This Month

The school holidays are now in full swing and amazingly (as I’m writing this) the weather is still pretty good! Quite often school holiday time is followed by a month of dreary downpours but as we have had a lovely summer so far, let’s hope it continues. There always seems so much I want to do this time of the year, so many lovely places to see in this country but I’m also wanting to be home in the garden as much as possible where there is always something to do. And I really love being out there. If you enjoy gardening but would like a break it might be worth a trip to Miserden Nursey where there is now a lovely café serving tea, coffee and cakes. Perfect mixture of garden interest and relaxation! We should all take time out to enjoy all these beautiful places we have around us, time to smell the roses as they say………

Testimonial from Victoria Smart of Tidy homes Your publication has done me so well and I have had so many clients through it that it’s definitely been worth while. I’m just up to a point now where I have more work than employees - which is great - but I feel I need to stop advertising at least for the time being…just so I can catch up with myself! Many thanks though for all your help…having been a start up company this time last year I couldn’t have done what I have done over the last 12 months without publications such as yours - so thank you. Since the cull first started in 2012, it has always been after the August bank holiday. For this reason, 'Badger Beacons' is being planned as a way for everyone to get involved and to raise awareness of this year's cull Of course, it won't be possible for everyone to build a physical beacon, but there are plenty of ways to join in with the spirit of the event, wherever you are in the country. This could involve holding a candlelit vigil with friends at the top of a hill, or simply shining a torch skywards! Then share your photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #BadgerBeacons. Even better, if you're able, why not live stream your video so even more people can join in.

We are a 36 bedded home, with a popular “sunflower” cafe designed dining room, a drawing room overlooking the paddock and a themed garden room to provide appropriate stimulus, which leads out to the sensory garden, following through to the mature gardens. You can also take a stroll through the shopping area, down the promenade in the beach area, laundry, garden shed and more all of which are interactive areas providing continuous opportunities for stimulation, conversation and reminiscence. The home accepts each person as an individual with a holistic view of their care, with their needs and wishes upmost in all we aim to achieve. We aim to ensure that a person’s feelings and memories are paramount within the care we provide ensuring a person feels secure, happy and settled in their new surroundings.

Stinchcombe Manor offers a homely, stimulating environment, over two floors.

The Beeches is our End Of Life suite consisting of two beautifully decorated and furnished rooms in a quiet area within the home with its own access and a quiet seating area to support visitors. We ensure people in the last stages of their life spend their last precious days within a caring, calm and loving environment.

Tetbury Classic Car Show – Sunday 3rd September 2017 The show started in 2012 as a spin-off from the Roses School in Stroud, supporting a children’s charity called “Allsorts.” Their web site http://allsortsglos.org.uk/ - details the support they provide to children with disabilities or additional needs, and to their families. Funds from our non-profit event also help Tetbury’s Sir William Romney’s School, who rent us their sports fields for the occasion. This year the show will be on Sunday September the third, with more than 700 classic vehicles, lots of interesting stands, displays, and new car franchises. Last year we distributed over £6,000 in funds, although our team remains small – there are just five of us in the core group. That’s because we also rely on the support of Tetbury Lion’s club and the Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds, to manage both the crowds and the traffic. More about us, the event and booking in your classic car on our web site, here: http://www.tetburyclassiccarshow.org/ We hope you can attend this year! Tetbury Classic Car Show Committee

The Garden Café opens A brand new café has been launched in one of the magnificent historic glasshouse at The Nursery at Miserden. Boasting delicious coffee, tea and cakes, The Garden Café is open six days a week from Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am to 5pm. The café is situated in one of the nursery’s period vineries and features beautiful walnut tables made from trees harvested from the Miserden estate. There is also an outdoor seating area where visitors can soak up the sun or take shade under parasols in this magical spot in the Cotswold Hills. The café is not only enjoyed by visitors to the nursery but is also a useful pit-stop for walkers and cyclists and visitors to the beautiful gardens of the Miserden estate. The Garden Cafe will soon be evolving its menu to reflect the changing seasons and in the cooler months, wood burning stoves will keep café visitors warm and toasty. Drawing in green-fingered gardeners from far and wide, visitors at Miserden Nursery in Stroud can now enjoy a leisurely pit-stop at the brand new café, boasting delicious coffee and plenty of cake. A joint venture for The Nursery at Miserden owners, Julie Dolphin and Steve Richardson, along with Nicholas Wills of the Miserden Estate, The Garden Café is housed within the grounds of the nursery in one of the elegant glasshouses, complete with rustic walnut tables grown and milled on the estate and surrounding by beautiful views of the Golden Valley. Offering both indoor and alfresco seating, The Garden Café will be serving up hot drinks and scrumptious homemade cakes from the nearby Lavender Bakehouse and will be open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Promising plans of an expansion this autumn, including a larger menu, visitors can enjoy a relaxed stroll around the nursery and garden before refuelling at the café. For more information, see The Garden Café.

Your Family Needs You!

HOW TO BEAT STRESS & ANGER Anger may be a normal part of the human emotion, but it must be handled with care! Dealing with anger when you’re already angry is often tricky. We believe that ‘letting it out’ is also not the answer. This approach is great for practicing the rage reaction, when in fact it’s the opposite that is required. If you have anger issues, perhaps find yourself snapping at the kids, or your partner, because you’re stressed about something else, then recognizing the problem is already a great advantage. There is no doubt that even mild anger episodes are destructive and exhausting. They further fuel the fight flight response, and can leave scars you can’t see! A wise man once said that every time you lose your temper with somebody, especially the kids, it’s as if you are hammering a nail into a fence. Sure, you can remove the nail, but it will leave a hole. It will be changed. There is no shame in taking the initiative to do better in life, especially when the stakes are high. And there is a simple answer to this challenge = Relaxation. You simply cannot be relaxed and angry at the same time, in the same way that you can’t be stress and relaxed. You can practice relaxation in many ways, and this goes hand in hand with both positivity and productiveness. When we’re relaxed we have access to our intellectual brain, which allows us to think rationally, and reasonably about challenges, rather than entering the fight flight response. One way to make relaxation part of your daily like, which our Hypnotherapy clients are requested to take part in is listening to a daily guided Relaxation CD. We thought it would be good to give you access to some of these recordings in the hope that you may take up your own resolve to get better at dealing with anger, to become more relaxed, and learn to manage stress on autopilot.

A Diet for Life! What we eat can affect how we feel “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” just about sums up this article, after all healthy eating is eating only the foods that you can digest and assimilate. Let it be as natural and nutritious as possible but let it be right for you or might make you ill. People who come to me for advice are often eating healthily yet still feel unwell. They may spend money on supplements and special diet books, and then only feel slightly better. Many are amazed at their improvement once problem foods are avoided.

struggle to cope and over time illness will set in due to inflammation, immune reactions and high histamine levels. Inflammation can occur in all parts of the body: the skin, lungs, sinuses, joints, arteries or nerves, not just in the digestive system. Sometimes, sadly, it can begin at a young age, with eczema, asthma, hay fever and other allergies, or later, when it’s equally sadly put down to ageing, with fluid retention, arthritis, high blood pressure, weight gain, persistent fatigue, poor memory etc.

Unfortunately some of the foods we think of as healthy and nutritious are the main culprits. These include wholegrain cereals, eggs, cow’s milk, soya, nuts & seeds, yogurt and certain fruits & vegetables. They cause allergies and other health problems to those lacking certain digestive enzymes or who are intolerant to them. This may be an inflamed digestive system or chronic physical and even mental problems, such as hyperactivity. Many children become better behaved and able to concentrate at school once milk and/or wheat have been removed from their diet and replaced with appropriate alternatives. Some people have problems digesting different sugars, such as fructose - found in fruit, or lactose - found in milk, or complex sugars - found in whole grains. The cabbage family can be the cause of IBS, while citrus fruits, migraines and stone fruits can be responsible for joint pain. This partly explains why some people appear healthy even though they eat white bread and hardly any fruit and vegetables.

If you’d like to be healthier or think you may be suffering from allergies or chronic illnesses you could try an elimination diet. Avoid suspect foods for a short period and then reintroduce them one at a time to judge their effect. However, because these are complex issues, it’s always best to do this under supervision. Seek advice from a naturopath. It may mean giving up a much loved foods for a while but will be worth it if it leads to good health and longevity. Sue Blain - Naturopath

However, refined cereals, too much sugar, too many artificial additives and a lack of raw foods will eventually take its toll on our health. Our bodies will
