Dr Kevin Barnett grew up in Buckingham and served as a GP at North End Surgery for 5 years before moving through various Clinical and Medical Director jobs across the South East and London whilst simultaneously working as a selfemployed GP. In November 2018 he finally took the plunge and opened his own private surgery on the outskirts of town.

Committed to providing excellent healthcare to the local community, @MK18 Private Medical Practice has come to be known for its outstanding level of service and its highlyskilled, genuine, caring team. The practice was also rated as Good by the CQC at the first attempt.

Dr Barnett is an experienced clinician, having qualified 21 years ago, and alongside @MK18 he currently practices as a GP in urgent care centres and supports the local Mini and Junior section of Buckingham Rugby Club. Over that period, he has gained extensive experience in treatment of acute illness, chronic disease and injuries – including repairing broken rugby players’ faces!

Part of this growth has seen the need for additional team members, and in 2021 @MK18 welcomed Dr Helen Butler to assist with GP consultations.

Their latest addition to the team is Alison, Practice Administrator, who brings a wealth of NHS experience to the practice. Last but not least, the team is headed up by Dr Barnett’s wife, Zoe, who is Practice Manager. They genuinely believe you will not meet a more friendly team. @MK18 Private Medical Practice offers a wide range of services including face-to-face GP appointments, minor surgery and well man and well woman checks. Yoga is for Everyone…

As an Osteopath and a Yoga Teacher I truly believe that Yoga is a practice that everyone can benefit from. I have been teaching yoga locally for 16 years and during that time have heard many reasons why some people may be reluctant to try Yoga.

Here are the top three reasons that people give for not coming to a class 1. “I am not flexible enough” or “I can’t touch my toes” Being flexible is not a pre-requisite for practising yoga, it is one of the many physical benefits of a regular practise. Yoga naturally attracts people who are genetically flexible (dancers, gymnasts etc) and these are the people used to advertise Yoga commercially and on social media, which is a shame as it can discourage people from wanting to try a class. It is important to remember that most people will never achieve that extreme range of movement. However, Yoga can be adapted to suit your individual flexibility and finding a teacher who can understand and tailor your practice to your individual anatomy is key.

Understanding that the Yoga you see on Instagram is not the essence of a traditional Yoga practice. Yoga is much more than a physical stretching programme… it’s true benefits come from the effects on the cardiovascular system, on stress management and the mental health benefits of meditation and mindfulness. Yoga is a process for you as a whole person, not just your muscles.

2. “I am worried about aggravating pain or an injury” As with all activities involving movement there is always a risk of injury and this is as true for Yoga as much as it is for going to the gym or running. When you start any new activity it is important to work with someone who can understand your medical history and adapt the class where appropriate. This is especially important if you have a previous or reoccurring injury that you are worried about. Yoga is a great tool for preventing and recovering from injuries, but EVERY BODY is different, and a one size fits all approach is not ideal for people

with a more complex medical history.

3. “It’s not hard enough” Yoga can be gentle and restorative but can also be physically demanding and make you sweat. In a class you may lay still and meditate in a pose for a long time, or you may flow in a sequence of moving postures. Some styles of Yoga involve lots of strength and some require mental concentration. Yoga is a varied practice with many different styles and in addition every teacher will also have a different approach. It’s worth spending the time talking to the teacher and making sure that your intention for practice suits their teaching style.

Functional testing is sometimes recommended to clients by Naturopaths and Nutritionists as well as other Functional Medicine practitioners to evaluate the status of health by measuring how the physiology of the body is functioning, rather than simply looking at indications of disease, which many, more typical health practitioners may focus on.

This is based on the premise that we understand there’s often a root cause to illness and rather than simply treating the symptoms of a health concern, we want to examine the role of diet, environmental toxins, infections and other lifestyle choices as potential triggers for illness. ‘ We are looking for results which reflect optimal health, rather than the concept that wellness is simply the absence of disease’.

Good quality clinical testing can help us identify what those causes might be.

Testing can look at all areas of our health by investigating underlying imbalances that may be creating or contributing to a disease process and systemic imbalance. It can be particularly insightful for those who suffer f rom constant fatigue, digestive problems, (including IBS diagnosis), abnormal weight gain, history of food allergies or intolerances and those who suspect thyroid problems (even though a GP may have had this tested with ‘ normal’ or ‘borderline’ results) as well as other hormonal concerns such as PCOS , Menapause etc .

Conventional medicine doesn’t always look at the same factors and can follow a more rigid, one size f its all approach to testing. ‘Clinically’ normal reference ranges can be very broad and many people, who feel unwell, are told their results are ‘ normal’, leaving them feeling more f rustrated than reassured about their concerns.

What tests are available?

Functional testing tends to place priority on inflammation, nutritional def iciencies, toxic exposure and heavy metals, weaknesses in the immune system, hormones and neurotransmitters and the mind-body connection. There are many types of tests available but some of those regularly used are: • Digestive Function (bacterial imbalance, inflammation and infection, parasites, etc) • Food Intolerances • Cardio & Metabolic Tests • Micronutrients (vitamin and mineral def iciencies) • Methylation Plasma (how well your body is able to detoxify and other processes) • Stress & Thyroid Hormones • Male & Female Hormones The cost of testing can vary and some testing can be pricey but there is no doubt that in many cases it can be the quickest and most effective method of identifying a cause of symptoms. Happy New Year! I hope you all had the Christmas and New Year celebrations that you wanted to. How lovely was it to have enjoyed some festive events and see our communities starting to get back together again? What else will 2022 bring do we think? How many of you are making New Years Resolutions…or breaking them already?!

A lot of people turn to goals of a healthier lifestyle including eating habits, some being long term changes and some short-term fads.

Plant based diets have grown significantly in popularity, but some people find themselves missing what they have omitted from their plate. If you haven’t heard of the following phrases by now you soon will as they are set to play a big part in 2022... Reducetarianism (easier to spell than say!) which is gradually reducing the amount of meat and fish eaten in exchange for plant-based options has been around for a while now. Flexitarianism is more of an ongoing flexible diet to occasionally include meat, fish, dairy and eggs alongside a greater number of vegetables, fruits and plantbased options. Whatever healthier choices you make – more fruit and veg, less meat, more fish, less sugar/unhealthy fats or just to be more mindful of portion sizes, any positive change will do you good so enjoy it!

This issue I have included a refreshing detox cucumber water which can help with lowering blood pressure, boosting bone support, support healthy skin and help with weight loss and digestion. To start the day a simple breakfast of Banana Pancakes which tick a lot of healthy choice boxes…and taste great! A new way to enjoy a fizzy drink…as a sauce for your chicken, try the Asian Sprite chicken for a tasty lunch or supper. For a sweet treat I have included a baked apple recipe which is not only healthy but also a way to use up leftover mincemeat if you still have some!

Twyford Pantry Two-ingredient Banana Pancakes (makes 4)

Ingredients 2 large eggs 1 medium banana

Method Puree eggs and banana in a blender until smooth.

Lightly oil a large non-stick skillet with an oiled paper towel and heat over medium heat. Using 2 tablespoons of batter for each pancake, drop 4 mounds of batter into the pan. Cook until bubbles appear on the surface and the edges look dry, 2 to 4 minutes. Using a thin spatula, gently flip the pancakes and cook until browned on the bottom, 1 to 2 minutes more. Transfer the pancakes to

Winter Gardening Advice from Preston Bissett Nurseries As real winter hardy gardeners we know there are some very beneficial outdoor hands on winter jobs from which your garden will truly benefit this month. Many suggested gardening task lists may seem limited to preparatory jobs and whilst these are important, I urge you to get your wellies on grab a spade and show that wheel barrow some action.

A gardeners work is never done.

We have had the shortest day so spring is on its way and lets be ready.

• As long as the the ground is not frozen or waterlogged you can plant. Much of what we were planting and pruning in October may continue as long as the weather does not freeze. Most evergreen and deciduous shrubs can be planted. I would only avoid planting some of the Mediterranean shrubs and herbs.

• If you haven’t moved any shrubs or plants that need relocating in your garden do it now before they start to wake up.

• Select your seeds for 2021 our vegetable and annual seeds are now all in stock.

• Whilst mild you can get your deciduous hedges in the ground. Take advantage of great value but short bare root hedging season which ends in late spring. The sooner hedges are planted the better.

• Prune your wisteria again back to about 2 buds on each stem. If your leave the wispy long branches the flower will just get weaker and weaker. Better to have two or three really good flowers.

• Mulch, mulch and mulch its so good for the garden. Topping up the borders with organic matter such as soil conditioner or farm yard manure will rejuvenate your soil

and a happy soil produces happy plants whether they be fruit bushes or perennials.

• Don’t leave planting garlic too late, do it now while its is cold.

• Established fruit and trees benefit from a good feed now.

• Its the best time to plant rhubarb. Its also an ideal time to pop your forcers over your plants now we have had a frost for an early forced crop of lovely straight stems.

• Seed your broad beans.

• Begin the race for perfect early sweet peas and seed them under cover to plant out in the spring.

• Keep an eye on your snowdrops. Catch them just as they finish that is your window to lift and divide them.

• Its a good time to prune your trees to shape.

• Remember to feed the birds.

• We do plan ahead. Traditionally it is time to plant your seeds for this year, think about any reorganising of shrubs and perennials you may wish to get on with before the soil warms up and think about what plants you want to add to your borders.
