Welcome to the March edition of you local magazine and to what is a busy month on the calendar with Mother’s Day followed by the lovely Easter break. More importantly though is that (astronomically speaking) the first day of Spring falls on 20th March although (so I’m told) meteorologically in the Northern hemisphere Spring begins on 1st March. All I know is that it’s a time most of us look forward to and when everything seems to wake up. If you feel in need of help with your Spring cleaning then we have lots of local services on offer inside this month’s magazine, window cleaners, house cleaners, carpet cleaners, help with plumbing, electrics, general household maintenance. You name it, it’s all here so let’s help support our wonderful businesses by making sure we use them!

Quotes Worth Quoting

Money is the seed of money, and the first guinea is sometimes more difficult to acquire than the second million. (Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 18th century philosopher) He who seeks problems will always find them, or, if not, invent them. (Chinese proverb) I don’t know if God exists, but it would be better for his reputation if he didn’t. (Jules Renard, French author). Opinion is that exercise of the human will which helps us to make a decision without information. (John Erskine, author) Insanity is doing the same thing while expecting a different result (Albert Einstein)

I don’t believe in God, but I miss him. (Julian Barnes, writer) Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

St. Patrick’s Day Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! mission was to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. First though, he resumed his studies in France and was eventually made a bishop, whereupon he finally returned to Ireland.

Which, roughly translated, is ‘St Patrick’s Day blessings upon you all.” March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland (both Northern Ireland and Eire). You may be surprised to learn though that he wasn’t Irish at all. He was English! So how did an Englishman become the symbol of all things Irish? Patrick’s early life was the stuff of a boy’s own adventure. He was kidnapped as a teenager and sold as a slave in Ireland. There he worked as a shepherd, in harsh conditions, for six years. Then one night, so the story goes, he heard God speak to him and tell him it was time to escape. This he did and he travelled back to Britain by boat. Once there though he was recaptured and returned to slavery. But Patrick didn’t give up. He escaped again, this time successfully, and journeyed through Europe before he finally settled in a French monastery, where he trained to be a priest. Then he returned to Britain. One night he heard voices calling him back to Ireland. He decided that his

The High King of Tara was the most powerful man in Ireland and was initially angered by Patrick’s arrival, but the bishop’s quiet confidence in his faith won him over and the King gave Patrick permission to preach Christianity around the land. St. Patrick is famous for having used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, “There is one stem but there are three leaves on it. So it is with the Blessed Trinity. There is one God but three persons stemming from the same divinity.” He’s also famous for having banished snakes from Ireland though in fact this story is symbolic. The snake was a symbol of paganism and was therefore ‘banished’ only by way of being replaced with the Christian cross. Patrick died on March 17th, 461AD and is believed to buried in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated enthusiastically even by people who’ve never set foot on the Emerald Isle. It’s a chance for everyone to celebrate their love of Ireland and all things Irish. Why not join in the celebrations. Order a green beer, a Guinness or an Irish Whiskey in your local Irish pub, then raise your glass and shout Sláinte...that’s ‘cheers’ to you and me!

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind Dealing with Insomnia for National Bed Month The whole month of March marks National Bed Month, the annual awareness event started in 1990 by ‘The Sleep Council’ that aims to highlight the importance of a great night’s sleep for our physical and mental health, relationships and overall well-being. Sadly, only twothirds of the population are able to regularly enjoy a good night’s sleep. That’s because, according to the BBC, about a third of the population in the UK suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder in which the sufferer regularly has difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning, despite having ample opportunities to do so. The nation’s health is suffering as a result of insomnia, suggests the Great British Sleep Survey (commissioned by Sleepio), and it is becoming a serious medical issue that should be taken seriously by the NHS.

Hypnotherapists: Liane Ulbricht-Kazan (above) & Sam Little (below)

Insomnia is essentially a by-product of the unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours such as negative thinking (e.g. worrying about an exam or presentation that’s coming up, or ruminating over something that has happened in the past) which creates anxiety and accumulates into the stress in our lives. Whether the problem is real or imagined, it activates the stress response just the same, because the mind does not differentiate between the two. The methods employed by local Hypnotherapy Practice ‘Changes Welcome’ have a great track record for helping people with insomnia. Utilising Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, people can learn to function, think and feel in a much calmer and more relaxed way. By going in for the kind of positive thoughts, interactions and activities that promote the production of feel good brain chemicals like serotonin, we can build positive patterns of thought and healthy habits that allow us to cope with those aspects of life, which can keep us awake at night. Both directly and indirectly Changes Welcome has already helped to improve the lives of thousands of people. This is achieved through proven therapeutic strategies, designed to cultivate effective habits, so people can better deal with all of the challenges that do exist, which were probably the cause of the insomnia in the first place.

First Steps to Feng Shui We have the Chinese to thank for Feng Shui, an ancient philosophy that helps to harmonise everyone with their surroundings and can be applied to both home and office environments. Feng Shui helps teach people how to improve their interior design and create a more balanced and relaxing space by focusing on the energy that is given off by each room.

Clutter

There is probably only a very small majority that can honestly say that they have no clutter in their house. Clutter does not always have to be on show, overcrowded drawers and cupboards add to the clutter too. So one of the first steps is to focus on the clutter and have a good clear out of everything you no longer like in your house.

Air and Light

We all know the benefits plenty of fresh air and sunshine have on our health, but both fresh air and natural light are two essential elements that make up the good feng shui energy that all homes should not be without. In the spring and summer opening the windows is not a habit we have to be reminded to do, but when the colder weather comes round it is less tempting to do so. Open your windows and curtains and let in air and light and why not introduce some air-purifying plants.

Basic Feng Shui Elements

The five Feng Shui elements consist of wood, fire, earth, metal and water and when placing these elements (together or separately) around your home they will work towards helping you achieve a balanced and relaxed energy that will bring many benefits to your life

Keep an eye on the energy in your home

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt the energy drain out of you? That might be due to the negative energies being projected from both the occupants and the room. So if you walk into a room in your home and the feeling is not one that portrays healthy and happy take a look around and see if you can spot the cause. These are only the first few steps towards a Feng Shui home.

Bee nice! Albert Einstein supposedly declared that, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.” There is much debate over whether the great man actually did make such an assertion as he was a physicist after all, not an entomologist, but whether he did or not, it’s a scary thought. There’s no doubt about it, honey bees and bumble bees are of enormous agricultural importance. It is estimated that more than a third of the world’s crop production relies on these bees. Without them we’re in trouble and they are in decline. Pesticides, loss of habitat and disease are all thought to be playing a part. Bees are fascinating and beautiful creatures and as gardeners we can play our part in their continued survival. It’s simple: bees need flowers for sustenance, flowers need bees for survival and gardeners need flowers to garden! First it’s important to think ahead and provide flowers for bees throughout their lifecycle, which runs from March to September. Here are some suggestions. Spring – Bluebells, bugle, flowering cherry, forget-me-not (Myosotis), hellebore and rosemary are all good spring plants. Summer – Aquilegia, sweet peas, fennel, foxgloves, potentilla, roses, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum Late summer / early autumn – Aster, buddleia, dahlia, eryngium, fuchsia, heather, lavender and sedum. Second, unfortunately not all flowers are

created equal. Frilly double flowers, for example, are too elaborate. They have so many petals that the bees struggle to get to the nectar and pollen. This is the reason that single dahlias attract lots of bees, whilst double varieties are generally ignored. Single flowered rose varieties are also good, such as the rambler Seagull, with its flat open white blooms, large yellow stamens and heady scent. Any similar rambler grown over a fence or wall will do. Some, like the pale pink Little Rambler, will even repeat flower. Ramblers are terrific roses. They are vigorous, disease resistant and great for covering bare fences, unsightly sheds and walls. Best of all they need next to no pruning! The main thing is to keep it simple: a few flowers for each part of the bee life cycle and no overly fancy varieties. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t grow double flowered dahlias if that’s what floats your boat, it’s just that Mr Bee would appreciate a few single flowered varieties thrown into the mix. Let’s make this the year we all be nice to bees: our future may depend on it!

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”
