A Brief History of... Cider

Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as apple wine.

It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD. Cider was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread. It was drunk instead of water because water was often not safe to drink.

The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally it was made by crushing apples in a trough, until John Worlidge produced a special apple-mill in 1676. The best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry, fruity and with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex taste. Both are perfect for consumption, chilled, on a warm summer evening.

Get Lost...in a good book Children’s Book Week - 31st October-6th November Children’s literature has never been so cool. A decade ago if you’d admitted at a dinner party that you read children’s books for fun you’d probably have received a wary look and people would have subtly shifted away. Then JK Rowling arrived on the scene with her engaging characters and page-turning plots and we all had our nose in a Harry Potter.

strong narrative voice. After all the real world is a great story too. Reading is not only an entertainment medium, it is also a life skill, and it’s one of the best gifts you can give to a child. With this in mind let’s support Children’s Book Week and tell out kids to get lost...in a book.

Gadget-addicted kids shunned their computers and play stations in favour of finding out what the bespectacled teen wizard was up to. Better still they then went on to devour books by other authors and this is excellent news for a number of reasons. Research proves that avid readers:

Children’s Book Week focuses on the sheer enjoyment of reading and aims to encourage as many children as possible to pick up a book. This year’s theme is books from around the world. That doesn’t just mean fiction. In recent years there has been an explosion in high quality non-fiction for children. Boys particularly are attracted to this genre. A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind How to control Anger

Recognising angry and the feelings, which preceed anger hugely important. Because anger is generated within the brain, any effective anger control methods must also be brain based. Anger is felt in both the body and mind. It can adversely affect behavior beyond the ‘outburst’, as well as how we respond to the world and it to us! Anger is primary response to a perceived or actual threat(s). Rationally speaking, anger is normally not an appropriate response to the actual events, and always represents a loss of control, which is hard to regain once unleashed. Traditional advice includes counting to ten, or kicking a ball around etc. However, it can be extremely exhausting to ‘fight’ angry feelings especially when they‘ve already taken hold. It’s arguable who suffers most, the receiver or the instigator, but it’s clear that both parties have a lot to lose. Because anger is always stress related, the most effective way to control anger is to stay away from that tipping point by effectively reducing our stress. Anger is a response to stress. It originates from the primitive part of the brain. We each have a metaphorical “stress bucket” that gets filled the more we think negatively. When our stress bucket is full, the mind calls on the stress response and the primitive mind reacts with the fight or flight response. As a result we may begin operating from the primitive instead of the intellectual brain. Anger is an “emotional hijacking” that takes over and stops us from thinking calmly and clearly, so we need to regain our intellectual control to respond appropriately and optimistically to any given situation. To do this we need to operate form the intellectual part of the brain. Local brain based specialists and hypnotherapy providers Sam and Liane at Changes Welcome Hypnotherapy understand the causes of anger very scientificallyand can certianly heklp you to put your issues in context. They also have the tools to help you regain the level of inrellectual control that not only helps with anger, but which is also proven to be highly effective with all kinds of stress related issues. “We’ve been offering full time clinical hypnotherapy within the Stroud & South Gloucestershire area for nearly 5 years. We’ve helped all kinds of lovely local people with these and similar issues, and would love to hear from you today.” Sam Little DSFH CNHC

by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World in Whitminster

A little time spent in the garden in October will pay dividends come spring time. Here are some tips for jobs to do during those last few mild days of the year, while plants are dormant and the soil is still warm. Stand back and think about which branches help give the plant its shape. Use those branches to give the plant the shape you want. Remove overgrown and smaller branches, as well as any which are dead or diseased. Always cut with sharp secateurs, just above a “node” (the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another). Plant drifts of daffodil, tulip and bluebell bulbs to guarantee a spring show of colour. October is also a perfect time to relocate any plants, as well as to introduce fruit trees. From pears to plums and apples to apricots – there is a fruiting plant to suit whatever pot or plot you have. Why not try something new! Give your garden sheds, fences and furniture some care and attention before the colder months arrive. Check for signs of damage, rot and rust, treating each as you go with specialist products. Painting wood with preservative will help extend its life. Why not choose a new colour such as blue or green, and give your garden a weekend make-over? Cut back dead plant stalks and sweep up fallen leaves to avoid allowing diseases to over-winter. Alternatively, pile them into one designated area to make your own little wildlife haven. Also, raise your pots up off the ground on bricks or ‘pot feet’ to avoid water-logging and frost damage.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup If you’ve ever wondered what else you can do with a pumpkin other than make a Halloween Lantern, try our rich, golden, tasty soup.

Note: You’ll need a pumpkin which weighs about 1.5Kg for this recipe.

garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces.

Ingredients

Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it.

3-5 medium cloves garlic, unpeeled 1kg (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded Olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cumin Salt and pepper, to taste 1 litre (1 3/4 pints) vegetable or chicken stock Cream, for serving (optional) Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for serving (optional)

Method Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled

Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly. Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour. Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender. Serve the soup hot with cream and/or grated nutmeg/ chilli flakes if preferred.

A Peek into the Past October 1066 - The Battle of Hastings On October 14th, 1066, King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, was defeated by the Norman forces of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. According to legend, at the end of a bloody, allday battle, Harold was shot in the eye with an arrow and killed and his forces were destroyed. Just over two weeks earlier, William, the duke of Normandy, had invaded England, claiming his right to the English throne. According to Norman historians, Edward the Confessor, the childless English king, had promised to make his cousin William his heir. On his deathbed, however, Edward changed his mind and granted the kingdom to Harold Godwine, head of the leading noble family in England.

In January 1066, King Edward died, and Harold Godwine was proclaimed King Harold II. William immediately countered his claim. On September 28, 1066, William landed in England with approximately 7000 troops and cavalry. He seized the town of Pevensey then marched to Hastings, where he paused to organize his forces. On October 13, Harold arrived near Hastings with his army, and the next day William led his forces out to give battle. After his victory, William marched on London and received the city's submission. On Christmas Day, 1066, he was crowned the first Norman king of England and the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history came to an end.
