A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind What Causes Stress? It’s not the events of our lives, which necessarily cause the stress response, rather the way we think about and respond to those events. So, even though the event itself is often blamed, it does not have to be the direct cause of the negative and undesirable psychological state that people often refer to as being or feeling stressed. Brain chemistry and neurological functioning, combined with physiology, and other psychological factors are what combine to cause the kind of state referred to as ‘stress’. But what causes stress to be triggered?

Liane Ulbricht-Kazan DHP HPD

There are many factors to consider when determining the external triggers that exist in a person’s life, but it’s often those events, which relate to our health, relationships, and security, that we talk about here. Apart from being stressful, the experience is often experienced as depression, anxiety, or even anger.

MNCH (Reg)

Sam Little DSFH

Each and every anxiety we have is caused by negative thinking. Negative thoughts about the past, present, or future are all accumulated and stored for our minds to process later. Of course, when we reach our limits, things can get out of hand. Local Hypnotherapist, Liane Ulbricht-Kazan comments “what’s important is to address the thought processes surrounding the events of our lives, because in life, we know that things happen, and that’s not always something we can control”. As the imagination is taken over by a cycle of negative thinking, we may perceive things, that aren’t true or that we cannot change anyway. Our different perceptions, backgrounds, emotional resilience and ability to cope play a big role in how stressed we become in certain situations. At the heart of people’s issues, are our understandings and perceptions of the world, and how the interact with it. If you would like help in understanding how you can learn to deal with stress, remain in control of your thoughts and your emotions, then perhaps Hypnotherapy would be right for you.

12 Alternative gifts for Christmas

Christmas comes but once a year and whatever way you look at it, it's a special season in lots of ways. On the one hand, there's all the Christmas festivities, on the other, the weather can be brutal and it's open season for coughs and colds. We've therefore come up with some seasonal, healthy and fun DIYs, which you can use to treat yourself or give as gifts. Frankincense, Lavender and Pine Room Fragrance For this you will need a carrier oil. Since this is meant for use as a room fragrance rather than going on the skin, any unscented (or mildly scented) vegetable oil would do. Sunflower oil is a good choice as it is both affordable and widely available. The rule of thumb is to use three drops of essential oil to each 10ml of carrier oil and it is important to measure this as essential oils are very strong and have to be used diluted. Please also note, it's three drops in total rather than three drops of each oil, so if you're making a 10ml bottle of this blend, use one drop of each oil and so on. Frankincense is very soothing, lavender is gently uplifting and pine is invigorating. As a menthol fragrance it's also a decongestant so good for stuffy noses and it has anti-bacterial properties so it helps to give battling immune systems a boost. Ginger, Nutmeg and Sweet Orange Bath Salts You can use any type of salt for this and you can also mix in a small quantity of bicarbonate of soda. As a guideline, for each 100g of carrier base use 80-100g salt and 0-20g bicarbonate of soda. For every 100g of base you will need a maximum of 1ml of essential oil, which is about 20 drops, again this is in total rather than per oil. Ginger and nutmeg are both good for the digestion (after all that Christmas food) and the respiratory system. Nutmeg is also good for the blood circulation. Sweet orange is an all-round tonic and antiseptic. All of these oils have positive benefits from an emotional perspective too. Using them in a bath is great because all the steam really helps get the oils moving and inhaled, but if you only have a shower, or want to give this as a gift to someone who does, you can use the same combination in a carrier oil to make a skin moisturiser. Since it will be going on the skin, you might want to look at sweet almond or a ready-made massage oil base, but sunflower oil is also a perfectly reasonable choice. Use the ratios as for the room burner oil. Sandalwood, Black Pepper and Tea Tree Body Scrub It's important to exfoliate in winter (and follow up with a good moisturiser). You can create a great body scrub using sugar as a base and in the same ratios as described for the bath salts. Sandalwood is great for the skin, soothing and cleaning it. It's also good for dealing with coughs. Black pepper is antioxidant and antibacterial, which is good for the body as a whole. It is also good at stimulating the blood circulation and this can be particularly beneficial to anyone who suffers from rheumatism or arthritis, especially in winter when symptoms are often at their worst. Tea tree is a menthol and has very similar qualities to pine. This blend is also a good choice for anyone who feels their get up and go has got up and gone, perfect for use in the shower on dark, cold winter mornings. These gorgeous essential oil treats are sure to make you feel wonderful, whatever the weather and in a lovely bag, or pretty bottle, tied with a ribbon they make lovely Christmas gift.s As with all essential oils keep out of the reach of children and pets and use externally. Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Hammersmith and lived in London for the first five years of my life. My parents then decided to pursue the country life and we relocated to a small rural town in Shropshire. My two brothers and I have fond memories of fishing, camping and exploring the woods and green fields of Shropshire as children. What did you do when you left school? After completing A levels in Design, PE & Geography I had a 1 year break in education and moved into a shared house in Worcester with fellow musicians to focus on developing our rock band “Mexican Standoff”. Sadly working 40 hour weeks in Sainsburys warehouse didn’t leave us much time for any band practice and Mexican Standoff fell by the wayside before we had even really found our feet. The guitar was hung up for a while and I decided to undertake a degree at Worcester University studying Environmental Science and Physical Geography. An interesting few years followed. During university life I developed a new hobby in mountain biking. It had become something of an addiction with the adrenalin from the “close shaves” in combination with the aerobic fitness benefits appealing to me most. A year working in Whistler, Canada for 1 year followed. Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

17 It was an action packed year with most of my free time spent hurtling down snowy slopes on my snowboard, having heart stopping encounters with black bears while mountain biking and swimming in stunning glacier fed blue lakes surrounded in snow capped mountains What led you into the business you have now? I spent 5 years building up as much experience and training working as a tree surgeon and a woodland manager in Somerset. It became very clear to myself that I wanted to run my own business and do things my way. Treeation – Tree Surgery & Woodland Management was formed in 2010 after we relocated from Bristol to Stroud. The challenges of starting a business, the risk taking and freedom appealed strongly to me. Any interests or hobbies? My main interests in life are music, natural history and environmental conservation. I spend a good amount of my free time camping, walking, biking and foraging in the Cotwolds. My hobbies include doing a martial art called “ki aikido” and playing the guitar. What of your home life? I live in Stroud with my wonderful family. My wife is a yoga teacher and we have a beautiful 5 year old daughter. My wife is Spanish so most of our holidays are spent lounging around on hot sunny beaches and eating amazing Spanish food in Cadiz where her family are. Plans for the future? To keep building up Treeation Tree Surgery & Woodland Management especially focusing on arboricultural consultancy and developing our woodfuel business that deals with eco-friendly, locally sourced kindling and firewood. To contact Patrick please call 01453 497047/Mob: 07702 www.treeation.co.uk/email:info@treeation.co.uk

CHRISTMAS TREE TOP TIPS provided by Stella Gray of Highfield Garden World

Our Christmas trees are in! Come and choose the perfect tree to bring Christmas to life in your home. From table top treasures to majestic 7 footers, we have a fresh tree to suit everyone. We also offer a lovely selection of individual artificial trees. Our Christmas department is a wonderland full of decorations just waiting to adorn your homes for the festive season and there are gifts a-plenty to suit all tastes. With plenty of free parking and a fantastic, brand new restaurant why not come along to Highfield where Christmas is made easy? It’s a one-stop Christmas shop!!

Types of Fresh Cut Christmas Trees Norway Spruce (Picea Abies) is the traditional Christmas tree which was historically grown close by and brought into the house at Christmas. It has short green needles and that wonderful great pine scent which will fill the room. Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) is a Needlefast variety which has been introduced to this country in recent years and has become the most popular variety because it does not drop its needles so readily in the home. It still has the classic Christmas tree shape and has long, soft, dark green needles.

Caring for your tree • •

• •

Keep your tree outside, in the open, until you are ready to put your tree up and decorate it. When you bring your tree in, saw a small section off the stump and then place it straight into a waterholding stand or bucket of water (a fresh cut tree can drink up to 5 litres of water a day). Try and keep the tree away from a source of direct heat (i.e. a fire or radiator). Finally, keep giving your tree a drink of water - you will be amazed at what it can drink!

Don’t forget to bring back your fresh cut tree after Christmas to be recycled. Highfield Garden World, Bristol Road, Whitminster, Gloucester, GL2 7PB Tel: 01452 741444 Email: info@highfieldgardenworld.co.uk

Dursley Neighbourhood

Policing Team

Over the past few months Dursley Neighbourhood Policing Team had experienced some anti-social behaviour amongst youngsters in the local area. In an attempt to tackle this problem the policing team made contact with Rednock school and asked for their assistance and co-operation. Rednock School welcomed this approach and offered the use of their all-weather football pitch for the youngsters to play on. This joint initiative has proved very successful with a group of youngsters regularly playing football on the pitch. This group have since managed to get funding to buy their own football T-shirts and they have joined a 6-a-side team. Jake Woodward who is involved in the scheme said: “I’ve never really had a positive relationship with the police but this has certainly changed and we are thankful for what they have done.” Jordan Warner said: “I would like to thank the police and Rednock School for setting this up. Because of this we have taken it upon ourselves to build links with other football teams and arrange matches. It has even helped us enter a 6-a-side tournament – something that we would never have done before!”. PCSO Joshua Griffiths stated that “This has been a very successful initiative. It has helped us build new bridges that had previously broken with these group of young adults and it has helped us by reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in Dursley. A win-win situation.”

What have the Neighbourhood Team been doing? Since the last newsletter Neighbourhood Team officers have been busy tackling issues of concern for our local community. Officers from the NPT have been actively targeting antisocial behaviour where we have issued several antisocial behaviour warnings to problem youths, placed 2 youths on anti social behaviour contracts with curfews and conditions to abide, we have taken positive action on underage street drinkers, seized several quantities of controlled drugs by the use of directed police search powers, we have successfully issued section 59 police reform notices for anti social driving – which essentially means that any further report of nuisance driving will result in vehicle seizures. Officers have been present at several community events and are in the process of delivering road safety school initiatives as well as preparing for a burglary prevention scheme and helped to deliver a safe youth function. This is just some of the work that has been undertaken by the team in conjunction with responding to live policing incidents, investigating recorded crime reports and proactive police patrols.

29 Neighbourhood Team assist in safe delivery of Youth Event Neighbourhood Policing Team officers were on hand to help deliver a sixth form event at a popular nightclub in Dursley. The event arranged by a local high school saw a presence of partnership working between Capones club and police. Officers seized alcohol from underage party goers and created an amnesty bin for those to surrender their alcohol. Capones staff searched all those on entry and took a proactive approach to minimise disruption to local residents. The event went without a single incident or complaint and was hailed a success. Among some of the items seized were spirits, beers, lagers, miniatures and even a rather ingenious way of smuggling alcohol into the venue by pouring into sandwich bags. Officers will be on hand to help deliver any future event with local establishments and sixth formers.

Websites Dursley Neigbourhood Policing Team would like to thank Rednock School for allowing us to advertise on their website. This shows the positive partnership between the School and Dursley Neighbourhood Policing team. It advertises the Policing Team and the work carried out by Officers on educating the students on various issues. If needed, the students will be able to contact officers for any help and advice on any problem they might be or are encountering.

And I finally just to make you aware that PCSO 9248 Oliver Clark will be holding “Drop In Sessions” in Uley and Nympsfield. This is an opportunity for you as residents to bring any concerns to the attention of your local Policing Team. Uley (Outside the Community Shop, The Street,
