Trust Your Tradesman! Most tradesmen are highly skilled professionals out to earn an honest living. Here’s how to keep ahead of the game and avoid rogue traders and ‘cowboys’.

Part three of this series looks at Plasterers If you’re planning a DIY plastering project there are a few things you should think about before starting—and the first is having your head examined! Plastering is not a job for the uninitiated. Fact: most professionals have trained for years to become masters of their craft . Plastering is partart, requiring tremendous eye-hand coordination, and part-chemistry. When you add water to dry plaster mix, you begin an irreversible chemical and crystallization process. The water and air content of the mix is critical, and timing is everything, as the plaster has to be ‘finished’ at just the right time. The problem for Mr. DIY is that if it all goes wrong - and believe me, if you’ve never done it before, it will go wrong - no amount of paint or wallpaper is going to make that surface look good. What plasterers do They work both externally and internally. They mix and apply finishes to external walls using sand and cement, pebble-dash and stone-effect materials. Internally they mix and apply various types of plaster to walls, floors and ceilings. Solid plastering is the application of a wet finish to an internal surface or a protective covering, such as pebble-dash, onto an external surface. The plasterer will use a range of hand tools and sometimes spraying equipment in the

case of pebble-dash. Fibrous plastering involves making ornamental plasterwork such as ceiling roses, cornices, ornamental columns and architraves using moulds and a plaster and short fibre mix. Dry lining is the construction of internal partitions using plasterboard or wallboards fixed to a timber or metal frame. It really is best to use someone who has been recommended to you and whose work you’ve seen. Failing that, contact one of the trade associations below. They will be able to put you in touch with someone local. All the organisations promote best practice and all will mediate in the event that you are dissatisfied with the services of any of their members. Plastering is one of those jobs which looks blissfully easy but which, if done incorrectly, can cause endless heartache. You really are best to call in a professional. Lifestyle Bathrooms Lifestyle Bathrooms is a new venture for Rex Cart, who has over 30 years of experience in the bathroom industry. His business is based in Chalford, where he has lived for the past 8 years. Rex has strong links with Bath, where he has a warehouse, and supplies customers throughout the city. He is expanding his service to the Five Valleys area, as he has found there is a demand for his services here too. Over the years Rex noticed a huge increase in demand for people who were looking for solutions to mobility issues. The population now has a larger proportion of older people, and there is frequently a need to adapt the bathroom to suit changing circumstances. Rex at Lifestyle Bathrooms offers a personalised service, and will visit your home to advise you on the options you have. He will look at your existing bathroom, and work out a plan with you using suitable products for your needs. There are numerous products available on the market, but Rex has the skill to select quality sanitary ware and furniture that will make the best use of your available space. Changing your bath to a shower is the simplest and most common solution to mobility problems when bathing. It is possible to replace the bath with the same size shower, or you may want to take the opportunity of changing the whole layout of your bathroom. Anything is possible, and to suit all budgets. If you are keen to retain a bath in your house, there is always the option of a walk in bath. There are simple to operate taps, shower controls and wc flushing systems, all of which help to make life easier. Along with grab rails, non-slip surfaces and good lighting, these adaptations could revolutionise your lifestyle. Lifestyle Bathrooms will supply your goods without VAT if you are disabled or have a chronic condition that would benefit from bathroom adaptation. They will advise on a case by case basis, but many people will find they do qualify for this substantial cost saving (HMRC rules apply). Rex will be delighted to pay you a visit without obligation, so please give him a call on 07496 057281 or email on rex@lifestylebathrooms.net Email: catherine@fivevalleysdirectory.co.uk

… But Is It Acupuncture? With so many rival forms of ‘alternative therapy’ available, it is important to beware of imitations, says Pam Everitt.

W

hen we are ill or in pain and seeking expert medical help, we rightly expect doctors and others who treat us to be properly trained and qualified. But what about healers who work outside the framework of conventional medicine, such as acupuncturists, homeopaths or reflexologists? How can we be sure they have right training and qualifications and meet the kind of standards we would expect from health professionals? This is a subject close to my heart. Since 2001 I have studied and practised as a traditional acupuncturist. As a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I run clinics in Stroud, Cheltenham and Newent, treating patients for a range of conditions and ailments. Before qualifying, I took a three-year degree course at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Leamington, followed by two years’ postgraduate study. I still take part in training and professional development every year – it’s something I have to do in order to receive the all-important BAcC stamp of approval. As someone schooled in classical ‘Five Element’ acupuncture, I’m particularly concerned about the spread of treatments commonly known as ‘Western Medical Acupuncture’ and ‘Myofascial Trigger Point Acupuncture (also known as ‘dry needling acupuncture’). These are widely practised by

doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and midwives within the NHS. They are described as a form of acupuncture, but while the practitioners are medically trained, most have little knowledge of, or training in, the principles which underlie traditional Chinese acupuncture. Dry needling v. acupuncture I was originally drawn to acupuncture because it treats the whole person. In the right hands, it is painless and effective – a highly sophisticated form of medicine that is recognised and practised throughout the world. In traditional Chinese medicine, the symptoms we feel when we are ill, such as a sore throat or a swollen gland, are a sign that the body is out of balance. Acupuncturists aim to correct the imbalance and encourage the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This is done by inserting ultra-fine needles at special points located along channels called ‘meridians’ which carry vital energy, called ‘Qi’, throughout the body. ‘Dry needling’ is a recent development that is used alongside disciplines such as physiotherapy, and within the framework of a Western-style medical diagnosis. Usually billed as a treatment for headaches or muscle pain, it involves inserting a needle into a ‘trigger point’, a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which causes pain when pressed or squeezed. This creates an entirely different

A Peek into the Past September 1930 - A Sticky Invention On September 8th 1930 Richard G. Drew invented Scotch Tape. Drew worked for 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. Originally, 3M only made sandpaper, but during testing at a local car workshop, Drew observed that car painters had difficulty making clean dividing lines on two-colour paint jobs. After two years of effort in the company labs, he invented masking tape (1925), a tan paper tape with a light, pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Five years later, he’d developed his invention further and Scotch Brand Cellulose Tape was born.

This was the first waterproof, see-through, pressure-sensitive tape. People loved the fact that it could help them makedo-and mend during the Great Depression and enthusiastically embraced the product. The introduction of the distinctive handheld dispenser, ‘the snail’, in 1939 propelled it to iconic status. Even the popular US show Saturday Night Live got in on the act, parodying it in their 1978 sketch “Scotch® Boutique,” about the owners of a trendy new store selling nothing but Scotch® Tape. Today there are more than 400 different varieties of tape sold under the Scotch and 3M brand.

Why am I Depressed? When the caveman looked out of the cave and there was snow, or ice or danger, and he couldn’t go out and hunt, he pulled the fur up over his head and he didn’t interact until the situation changed. Instead, he conserved his energy to be strong enough to fight again another day. We’ve adapted this response to modern day symptoms of depression, but some people have lost the ability to re-adapt as the situation improves - Has it improved? The type of explanation we give ourselves about our world is hugely important. It is not the events of our lives, which fundamentally give rise to depression. It is the thought processes and actions, which surround life’s events that determine, whether we become depressed. Distortions in our thinking determine whether or not we get locked into depression. If we take things personally, interpret events as all pervasive and think that set-backs last forever, our mood will inevitably become gloomy. So, adaptability in our thinking is clearly important. The criteria for diagnosis of a major depression episode used by doctors lists nine areas. The standard states that five (or more) of the following symptoms must have been present during the same two week period and represent a change from previous functioning: depressed mood, markedly diminished interest, significant weight loss (or gain), insomnia/ hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation/ retardation, fatigue/ loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, diminished ability to concentrate including indecisiveness, recurrent thoughts of death. You don’t need to wait until you have enough symptoms for a diagnosis before you can get help. The feeling of low or depressed mood has everything to do with our brain chemistry and connectivity. People who suffer from depression show a significant decrease in three so-called monoamine neurotransmitters: norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. These are the brain chemicals responsible for our positive emotions and feelings of wellbeing. Solution Focused Hypnotherapists have a pragmatic understanding of how the brain works. Their approach allows them to work with clients on a conscious and a subconscious level to get the results they want and need in a relatively short period of time.

30 Improving your Digestion Naturally By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon Many people don’t appreciate just how complex the digestive system is and how necessary it is to our well -being. A healthy digestive system is essential for breaking down foods so that the body can get the nutrition that it needs to stay healthy. A well-functioning digestive system is also vital to cellular repair and for giving us the energy that we need, The digestive process The digestive process starts at the mouth; this is why it is essential to chew food properly. Chewing food correctly allows enough saliva to be produced allowing the breakdown of the starches that are contained within the food. Next, the food will move into the oesophagus before travelling to the stomach. Once the food is released into the stomach, the food is mixed with digestive juices and it is then passed into the intestines. Finally, the pancreas and liver play an important part in completing the digestive process; the pancreas produces pancreatic juices that help the body to breakdown starches, fats and proteins and then the liver produces bile to assist in the breakdown of fats. Problems with the digestive system Due to the complexity of the digestive system, it is not uncommon for people to develop problems such as constipation, indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome or acid reflux etc. All of these problems can be painful and distressing but there are many things that people can do in order to help improve their digestive system. The following tips can help: Drinking water can assist in relieving some digestive difficulties; it can help to prevent constipation and ease the digestion of food. Increasing fibre is another way to help achieve a healthier digestive system and it also plays an important role in the prevention of diseases like diabetes and some cancers. According to NHS guidelines, adults should be eating around 30g of fibre every day, however, many people do not do this. Chew food properly and try not to eat when you are rushed or stressed. Supplements such as probiotics and digestive enzymes can be useful for some people, however, if you are on medication or have a medical condition, then seek advice from your doctor first. Stress can have a negative impact on our digestive system - find ways to reduce stress naturally such as adopting an exercise program or learning meditation. In addition, massage is an effective way of reducing stress; it can also help to soothe aches and pains and ease tight muscles. If you are experiencing ongoing digestive problems, a treatment course of advanced digestion reflexology can be extremely beneficial.
