A Peek into the Past January 1st 45BC - New Year is celebrated! New Year's Day was first celebrated on January 1st in 45BC. The Roman dictator Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar on the advice of the astronomer Sosigenes of Alexandria. Caesar added 67 days to the year 46 BC in order to repair the damage done to the imperfect Roman calendar by the passage of time. A Julian year was 365.25 days long so an extra day was added every four years. Unfortunately the Julian calendar introduced an error of one day every 128 years which would eventually cause the

seasons to drift. The Gregorian - or modern - calendar was adopted in 1582 to correct this error. A Gregorian year is 365.2425 days long which means that a one day error is introduced every 3300 years. This is corrected by having only 97 leap years every 400 years. The way it’s worked out is as follows: Every year divisible by four is a leap year but every year divisible by 100 is not unless its also divisible by 400 in which case it is! The next time we skip a leap year is 2100.

Welcome in an organic 2017! The dawn of a new year is the ideal start of something new, improved and better. For us, it is the start of something a whole lot more organic. That’s right. Our plan for 2017 is to welcome in the world of organic produce. All our treatments will use organic, vegan friendly and locally sourced products where possible and our nail polishes will be 5 free. But why? We have realised that there are a whole host of benefits to being organic and decided to embrace it whole heartedly. Thinking that you might like to do the same? To share the organic love, we have put together some of the top benefits of going organic and what it can mean for your health, your wellbeing and not to mention the world around you. It is likely to be fresher As it doesn’t contain the preservatives to keep it fresh, organic food is often sourced from farms close to where it is sold. This means, that it is often bought by you in a fresher state then foods that have added preservatives. There are fewer pesticides in organic food Whilst it isn’t necessarily pesticide free, it is believed that organically produced foods contain lower levels of fungicides, herbicides and insecticides than their none organic counterparts. Organically reared animals are raised naturally By this we mean that they are not fed the antibiotics, animal byproducts or growth hormones that other farmed animals are. Not only this but they are also given much more space to roam and full access to outdoor spaces. But it isn’t full of GMO Genetically Modified Organisms are plants who have had their DNA altered to allow them to be resistant to pesticides. They are entirely un-natural and have to be genetically engineered. The levels of GMOs is much lower in organic foods then it is in non-organic foods. Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

It is better for the environment It isn’t only you who benefits from organic food, the world around us also does too. Organic farming is thought to reduce pollution, reduce the erosion of soil, use less energy and conserve water. Not only this, but organic farming is less intrusive in the area where the farm is based, which is better for the local wildlife. Organic food is packed full with nutrients Whilst all foods contain nutrients in some form. It is thought that organic food contains higher levels of important nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids. All vital to our health and wellbeing. So, now you know just what makes organic a good choice. Why not make an organic life your 2017 resolution? After all, why wouldn’t you want to feel healthier, fitter and happier for the next 12 months? Article by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon in Eastcombe For more information visit www.vanillamoon.biz

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind

Resolutions begin NOW for the Best Christmas Ever For many the Advent & Christmas are special times filled with positive expectation and excitement. For others, it’s a time of increased pressure and frenzy. For most, it’s perhaps a bit of both! Most people would agree with the ideal of Christmas, a kind of stereotype to live up to, and enjoy. We have some strong traditions and heritage, as well as positive personal experiences. There are also many societal associations with Christmas. However, we also have our own personal subjective experiences, which can be anyting but. Christmas itself presents for many people a very potent time. Due to an increase in stress in the run-up, then mixed with high expectations, and sometimes layers of guilt, unspoken truths, and personal disappointments or other emotional factors etc. To varying extent, expectations are based on experience. The brain endeavors to make sense of the world it sees by referencing incoming signals with past experiences. You can think of these as behavioral or belief templates, which influence how we tend to respond (sometimes inappropriately) in a given situation. These are the subconsicous reactions that we all have, but which do not always conspire to get us the best results. Anxiety, Stress, Depression and Anger are all emotional reactions that have everything to do with how we think. All negative thinking is converted into anxiety, which is stored in what we call a ‘stress bucket’. Unfortunately, this bucket can overflow, which explains a lot of issues for which people may seek professional help and support or treatment. More stress translates into less control. This is why, despite best intentions, many people find themselves responding to things in ways that are not so helpful in getting the most form things. Often this actually increases the stress even further. That is why, if we want to get the best from Christmas, it’s important to get good at the habits that reduce stress and increase control. We do this by consciously and purposefully thinking, acting, and interacting positively, making sure that we remain relaxed and reminding ourselves what is really important, and appropriately helpful in any given situation. Once we are clear that this is the goal, then we can look for opportunities to achieve this. When we do this well, everybody benefits, and we really can feel good about ourselves in the process. So, why not start now? You don’t need to save your best intentions for the new year.

What can you do to make this the best Christmas ever?

Organising the company Christmas party should be fun, but whether you are an event planner or you have been given the job of sorting out this year’s Christmas party for the first time, we know that far too often this item on your “to do” list can just add to your stress. At The Gables we have a wealth of experience of planning and hosting successful events of all kinds (and we love Christmas!) so we have put together this handy guide to make planning your perfect Christmas party as painless as possible. It takes two (or more!) It can be daunting to shoulder the entire responsibility of organising the biggest social event of the year so if you have a budget available, consider hiring an events company to help you, or why not recruit a right hand man or woman to assist with all the details? Some wise party planners establish a party committee – it sounds exhausting, we know, but not half as exhausting as doing it all by yourself! Timing is everything A vital tip is to start early to secure your preferred venue as everyone’s diaries fill up fast, but if you’ve left it too late and your chosen venue is already booked this year, consider holding your party in November or January which will avoid clashes with existing arrangements for your colleagues and may be a little cheaper too. How much? Try and establish a clear idea of your party budget at the very start. Another key question is who is paying? This might be stating the obvious, but it’s wise to let people know if they are expected to contribute towards their own place or if the company is footing the bill, to avoid any awkwardness! It’s good to share Do you need a venue all to yourself or can you bear to share? Obviously with exclusive hire you have the flexibility to customise the party, but joining a party night with other like minded companies can be a much simpler party to plan and it’s a more affordable option too. Theme or no theme? Okay, so Christmas itself is quite a theme! But maybe you have other ideas? What about celebrating music of a certain era or working with your chosen venue to plan an extra special menu? Race nights and casino nights can also prove popular, not to mention a ‘winter wonderland’ feel. Alternatively, of course, you can trust your venue to provide a tried and tested formula to offer you peace of mind that everything is in place for a fantastic night – The Gables’ Party Nights and Retro Party Nights are proving to be very popular!

Love in the Christmas air Is your party going to be for just staff, or are partners invited too? You may think that the latter option is straightforward (and here’s hoping it is!), but it can also be a minefield. Don’t make single guests feel that they have to miss out on the fun, let them know they are welcome to bring a friend too. Getting there Help avoid guests worrying about whether they can have a drink or two and book taxis or maybe hire a minibus for them. If you go that extra mile to make the journeys to and from the venue as smooth as possible, your guests will thank you for it. If they would rather make their own way, pass on details of local taxi firms with the party invites and encourage them to make that call, sooner rather than later. Or why not book rooms for your guests to stay over and relax? Most venues offer preferential rates for party goers, especially if you are booking a number of rooms – at The Gables you can stay after the party from £69 per double or twin room, which includes a full English breakfast. In the frame Hire a professional photographer to capture special moments at the party, especially if it’s going to be a very glamorous affair. You can commission special frames for sharing photos (with permission!) on social media and have a whole host of props – from feather boas and oversized glasses to something maybe a bit more classy, to help the evening go with a swing. Alternatively, hire a photo booth who can do it all for you! Saying thank you A Christmas party can be the perfect setting to reward and recognise staff who have worked hard and gone the extra mile. Do you want speeches, or a full-blown awards night? Think about what really works for you and make it happen – the more unique your event, the more people will love it. Attention to detail Are there little touches you can add to your party to make it extra special? How about branded Christmas gifts for people attending, a fun Secret Santa during the meal or canapés and a glass of mulled wine or Buck’s Fizz on arrival? At The Gables, we will be happy to help with the finishing touches. A couple more things – if you’re joining a shared party, don’t forget name cards so everyone knows where they are sitting, and remember to take a copy of the guests’ menu choices with you, as often people may have forgotten what they pre-ordered! Charity begins at Christmas Can you put something back and nominate a good cause to also benefit from your celebration? From a silent auction to asking people to donate direct to a charity, now is the perfect time to do something lovely and help give your guests the warm glow of knowing they are sharing the Christmas spirit! Join the Festive Celebrations at The Gables With glistening baubles on the trees, twinkling Christmas lights and the warmest of welcomes from friendly staff, there is no better place to celebrate the festive season with family, friends and colleagues than The Gables. Christmas tree care

Christmas is a time for making merry and for many of us this usually involves a large consumption of food and drink. Each time you pop a cork, clink glasses or put the kettle on, please spare a thought for your guest in the corner of the room who will probably be in desperate need of a liquid pick-me-up. So undemanding is the humble Christmas tree, all it requires in return for bringing festive cheer to your home is a regular supply of water. Nothing fancy, straight from the tap will do, just as you would with a vase of cut flowers. It’s actually perfectly natural for your tree to shed its needles but it will do so more quickly if you allow it to dry out. Needle retention is something to consider when buying your tree. The Nordmann fir is now a firm favourite for those seeking a real tree as its beautiful, dark green needles are very slow to drop. However, it’s more expensive than our traditional Christmas tree, the Norway spruce. This has gained a reputation for needle loss but giving it enough water and the right care can limit this. And nothing beats this tree for that traditional scent. It practically shouts Christmas! Also good for scent is the Fraser fir which has a lovely citrusy fragrance, shiny silver-green foliage and good needle retention. It has a narrower shape than most making it great for tight spaces. If you want something a little different, consider a blue spruce. With its duskyblue foliage, this tree has a natural conical shape. The needles are prickly but hold well and the tree looks especially lovely with silver baubles. We have all these trees available at the nursery but whichever you choose, you can minimise needle drop with these following tips. Before bringing in, cut 2.5cm off the base of the trunk. This will help with water absorption. Choose a location in the house away from direct heat such as an open fire or radiator. Secure your tree in a water-holding stand or bucket. Keep checking the water levels – you will be surprised at how much your tree drinks! With the right care, your tree should last for more than four weeks. You can also make good use of it after Christmas by ensuring it’s recycled!

Happy tree hunting and merry Christmas!

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business. The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.” Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. “Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

Comedy Corner A ducks walks into a bar and asks, "Got any grapes?" The bartender, confused, tells the ducks that no, his bar doesn't serve grapes. The duck thanks him and leaves. The next day, the duck returns and says, "Got any grapes?" Again, the bartender tells him that, “No, the bar does not serve grapes, has never served grapes, and, furthermore, will never serve grapes.” The duck, a little ruffled, thanks him and leaves. The next day, the duck returns, but before he can say anything, the bartender begins to yell: ''Listen, duck! This is a bar! We do not serve grapes and if you ever ask for grapes again, I will nail your little duck beak to the bar!'' The duck is silent for a moment, and then asks, ''Got any nails?'' Confused, the bartender says “No”! 'Good!'' says the duck. ''Got any grapes?”

The Last Minute? It’s not too late to find the perfect gift Some people are just downright impossible to shop for which is why you’ve put off buying anything until now. In this case, present them with a written promise to take them shopping for something they really want. For some people it really is better to get their input before buying.

Are you ready for Christmas? Are you so organised that you bought everything in the January sales for gift-giving twelve months later? If you answered “yes”, then there’s no need to read on. However, if you’re like me, Christmas has once again taken you completely by surprise. I suspect we all go into denial at the point when the first Christmas decorations arrive in the shops around about August! Normally we’d panic and snatch the first vaguely suitable gift from the nearest available shop. But wait! Last minute gifts are never well thought out, are they? The adage “it’s the thought that counts” is actually incredibly important. People would rather receive a small, carefully chosen gift than a hastily grabbed box of bath products that scream “this will do”! Don’t panic. Most shops will be open on Christmas Eve, so you can really leave it until the absolute last minute if you plan a little first. Make a list of who you need to buy for and spend time really thinking about those people. What do they like? What would they appreciate? Keeping the recipient in mind and choosing a thoughtful gift is the only way to succeed at this late stage.

Another heartfelt refrain is “what do I get the person who has everything?” The answer is… a box to put it all in. Whether this is an unusual jewellery box, a useful sewing chest or colourful, personalised storage containers for children, you can’t go wrong with an attractive box. Donate the gift of your time. Offer to babysit so parents can take a welldeserved break. Spend a day gardening for someone. Buy tickets for a concert, cinema, sporting event or a play and take the family. Organise a surprise weekend break or holiday and present the tickets on Christmas Day. Bring some nostalgia to Christmas with family-friendly board games. Introduce extra food with a gourmet gift hamper. A beautiful tree ornament will hold memories every year when it comes out again. Students will always appreciate money. Don’t even attempt to work out what the ‘in-thing’ is as it will surely change next week. If you’re still stuck, there are always gift vouchers. Spabreaks, restaurant vouchers, experience days, animal adoption and cookery courses are unusual vouchers to give. Last minute Christmas gifts don’t have to come from the shops. Use your imagination and take some time to think about what they would really welcome. Have a happy and stress-free Christmas!
