WAO CHAVÓN, WAO GALLERY AND THE ACTIVATION OF THE REGIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

CHAVÓN IS CULTURE. It has been that way since its creation, so each administration that arrives there must ensure that its raison d’être is maintained over time. Xiomara Menéndez Dajer, president of the Patronato Benéfico Oriental, understands the task well. Xiomarita, as she is affectionately called by her friends and family, has taken on the task of managing two important cultural areas in Altos de Chavón, the Regional Archaeological Museum and the art gallery, now called WAO Gallery, together with a great team. But in addition, she created an extra one — the WAO Chavón, a workspace for the community.

Chavón es cultura. Así ha sido desde su creación, por lo que cada administración que llega allí debe velar porque se mantenga su razón de ser a través del tiempo. Xiomara Menéndez Dajer, presidenta del Patronato Benéfico Oriental (PBO), ha comprendido muy bien la tarea. Xiomarita, como cariñosamente la llaman sus amigos y familiares, ha asumido junto a un gran equipo la tarea de gestionar dos áreas culturales importantes en Altos de Chavón, se trata del Museo Arqueológico Regional y la galería de arte, que ahora se llama WAO Gallery. Pero, además, le añade una extra: el WAO Chavón, un espacio de trabajo para la comunidad.

“The idea of collaborating in all these respects arose as a result of the pandemic and the months of quarantine, which served as an incubator to be able to delve deeper into the needs of our community within Casa de Campo, but at the same time, to think about how to create that bridge that connects us to other communities and to the work that we have been doing through all our PBO initiatives,” explains Menéndez Dajer. “That’s when we decided to incorporate the WAO brand into our proposal in Altos de Chavón.”

WAO stands for “We are one.” And, according to the creator, it means assuming that we are all one with our environment. It is about connecting with the elements and with creativity, inviting awareness through all our senses.

And it all makes sense; since last year, there has been a resurgence of the arts in Altos de Chavón, thanks to the various activities and events that have taken place. The WAO initiative also adds to the various pro-fund activities of the PBO.

“At the WAO Gallery, we invite visiting artists to get involved with the social programs we sponsor, not only by committing a significant percentage of the works sold but also by volunteering their time to give talks or classes to the communities we serve and to our community,” Menéndez Dajer points out.

Meanwhile, WAO Chavón invites collaboration in a workspace for the community. Like other workspaces, its spaces can be rented as offices or meeting rooms, and its shared spaces can

“La idea de colaborar en todos estos aspectos surge a raíz de la pandemia y los meses de cuarentena, que sirvieron de incubadora para poder profundizar sobre las necesidades de nuestra comunidad dentro de Casa de Campo, pero a la vez para pensar en cómo crear ese puente que nos conecte a otras comunidades y al trabajo que venimos realizando a través de todas nuestras iniciativas PBO”. “Ahí es cuando decidimos incorporar la marca WAO a nuestra propuesta en Altos de Chavón”, explica Menéndez Dajer.

WAO significa We Are One. Y de acuerdo con la creadora, es asumir que todos somos uno con nuestro entorno. Se trata de conectar con los elementos y con la creatividad, invitando por medio de todos nuestros sentidos a la sensibilización.

Y todo tiene sentido, desde el año pasado se ha notado un resurgimiento de las artes en Altos de Chavón, gracias a las diversas actividades y eventos que se están celebrando desde entonces. La iniciativa WAO también se suma a las distintas actividades pro-fondo del PBO.

“En WAO Gallery, invitamos a los artistas que nos visitan a que se involucren con los programas sociales que auspiciamos, no solamente dejando un por ciento importante de las obras vendidas, sino también ofreciendo su tiempo para impartir charlas o clases a las comunidades que servimos y a nuestra comunidad”, indica Menéndez Dajer.

Mientras que, a través de WAO Chavón, se invita a la colaboración en un espacio de trabajo para la comunidad. Al igual be used by the community with the different packages they offer. WAO Chavón also brings together people or initiatives that are environmentally friendly, promoting sustainable resources. This center is intended to generate income that can then be reinvested in the PBO’s social programs, such as the Villa de Transformación, in Villa Hermosa. This is a center that will serve as a base so that young people from that community who are in a state of great vulnerability can study, engage in new undertakings and create in a safe space.

Love Of Art

“Personally, I love art, I think art is a very important way to express ourselves as a language that often goes beyond the word,” says Menéndez Dajer. “I think the artist is also the one who perceives the work and allows himself to hear, touch or feel the message. Then the work becomes shared in a collaboration of the one who makes it and the one who perceives it — the audience. In my case, I can appreciate any artistic expression through any medium. I love to immerse myself in a work and just feel that shared world where I can be ONE with it, with the artist, with the message and the creation.”

When Menéndez Dajer took over the cultural management of Altos de Chavón, she thought big.

Con este centro se pretende generar ingresos que luego pueden ser reinvertidos en los programas sociales del PBO, como la “Villa de Transformación”, en Villa Hermosa. Este es un centro que servirá de base para que jóvenes de esa comunidad en estado de gran vulnerabilidad puedan estudiar, emprender y crear en un espacio seguro.

Amor Al Arte

“En lo personal, me encanta el arte. Creo que el arte es un medio muy importante para expresarnos, un lenguaje que muchas veces llega más allá que la palabra. Creo que es artista también el que percibe la obra, y se permite escuchar, palpar o sentir el mensaje; entonces la obra se convierte en una compartida, en una colaboración de quien la hace y quien la percibe: la audiencia. En mi caso, puedo apreciar cualquier expresión artística a través de cualquier medio. Me encanta sumergirme en una obra y solo sentir ese mundo compartido en donde puedo ser UNA con ella, con el artista, con el mensaje, con la creación”. Xiomara Menéndez Dájer, presidenta del PBO.

She included on her team an important Dominican museologist and art curator, Margarita González Auffant.

González Auffant, when called to direct the Altos de Chavón Regional Archaeological Museum, did not hesitate for a second to move to La Romana and take it on. This museum is a reference for Dominican museologists because it has an excellent collection of pieces that narrate the lives of the first inhabitants of the island. This center has maintained its prestige with research as well as recreational and educational activities for different audiences.

However, the museologist comments that, at some point, this museum lost its impact on the Dominican cultural world, especially before the pandemic. “So, I took on the direction of the museum as a challenge, with the aim of placing it again as a museum of projection, education and impact in the Dominican cultural world and, why not, at the international level,” she says.

And she has succeeded. The museum is breaking records for guided visits, with 1,968 schoolchildren from all over the country and 2,637 tourists in March 2023 alone. All this, in addition to the design and development of workshops, exhibitions, activities, camps, and more.

And, as the curator of contemporary art at WAO Gallery, González Auffant comments that this challenge came a little after being installed in Altos de Chavón.

González Auffant explains that contemporary art has always been present in her life, with a mother who is a philosopher and art historian, Margarita Auffant, and a great uncle, Rafael Auffant, who was the founder of the first Dominican gallery.

“In my home, they talked about art and artists all the time, and the job of contemporary art curator has come naturally, without neglecting the academic specialization,” she says.

From 2022 to March 2023, WAO Gallery held 16 exhibitions. They have presented a portfolio of a variety of quality artists, including young artists, such as Joaquín Basanta, Simón de los Santos and Vanessa Languasco, and established artists, such as Fernando Tamburini. The gallery also held collective exhibitions, such as “Chromatisms,” as well as photography exhibitions on conservationist themes with Eladio Fernández and photographs of the preservation of manatees by Fundemar.

González Auffant points out that the agenda is full for the remainder of the year 2023. They are already planning for the year 2024.

Al asumir la gestión cultural de Altos de Chavón, Xiomara Menéndez pensó en grande. Dentro de su equipo incluyó a una importante museóloga y curadora de arte dominicana, Margarita González Auffant.

González Auffant, al ser convocada para dirigir el Museo Arqueológico Regional Altos de Chavón, no dudó ni un segundo en mudarse a La Romana y asumirlo. Es que este museo es un referente para los museólogos dominicanos, debido a que tiene una excelente colección de piezas que narran la vida de los primeros habitantes de la isla. Definitivamente, este centro mantenía el prestigio con investigaciones y actividades lúdicas y educativas para distintos públicos. Sin embargo, la museóloga comenta que, en algún momento, este museo perdió su incidencia en el mundo cultural dominicano, sobre todo antes de la pandemia. “Por lo que asumí la dirección del museo como un reto, con la finalidad de colocarlo de nuevo como un museo de proyección, educación e incidencia en el mundo cultural dominicano y, por qué no, a nivel internacional”, detalla.

Y ha tenido éxito. El museo está rompiendo récord de visitas guiadas, llegando a manejar 1,968 escolares de toda la geografía nacional y 2,637 turistas sólo en el mes de marzo de 2023, al margen del diseño y desarrollo de talleres, exposiciones, actividades, campamentos etc. Y, como curadora de arte contemporáneo en WAO Gallery, González Auffant comenta que este reto vino un poco después de estar instalada en Altos de Chavón.

González Auffant freeing creators in the search for new answers. The museum’s activities and guided tours contribute to a greater knowledge of Dominican culture, which reinforces national identity and a love of Dominican cultural heritage.

The same is true of the gallery exhibitions and the knowledge of Dominican and international artists that allows them to analyze different moments and styles of current art.

More About Margarita

González Auffant’s passion is museums. She has studied them since her youth, having worked at the age of 18 at the Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Educational Services, where she began her career. She conceived more than seven Dominican museums and educational parks, including the Trampolín Children’s Museum, the Telecommunications Museum, the Ramón Cáceres House Museum, the General Gregorio Luperón House Museum and the Museum of the Virgin of Altagracia, next to the Basilica in Higüey. From an administrative point of view, she directed the Pago en Especie collection of the Museo de Hacienda y Crédito Público in Mexico and assumed the direction of the Museo Virreinal Alcázar de Colón in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo.

González Auffant explica que el arte contemporáneo está presente desde siempre en su vida, con una madre filósofa e historiadora del arte, Margarita Auffant, y un tío abuelo, Rafael Auffant, fundador de la primera galería dominicana. “En mi hogar se hablaba de arte y artistas todo el tiempo, y el trabajo de curador de arte contemporáneo se ha dado de manera natural, sin dejar de lado la especialización académica”, asegura.

Desde el 2022 hasta marzo del 2023, WAO Gallery ha realizado 16 exposiciones. En ellas se ha presentado una cartera de artistas muy variados y con calidad. Artistas jóvenes como Joaquín Basanta, Simón de los Santos y Vanessa Languasco; y artistas consagrados como Fernando Tamburini; también colectivas como “Cromatismos”; Además, exposiciones de fotografía de tema conservacionista, con Eladio Fernández, y las fotografías de la preservación de Manatíes de Fundemar.

González Auffant señala que la agenda está llena para lo que queda de este año 2023. Ya están programando la del año 2024, inclusive.

Legado

Aprovechando que el arte dominicano se encuentra en un excelente momento, ya que las crisis políticas, sociales y económicas que han surgido están liberando al creador en la búsqueda de nuevas respuestas, Chavón mantiene su contribución a la sociedad. Es que, con las actividades del museo y las visitas guiadas se aporta a un mayor conocimiento de la cultura dominicana, lo que refuerza la identidad nacional y el amor al patrimonio cultural dominicano. Lo mismo sucede con las exposiciones de la galería y el conocimiento de artistas dominicanos e internacionales, lo que permite poder analizar distintos momentos y estilos del arte actual.

M S Sobre Margarita

La pasión de Margarita González Auffant son los museos. Los estudió desde su juventud, habiendo trabajado a los 18 años en el Museo de Arte Moderno en el Departamento de Servicios Educativos, donde inicia su historia. Ha concebido más de siete museos y parques educativos dominicanos, entre estos Museo Infantil Trampolín, el Museo de la Telecomunicaciones, La Casa Museo presidente Ramón Cáceres, La Casa Museo General Gregorio Luperón y el Museo de la Virgen de la Altagracia, al lado de la Basílica en Higüey. Desde el punto de vista administrativo, dirigió la colección de Pago en Especia del Museo de Hacienda y Crédito Público de México y asumió la dirección del Museo Virreinal Alcázar de Colón, en la zona colonial de Santo Domingo.
