Save our valley!

Do we want to lose this forever? Regretfully, four years on and we are still fighting to keep the lovely Slad valley intact for future generations. Any development on this land is totally unnecessary as Stroud District Council have now had their new Local Plan adopted, and have a 6.59 year housing allocation. This latest application would only provide approximately Six ‘affordable’ houses, but would destroy forever the valley from such vantage points as Swift’s Hill. This development would also destroy vital habitats for a number of species of bats and also impinges upon a key wildlife site. That is why we must keep fighting! Photograph by Roger Andrews

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind

Hypnotherapy can help overcome sleepless nights Hypnotherapy can help insomnia sufferers by dealing with underlying factors that contribute to the condition. Around a third of people suffer from some form of insomnia at some point in their lives, including difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night or waking up too early in the morning. The effects of prolonged sleeplessness can range from fatigue, lack of motivation, irritability, reduced problem solving skills, inability to cope with stress, reduced immunity and weight gain. Local Hypnotherapist Liane Ulbricht-Kazan explains “Anxiety is a common cause of insomnia, and of course worrying that you’re not sleeping only makes the problem worse. It’s not long before a vicious cycle sets in and the harder you try, the more elusive sleep becomes. It can be really debilitating and can seriously impair a person’s ability to function normally or enjoy life.” Practitioners in the field can help insomnia sufferers by addressing the underlying anxiety, which may for instance be caused by work, relationships, health or financial worries. Ruminating on problems serves to amplify their significance and even small issues can get out of proportion in the middle of a sleepless night. Hypnotherapists work with clients to alter their habitual responses to problems and develop more helpful coping strategies. By changing unwanted patterns of behaviour, clients’ anxiety levels reduce and sleep often improves naturally. Sleep is not only important as a means of rest. Arguably one of the most significant aspects is the process of REM (Rapid Eye Movement). REM is a hugely enervating process, which quite literally moves memories of the day from being an emotional memory to a narrative memory, where we then have control over them. This helps us to avoid worst case scenario thinking, cognitive function, and keeping a calm optimistic view of life, whilst not losing our temper! If you’d like to learn more about sleep within the context of your goals, aspirations, or life’s struggles, then get in touch today. We’d love to hear from you... “We’ve been offering full time clinical hypnotherapy within the Stroud & South Gloucestershire area for nearly 5 years. We’ve helped all kinds of lovely local people with these and similar issues, and would love to hear from you today.” Sam Little DSFH CNHC

16 The importance of an active brain You may just think that forgetfulness and memory loss is something that happens with age and that there is nothing you can do to improve it. The truth is that keeping your brain active throughout your life is the best way to ensure that it functions right up into old age. We have put together some of the very best ways to keep your grey matter ticking over; ensuring that you are bright and alert no matter your age. Puzzles and crosswords Puzzles and crosswords are ideal for giving your brain a good workout. Depending on the type of puzzle that you like to complete you will work out a different part of your brain. Crosswords will give the language and memory areas of your brain some exercise whilst jigsaw puzzles will flex the parietal lobes. Talking You might not realise it, but having a good discussion is a great way to work on your brain power. Whether you talk about something you have knowledge on or indulge in an area that you are not so sure about, you will be able to share your expertise as well as learn something new too. A new hobby Hobbies are not only great for mental wellbeing they are also great for the health of your brain too. Art, craft, singing, theatre or perhaps a new exercise; in learning these new skills you will be expanding your brain as well as being able to interact and socialise with new people too. A tricky dance or a new language Learning something new will get your brain ticking over. Whether this is a step heavy dance routine or Spanish, you will not only feel great to be expanding your knowledge but you will also have your brain working up a sweat too! Losing yourself in a good book Reading is one of the best forms of brain exercises that you can choose to do. One of the best ways to keep your brain active is to delve into a great book. Not only will a book ignite your imagination, the text will also challenge your brain and kick-start it into action. Get active Not only will exercise help with your health, but particular sports can help you to improve your co-ordination as well as keeping you feeling great too! Just by taking the time to indulge yourself in one of these activities once a week you will see an improve in your brain function. By combing several of them and completing them regularly you will be sure to be alert and ready for anything no matter your age. Article by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon. www.vanillamoon.biz

file o r P le s Peoperie Holme n ea Ch l C 2 es m l o H Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Zimbabwe in the early 80's, shortly after we moved to South Africa, where I grew up and finished school in my home town of Nigel, which was a small mining community. What did you do when you left school? When I finished school in 1998, I got a job in England as a live in house keeper in Moreton Valence. Then after that I worked in pubs and was co-running a pub in Gloucester, I also obtained my BII Licence. But In December 2001 I worked in Direct Line Insurance, then from that moved into Motor Legal Claims for RBS. What led you into the business you have now? Well as you can see I've had a variety in my working life, involving many aspects, but there's always been a continuity in all work fields, a continuity of cleaning, tidying up and house keeping, and it was my first real job. Cleaning gives me great satisfaction. I then got a part time job after coming out of redundancy and recovering from two operations, It was a cleaning job with a small cleaning company in Stroud. It seemed to spark a passion in me which soon enough inspired me to make a business of it myself and set my own standards for good, clean and fresh homes, which fits well with my surname Holmes, as if it's meant to be. Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

19 What has been your biggest achievement? Receiving a Directors Award for working Relations in Legal claims in 2009 and in 2010 I got a runner up for Chief Executive Award. Oh and also having a gorgeous little daughter Shiyan! Any interests or hobbies? I've always had a keen interest in Athletics and sport from a very young age, which led me to becoming a certified Assistant fitness instructor. Now I've found the ultimate rush, which is doing obstacle runs and courses like tough Cherie with daughter Shiynan mudder and Cotswold Warrior, which I've done several of now, and eventually want to go on TV to do UK Ninja Warrior. Other interests include vintage clothes and wonderful handbags ranging from rubix cubes to ladybirds and I also do like to travel and see the world. Plans for the future? My website for Holmes 2 clean will be going live in September 2016 and I'm already looking into employing someone, with interviews in progress, as I seem to be gaining a lot of clients. I've got a very high standard, I like to meet everyone's needs and getting the job done efficiently and thoroughly is my absolute priority. Also, to keep improving what I already know. So expanding, networking and creating local jobs which will help the company evolve and grow into a big success! Finally, I really would like to thank Shiyan, mum, pops, Laurence, all my clients and The Five Valleys Directory for all the help and support they have given me, I’d be lost without them. For more details of Holmes2Clean, please see Cherie’s advert on page 5

Make the Most of Your Wedding Day Photographer Photographs are the lasting memories of your wedding day and form a record of the most important day of your life. It is therefore important to make sure you use a well-qualified and experienced wedding photographer who can capture the atmosphere of the day and make you and your guests look their best. We’ve put together a checklist which will help make sure that you get the most out of your wedding photographer: 1. Start making arrangements for a wedding photographer well in advance so that you'd have plenty of time to choose the right person. Many good wedding photographers are booked a year ahead. 2. Before you choose a wedding photographer, it's important to sort out in your own mind what you expect from him/her. For example: What type of photographs would you like? Traditional studio shots? Classic posed shots before and after the ceremony? Or a more spontaneous approach? Or a combination? 3. Ask to see the photographer's previous work and check the following:   

Do you like the photographer's style? Did the photographer manage to capture the atmosphere of the day? Are the photographs of good technical quality? For example, are they in focus and are the colours sharp and clear? Do you like the photographer's lighting techniques?

4. If you're having a larger than average wedding, check if your wedding photographer will bring an assistant with him on the day. Sometimes a second pair of hands and eyes may be needed to save time. 5. If you are having a large group of children at the wedding, ask your photographer if he/she is experienced in working with children. 6. Ask how much time will be needed for family portraits so that you can allow for extra time between the wedding and the reception if necessary. 7. How will the photographs be previewed? Does your wedding photographer use slides, proofs or a computer to display the photos before compiling them into a wedding album 8. When will the wedding album be available? Does your wedding photographer provide a CD ROM of your wedding photos? If so, will there be an extra charge for it? You will be spending almost the entire day with your wedding photographer, so make sure he/she is someone you feel really comfortable with. Talk to friends, get some recommendations and then use our checklist as a useful guide to make sure you choose the right photographer who’ll not only do a great job on the day but will ensure that your memories are captured and look great for many years to come.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Fabulous Fabulous Ferns! Ferns! By Julie Dolphin of Miserden Nursery By Julie Dolphin of Miserden Nursery www.miserdennursery.co.uk Ferns may not produce a single bloom but they are no less fabulous because of it. After all, who needs flowers when you have stature and elegance in spades! Garden designers love them but in your average border ferns tend to be used as a final resort, the go-to plants when all else has failed in that difficult shady spot. Either that or they are used merely as a foil to other more prized plants in the border. But with their remarkable range of foliage, size and habit, ferns can be used in a variety of ways and be star performers in their own right. Not only do they add texture to shady areas, they can be used to dramatic effect as single specimens or in mass planting schemes. They can be upright, mounding or spreading and are effective in both naturalistic and formal settings. And because they are generally smaller at maturity than many ornamental plants, they are good for creating detail in smaller spaces, softening the edges of a path for instance. Colour comes into it too. We commonly think of ferns as green plants usually lending a calming lushness to a border, but there are also types with brilliantly coloured fronds in tones of silver, gold and copper. These can really shine out in a dark corner. Whether they are evergreen or deciduous, most hardy ferns are easy to grow. Mostly they will thrive in any moist, well-drained humus-rich soil. Some will tolerate sun but they are happiest in shade. Here are some for starters: Dryopteris affinis, the golden shield fern, is semi-evergreen and produces a thick crown with sturdy sprays of lush foliage, bright green when young and later rich in tone. Easy to grow in moist and lightly shaded sites, it will perform in full sun if given plenty of moisture. It's also tolerant of dry shade but will need watering regularly in the first season. 'Cristata' is a robust form, handsomely crested at the tips of the fronds which retain a bright, fresh appearance throughout the summer.

Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

25 Dryopteris erythrosora is a semi-evergreen fern much valued for its striking colour. Known as the Japanese shield fern, its fronds are coppery pink when young and slowly mature to dark green. It contrasts brilliantly with evergreen ferns. Polystichum setiferum is the soft shield fern, a large evergreen type with wide fans of soft, willowy fronds. Its cultivars are some of the most elegant of ferns and exceptionally tactile! Protect crowns from excessive winter wet. Athyrium niponicum var. pictum is known as the painted lady fern and is a pretty addition to any border. These plants are amongst the most colourful of garden ferns with creeping, deciduous silvery grey fronds which are infused with purple at the centre. Easy to grow as long as they have plenty of moisture and some shelter. The cultivar 'Silver Falls' is aptly named with arching fronds and shimmering silvery shades. Just a few to consider and there are many others! Far from boring shadefillers, they are fantastic plants and deserve a place In the garden where they can be allowed to shine.
