Impact Report 2017

On behalf of the Alliance Fund Board, we are pleased to provide you with this Impact Report that details how your donations have made a lasting, positive impact in our community. For over 18 years, the Alliance Fund has been making grants to support LGBTQ programs and initiatives in Southern Arizona and, thanks to your generosity, we have awarded 166 grants to more than 60 organization totaling over $740,000.

Year in Review

This year, we are proud to provide grants totaling $52,835 to 13 outstanding organizations ranging from Camp Born this Way, which supports transgender youth, to Senior Pride’s work in raising awareness about the issues facing our LGBTQ elders. We encourage you to review the full list of our 2017 grant recipients on page 2. We simply couldn’t do this work without you. We are deeply grateful to the generosity of our donors, who are listed on page 3. Our community impact is only as great as the strength of our contributors. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of LGBTQ people in Southern Arizona. Tim Olcott Chair, Alliance Fund Board

What do longtime supporters of the Alliance Fund Gloria Devore, Sylvia Mulka, and Doug Noffsinger and Roger Funk (not pictured) have in common? In early May, these four generous donors pledged $150,000 over three years to the Alliance Fund to hire and fund the salary of a much needed Director of Development. Thank you for your inspiring benevolence and commitment to our LGBTQ communities.

About the LGBT&S Alliance Fund The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Straight (LGBT&S) Alliance Fund is a fund held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA). The Alliance Fund’s mission is through philanthropy to engage the community to support innovative LGBTQ programs in Southern Arizona. Created in 1999 in partnership with the National Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Partnership, the Fund addresses the chronic pattern of underfunding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender programs and supports efforts to address these issues through philanthropy and endowment building. The Alliance Fund connects donors with projects that benefit the LGBTQ community through annual competitive grant rounds. For more information, visit www.alliancefund.org.

Philanthropy Builds Stronger LGBTQ Communities Philanthropy is greater than merely funding. Through the LGBT&S Alliance Fund, donors, volunteers, and grantees come together to support stronger LGBTQ communities in Southern Arizona. The Alliance Fund builds community through our “big picture” perspective. We focus on the needs of our many LGBTQ communities as a greater fabric. Through a big picture perspective and our commitment to listening to and being relevant to our communities, we recognize gaps that need to be filled in programs or services, hidden groups that need to be reached, and new opportunities that need timely attention. For the Alliance Fund, this big picture is critical when addressing potential donors about the importance of their gifts and when making the hard decisions about which organizations receive grant awards. Another way the Alliance Fund builds community is during our annual fundraising campaign. Each year, several hundred donors – both LGBTQ and straight allies – provide the funds for all of the grants we award. Whether $10.00 or $10,000, Alliance Fund donors provide gifts that are truly “from the heart.” We also build community during our annual grantmaking cycle. Staff and volunteers from organizations throughout southern Arizona spend hours responding to questions about the needs of LGBTQ communities, how they respond to those needs, how they work with others, and how they will measure the effectiveness of their work. From those on the frontlines, grant applications provide us with relevant information about the LGBTQ communities. The Alliance Fund’s big picture relies on such connections to assure that our grant awards are responsive to the needs of the community. We are all here together in diversity, each and all of us belong, and our well-being does come from being linked to a healthy community. The Alliance Fund is proud to be a pillar of our resilient, vibrant, and inclusive Southern Arizona LGBTQ community.

The 2017 Doug Noffsinger Straight Ally Award: Anne Maley-Schaffner In June, the Alliance Fund proudly presented Anne Maley-Schaffner with the Doug Noffsinger Straight Ally Award. For over 25 years, Anne has been a loyal friend of the LGBTQ community, helping protect our rights and safeguard our health and well-being. Congratulations, Anne!

LEGACY DONORS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Shelly Fishman, an independent financial advisor, and Bob Kafes, a psychotherapist in private practice, have incorporated the Alliance Fund in their estate planning. When asked why they chose the Alliance Fund Shelly said, Bob and Shelly at home with their dog Gigi “I like the idea that the Fund is in close contact with virtually all the nonprofits which serve the Southern Arizona LGBTQ community in order to evaluate and determine the best grant awards that produce the highest levels of impact.” Bob added, “And it’s critical to me that the Alliance Fund, as an integral part of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, can ensure us the stability and permanence, which is essential for a complex estate plan to have a truly positive philanthropic impact.” Did you know that less than 10% of Americans include nonprofit organizations in their estate plans? Here are seven easy ways you can include a gift to the LGBT&S

Alliance Fund, a program of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, in your estate plans: 1. Include a gift to the Alliance Fund under your will or trust agreement. 2. Name the Alliance Fund as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. 3. Name the Alliance Fund as a beneficiary of an IRA or other qualified plan. 4. Name the Alliance Fund as a beneficiary of a transferon-death (TOD) or payable on death (POD) account. 5. Consider creation of a charitable remainder trust under which you retain a stream of income for the term of your life, with the remainder distributed to the Alliance Fund. 6. Consider retaining the use of your home, ranch or farm real estate during your life, but upon death, the real estate is distributed to the Alliance Fund. 7. Consider a transfer of up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to the Alliance Fund. There are many ways the Alliance Fund can serve as a part of your own estate plans.
