautiful human story called “The Art of Words” being released Aug 31st 2016. I have many other projects in various stages, I guess I need to prioritise but the Painswick novels with my favourite boy John Parks have consumed and gripped me, I hope they offer the same experience to readers. I hope to simply keep writing, then write some more, then write some more. My quest is to share stories that I manufacture in my mind and present in novels, I hope the readers enjoy them and that I can continue for the long term. I would like to thank everyone from family, to friends, villagers, the public and local businesses for the considerable positive support I have received. It is genuinely overwhelming, refreshing and stimulates me to continue.

22 Summer Garden Tips from Julie Dolphin at Miserden Nursery www.miserdennursery.co.uk

If you had asked me at the end of June how I was feeling about the weather this year, I probably would have had just one word to say. PANTS! Sorry to be so frank but when you are in the business of growing plants, it pays to have a bit of sunshine every now and again. If you remember, April was cold and June was well, plain grey. I thought the protestations about the miserable weather and on-and-off rain would never cease. Gardeners described their borders as "soggy wastelands" with roses all to frequently reduced to "brown mush". On the nursery, we waited patiently for our plants to bloom. We're 800ft above sea level so we're used to them being a tad behind those on the lower slopes of the Cotswolds but it felt like an age before they got into their stride. Thankfully, a sunny and warm July really helped and everything is now looking just as it should. Phew! At the time of writing, forecasters were predicting continued sunshine so it's worth thinking about injecting some colour into your borders for the latter part of this summer. There are lots of plants which look great right into autumn and here is our pick of some top-performing late-flowering perennials: Crocosmia With their spikes of lush green foliage topped with freesia-like flowers, crocosmias are some of the most eye-catching blooms in the border. That is certainly true of the popular cultivar 'Lucifer' which stands at well over a metre tall and has bright red flowers which blaze across the garden. There are cultivars in various shades of red, yellow and orange and there are shorter ones too for smaller spaces. Helenium With their daisy-like flowers in rich colours ranging from bronze-yellow through to orange and russet-red, heleniums are the jewels of the late summer border. This North American native loves the sun and will grow in any fertile soil as long as it moist but free-draining. Rudbeckia Also from the prairies and plains of North America, rudbeckias are the colour of sunshine and positively glow in the border. Grow them in full sun with a fertile, free-draining soil and they will repay you with a profusion of flowers excellent for cutting.

Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

23 Japanese anemone Stalwarts of the late border, these clump-forming plants have pretty single or double flowers in white or pink. Mature plants reach over a metre tall. Grow in sun or partial shade but ensure they don't get too wet in the winter. Verbena bonariensis This tall airy plant is a good partner for a wide variety of late-summer planting. Despite its height, I often use it at the front of a border where its slender stems blend with other foliage, leaving just its dainty purple flowers to dance above its mid-height companions. Butterflies love them! And don't forget, you can always perk up your garden with bedding plants. They're still available to buy and many will take you all the way to the frosts. Pop some in a pot and you can place the whole thing in the borders as a gap-filler.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind

Dentophobia can affect more than just your smile Do you run a mile at the thought of the dentists? Need to get some dental work done? High anxiety surrounds every dental appointment? Dental anxiety can easily be identified by its symptoms, which are in fact general symptoms of anxiety, which can also relate directly to the dental profession. If you get anxious about visiting the dentist, then you are certainly not alone. Studies show that 32% of people significant anxiety surrounding their appointment, and for 12% this is ‘extreme’. However, dentophobia is actually not as specific as you might think. If you have an acute fear response to any aspect of dentistry, then you may have dentophobia, and hypnosis can help you with your phobia. This might include a fear of needles, vomiting, pain, numbness, choking, anaesthetic, dental drills, embarrassment, authority, diagnosis. The list goes on… When any traumatic event occurs at a time of excessive stress, the subsequent reaction can be so strong that the memory is maintained as a survival template, or fear memory. Part of the brain known as the limbic system remains on permanent lookout, scanning the environment and comparing all incoming information with these templates. Such templates contain all the relevant information to safeguard against future similar threats or occurrences. The event itself along with other loosely associated aspects trigger a state of extreme alarm, Professional clinical hypnosis can be hugely effective at helping people with dentophobia. This is being proven time and time again though the scientific research within the field of neuroscience. It first uses the natural state of trance, combined with repetition, metaphor, and relaxation, in order to lower anxiety. A very effective technique called Rewind literally moves the fear memory from the limbic system to the higher cortex of the brain, where it will no longer act as a fear memory. Then, a technique called Reframe is used to provide the context for future positive responses. Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice Celebrates its Second Year

The Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice is proud to be celebrating its second birthday this mont highly successful launch in May 2014. The Practice continues to go from strength to strength with the two founding members Michèle Lazarus and Alex Brounger being joined this year by a third Hypnotherapist, Shaun Barker. Shaun was carefully selected from a number of interested hypnotherapists and was chosen for his commitment to high standards, enthusiasm and professionalism. Shaun became a hypnotherapist after a highly successful military career. Like Michèle and Alex, Shaun trained at the Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training School (CPHT) in Bristol and has achieved his Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) which is widely regarded as the gold standard qualification in hypnotherapy.

Shaun Barke

The Stroud Hypnotherapy Practice operates from the Cotswold Health Centre on George S centre of Stroud and provides the very best standards of hypnotherapy and psychotherap Practice was originally set up to ensure that clients could be confident of accessing the ver hypnotherapy has to offer by coming to one of their therapists.

It continues to achieve this aim whilst also working towards debu myths that surround hypnotherapy. Modern day hypnotherapy, a focused hypnotherapy in particular, uses the entirely natural state very powerful tool to help us learn helpful ways of thinking, takin positive interactions. In modern day hypnotherapy, hypnosis is ju to assist clients overcome issues or help them cope better with th are facing in their lives.

Michèle Lazarus said she has been very proud of the success of th particular the number of people the Practice has been able to hel Michèle Lazarus - founding years in so many different areas .

member of SHP

Practice owner, Alex Brounger, a Hypnotherapy Supervisor and Senior Lecturer for CPHT, reiterated the Practice’s commitment to the very highest standards of practice whilst also reinforcing the message that modern hypnotherapy is very different from the old fashioned stereotype: “modern hypnotherapy has a strong evidence base within neuroscience research and when used in the right way it can be enormously powerful in helping individuals make the changes they want or need to make in their lives.” All three hypnotherapists are members of the AfSFH, the NCH and the CNHC.
