3 Welcome back and it seems a long time since the last edition at the beginning of December. We had a slight hiccup to our Christmas arrangements when my husband managed to fall down some steps and rupture a knee ligament which ended up with him in hospital until Christmas eve. Our Christmas was decidedly quiet after that but on the upside it was wonderfully relaxing! If you want to show your romantic side on Valentines Day this year but don’t have a lot of spare cash (particularly after Christmas) then turn to page 28 where Zoe Warner gives plenty of tips on gifts that won’t break the bank and are all the more special for it. Finally, if your thoughts are turning to home improvements or general maintenance around the house now that we are approaching Spring then do make sure you look here first and make use of all our local services.

Reliable Local Handymen Retired police officers in Gloucestershire are pioneers in an ambitious national network of highly vetted handymen launched by ‘Blue Local Handymen’. Helping to combat the ongoing problem of cowboy builders and dodgy tradespeople, local retired police officers with a passion for home maintenance are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to the residents and businesses of Stroud, Cheltenham, Gloucester and surrounding villages. Typically police officers retire after 30 years service and a huge number are still eager to continue playing an active and productive role in their communities. All handymen prove themselves capable and experienced in home maintenance works before joining the network and carry recent CRB Checks. Managing Director, Nick Orde-Powlett, hopes that the company’s rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in Gloucestershire: “Our vetting process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the community under their belt – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears better than anyone else and they genuinely care.“ Handyman Jim Lias states: “I have always had a keen interest in home maintenance and now I have the opportunity to spread the skills I have developed for the benefit of the local community"

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

Garden View This month - Greenhouses available. Be sure to consider any shadows cast by existing buildings and trees, including those trees which are not fully grown yet. The most important time for sun to reach a greenhouse is during the spring and autumn when the sun is low in the sky.

Do you have a greenhouse? February is the perfect time to think about installing one so you can get a jump on the growing season. The ability to shut the door on nasty weather makes pootling about and checking how things are coming on a much more pleasant experience. If your greenhouse has a power point you can have heat and light at your fingertips too, allowing you more time to potter. Don’t think it has to be huge and unsightly. There are so many styles available now, from the traditional cedarframed variety to pretty bijou Victorian constructions. You could even go a bit sci-fi with a geodesic dome! As well as providing the perfect environment to start off early seedlings, a greenhouse means you can extend your growing season for fruit and vegetables. Don’t limit yourself to tomatoes. If you choose your varieties carefully you can try strawberries, peppers, aubergines, peaches, nectarines and grapes. Choosing the right site is important. Make sure that the ground is level. Your greenhouse should receive the maximum amount of winter sunlight

Greenhouses are all about temperature. Obviously they are a place of warmth, but they shouldn’t be too warm. It’s easy to cook your plants even in a British summer. Place a thermometer in the shade near the middle of your greenhouse and monitor the temperature at different times during sunny and cloudy weather. Most plants thrive best around 15-21C. If the temperature regularly reaches 26C or higher, you will need to ventilate. The simplest and cheapest way to ventilate is to open the door and roof vents in the morning and close them in the evening, but ventilation systems can be fitted which are automatically triggered as the temperature rises. Greenhouses do require some maintenance. If you already own one, then February is a good time to give it a clean. Disinfect the entire greenhousewith a brush and a mixture of diluted bleach, keeping it away from the plants. Open up any vents to let the fumes out. Scrub down all the walls and floor, then rinse with clean water. Throughout the growing season spray the walls and corners with a hose set on the jet nozzle. This helps keep spider mites and whiteflies to a minimum. A greenhouse can be a wonderful addition to a garden. Well designed, well stocked and well arranged it can be a thing of beauty too.

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind Eating Disorders Awareness Week The 22nd-28th February is Eating Disorders Awareness Week organised by the charity Beat, the UK’s leading charity supporting anyone affected by eating disorders or difficulties with food, weight and shape. Eating disorders are mental health conditions where people develop unhealthy eating habits and an abnormal attitude towards food that can lead to a wide range of negative physiological, social, physical and psychological consequences. There are a number of variants, but the most common of them include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. A common thread among the various disorders is that they all feature alarming disturbances in eating behaviour and extreme efforts to manage weight or food intake.

Liane Ulbricht-Kazan DHP HPD MNCH (Reg)

In the UK, about 1.6 million people of all ages, genders and backgrounds suffer from a form of eating disorder. Sam Little DSFH These issues usually develop during teen years or young adulthood (but in some cases may also appear during childhood or later in life). They can become serious mental and psychological health concerns, which can in extreme cases become life-threatening, if a person does not receive proper and effective help. However it’s generally fair to say that these problems have their roots outside of the relationship with food. Their triggers can be far reaching. In this sense, helping people is usually all about managing the thought proccesses that lead to the anxiety, stress, self-esteem and confidence etc. issues, which fuel the problem in the first place. The Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) can be highly effective in helping clients to overcome conditions brought about by inappropriate responses to stress. It helps people to regain a sense of intellectual control in their lives, which does not create the anxiety or trigger the issue in the first place. By focusing on the solutions rather than dwelling on the problems, SFH works by helping people to build up the healthier patterns of thought and behaviour required, in order to build positive actions into habits, which are positive, healthy and self sustaining.

Valentine’s on a Budget By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon

Valentine’s Day can end up being one of the most expensive declarations of love but it doesn’t have to be. Who said love is counted in pounds? Showing your partner that you love them does not have to break the bank and sometimes the simplest things are the best. They are even better when they are unique to the person on the receiving end. Do you remember when you were younger and you made cards at school? Why not surprise your loved one with a handmade card that is definitely more meaningful. Handmade gifts are also a great way of showing your love and if you happen to be good at a particular thing (cooking, gardening, painting, poetry) then why not showcase your skills to the person who means the most. Love vouchers are also a great way to show your love without worrying about the expense and in some cases much more appreciated. These can also be handmade and there is no reason why a bit of humour cannot be added to the love. Who says love has to always be about hearts and flowers? In the age of the internet more and more discount websites are springing up and there are plenty of fabulous offers that would be perfect for a Valentine’s treat. You might even find that due to the amazing discounts on offer Valentines’ Day can be twice as special with not one but two wonderful treats. If you fancied making a weekend of it, clubbing together and renting a cottage for a weekend can be both romantic and a huge amount of fun and when shared with close friends can be the icing on the cake. Valentine’s Day was once a day of secrets but over the years it has become less so which might be good news if you are planning a Valentine’s on a budget. Maybe that is exactly what your other half is doing too? And not everyone wants to be surprised. Why not decide between you what this Valentine’s Day should hold for you? You might want to forgo cards and presents and just spend the day or evening doing something that you both love to do. If all else fails order a takeaway, open a bottle of wine, light some candles and stick on your loved one’s favourite DVD and spend the evening snuggled up on the sofa. Vanilla Moon have some pre Valentine and Valentine offers on so both you and your loved one can be pampered with 5* treatments without 5* price tags. Visit our Facebook page or sign up to our website to find out more. www.vanillamoon.biz

Herbs and Spices For health - by Sue Blain, Naturopath

A new year and a good time for a detox. Cut out sugar for a flying start but you’ll also need a few herbs. Most of us already have a selection of herbs in the kitchen cupboard. Before refrigeration was invented herbs such as Sage, Thyme, Oregano and Rosemary were used to preserve meat. But they were also used medicinally and we can make use of these properties to soothe coughs and sore throats. Add ginger, cinnamon, garlic or parsley to boiling water. Let it cool a little and gargle with the mixture or just drink it like a tea. You can also include these herbs and spices in a fresh vegetable soup because they will make your diet more alkaline. Use Turmeric and Cayenne Pepper in your cooking to boost circulation. Buy a liquid preparation, called a tincture, of Ginkgo Biloba or Vinca Minor if cold hands and feet are a particular problem. These may even improve your memory at the same time! If indigestion is a problem then the bitter herbs Centarium, Gentian or Yarrow may help. Nature provides us with a number of natural antibiotics to try, such as Echinacea and the less well known Goldenseal and Oliveleaf. Echinacea is now recognised as an effective regulator of the immune system and Uva-ursi acts as a urinary antiseptic, preventing cystitis.

your doctor if you’re on prescribed medication. Alongside homeopathy, herbalism is still the most widely practised medicine in the world and, until the nineteenth century, it was the main form of medicine in the West. Herbs contain many plant constituents which work together and balance each other. Meadowsweet, for example, contains salicylic acid, from which aspirin is synthesised, but it also contains an ingredient that treats stomach ulcers, sometimes a side-effect of taking aspirin on an empty stomach. Herbalists use an holistic approach to treat the underlying cause of a disease. Many herbs stimulate the body’s own healing powers and some have an affinity with a particular organ or system. They can be a natural complement to orthodox medicine. For example, herbs can promote healing and vitality in a patient following cancer treatment or surgery. They are often used alongside homoeopathy or acupuncture. Why not create a herb garden this spring so you can use more herbs in your cooking? Seek advice on appropriate tinctures in health shops and let herbs and spices become a part of your healthier lifestyle.

Even so-called garden weeds, Dandelion and Nettle, are good for detoxing. They can be bought as a tea or a tincture. Milk Thistle, which supports the regeneration of liver cells; Artichoke, which improves fat metabolism and reduces cholesterol levels, and Kelp are all good for cleansing. When using tinctures always follow the instructions on the bottle, and check with

A Peek into the Past February 1964 - Beatlemania On February 7th 1964 the Beatles arrived in New York at the start of their first tour of the United States. More than 300 screaming teenagers greeted them as they stepped on to the tarmac at Kennedy Airport. Many teens had skipped school or work. Some were in tears and many carried placards which read "I love you, please stay". The Beatles' first scheduled appearance was on American television on the Ed Sullivan show. More than 5,000 fans applied for tickets to be part of the audience but only 750 were lucky enough to get them. Security barriers had to be erected and the fab four received the kind of police protection usually reserved for kings and presidents! It is said that the crime rate dipped to a 50 year low as more than 40% of America tuned in to watch.

They performed the songs All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There and I Want To Hold Your Hand. Four decades later, also in February, the Beatles were given the President's Award at the Grammys to mark the 40th anniversary of what became known as "Beatlemania". It was accepted by the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison.
