Garden View This month - Love is in the air! What do you buy the gardener in your life for Valentine’s Day? Flowers are no good...we have gardens full of the things, and most of the gardeners I know, myself included, prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment. The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants. There are so many variables. The plant not only has to suit the taste of the gardener in question but satisfy trickier issues such as whether it’s too invasive; whether it will suit the soil and even whether it might poison the gardener’s dog or worse, children! It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so I’ve put together a few horticultural Valentine suggestions which should render your favourite gardener weak at the knees. Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares we’re ‘head-gardener. They’re the height of naff and anyway, we have plenty of old, comfy clothes which do the job. However, if you can find one, we would love a tough tunic or apron-like affair, preferably thorn-proof, and with lots of deep pockets so our secateurs don’t fall out! Then there are wellies. Gardening folk love wellies. We prefer something with a thick sole but there’s so much choice out there! I love bright and cheerful wellies but for the ultimate in warmth and breathability I can recommend a proper Goretex pair...sheer luxury, with a price tag to match!

A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back about £40 minimum and last but a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer. Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Ideally they’ll be stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use. Hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day. I’ve lost count of the number of cold cups of tea I’ve drunk! The canny Valentine who gave me an insulated mug with a lid could expect a very warm reception indeed. Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers. Often we’ll spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.

A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will earn you Valentine brownie points. Don’t go too large because they’re heavy when full. 3-4 litres is about the right size.

le i f ro well r P e k ple aw ress

o C Pearriet Haird H nic ga r O

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and lived in that area until I was five when my parents moved to Nailsworth. I was brought up in Nailsworth and attended the primary school there and then progressed to Archway Secondary School. What did you do after you left school?

After I left school I did a one year art foundation course in Stroud which led to a place at Central Saint Martins in London where I started a degree in theatre design. I was in London for four years, studying, working and enjoying life. I eventually moved back to Stroud– gave in to the pull of the hills- and took a job at Summerbees hair salon in Stroud where I did my training. What happened after that?

After leaving to have my second child I decided to try self-employment and went mobile. It was a tough time and I learnt a lot about running a small business and managing money until at last all my hard work started to pay off and I became busier and busier. How did you become interested in Organic hairdressing?

One evening researching the things that I find most important (healthy food and cosmetics) I stumbled across a new concept to me, professional herbal and healthy hair colour! It took me about five or six months to really make that first step to order the products to try them out. It was all thanks to one particular client that was so interested in using the alternative colour, she gave me a good nudge to try them out-and on her! Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

23 What happened next? Having learnt the theory behind the products and the science of how they work

and why they are better for our health, I realised I did not want to use the mainstream colours any longer but I also knew I now had to try and convince and convert all my clients! However, this actually proved easier than I thought and once people had tried them they were amazed at how different and healthy their hair became and how the tones of the colours looked so natural and without the brassy tone that comes with mainstream colours. I then began trying to find styling products and shampoos that had the same ethos as the colours, that were as natural as possible and without the unhealthy chemicals like SLS or parabens. This actually proved quite difficult but I did eventually find a range that ticked all the boxes and on top of that actually worked and this was John Masters Organics. So by this time I was a fully organic and herbal hairdresser, only using products that contained no harmful ingredients and I became so busy! It became apparent that there had been a gap in the market and that there was no one offering a service like mine in the five valleys and a bit beyond. What was I to do? I was so busy I could not take on any new clients, should I tick along happy doing what I was doing? This was quite appealing as by this time I had a three and a six year old! What did you decide to do?

The decision was finally made for me when I went on a training day at an organic salon in London and I was inspired. I knew then that this was what I needed to do. During the next six months I was to write and rewrite business plan after business plan trying to make it affordable. In the end a loan was just not possible and I began to realise this would not happen. However, by chance I saw an advert for a shop to rent. I made enquires and found that it could be possible-I had ÂŁ2,000 in my ISA and I went for it, challenge on! I managed to stick to the budget and here I am now with my own organic salon. What of the future?

I am aiming to build the business keeping to the ethos that I have set out and to keep challenging the norm of a working salon.

Valentine’s on a Budget By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon

Valentine’s Day can end up being one of the most expensive declarations of love but it doesn’t have to be. Who said love is counted in pounds? Showing your partner that you love them does not have to break the bank and sometimes the simplest things are the best. They are even better when they are unique to the person on the receiving end. Do you remember when you were younger and you made cards at school? Why not surprise your loved one with a handmade card that is definitely more meaningful. Handmade gifts are also a great way of showing your love and if you happen to be good at a particular thing (cooking, gardening, painting, poetry) then why not showcase your skills to the person who means the most. Love vouchers are also a great way to show your love without worrying about the expense and in some cases much more appreciated. These can also be handmade and there is no reason why a bit of humour cannot be added to the love. Who says love has to always be about hearts and flowers? In the age of the internet more and more discount websites are springing up and there are plenty of fabulous offers that would be perfect for a Valentine’s treat. You might even find that due to the amazing discounts on offer Valentines’ Day can be twice as special with not one but two wonderful treats. If you fancied making a weekend of it, clubbing together and renting a cottage for a weekend can be both romantic and a huge amount of fun and when shared with close friends can be the icing on the cake. Valentine’s Day was once a day of secrets but over the years it has become less so which might be good news if you are planning a Valentine’s on a budget. Maybe that is exactly what your other half is doing too? And not everyone wants to be surprised. Why not decide between you what this Valentine’s Day should hold for you? You might want to forgo cards and presents and just spend the day or evening doing something that you both love to do. If all else fails order a takeaway, open a bottle of wine, light some candles and stick on your loved one’s favourite DVD and spend the evening snuggled up on the sofa. Vanilla Moon have some pre Valentine and Valentine offers on so both you and your loved one can be pampered with 5* treatments without 5* price tags. Visit our Facebook page or sign up to our website to find out more. www.vanillamoon.biz Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind Eating Disorders Awareness Week The 22nd-28th February is Eating Disorders Awareness Week organised by the charity Beat, the UK’s leading charity supporting anyone affected by eating disorders or difficulties with food, weight and shape. Eating disorders are mental health conditions where people develop unhealthy eating habits and an abnormal attitude towards food that can lead to a wide range of negative physiological, social, physical and psychological consequences. There are a number of variants, but the most common of them include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. A common thread among the various disorders is that they all feature alarming disturbances in eating behaviour and extreme efforts to manage weight or food intake.

Liane Ulbricht-Kazan DHP HPD MNCH (Reg)

In the UK, about 1.6 million people of all ages, genders and backgrounds suffer from a form of eating disorder. Sam Little DSFH These issues usually develop during teen years or young adulthood (but in some cases may also appear during childhood or later in life). They can become serious mental and psychological health concerns, which can in extreme cases become life-threatening, if a person does not receive proper and effective help. However it’s generally fair to say that these problems have their roots outside of the relationship with food. Their triggers can be far reaching. In this sense, helping people is usually all about managing the thought proccesses that lead to the anxiety, stress, self-esteem and confidence etc. issues, which fuel the problem in the first place. The Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) can be highly effective in helping clients to overcome conditions brought about by inappropriate responses to stress. It helps people to regain a sense of intellectual control in their lives, which does not create the anxiety or trigger the issue in the first place. By focusing on the solutions rather than dwelling on the problems, SFH works by helping people to build up the healthier patterns of thought and behaviour required, in order to build positive actions into habits, which are positive, healthy and self sustaining.
