3 Welcome to the latest edition and as I am writing this we are still in January although publishing being what it is we have a very Easter/Spring-like cover! This edition is the Feb/March one and with Spring officially being the 20th March. that’s fine by me as it can’t come soon enough! It was just lovely walking the dogs this morning and seeing the early flowering snowdrops in our garden and at the edges of the fields. The sunshine over the hills and valleys really lifts the heart. Although our ,mornings are getting lighter a little earlier now, it is still so important to wake up feeling refreshed from a good night’s sleep, If you find this isn’t happening for you take a look at Zoe Warner’s tips on page 30. Until next time Best wishes

I should like to put in a recommendation for a company that I found advertised in the Five Valleys Directory. It is Barden Clean, a carpet and upholstery cleaning company. This year, Badger Sundays will be starting on March 25th and will be the last Sunday of every month until the final one on July 29th. Walking, talking and picnicking means that Badger Sundays are a great way to learn more about what we do and where we do it.

07722 828363

Last year’s Wounded Badger Patrol Tea Party was so popular that we’ve made it an annual event. A talk from the conservationist and tropical field biologist Ian Redmond OBE, as well as a range of children’s activities, meant that guests ranging from 9 months to 9 decades enjoyed themselves. The great bring and share tea and raffle went down well too! We’ll publish more details in February and hope you enjoy the winter sunshine in the meantime.

Easter Eggs They’re good for you...honest! Chocolate Easter eggs. Surely one of the finest German inventions ever. No-one can be quite sure who first came up with the idea of combining chocolate and eggs but whoever did was a marketing genius. In these health-conscious times though can we still justify this tradition or should we ban such an indulgent confectionary? I once read an article, in the Guardian I think, that claimed you can find evidence to support any argument you like if you look hard enough. So on behalf of chocoholics everywhere I decided to take up the challenge and here are my results. CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU Chocolate is good for your brain Cocoa-rich drinks are rich in chemicals called flavanols. These enhance brain function, fight sleep deprivation, fatigue and aging! They are the same chemicals present in Green Tea, which is touted as a preventative for stroke, heart failure, cancer and diabetes. Gwyneth Paltrow drinks gallons of it and she looks fab. Sadly I couldn’t find any mention of her imbibing Thornton’s continental choccies but I’ll keep looking. Chocolate helps prevent cancer Ok, we’ve met flavanols...now meet flavonoids. These are anti-oxidants: you know, those things beloved of cosmetics companies, ‘We slapped this on our model and she looked twenty years younger after we’d photographed her in soft-focus and air-brushed her so even her own mother wouldn’t recognise her.’

are phase II enzymes, which help eliminate mutagens and carcinogens, which sound like the aliens from an episode of Captain Scarlett and are equally nasty. Only small amounts of flavonoids are required for this beneficial effect but hey...have another egg just to make sure. Chocolate is a mood-booster It contains small amounts of phenylethylamine, anandamide, tryptophan and caffeine. These are natural mood boosters so this explains why women crave the stuff when they’re premenstrual, pregnant, at work, awake… I guess chocolate is both naughty and nice and annoyingly, as with anything life, moderation is the key. Dark chocolate is definitely better for you over all. 60% cocoa solids is great but 70 or 75% is better. Milk chocolate contains fewer cocoa solids and has a higher sugar and fat content and I couldn’t find any research saying either of these have hidden health benefits...and believe me I looked really hard. So enjoy your eggs this Easter but don’t over do it. Now I’m off to see if I can find a photo of Gwynnie with her chompers wrapped round a Cadbury’s Cream Egg. There must be one somewhere...

We do know that they help prevent cancer. We also know they don’t do this directly. In fact our bodies view flavonoids as highly undesirable and work hard to get rid of them. By-products of this effort

How to get a good night's sleep

As parents around the world will testify, a good night's sleep is something you only really appreciate when you don't get it. Now there's not much you can do to make a baby grow up more quickly, but there are a lot you can do to promote good sleep in general.

Start with your bedroom

It can be tempting to think of a bedroom as just a room with a bed in it. In actual fact, it should be a room which promotes sleep. Ideally this should be the room's only purpose, but that can be impractical in reality. If a bedroom does have to do double-duty (e.g. as an office), then try to create a distinct sleeping area. This should be free from all the distractions which hinder sleep, particularly electronic devices. If you absolutely must have a mobile on a night time, put it well away from the bed and set the ringtone loud enough so that it will wake you up. Make your sleeping area as comfortable as you can afford, e.g. use a quality mattress and bedding.

Develop a bedtime routine

When you were little, there's a good chance your parents had a bed-time routine laid out for you, maybe dinner, bath, chill-out time, hot drink, story, bed. Maybe you didn't realize it at the time but each of those steps prepared your body and mind for sleep. This works for adults too. If at all possible, eat your evening meal early enough that you have plenty of time to digest it before going to bed. Then try to organize your evening so that you are steadily winding down before bedtime. A zingy shower with citrus shower gel may be wonderful in the morning, but in the evening a bath, or at least, a gentle shower with a relaxing scent is a better choice. Likewise pass on the caffeine and go for soothing hot drinks. Deep breathing can also help to make you feel more relaxed.

Manage your overall well-being

Sometimes it's the little niggles that people often don't think worth worrying that stop a good night's sleep. Those aches and pains you just ignore and soldier on through. The general feeling of being run-down and/or stressed out you just have to deal with. These can have many causes, such as poor diet or unhealthy habits such as smoking. In some cases, they can be a sign of a more serious problem and need attention from a doctor. In many cases, however, they are just symptoms of the fast-paced, always-on modern world we live in. Dealing with them, therefore, can be as simple as making some time in your diary to switch off your phone and switch on to the benefits of complementary therapies such as massage and reflexology. In addition to their practical health benefits, they can also help to relieve stress. They are particularly valuable for people with busy, hectic lives, be that for work-related reasons or for personal reasons, such as having young children. At the end of the day, “me time is essential for everyone. Unless you take care of yourself, how will you take care of the people you love? Article by Zoe Warner of VM Organic

Herbs and Spices For health - by Sue Blain, Naturopath Spring at last: a good time for a detox. Cut out sugar for a flying start but you’ll also need a few herbs. Most of us already have a selection of herbs in the kitchen cupboard. Before refrigeration was invented herbs such as Sage, Thyme, Oregano and Rosemary were used to preserve meat. But they were also used medicinally and we can make use of these properties to soothe coughs and sore throats. Add ginger, cinnamon, garlic or parsley to boiling water. Let it cool a little and gargle with the mixture or just drink it like a tea. You can also include these herbs and spices in a fresh vegetable soup because they will make your diet more alkaline. Use Turmeric and Cayenne Pepper in your cooking to boost circulation. Buy a liquid preparation, called a tincture, of Ginkgo Biloba or Vinca Minor if cold hands and feet are a particular problem. These may even improve your memory at the same time! If indigestion is a problem then the bitter herbs Centarium, Gentian or Yarrow may help. Nature provides us with a number of natural antibiotics to try, such as Echinacea and the less well known Goldenseal and Oliveleaf. Echinacea is now recognised as an effective regulator of the immune system and Uva-ursi acts as a urinary antiseptic, preventing cystitis.

your doctor if you’re on prescribed medication. Alongside homeopathy, herbalism is still the most widely practised medicine in the world and, until the nineteenth century, it was the main form of medicine in the West. Herbs contain many plant constituents which work together and balance each other. Meadowsweet, for example, contains salicylic acid, from which aspirin is synthesised, but it also contains an ingredient that treats stomach ulcers, sometimes a side-effect of taking aspirin on an empty stomach. Herbalists use an holistic approach to treat the underlying cause of a disease. Many herbs stimulate the body’s own healing powers and some have an affinity with a particular organ or system. They can be a natural complement to orthodox medicine. For example, herbs can promote healing and vitality in a patient following cancer treatment or surgery. They are often used alongside homoeopathy or acupuncture. Why not create a herb garden this spring so you can use more herbs in your cooking? Seek advice on appropriate tinctures in health shops and let herbs and spices become a part of your healthier lifestyle.

Even so-called garden weeds, Dandelion and Nettle, are good for detoxing. They can be bought as a tea or a tincture. Milk Thistle, which supports the regeneration of liver cells; Artichoke, which improves fat metabolism and reduces cholesterol levels, and Kelp are all good for cleansing. When using tinctures always follow the instructions on the bottle, and check with
