National Vegetarian Week 18th to 24th May This month includes National Vegetarian Week, which aims to celebrate & publicise vegetarianism in its broadest sense. Vegetarianism is an increasingly popular choice of lifestyle and is no longer seen as ‘cranky’ as in the recent past. There are many more vegetarian choices in restaurants today, and the range of food products available just seems to keep growing. Many supermarkets now have specialised vegetarian sections, offering sausages, burgers and other products, all of which are suitable for veggies. People sometimes think of vegetarianism as a relatively recent trend, but in fact it has been practiced for millennia. A vegetarian ideology was practiced in Egypt around 3,200 BC and abstention from meat was central to such early philosophies as Hinduism and Jainism. Here in the UK, the Vegetarian Society was formed as long ago as 1847, and by the 1880s there were popular vegetarian restaurants in London. We are aware of modern vegetarians such as Linda McCartney, but previous famous veggies include the playwright George Bernard Shaw and Sir Isaac Pitman (the inventor of the famous shorthand method), who was Vice President of the society in the nineteenth century. The Vegetarian Society will be actively promoting this celebratory week, when there will be all sorts of special events, activities and promotions taking place. In honour of
the week they have created three tasty new recipes, Watercress and Blue Cheese Pasta, Warm Potato Salad, and Cauliflower and Carrot Terrine, all of which are available on the website www.vegsoc.org. Even if you are not vegetarian yourself, the chances are that at times you will be preparing meals for people who are, whether they’re your family or dinner guests. Even enthusiastic meat eaters don’t eat meat every day. So if you’re looking for inspiration, the Vegetarian Society website contains hundreds of vegetarian recipes, and you can search across these either by meal type, by ingredients or even by special occasion. Health issues are never far from the headlines and few of us can be unaware of the advice to eat our ‘Five a day’ pieces of fruit and vegetables. For further details, check out the site www.5aday.nhs.uk. Fruit and veg can help keep us fitter and healthier and are packed with vitamins and minerals and are also an excellent source of fibre and antioxidants. Again the Vegetarian Society is a great assistance, providing plenty of information, help and support. There are also local networks you can join and they even have their own cookery school which runs courses! So look out in your local area this week for any special events and offers. And if you can’t see any, just search out some vegetarian recipes and visit your local greengrocer.

One Thing At A Time by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon
The mind can be a funny old thing at times - one minute you can’t recall what you did yesterday and the next every last little detail of the last one, two, three years is played over and over again. But what happens when your mind is so cluttered up you want to hide away in a darkened room, or you are forgetful or bad tempered. and the minutes and hours of each day are taken up by this? Clearing your mind can seem like an impossible task but if you break this down into tiny pieces it can seem like one that you could achieve. Would you be surprised to know that this is the step that a lot of people take when they are trying to achieve a mammoth task? Writers are encouraged to write one or two hundred words on a daily basis, runners are encouraged to run for ten minutes, then twenty, then thirty, dancers are encouraged to work on one particular move at a time. So never try and tackle a cluttered mind in one sweep as it won’t work and will only make you feel worse. Pick a time of the day that you feel would suit you and work on clearing your mind of one or two things that are bothering you. It might just be the fact that you have lost the motivation to pick up that paintbrush or pencil and reminders seem to be everywhere; on the TV, in magazines, on your lounge wall. The first thing you need to do is find a spot that you feel is a place you can relax - the garden, the comfy old armchair, the shed, the car, the beach, the countryside, the local coffee shop. Set yourself a timeframe of thirty minutes to begin with and then increase to an hour if you feel that thirty minutes is not enough. Take that time and focus on that ‘thing’ that is taking up valuable space in your mind. Write a list of the good and bad points and then go deeper to find a solution to the bad points. It might just be as simple as finding a painting companion, or an alternative to how you sit or stand. There is an answer to most solutions but unless you take time to find out which one is the best suited to you than this ‘thing’ will plague your every thought and get in the way of you making progress. So why not give it a try and see how many of those ‘things’ you can sort out by taking one step at a time, or in this case one thought at a time.

Adolescent Problems & Exam Nerves As exam season approaches, local Hypnotherapist Liane Ulbricht-Kazan discusses ways to tackle adolescent problems and deal with exam nerves effectively. The teenage years can be challenging, as youngsters undergo major bodily changes, dealing with pressures and school life, criticism and hormonal changes. These pressures can cause feelings of low self-confidence and self-worth, which can results in feelings of inadequacy and poor performance. Teenagers display their frustration, anger, anxiety and stress in a variety of ways. When they start to have major problems with friends or family, or start to become forgetful, fractious or demotivated, this could be an indication that they are sufferring. As well as emotional symptoms, they may also present a range of physical symptoms including stomach upsets, tiredness and even hair loss. They may be combating bullies or other peer distractions, experiencing difficulties with revision and performance. This pressure can come from teachers, family and friends alike, or from within (perfectionism). Help may be needed! Prolonged periods of stress and anxiety can be very psychologically draining. This increases the amount of pressure and can result in young people developing other problems (e.g agoraphobia, social phobia, eating disorders). This may stop them building a social network and can affect them into adult life. Hypnotherapy helps by changing the subconscious responses, which people have to certain trigger situations, in order to maintain the ability to make a proper assessment of a situation, and react appropriately. Exams are important, but they are not life threatening! Hypnotherapists have a lot of techniques at their disposal to equip and empower people to deal with and perceive these issues in a new way. And as a result it’s not only the client’s immediate situation that is transformed, but they are also bestowed with valuable resources to support their entire future! I was born in the German coastal town of Anklam, and brought up with strong family values, along with my twin sister, and older brother & sister. With my mother as the strong centre of the family, education was always important for us, and it’s from her that I have inherited my strong work ethic and core values of equality, honesty and fairness. What did you do when you left school? At 18 I moved to Muenster, where I wanted to study psychology. However, I decided that I did not agree with the problem-focused approach and instead did a bachelor degree in finance. It was there that I became interested in everything related to what I now know is referred to as ‘Positive Psychology’; an interest that I followed and still do to this day. Moving to England was a kind of calling to me, when in 2004, much to the surprise of my family and friends, I one day decided to head over here and start a new life. My family have always been close. However, as with a lot of families we are now scattered all over, but always get together at least once a year. They understood that I needed to find my path, and so I did. Looking back, being a Hypnotherapist is the thing that makes sense of all I have done in the past. People and their attitudes towards life have always fascinated me. In fact, learning to understand how we can interact more effectively and stay in control has been a common theme. Even during my finance days I found that my interest in patterns and dynamics of behaviour would tend to lead me into niches, which would require solution-focused skills. The corporate world can be a great teacher and you learn to deal with resentment, anger, frustrations, breakdowns, personalities clashes, pressure, stress, bullying etc. I was often a mediator, and responsible for reorganising people, tasks and companies into new structures. This experience has proven to be so valuable for my work as a hypnotherapist now.
25 You could say that I am one of those people who loves to use holidays and leisure time to explore and study, and over the years underwent several courses of study (e.g practitioner in ‘Neuro Linguistic Programming’ NLP with Richard Bandler and ‘Electro Chrystal Therapy’ in London, life coaching in Germany, counselling to become an effective listener). But I can remember the moment very clearly when I decided to specialise in Hypnotherapy. It was whilst attending the ‘Happiness Course’ at The Clifton Practice in Bristol. This course was so inspiring for me. It draws heavily from the fields of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, and NLP, and of course Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. I later did my studies and now also practice there in addition to my regular days at ‘Nailsworth Natural Health Centre’. Any interests and hobbies? Well, my work is also my hobby. And I love to dance, to interact, and be in the great outdoors. However, my number one interest is definitely my little boy Eddie. What of your home life? We, my partner Sam and our son Eddie and I live in Berkeley, which is a good mid way point between my practices. Eddie’s now almost 2, and I just love watching him grow. We’ve had quite a few firsts this year already – first time with him on a bike, first family swim, first words, and sentences both in English and German, and even counting. Any plans for the future? I am really excited to now also be running courses in Happiness myself and working with it’s inventor, after having being so inspired by this all those years ago. Look out for details for the Nailsworth course. Additionally, I am also expanding my practice to include my partner Sam, who has been supporting me in the background since the beginning. His Hypnotherapy studies are now well underway, and he is offering free initial consultations and relaxation sessions at Nailsworth Natural Health Centre during Spring and Summer. This is a great way for people to find out more about how Hypnotherapy can help, whilst providing free relaxation sessions as a taster of what the centre has to offer. Established shrub borders and fruit trees would benefit from a good mulching of Westland Gro-Sure farmyard manure. Now is a great time to be sowing seeds. Lots of annuals and vegetable plants can be sown this month. Use a good quality seed compost or Jacks Magic multi purpose. Seed potatoes can now be planted, watch out for any late frosts and cover with fleece to protect young delicate shoots. The Garden Centre is now full with a huge range of plants. Small herbaceous plants can go in now, I recommend planting in groups of 3 for a quicker, bolder display. New shrubs can fill in any gaps that you have, just remember to keep them all watered if we have a dry spell. Lawns will be starting to grow very quickly now and will require a regular weekly cut. If moss is a problem treat with lawn sand now to kill off the moss. A monthly feed with Miracle Gro Lawn Feed will keep your lawn a lush green colour.

WED 1ST - Nailsworth & District Flower Arrangement Society will meet as usual at 7.30 at the Town Hall, Nailsworth for a Demonstration by Sally Taylor entitled ’Tales of a Gloucestershire lass’. The competition will be for a ’Spring Delight’ - a design using all spring flowers/foliage. New members/visitors welcome to join in.
