Welcome

August edition of your local magazine. If to the Dugust you have noticed a different look about the DC&U this month that’s because I am pleased to have taken over the DC&U from Moira Buist who has been publishing it since 2012 and who also publishes the Wotton Directory. The DC&U will now be under the ’umbrella’ of The Five Valleys Directory which has been established for nearly ten years in the Stroud area and there are great advantages to advertising in both! If you would like to advertise in either or both Directories then please email me at catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk or telephone 01666 504700. You can also visit our website www.fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk I hope you enjoy reading this edition and continue to use our wonderful local businesses. Best wishes

A Peek into the Past August 1875 - First Channel swim On August 24th 1875 Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel without the use of artificial aids. Webb was one of twelve children, born in Shropshire to a local doctor. During his time in the merchant navy he attempted to rescue a man who had fallen overboard. Webb dived into the sea in the midAtlantic Ocean. Unfortunately the man was never found but Webb’s daring won him a medal, £100 and the adulation of the British press. In 1873 Webb read a record of the failed attempt to swim the Channel by J. B. Johnson. Inspired Webb left his job and

began training: first at Lambeth baths, then in the Thames and finally in the Channel itself. On 12th August 1875 he made his first attempt, but strong winds meant conditions were against him and he abandoned the swim. On 24th August he started out again from Admiralty Pier at Dover, backed by three chase boats and smeared in porpoise oil. During the crossing he suffered jellyfish stings and also strong currents which delayed him by five hours. Finally, after 21 hours and 45 minutes he landed near Calais

Trust Your Tradesman! Most tradesmen are highly skilled professionals out to earn an honest living. Here’s how to keep ahead of the game and avoid rogue traders and ‘cowboys’. wall.

A roof is your home’s first line of defence against the weather, yet when was the last time you spared it a thought? No, I can’t remember either. In fact, we ought to inspect our roof twice a year - before and after the winter. This way we can stop damage before it becomes extensive and therefore expensive. Here is a checklist of points to watch for:

Built up felt roofing and mastic asphalt: tends to be used on flat roofs to provide a waterproof barrier. Roof sheeting and cladding: tends to be used on factory units and involves covering with light, synthetic sheets. Leadsheeting: traditional covering used on old schools and churches. Thatching: a highly specialised skill. Roofing can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, so it is best left to the experts. When employing a roofer check:

Look for holes, tears or buckling in the flashing (this is the metal used to seal bends and joints around skylights and chimneys etc.). Over 90% of roof leaks occur in these areas. Look for obviously loose, cracked or missing tiles. Check the tiles around the edge of the roof, as these are particularly susceptible to damage from wind, rain and ice. Inspect gutters and down pipes and make sure they are attached securely to the house. Clear out all loose leaves and debris from gutters and drains. Check for dark areas on the roof. It could be a damp patch or an area of algae growth caused by water getting in. If you decide you need a roofing contractor, what services can they offer? Most roofers specialise in one or more of the following: Roof slating and tiling: using traditional or modern tiles to cover a pitched roof or

That they have adequate liability cover. That they have appropriate qualifications (City and Guilds, NVQ or SVQ) That they can provide evidence of NFRC registration (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) or CORC registration (Confederation of Roofing Contractors). If in doubt check with the body concerned. That the roofer has a standard health and safety policy in place and they offer an independent guarantee.

Longfield Charity Shop Dursley

Jayne Mills became a volunteer at Longfield charity shop in Dursley for a very special reason. She wanted to say thank you to the charity’s Hospice at Home nurses who helped care for her husband Dave. “The nurses came out through the night and they were brilliant,” said Jayne, from Cam. “I wanted to give something back.” She joined the shop in 2012 and now divides her time as a shop volunteer and part-time deputy manager. Every year Longfield’s 14 shops raise almost half of the money needed for the charity to provide its free services. Cotswold Care Hospice has changed its name to Longfield as part of its focus on expanding its community care. Longfield was the name of the charity’s original premises when it first launched in Minchinhampton in 1989. Kaylee Jordison, shop manager, is appealing for volunteers to help in Dursley’s two Longfield shops. “Just a few hours a week can make such a difference to what we do and the services we provide,” she said. Volunteers need to be able to offer a minimum of four hours a week, have good customer service skills, be open to training for using a till and be able to Jayne Mills and Kaylee Jordison at use their initiative. Longfield's charity shop in Dursley

To find out more about how to volunteer at the Dursley shop, drop into the shop and ask for a volunteer application pack. Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

Beauty Tips and Tricks for Summer

by Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon We have recently had free Wifi installed so come along with your portable devices! You don’t need to be a library Summer is fast approaching and it is time to step up the beaumember to use this. ty game. With summer comes long nights, bright sunshine and to the Summer Reading We are also looking forward more and more time spent outdoors; but, which it alsobegins bringson with it Challenge Saturday July 11th until Saturday a whole host of beauty dilemmas and problems that are not September 5th. This is aimed at children of Primary School there in winter - melting makeup, frizzy hair and dry skin to age and there will be craft activities on offer throughout the name a few. Luckily, there are some beauty tips and tricks for summer to keep the beauty summer, so come along and sign up. woes at bay and to keep you looking your best. Please call in to the library for more information. Get Summer Ready Get yourself summer ready with these simple beauty tips and tricks. The summer months are the perfect time to experiment with your beauty regime and to take on-board some little tweaks to get the most out of your look. Coconut Oil Your Hair Though coconut oil is great for a number of different uses, one of the most popular is for keeping hair soft and protected from summer dryness. Simply coat your hair in coconut oil a little goes a long way - and leave; it can be left for anywhere between half an hour and overnight, the longer the better! Once happy your hair has been moisturised and nourished, wash it out. Applying the shampoo before any water It really is that simple. Deeply Moisturise Your Face In summer your skin is put to the test; air conditioning, sun and sweat all work to keep your skin from looking its best. By moisturising your skin regularly with a deeply moisturising cream or gel you can combat all of these and your face will have a great summer glow. Keep Heels Looking Great It’ll soon be time to start wearing sandals, flip flops and open shoes, but this brings the worry of cracked heels and dry feet. A top way to combat this is to moisturise your feet over night with body moisturiser or Vaseline. Coat your feet - focusing on the heels - in your chosen product and put on a pair of socks. Leave overnight and allow for the moisturiser to soak in and remove all traces of dry skin or cracked heels. Avoid Powdery Makeup One of the biggest problems with beauty and the heat is keeping your makeup looking its best after a long day at the office or an evening out with friends. The heat can cause makeup to ‘melt’ off your face and hinders staying power. However, one way of combating this is by swapping powdery blushes and bronzers for cream based products. They stay put for a lot longer and tend to last longer without lifting. Although there are a number of beauty tips and tricks for summer, these four cover all bases - hair, face, makeup and feet. Summer does not need to mean that your beauty regime or practices are affected, but with a few extra additions summer can be a breeze.

WiFi is currently available in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Cirencester libraries and in the eight community libraries. Between May and the end of September this year, WiFi will be extended to cover all libraries in the county. Library users will be able to bring their phone, laptop or tablet when they visit their local branch and use the WiFi to access emails, the internet and to help them with their research or studies or carry out job searches. It will also help people access county council and library services digitally, including online forms and requests for services, whilst further supporting people to use eBooks and eAudiobooks. The new WiFi will be supported by a suite of upgraded PCs which are due to be installed across the county's libraries from April. The new PCs will have improved software to make searching the web and carrying out tasks even easier, as well as increasing security for users. Further information will be made available in individual libraries as new PCs and free WiFi head their way. Whilst the PCs are being replaced, they will not be bookable in advance or be available for drop in use though we will endeavour to release PCs for drop in use as soon as they have been replaced. Peoples Network PCs will still be available at nearby libraries. You can see the commonly asked questions and keep uptodate on the Library WiFi page or through local library staff. We will give customers as much notice as possible as to when the upgrade will take place in each library and in all cases we aim to keep disruption to a minimum. The roll out of WiFi will start in the main libraries at Stroud, Tewkesbury, Dursley, Newent, Stow and Coleford in May Contact Dursley Library For further details. Tel: 01453 543059.

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Cam – my dad was a printer on the Gazette then we moved to Cheltenham where he worked on the Echo, followed by Chalford Hill when he left printing. There I had the most idyllic childhood possible with pretty much complete freedom to roam. I loved and flourished at the village school. My parents gave us the most stable and secure upbringing for which I am eternally grateful and I am convinced that it stood us in good stead for life. They made a good team -my mum quieter and an absolute rock and my dad so much fun – leading us in all sorts of adventures and escapades. We moved to Stroud when I was 11 and I went to the High School to which I was not suited… too rigid and focussed on academia. I excelled in English but failed miserably at maths (since it has been discovered that I suffer from dyscalculia (the equivalent of dyslexia but with numbers). I was happy to say goodbye (as was the headmistress) after “O” levels, and did well in my “A” levels at Cheltenham Technical College. What did you do when you left school? I took a course at Oxford Polytechnic in book publishing, which led to my first job in publishing in London. I loved living there and stayed for 12 years (my mother is a Cockney so perhaps it is in my genes?). I had several jobs initially in publishing but later as Press Officer for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Publicity Manager for The Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. Then like so many Stroudies I returned with my daughter then aged two. Stroud is a great place for children, she flourished at Stroud Valley school and then at Stroud High – unlike me she excelled academically - and went to Cardiff University, since then she has worked in publishing. What led you to the business you have now? I had several jobs all in PR, media relations and events organising, including for the Federation of Small Businesses, which led me to go freelance doing PR for small businesses which I have done for the past 10 years. I am passionate about the UK’s small business sector and so admiring of the people who have such brilliant businesses. To advertise telephone Catherine Dixon on 01666 504700

23 Stroud is rich in them and they contribute so much to making our town what it is. More recently I have added property management for an absent landlord to my portfolio, this includes gardening which I love and keeps me fit. Also, I have just got a new role with an organisation called Barking Mad which is an alternative for people who don’t want to put their dog into kennels while they are away. Instead they go to a Host. I have been hosting for a few months now and it gives me all the best bits of having a dog without the long-term commitment. The dogs bring everything they need for their stay including food, their bed, toys even poo bags! So it doesn’t cost the Host a penny. There is also 24/7 support should they need it. I have enjoyed dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. They are so well-adjusted and loved by their owners, settle quickly and obviously enjoy their holiday with me. I am now looking for more hosts in the five valleys area. Any interests or hobbies? I am blessed with a wide circle of wonderful friends with whom I love to spend time. I have just got back from a fortnight’s holiday in Greece with one of them. I love my garden, cinema, walking (even better now I frequently have a dog!). I belong to a local Book Club, like to cook and also eating at the ever-increasing really good places in Stroud and its surrounds. What of your home life? I live with my relatively new partner John – we bumped into each other a few years ago but actually went to Chalford Hill primary school together. Since my dear dad died three years ago my small mummy (who is 93) lives here too. John designed a wonderful annexe for her and now he is re-vamping my garden – which I have asked to be a courtyard sort of Italian in design. Plans for the future? I would like to trundle on as I am for as long as possible! The stage I am at now is great. I plan to take the gap year that I didn’t get when I was young (no-one did in those days) which will include visiting my much-loved nephews. One lives in Singapore and the other in New Zealand where I will also get to meet his baby daughter Sophia - my first great-niece. Stroud is a great place to be and keeps on getting better. The restoration of the canal is the best thing ever. I live alongside it, so see it progressing on a daily basis and it is great for dog-walking. Garden View This month - Planting Daffodils Last Spring my neighbour admired my display of daffodils.

Best Daffodil Varieties

“Barely any of mine have flowered this year,” she said, “What’s your secret? Your’s look better every year!”

Trumpet Daffodils have big trumpets, at least as long as the petals.

I was stumped. How hard is it to plant a daffodil? Dig a hole somewhere round September time and pop the bulb in pointy end upwards - job done!

Arctic Gold is a deeply saturated yellow Beersheba is a stunning white variety

Except, when I broke down what’s involved, it’s not actually that simple. To produce a mass of bulbs which flower for a prolonged period year on year requires thought and preparation.

Large Cupped have trumpets over a third the length of the petals

First, choose the right bulbs. Pick the largest, firmest bulbs you can find. Then plant them in a deep hole at least 8 inches / 20cm and preferably 10 inches / 25 cm deep, in small groups. Most people plant their daffs too near the surface. This means they’re likely to dry out. Dry bulbs lack the food and moisture required to build up reserves for the following year. This results in lots of grassy leaves and not many flowers.

Border Beauty has a striking orange trumpet and dark centre. Pink Charm is an unusual white variety with a salmon tinged trumpet. Dwarf varieties Nanus Midget is tiny but perfectly formed. February Gold is stunning and for a splash of colour, Jet Fire with it’s orange trumpets takes some beating. Once the daffodils have flowered leave the foliage untouched for six weeks before shearing it off. This gives enough time for the bulbs to reabsorb nutrients from the leaves. Unfortunately daffodil foliage is untidy stuff and in a small suburban garden it can be very unsightly. There are two ways around this… The first is to treat daffodils as annuals and plant them in potting compost in aquatic baskets among the other plants. Once the flowers have gone the basket may be dug up and the bulbs discarded on the compost heap. The second way is to plant dwarf varieties. That way you can enjoy the flowers without worrying about the foliage. Time to get planting!

28 Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue Old Bakery Cottage The Street Frampton on Severn Gloucestershire GL2 7EA 01452 740684 or 07840 723 235

Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue is based in Frampton on Severn and covers the surrounding areas of the Severn Vale. I have been rescuing and rehabilitating hedgehogs for about five years and completed the Vale Wildlife Hedgehog Rehabilitation course in 2011. I also have a local vet who is available 24 hours when needed. I am fully equipped to take emergencies and have the capacity for in the region of 50 hedgehogs. Please remember: hedgehogs are generally shy nocturnal animals and if you see one out in the day something may be wrong. Hedgehogs are waking up from hibernation all over the UK at the moment. Their urgent need is fresh drinking water in a sturdy ground level dish (to avoid tipping) and dry hedgehog food. Dry food can be left down for longer than wet food. Hopefully they will start to breed in the coming weeks and after around 32 days gestation hoglets will be born. It is important to move bonfires before lighting, check well before strimming and carefully move compost piles as there may be nest of hoglets or hedgehogs sleeping in these areas. If you have an ornamental pond, please ensure there is some way for hedgehogs to climb out. Pea netting and goal nets are a common hazard. If netting is at least 8 off the ground hedgehogs can pass under safely. Goal nets need to be removed when not in use as they are a danger to general to wildlife and sometimes domestic pets. Apart from the obvious visible injuries, dog bites, open wounds, fractures and burns there are other problems that could need attention. A hedgehog out in the day wobbling, unsteady on its feet, with flies around it or sunbathing (hedgehogs do not sunbathe) will need urgent medical attention. If you find a seemingly uninjured hedgehog out in daylight during Spring, Summer and Autumn it could be a nursing mother foraging. It is very important if you find a hedgehog and feel you need to take it to a rescue that you write down the details of exactly where it was found. If it is a female and is too unwell to be released immediately then the rescue will be alerted to the possibility of hoglets and hopefully they can be rescued or reunited quickly. These are hard times for the hedgehog - has declined massively from an estimated 36 million to approximately 1 million in the last 50 years. There are many rescues working hard for the survival of this native species and you can help them too by providing water, food (not milk and bread!)and being vigilant if they are in difficulties. www.wildhogshedgehogrescue.org.uk or follow us on Facebook

I hope to continue with this work here. I am a hand tools rather than a power tools person, and have been gardening for about 15 years, using organic methods. Having had to re-home my beloved collie before coming here, I would also be pleased to do some dog walking. References available if required
