I’m a strong believer that everything happens for a reason. Last year, the school I was working at told us that numbers for the next academic year were dropping and the school needed to reduce staff numbers. Fast forward to now and I have taken the leap into self employment. I get to spend more time with my own children and I am 3-7something August Frampton on Severn doing that I really love. Quotes Worth Quoting

The American people generally do the right thing...after first exhausting every available alternative. (Winston Churchill) Happiness is good health and a bad memory. (Ingrid Bergman, actress) In science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurs. (Sir Francis Darwin, 19th Century Botanist). Creditors have better memories than debtors. (Benjamin Franklin) The successful revolutionary is a statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal (Eric Fromm, 20th century social psychologist)

A Bicycle Built for Two You’re never too young to cycle Teach a child to ride a bike and you also do so much more. You improve their confidence, their independence, and you make a valuable contribution to their health and fitness.

Child bike seat These are comfortable and offer a great view as the child is raised up. Choose the seat according to the child’s weight and height rather than age as children vary so much.

Regular family cycling trips provide a wealth of new experiences and a sense of adventure.

Carrying a child alters the centre of gravity of the bike so practice on soft ground or in a safe area before venturing out on to the roads.

It’s never too late to start: even if junior is too young for their own bike they will love to travel along with you. Please note that for most trailers and all child bike seats the child should be able to support their own head wearing a cycle helmet. For most children this is between 10-14 months but take advice from your local cycle specialist. Trailers These attach to the adult’s bike and may be single or double. They offer some protection from the elements as they can be covered. They can also take children up to 45Kg. An older child has enough space to take along their own snacks and a couple of toys. They can nap in comfort if they wish.

Trailer bikes / Tag-alongs These have one wheel, and a saddle with a curved frame which attaches to the adult bike. The child can peddle or just hitch a ride. For an older child who wants to ride independently but who tires on long cycle rides, you can buy a connector kit to attach their bike to the adult bike. Consult your local dealer for advice.

The disadvantage of a trailer is its proximity to the ground: it doesn’t afford much of a view. There is also a danger that, if used on the road, some drivers may not see it. Hire before you buy. Most cycle-hire outlets offer a good range. It’s a great way to find out if a trailer is for you. You can buy specialist trailers for babies too young to travel in child seats or in conventional trailers. The child is securely strapped in and the framework acts as a roll-cage in case of a toppling accident. The beauty of these specialised trailers is that they also convert into a buggy. They’re not recommended for road use though.

Remember… No-one should travel in a conventional trailer or bike seat unless they are wearing a helmet. Bike seats and to some extent trailers leave children exposed to the elements. Wrap them up warm in cold weather, and make sure they’re slathered in sunscreen when it’s sunny.

Suffering from Insomnia?

What if we told you the answer is simple?

Lying awake for hours unable to fall asleep? Sleeping lightly or waking up in the night? Waking up too early? ….. Most people experience sleep problems at various times, but sometimes enough is enough. We can think of insomnia as a by-product of getting certain aspects of our lives wrong. When we think negatively, and this includes worrying, we create anxiety and stress, which translates into the kind of alertness that keeps our minds from settling. Many add to the problem by thinking about these same thoughts at night, which increases stress, anxiety and exacerbation… and so the cycle continues… But the answer is simpler than you may think… By maintaining positive patterns of thought that negate the causes of anxiety and stress in the first place, sleeplessness and insomnia can be avoided. This might well mean taking some new initiatives on things, and a willingness to do things differently. As we get better at being relaxed during the day, instead going in for the kind of positive thoughts, interactions and activities that promote the production of feel good brain chemicals, we can learn to function, think and feel in a much calmer and more relaxed way. This is all within our conscious control. Another important aspect is REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). REM is not only reduced through sleeplessness, but it can be skipped when using certain sleeping tablets, alcohol, or other drugs. REM is where we process emotional and negative experiences, so that we can regain control and make sense of them. But REM is limited. So, if we’re in the habit of creating too much worry, concern or negativity every day, then we’ll not get on top of things. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy for insomnia looks for the solutions to the problems that you didn’t even know were keeping you awake. It aims to address these on both a conscious and a subconscious level, whilst re-educating the mind to expect a good night’s sleep as standard, so you don’t have to worry about that either. When you are relaxed, and in control of yourself, and to a great extent also your thought patterns, then insomnia can be a thing of the past.

The power of an alternative

what makes complimentary therapies so great for body and mind By Zoe Warner of VM Organic

We all know that medicine can help you when you feel unwell, helping you to recover from an illness or infection. But what about complimentary therapies, how can they help you to feel great both on the inside and out? What are complimentary therapies? Before we look at what they can do for you, we first need to understand what is meant by complimentary therapies. Complimentary therapies are treatments that fall outside standard medical treatments. They include acupuncture, homeopathy, aromatherapy, reflexology, meditation amongst many other different therapies. Treatments should be carried out by an experienced and qualified practitioner, each different type of therapy offers alternatives for a range of illnesses and disorders. What are the benefits? There are a variety of reasons that people may turn to complimentary therapies to help them and there are in turn a range of benefits to using these types of therapies. They balance body and mind One of the best things about complimentary therapies is that they are not just targeted on your body. Many offer treatments that also improve your mental state too. Whether that is a relaxing massage, a course of acupuncture or aromatherapy, you will find that many will concentrate on creating a relaxing environment whilst they provide you with the treatment that you are looking for. They can boost your immune system It is thought that a number of complimentary therapies will give your immune system a boost. Whether it is just because they make you feel relaxed and reduce stress we don’t know but there is something to be said for having a refreshed and revived immune system when you are feeling unwell.

19 They let you take control When you have an illness that is being treated at a hospital you may feel helpless about what happens to you. If you balance this with some complimentary therapies, then you can decide what treatment you have and when. Getting back a sense of control can do wonders for your mindset and help you cope better when the time comes to visit the hospital again. It really does work There a variety of therapies that are proven to help during treatment for particular illnesses. A prime example of this is how acupuncture can ease the feelings of sickness experienced by those who are undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. It gives you a chance to talk They say that a problem shared is a problem halved and we have found that one of the best therapies is simply being able to talk through your problems. When you are going through a difficult time, having someone who is there to listen can really help which is why many complimentary therapies will include plenty of time to get those problems off your chest. Whether you use it alongside medicine when suffering an illness or simply to give yourself a bit of a boost, or to continue you maintain good health complimentary therapies are more than just an alternative; they are a helping hand when you need them the most.

Garden View Recycle your waste water Many of us already have water butts and they’re a fantastic way to utilise all that lovely free rainwater so characteristic of this country. But what about other sources of water? I’m thinking about grey water here. Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household waste water apart from toilet water, which is considered ‘black water’, and which should not be recycled by the average gardener. Reclaiming water from your washing machine or dishwasher can prove costly and time consuming. The best advice for most amateur eco-gardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance. So this means water from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool. First you have to get it to the garden and this is actually remarkably easy. In the case of washing-up simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink. For baths and paddling pools ask your garden centre or local DIY store for a simple water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Next you need to clean the water. All this involves is filtering it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. Use it within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up. Many of us are now on water meters so it not only makes good environmental sense to recycle water, it ,makes sound economic sense too.

Top Tips Keep it simple - It is possible to buy special kits to convert all your home’s grey water for gardenusage but these can prove expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and easy. If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it! Think natural - Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants. Don’t forget the shower - Put the plug in when you shower and you can save the water for the garden. Safety-first - All grey water will contain some bacteria. Use it within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for pots and containers, only on decorative border plants. Think laterally - You don’t have to restrict grey-water to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too!

All our carers benefit from Corinium Care’s award-winning training programme, an important part of which is training in dementia care. To request a brochure or speak to a member of our team, please call 01453 839290 or visit our website www.coriniumcare.com

EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard. We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations. With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book. But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email davidp@severnprint.co.uk and let’s make your book a reality. www.severnprint.co.uk
