It’s a beautiful sunny day as I’m writing this and with the warm temperatures, hard to believe it’s now Autumn. Our short break away in Devon recently at a very ‘dog friendly’ hotel called the Deer Park, near Honiton was just wonderful. If ever you have the chance to visit there and take along your lovely four legged friends you will find it heaven for both dogs and humans. There is even a doggy menu! Back home we finally have a proper garden once again after being without one for the last 18 months and I can’t wait to get out there. It’s also National Tree Week coming up in November, (see page 20) which encourages us all to get out and plant a tree. No matter how small it’s a wonderful thing to do.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup If you’ve ever wondered what else you can do with a pumpkin other than make a Halloween Lantern, try our rich, golden, tasty soup.

Note: You’ll need a pumpkin which weighs about 1.5Kg for this recipe.

garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces.

Ingredients

Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it.

3-5 medium cloves garlic, unpeeled 1kg (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded Olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cumin Salt and pepper, to taste 1 litre (1 3/4 pints) vegetable or chicken stock Cream, for serving (optional) Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for serving (optional)

Method Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled

Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly. Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour. Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender. Serve the soup hot with cream and/or grated nutmeg/ chilli flakes if preferred.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind How to control Anger

Recognising angry and the feelings, which preceed anger hugely important. Because anger is generated within the brain, any effective anger control methods must also be brain based. Anger is felt in both the body and mind. It can adversely affect behavior beyond the ‘outburst’, as well as how we respond to the world and it to us! Anger is primary response to a perceived or actual threat(s). Rationally speaking, anger is normally not an appropriate response to the actual events, and always represents a loss of control, which is hard to regain once unleashed. Traditional advice includes counting to ten, or kicking a ball around etc. However, it can be extremely exhausting to ‘fight’ angry feelings especially when they‘ve already taken hold. It’s arguable who suffers most, the receiver or the instigator, but it’s clear that both parties have a lot to lose. Because anger is always stress related, the most effective way to control anger is to stay away from that tipping point by effectively reducing our stress. Anger is a response to stress. It originates from the primitive part of the brain. We each have a metaphorical “stress bucket” that gets filled the more we think negatively. When our stress bucket is full, the mind calls on the stress response and the primitive mind reacts with the fight or flight response. As a result we may begin operating from the primitive instead of the intellectual brain. Anger is an “emotional hijacking” that takes over and stops us from thinking calmly and clearly, so we need to regain our intellectual control to respond appropriately and optimistically to any given situation. To do this we need to operate form the intellectual part of the brain. Local brain based specialists and hypnotherapy providers Sam and Liane at Changes Welcome Hypnotherapy understand the causes of anger very scientificallyand can certianly heklp you to put your issues in context. They also have the tools to help you regain the level of inrellectual control that not only helps with anger, but which is also proven to be highly effective with all kinds of stress related issues. “We’ve been offering full time clinical hypnotherapy within the Stroud & South Gloucestershire area for nearly 5 years. We’ve helped all kinds of lovely local people with these and similar issues, and would love to hear from you today.” Sam Little DSFH CNHC

Stress - The good and the bad When you hear the word stress you are likely to instantly think of it in a negative light; after all, stress goes hand in hand with a wide range of health and wellbeing issues. But what you might not realise is that stress isn’t always bad. In fact, there are times that stress can be good for you. To help you understand more we have put together our guide to the good and the bad of stress, letting you get the right balance in your life. What is good stress? Stress isn’t always a negative thing; in fact, when experienced in short bursts it can help your physical and mental health. Examples of good stressful situations include; having to make an important presentation at work, taking a test or exam or perhaps being stuck in a lengthy queue of traffic. What are the benefits of good stress? So why is a touch of short term stress good for you? One thing that studies have found is that an intense burst of stress can kick start your body into repairing itself. A good way to think about it is compare it to when you accidently cut yourself. Your body will instantly recognise that it needs to heal the injury and fight the potential of any infection. Good stress works in the same way, it encourages your brain into producing free radicals and cortisol which are not great for the tissues and muscles of your body. After this initial shock your body will start to heal itself and give you a real burst of energy to get the task done, just what you need when you are up against it. What is bad stress? Stress, in its negative form is probably the stress that most of us are aware of. It rears its ugly head during difficult times in our lives and can come from a variety of different sources. Money worries, issues at work or your marriage; all of these things can have an impact on your mental wellbeing and your health. Often bad stress is stress that is ongoing over a period of time. It can cause your body to become flooded with harmful hormones that it then struggles to filter out. What are the side effects of bad stress? Feeling stressed for a period of time can have an impact on your body and mind. Here are some of the side effects felt if you are suffering from stress. Low energy Headaches Constipation, nausea and diarrhoea Increased heartbeat rate Insomnia Lowered immune system Unexplained aches and pains So there you have it, there is such a thing as good stress. No matter whether you are feeling the boost of good stress or struggling with long term stress, there are things that you can do to help you relax, unwind and remember that life isn’t all that bad. 18 Shrubs and climbers for brilliant autumn colour By Julie Dolphin of Miserden Nursery www.miserdennursery.co.uk

On the nursery the late-flowering perennials are still doing their 'thing', pumping out a rich tapestry of colour and reminding us that summer wasn't so long ago. They've taken centre stage for weeks now but with their days numbered, it's time for another group of plants to start taking centre stage and that's the shrubs and climbers with the most brilliant of autumn colour and interest. Here are some of our favourites:

Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii 'Profusion' has foliage which changes colour as it progresses through the seasons and turns golden-purple in autumn. But that's not the main interest. The plant is prized for its spectacular display of violet-purple berries which appear in dense clusters along the branches. When the leaves drop, the berries remain and dazzle like jewels against the bare wood. Euonymus europaeus and Euonymus alatus are known as the spindle trees. These deciduous shrubs are fairly insignificant through spring and summer but in autumn their leaves turn a spectrum of pinks and reds. The branches are covered in bright pink or red fruits which on ripening, reveal bright orange seeds and it's this contrast of such vivid colours (think 80s neon!) that turns it into a show-stopper. Vitis coignetiae is a vigorous climber with broad leaves which turn scarlet and crimson as the days become cooler. Another colourful ornamental vine but one that is less rampant is Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea'. Team these plants for a serious splash of vertical colour in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Cotinus coggygria is a bushy, deciduous shrub which forms a brilliant backdrop to any autumn flowers. 'Royal Purple' has magnificent, dark red-purple oval leaves that turn scarlet in autumn. In July and August, it has fluffy plumes of purplish-pink flowers that fade to silver-white giving an appearance of puffs of smoke (hence the common name of smoke bush!). 'Grace' has purple-tinted leaves that turn scarlet and 'Flame' has blue-green leaves that become orange-red. They need a warm sunny spot if they are to perform at their absolute best.

Cotinus Coggygria

Ceratostigma willmottianum is a small shrub with masses of disc-shaped vivid blue flowers which are still holding their own when the leaves turn a rich red in autumn. The resulting colour combination is beautiful and intense. Best grown in a sheltered, sunny spot in soil that doesn't get too dry.

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster

A little time spent in the garden in October will pay dividends come spring time. Here are some tips for jobs to do during those last few mild days of the year, while plants are dormant and the soil is still warm. Stand back and think about which branches help give the plant its shape. Use those branches to give the plant the shape you want. Remove overgrown and smaller branches, as well as any which are dead or diseased. Always cut with sharp secateurs, just above a “node” (the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another). Plant drifts of daffodil, tulip and bluebell bulbs to guarantee a spring show of colour. October is also a perfect time to relocate any plants, as well as to introduce fruit trees. From pears to plums and apples to apricots – there is a fruiting plant to suit whatever pot or plot you have. Why not try something new! Give your garden sheds, fences and furniture some care and attention before the colder months arrive. Check for signs of damage, rot and rust, treating each as you go with specialist products. Painting wood with preservative will help extend its life. Why not choose a new colour such as blue or green, and give your garden a weekend make-over? Cut back dead plant stalks and sweep up fallen leaves to avoid allowing diseases to over-winter. Alternatively, pile them into one designated area to make your own little wildlife haven. Also, raise your pots up off the ground on bricks or ‘pot feet’ to avoid water-logging and frost damage.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard. We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations. With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book. But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email davidp@severnprint.co.uk and let’s make your book a reality. www.severnprint.co.uk
