It is no secret that many of us want to know how best to maintain a youthful look for as long as possible. Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Gloucester and spent my childhood in and around Stroud. My parents used to do up old houses and barns so we moved around the five valleys - living in showman’s wagons to manor houses! When I was about 4 we moved to a farm in Horsley, which was idyllic, and then as I reached secondary school we moved to our current farm in Nympsfield. What did you do when you left school? I did an Art Foundation at Stroud College and then studied Politics & Philosophy at Manchester Uni. After uni my girlfriend, Naomi, and I set up a painting and decorating business which was a great way to make some money with minimal outlay whilst being self employed (I like to be my own boss!). What led you into the business you have now? It was a bit of an accident. I started advertising the farm on camping websites to help my dad, Richard, out. I was planning to do a Masters in London. At the end of the summer the camping had been really well received so I decided to cancel my plans for a Masters and get into the camping business instead! After around 8 years of running the campsite we wanted a new challenge. The campsite income was stable and campers often asked whether they could get food or drink onsite so the cafÊ was a natural evolution.

21 We’ve tried to create the kind of café that we’d like to visit - really high quality coffee with homemade cakes and wood-cooked food, using local and Organic ingredients. We do all of the building work ourselves so it’s developed slowly but with an eye for detail. Any interests or hobbies? A lot of my time is spent with music - collecting vinyl records and playing instruments (badly). Naomi and I enjoy foraging, especially for wild mushrooms, and growing vegetables. I really enjoy cooking, ideally outdoors over fire. What of your home life? Naomi and I have two boys, Rupert and Billy. I hope they enjoy growing up on a farm as much as I did! Plans for the future? The farm in an ongoing project. There are changes to make with the campsite and I’d also like to finish the structure of our main building. This will hopefully include an events space and perhaps rooms for making cheese and charcuterie, and staff accommodation. I’ve always wanted to build some treehouses onsite so that’s also in the pipeline. After that I’ve got a few plans for other projects and businesses offsite! thistledown.org.uk/café
