Dursley Neighbourhood

Policing Team

Op Switch Dursley Neighbourhood Team have been busy introducing Gloucestershire Constabulary’s new Community Engagement Vehicle aptly named CEV. PCSO Oli Clark and PCSO Josh Griffiths have been out around Dursley promoting Home Security and Target Hardening as part of Operation Switch. CEV’s function in Op Switch is to offer reassurance and advice to communities that have fallen victim to Burglary related crime. We have had a really positive response from residents all over Dursley attending and raising concerns they have with us. As a Neighbourhood Team we are looking to utilise CEV & NEV our two Mobile Police Stations at various events, pop up surgeries and reassurance visits in and around Dursley. So if you see us in your road or the Town Centre please come over and say hello!!

Rednock Sixth Form PCSO Joshua Griffiths recently held a burglary stand for the students at Rednock Sixth Form. The purpose behind this is because statistically student areas are more likely to be targeted for burglary. This is usually because they bring their expensive gadgets and they aren’t as security conscious. PCSO Joshua Griffiths put together a security pack, containing leaflets on how to protect their property and a free UV pen to read before they head off into the big wide world!

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster With everything coming to life now is an excellent time to start feeding our plants. Established shrub borders and fruit trees would benefit from a good mulching of Westland Gro-Sure farmyard manure. Now is a great time to be sowing seeds. Lots of annuals and vegetable plants can be sown this month. Use a good quality seed compost or Jacks Magic multi purpose. Seed potatoes can now be planted, watch out for any late frosts and cover with fleece to protect young delicate shoots. The Garden Centre is now full with a huge range of plants. Small herbaceous plants can go in now, I recommend planting in groups of 3 for a quicker, bolder display. New shrubs can fill in any gaps that you have, just remember to keep them all watered if we have a dry spell. Lawns will be starting to grow very quickly now and will require a regular weekly cut. If moss is a problem treat with lawn sand now to kill off the moss. A monthly feed with Miracle Gro Lawn Feed will keep your lawn a lush green colour.

A Peek into the Past April 1953 - Watson and Crick On 25th April 1953 two Cambridge University scientists published their answer to one of the most fundamental questions of biology - how do living things reproduce themselves? James D Watson and Francis Crick described the structure of a chemical called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA in a in an article published in Nature magazine. DNA is the material that makes up genes which pass hereditary characteristics from generation to the next.

Watson and Crick discovered that DNA consists of a double helix of two strands coiled around each other. The strands are made up of complementary elements that fit together and when uncoiled can produce two copies of the original. The modest duo began their article: "We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA). This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest." Indeed it was. They had discovered the secret of life.

Karen Mellerup will be familiar to many people in Dursley. As well as being the Dursley Funeral Service funeral director, she has lived here all her life. I was born in Berkley hospital and I went to school at Highfields Junior and Rednock Secondary. I took a course in retail management and for a while worked at W H Thomas & Son in Wotton Under Edge. How did you become a funeral director? I started working just three days a week, arranging the funerals and looking after the relatives. We had a funeral director who was with the families on the day of the funeral whilst I stayed in the office. I thought ‘I’d like to follow the whole job through’. When you look after a family you want to be there from the beginning to the end, helping them all the way. Around the same time my manager said ‘You know it’d be really good if you were with your families. Would you like to conduct the funerals on the day?’ Even though I wanted to I was hesitant and I thought ‘Can I do this?’ I was nervous at first, but our chauffeurs looked after me and I got my confidence. Shortly after that I was promoted to Funeral Director and that’s what I’ve been for two years now. My job is a passion – it never feels like work.

Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

23 . What do you like most about the job? Helping people. It’s a terribly difficult time and if you can just make it that bit more easy for them – guide them and support them – then you feel you’ve done something useful. Believe it or not, I also like the social side. A lot of people come in here after the funerals to let me know how they are and to have a chat. It’s good that my relationship with my clients doesn’t end with the service itself. I’m always here for them and it’s good to see how they’re getting along. The kettle’s always on! You give talks. Yes, I do. I talk to groups who are interested in my work, or to people are thinking of planning for their own funeral. We have funeral plans for people who want to do this, so I find myself talking a lot about those. But my talk covers everything that I do. What do you do when you’re not working? I love to go walking. There’s some beautiful countryside round here, especially around the Cotswold Way routes, so when I can, I put my boots and anorak on. Last year I took part in the Twilight Walk in aid of Cotswold Care Hospice. I am also proud of having been involved in the GL11 Community Project. We helped mums get back to work after having children. I also love spending time with my two grandsons. And for the future? More of the same, I hope. I love living in Dursley. I like the people. It’s my home. I love the job that I do and if I can continue to help people I will be quite content. For further details of Dursley Funeral Service please see page 11

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind Managing Stress to avoid Burnout April is Stress awareness month. According to Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in 2014/15 stress was responsible 9.9 million lost working days! But it’s not just the economy that suffers, and we can all do something about dealing with life’s challenges. But what can we do about all this? 1. Make it challenging, but not overwhelming. Stress is not always a bad thing. The problem is not actually that stress exists, but how much of it there is, how well we feel we can handle ourselves when confronted with it, and how we apply stress management techniques to use the stress as a stepping stone instead of a stumbling block. We need to re-frame the task, so that we can feel good about the achievements we do make, instead of worrying about the ones we’re still getting round to.

2. Ensure a proper work-life balance The saying “all work and no play makes jack a dull boy” is very much applicable. Without rest and recreation, we don’t have a way to empty our stress buckets, which is a metaphor used by hypnotherapists to describe the things that we’ve not yet processed. In the long run, this will stifle creativity and our ability to concentrate and solve problems. It also causes major strain in relationships. 3. Create a positive environment within. Human beings thrive within a community setting. This is why primitive man existed in tribes and villages. We get a certain reward when we have positive interactions with others, and that reward came in the feel-good chemical that our brains produces called serotonin, which is produces when we go in for positive activity, interaction, and thought. 4. If it works, do more of it There are lots of approaches to helping people deal with stress, including many therapies that really do offer great stress relief. But a good stress management strategy is more about making lasting changes that will help you avoid the accumulation of stress in the first place. And great way to gather up the tools and habits you need to achieve this is Hypnotherapy.

Best Western The Gables strikes gold with Green Tourism Business Scheme Best Western The Gables Hotel in Falfield, near Bristol has been awarded for its commitment to excellent environmental practices in the form of an internationally recognised prestigious gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). The Green Tourism Business scheme evaluates businesses in areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste management and environmentally friendly purchasing policies and it recognises companies that have taken significant steps to minimise the environmental impact of their activities. Members of the scheme are assessed every two years and depending on the standards achieved, receive a bronze, silver or gold award. In order to achieve their gold award, The Gables has introduced many energy saving measures to reduce the waste of resources and promote sustainable business practices, including installing a biomass system which provides all the heating and hot water for the building. The Green Tourism Scheme judges were particularly impressed with The Gables’ knowledgeable in-house “Green Team” which meets on a monthly basis to share ideas and to develop further initiatives, and by the staff’s awareness of green issues generally. Chief Executive, Angela Burns said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded gold status by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. This award recognises the staff’s genuine enthusiasm and long term commitment to reducing the hotel’s carbon footprint while still providing excellent service for our guests. We will continue to work hard to improve our environmental performance still further in the future.” Please mention DC&U Directory when responding to adverts
