Frank Sinatra established his first financial interest in Nevada gaming when he purchased a partnership in the Sands Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. Business was so good, that in 1960 he bought a 25 percent stake in the rustic Cal-Neva Lodge up at his old stomping grounds on Tahoe’s North Shore. For the next three years he entertained the rich and famous, including John and Robert Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, the Rat Pack and his friends in the Mafia. But his Sierra Shangri-La was not to last.

Ever since Nevada legalized gaming in 1931, it has fought to keep the industry clean. The battle against gangster infiltration in the business had its beginnings in the first two decades of legalized gambling. There was no state tax on gaming and there was almost no state control. The result? Some shady characters became casino operators in Las Vegas before any serious attempt at control was legislated.

Sinatra enjoyed spending summers relaxing at beautiful Lake Tahoe and he wanted to re-vamp the quaint CalNeva Lodge into a world-class casino. The Sinatra Celebrity Showroom was constructed as a venue for big name entertainment and tunnels were excavated so performers and celebrities could travel

Frank Sinatra’s roots in Nevada go back to August 1951, when the entertainer arrived in Reno to establish residency in order to divorce his first wife Nancy. Sinatra was joined at the Riverside Hotel by actress Ava Gardner, his lover at the time. During his stay, Sinatra and Gardner spent the Labor Day weekend at Lake Tahoe, drinking and gambling at the Cal-Neva Lodge.

In 1955, the Nevada Gaming Control Board was created by the state legislature and four years later, the Nevada Gaming Commission was established to enforce laws regarding casino operations. Without strict enforcement, state officials were worried that the Federal Government would shut down their lucrative industry.

Sam Giancana, a hoodlum of national repute, figured prominently in that black book. Giancana was Chicago’s top Mafia boss, the successor to Al Capone. As a top member in La Cosa Nostra, Giancana controlled most of the organized crime in the Chicago area. He had served time in prison and been arrested more than 70 times. It was estimated that by 1960, Giancana had ordered the murders of more than 200 men.

The early 1960s were great for Sinatra and the Cal-Neva Lodge, but in August 1963 Nevada’s Gaming Control Board (NGCB) accused Sinatra of allowing known mobster Sam Giancana to stay at one of the cottages. Nevada’s governor, Grant Sawyer, had empowered the NGCB to clean up the industry’s shady reputation in the Silver State. They established a List of Excluded Persons, known to the press and general public as the “Black Book.”

Continued from page 3 between the showroom and the bungalows behind the hotel

In the summer of 1963, Giancana disappeared to avoid being subpoenaed by a Chicago federal grand jury and later showed up at the Cal-Neva. His presence was a serious infraction of Nevada gaming rules. When Sinatra had purchased the license to operate the Cal-Neva Lodge in 1960, Gov. Sawyer figured that the performer might be trouble. Sawyer had told the NGCB, “Because he is Sinatra, it is obvious that we will have a problem enforcing regulations against him. Do not be intimidated by him.” Sawyer later said, “My experience with Sinatra

and friendships in the music and entertainment industry drew movie stars to Tahoe like a Hollywood casting call. During the summer of 1961, classic acts like Mickey Rooney, the Andrews Sisters, the Modernairs, Dick Shawn and Vic Damone performed there. Sinatra and his Rat Pack buddy Dean Martin performed duets crooning to an audience that often included Marilyn Monroe, a frequent guest at the lodge. Sinatra himself was often a guest at Monroe’s Cottage #3, when the actress was visiting Tahoe.

Olsen did what very few people have ever done; he stood up to Frank Sinatra. In August 1963, Olsen issued subpoenas against the famous entertainer when he learned Giancana had stayed at the Cal-Neva Lodge with his girlfriend, singer Phyllis McGuire. Olsen also sent two agents to supervise the Labor Day money count at the Cal-Neva. Paul “Skinny” D’Amato, the general manager of the lodge, tried to bribe the agents with a couple of $100 bills and suggested that there was “nothing to worry about.” When he heard of the attempted payoff, Olson’s suspicions deepened. Trouble was brewing in paradise.

knew that challenging Sinatra would not be easy, but Gov. Sawyer ordered the board to pursue the charges anyway. Sawyer said, “He’s no better than anybody else is and you do with him exactly as you would with anyone in that situation. Do the right thing and do not be intimidated by him.” In response, Nevada Gaming Commission Chairman Edward A. Olsen ordered the NGCB to proceed with its investigation against

On October 22, the Nevada Gaming Control Board voted to revoke Sinatra’s gambling license, stating that he had brought discredit on the State’s gambling industry. The action forced Sinatra to sell off property valued at $3.5 million, a serious financial setback, even for a man as wealthy as Frank Sinatra. It was also an economic setback for the North Lake Tahoe gambling scene, which still waits to see so much talent and entertainment in one location.

The battle between Sinatra and the Gaming Commission made national headlines. Some newspaper columnists sided with Sinatra insisting that the charges were weak and suggested “guilt by association.” When President John F. Kennedy arrived in Las Vegas on a political campaign, he asked Nevada governor Grant Sawyer, “What are you guys doing to my friend, Frank Sinatra?”

But according to Olsen’s oral history at the University of Nevada – Reno: “Within one-half hour, about 4 p.m., my telephone rang again. It was Mr. Sinatra. To describe him as ‘irritated’ was a masterful understatement. He was infuriated. He asked why I couldn’t come up to the CalNeva to see him. I gave him the same reasons as I had given Hancock. To which he replied, “You’re acting like a [expletive deleted] cop. I just want to talk to you off the record.” Sinatra continued to bully Olsen, “Listen, Ed, I haven’t had to take this kind of [expletive deleted] from anybody in the country and I’m not going to take it from you people.”

Sinatra was livid. “It’s you and your [expletive deleted] subpoenas which have caused all this trouble,” yelled the entertainer. Olsen asserted, “If I want to see you, I’ll send a subpoena.” With that Sinatra sputtered, “You just try and find me. And if you do, you can look for a big, fat surprise. You remember that.”

Governor Sawyer held his ground and responded, “Well, Mr. President, I’ll try to take care of things here in Nevada, and I wish you luck on the national level.” President Kennedy quickly dropped the subject.

Nevada Gaming Commission hearing in the 1960s.

On August 31, Ed Olsen received a telephone call in his Carson City office from Mr. Newell Hancock, a partner in the accounting firm that represented the Cal-Neva Lodge. Hancock said that Mr. Sinatra was “irritated” about the negative publicity surrounding the subpoenas and wanted to discuss the investigation with Olsen. Hancock suggested that Olsen drive up to the lodge to enjoy dinner and catch that evening’s performance by Sinatra and Dean Martin. Olsen refused realizing that this would be inappropriate under the circumstances and insisted, “I will meet with him [Sinatra] any time, but it will be in my office.” Olsen wanted the meeting held in the presence of others, including his secretary who would make a record of the conversation. Hancock and Olsen agreed to a meeting the following day.

On October 7, 1963, hours before the deadline for Sinatra’s reply to the Gaming Commission’s charges, Frank announced that he was giving up his casinos in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. He stated, “No useful purpose would be served devoting my time and energies convincing the Nevada gaming officials that I should be part of the industry.”

Olsen realized that he was experiencing first-hand Sinatra’s street-tough business methodology. In his office, Olsen motioned to Mr. La France, chief of the Board’s investigative division, and Guy Farmer, assistant executive secretary of the Gaming Commission, to pick up the telephone extension and listen in. Olsen remembered that

AUTUMNTAYLORAT CREEK

While summer is a great time to visit the Taylor Creek Visitor Center and trails near South Lake Tahoe, October is special for all who are a part of the U.S. Forest Service, the center and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. It’s the month when Kokanee salmon come to spawn in Taylor Creek. Each year, the salmon “run” in mid-Sep tember through October.

One of the special treats of the Center has always been the Stream Profile Chamber, which has served as a pri mary attraction since it was constructed in 1968. Unfor tunately, it was vandalized in 2021 and has been closed for repairs since that time. Hopefully, next year, it will be updated and open to the public again.

While at the complex, be sure to take the 45-minute hike on the Rainbow Trail, which begins at the Visitor Center and winds through the meadow and marsh close to Taylor Creek. Following the walk, check out the interpretive signs and their bases; enjoy looking for

wildlife and the view on the observation deck overlook ing the creek. This time of year, bear sightings are pos sible and extreme caution is needed. Make sure to read all bear warning signs before leaving on the hike.

The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is located 3 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, on the lake side of Highway 89. The center offers a wide variety of maps, brochures, t-shirts, souvenirs and other items available for purchase. Visi tors may enjoy and participate in interpretive programs scheduled at the center and three more self-guided Fromtrails.

What we are doing: Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration event. By pitching in, you will help improve the ecosystem functions and wildlife habitats that surround Lake Tahoe. Following the catastrophic Cal dor Fire, upcoming winter storms threaten to wash tons of erodible soils and sediment off of steep, scorched mountain slopes and into the creeks and rivers that flow into Lake Tahoe. Healthy streams, meadows and wetlands act as natural pollution filters to Keep Tahoe Blue. Volunteers do not need previous experience to participate in the projects. With an average of 40 different bars including four different resort casinos, all within walking distance and no last call, nobody crawls like Reno and this is the night you don’t want to miss!

The Genoa “Candy Dance” originated in 1919 as an effort to raise money to pur chase street lights for the small, but enter prising community of Genoa, Nevada’s first settlement. Lillian Virgin Finnegan, daughter of then prominent Judge Daniel Webster Virgin, suggested the idea of a dance and making candy to pass around during the dance as an incentive for a good “turnout” of couples. The Genoa community did raise the needed funds for streetlights, but realized the monthly electric bill had to be paid. The candy makers were then called upon each year to help promote the “Candy Dance” and pay a year’s worth of electricity for the streetlights throughout the town. This annual event became the “Big Event of the Season.” Couples came from Reno, Carson City, Minden, Gard nerville and surrounding areas to join in the evening’s fun. The Arts & Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s, and later became a two-day event. The first Faire was held on the front lawn of a private residence in Sierra Shadows on Genoa Lane with twelve vendors. A few years later the popular Faire was moved to the Mormon Station Historic State Monument grounds. Expanding proved necessary and now Faire exhibitors are also found along a major portion of the downtown area. With all the people visiting the Faire these days, the streets in and out of Genoa are temporarily closed during the day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Different from full-time or part-time employment, a side hustle is a flexible way to provide services while being your own boss. You control which opportunities you want to take and can independently supplement your primary income or bridge the gap between jobs. Side hustles can even provide opportunities for people who can’t work traditional jobs. In fact, 93% of Americans have a side hustle, according to research from insuranks.com, and 44% of survey respondents said they’re doing it to make ends meet. Gig opportunities, like shopping orders and delivering goods using your personal vehicle, are increasingly popular as side hustles.

As inflation increases, many Americans are looking for ways to make some extra cash to reach financial goals faster, save for a big purchase or simply make ends meet. In fact, 41% of Americans need additional income from sources like side hustles, according to a Bankrate survey, up from 31% in 2019.

Learn more about how to make extra cash through gig opportunities by visiting drive4spark.com or downloading the app. Photos courtesy of Getty Images

AMERICANS ARE TURNING TO SIDE HUSTLES TO COMBAT INFLATION

The rise of the gig economy and a variety of side hustle options may be a solution for some. One option, the Spark Driver platform, powers delivery services for Walmart, Sam’s Club and other retailers, allowing drivers to deliver everything from groceries and cleaning supplies to tools and home decor. Available in more than 600 cities and all 50 states, the platform allows independent contractors to earn money by delivering or shopping and delivering orders in flexible, convenient time windows of their choosing.

Benefits of Side Hustles

• Earning Potential: Many people turn to side hustles as a supplement to full-time positions with specific, money-oriented goals in mind. For example, most drivers on the Spark Driver platform drive as a secondary source of income. In order to reach a desired goal, it’s important to know how much you can expect to earn. When receiving an offer, the platform will show the minimum amount you earn for completing the delivery, so drivers know their earnings before accepting offers. Most deliveries also allow for tips, and incentives and referrals create additional opportunities for increasing earnings.

• Flexibility and Convenience: Available almost anywhere at times that work for your schedule, side hustles allow you to be your own boss and earn extra cash when you want. Be sure to pick one that fits your schedule and can be done at any time. Many offer different windows of time to complete the service and let you choose where you’re willing to travel to, which makes it easy to plan around other obligations.

“The Spark Driver platform has made a huge difference in my life,” driver Christina Hinssen said. “It gives me the flexibility to make deliveries when I want and I can spend more time with my daughter. It has given me extra cash to pay off my car and make extra house payments to get my house paid down.”

What is a Side Hustle?

While most people turn to side hustles because of the potential for additional earnings, there are other benefits that can make them a fit for you and your situation, such as:

• Simplicity: The ideal side hustle is one that can be done without heavy investment or training. Many gig opportunities offer quick sign-up processes through easy-to-use apps and only require a background check, smartphone, valid driver’s license and operational vehicle.

• Encourage open communication. Have conversations about what your kids see and do online and talk with them about potential dangers. Avoid lecturing in favor of an open exchange of information.

to protect your children and family in this digital age with these tips:

• Be clear about your position on bullying. From the safe distance of a screen, it’s easier for kids (and adults) to say things they’d never say in person. Teach your kids to handle problems constructively offline and avoid engaging in attacks on others through social media, email and other platforms.

• Stay on alert. Not all apps are completely safe (even the ones you can access from trusted stores) and not all filters are foolproof. Keep close tabs on what your kids are downloading by reading comments and reviews, and regularly monitoring what kind of content they see.

• Help manage their online reputation. Behaviors that once resulted in a day or two of hallway chatter can now live forever. Documenting mischief online is only fun until it spills over into real life and everyone sees those mistakes in full color – including prospective future employers.

• Teach smart practices. With all the independence that comes with college life, this is an ideal time for your student to take personal responsibility for his or her online security, including learning about virus protection, updating software, avoiding scams and backing up data.

Protecting Children in a Digital Age

Keeping a watchful eye on your kids requires an increasing level of tech savvy many parents find intimidating. Not only are your kids vulnerable to bad actors online, but your family’s personal information could be at risk, as Learnwell.how

Elementary-Age Children

• Reinforce the risks. Once they’re on their own, kids may feel more liberated to make their own choices online. However, college students are easy prey for identity theft and worse. Remind them what’s at stake if they fail to protect their identity and private information, like where they live and what they do on a regular basis.

Middle School and High School Kids

• Continue talking about privacy. You can never have too many conversations about privacy. What seems like harmless sharing on social media can be quite revealing. For example, frequent posts about visits to a favorite store or restaurant can allow a predator to begin tracking behavior patterns that make your child a target. It’s also important for kids to understand how their privacy settings work. For example, settings that allow exposure to friends of friends make their visibility to strangers much broader than they may realize.

College Students

• Make their inherent interest in privacy work in your favor. Kids in this age group, particularly toward the middle school years, understand the concept of privacy and value it immensely. Use that context to help them understand what goes online is there to stay. Talk about what kinds of information should always be kept private, including identifying details like addresses and social security numbers.
