From Job Seeker to HR Professional

How was your experience being recruited through Jobcentre Plus?

“My experience with the Jobcentre Plus was highly supportive. The team were welcoming and took the time to understand my personal circumstances. They also assisted in refining my CV and directed me to the relevant job listings.”

Tell us about what role you applied for and where you are now

“I initially applied for a Barista role but was offered a position as an office assistant supporting the HR Manager with administrative duties. In the past 2.5 years, I’ve gained valuable skills through training and now handle many HR processes independently, including delivering training to new and existing employees. Compass also supports my professional development through training sessions and practical payroll experience.”

What advice would you give to other job seekers?

“Take full advantage of the Jobcentre’s resources and support. Don’t hesitate to ask for help with your CV, interview preparation, job search strategies, or training programs. The staff are there to support you every step of the way.”

On the Day

- Give yourself plenty of time to arrive

- Turn off your phone so you’re not distracted

- Check your computer and internet connection is working if your interview is online

- Be ready to start the interview 5 to 10 minutes before

- Know how to contact the interviewer in case you’re running late or having technical issues

- Ask the interviewer to repeat the question or explain further if you do not understand (there’s nothing wrong with asking twice!)

- Write down the question or refer to your notes if you need to

- Think about your prepared examples and choose the best example to give

After Interview

If you’re offerred the role (well done!) you might want to:

- Ask for confirmation of the offer in writing

- Confirm a start date and let them know if you have a notice period

- Ask about work patterns or arrangements

- Let them know your salary expectations if you’ve not already discussed it

If you weren’t successful this time (remember, it’s common to attend a few interviews before being offered a role):

- Reflect on some of the harder questions you were asked

- Ask the interviewer for feedback on how it went and where you could have done better
