Weight Management is Calorie Management I’m Rich, a local personal trainer and head coach of Intent 2 Improve (www.intent2improve.com).

more than those with a normal metabolism when calories are controlled).

In this second column for Community Contact I want to address a really common issue people have when it comes to weight loss, I won’t win any awards for sympathy or revolutionary methods, but what I will promise is that I will only ever deliver truth with 100% integrity.

Likewise with life-long weight issues. You might have struggled with your weight since being a kid, your parents might have also struggled with their weight. That doesn’t automatically mean it is inherently genetic, it’s much more likely a result of all of your nutrition habits long-term.

So many people love to argue “I’ve got a slow metabolism”, “I don’t even eat that bad” or “I’ve always struggled with my weight”.

People often aren’t happy to hear this, as it’s reassuring to have something to point the finger at and blame. But realistically, once you overcome that emotional hurdle, this is the best news you could possibly get because you’re ‘normal’ after all and can take complete control of your weight and subsequently your health for the long-term without any unnecessary interventions.

The truth is that weight management comes down to calorie management, not genetics (in most cases, rarely yes it does), not one single food or group of foods being the problem. To lose weight you must be in a consistent calorie deficit. For most people, they will watch what they eat Monday to Friday reasonably well, just enough to be in a slight calorie deficit (typically about 200 calories per day). Then over the weekend they will “reward” themselves for being good (typically over-consume by approximately 500 calories per day - which is not that much food when you look at it). This is why so many people will think they’re on a diet but will not make progress, or will make progress much slower than they’d like. It’s also very rare for somebody to actually have a slow metabolism (but it can happen, despite that, you should never self-diagnose a serious medical issue). Even then, the answer is still a calorie deficit (research shows that those with a slow metabolism do not struggle to lose weight any

I don’t want you to have to read food labels or count calories any more than you do, but by avoiding it and continuing to pursue diets that simply focus on cutting out one group of foods to create a calorie deficit you are avoiding learning about how to truly manage your weight and health long-term, which keeps perpetuating the longterm cycle of dieting year in year out. If you have any questions or wish to make an enquiry please contact info@intent2improve.com and we’d be happy to help. All the best, Rich. info@intent2improve.com www.intent2improve.com

IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

Your garden should be ablaze with colour and fragrance with all your efforts now coming to fruition. The secret is maintaining the interest as well as thinking about the new season ahead and the opportunities it brings too!

H

ELPING HAND keeping weeds at bay has kept you busier than you expected and you are looking for a way to cut down, then now is time to think about establishing some ground cover planting. There is now a wide range of pretty but undemanding plants that will quickly mat up to form a carpet in troublesome areas of the garden and provide years of trouble free cover. These include evergreen and herbaceous perennials (pictured Geranium ‘Roxanne’), shrubs (pictured Cotoneaster dammeri major), especially low growing conifers, ferns and even ornamental grasses. It is best to choose plants that are relatively low growing yet dense enough to exclude weeds, even when dormant.

H

ERBS Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the frost. Dry or freeze your herbs to use in the kitchen later on. Thin Parsley to 25cm (10in) between plants so it can establish a good root system before the winter. Take cuttings of herbs such as Rosemary (pictured), Sage or Mint now to bulk up supplies. Put cuttings in moist, well-drained potting compost (one-part grit to one-part multipurpose compost) and place in a cold frame. On a dry sunny day, collect seeds of herbs such as Dill, Fennel, Caraway and Chervil and dry in a warm spot out of direct sunlight. Chervil must be sown immediately. Established clumps of Chives can be divided now.

M

UST-DO’S Containers will still need close attention to keep them in good condition at this time of year. Deadhead plants in hanging baskets, tubs and other containers regularly and often to keep them flowering and check regularly to see if they need watering. Feeding is essential now. Use Phostrogen or Miracle-Go as alternating between the two generally gives good results over the growing season. Keep your Camellias (pictured) and Rhododendrons well-watered and apply an Ericaceous fertiliser at this time of year to ensure that next year’s flower buds develop fully. The need for pest and disease control should be much reduced by now but you should still keep your eyes open for any late burst of fungus diseases. Use Bayer Fungus Fighter Plus to deal with most ornamental diseases include Blackspot, Mildew and Leaf spot. You can also use this product to control powdery mildew on greenhouse crops of Cucumber (pictured), Courgette and summer Squash.

L

AWNS Don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rains will soon make it green again. Lawn growth slows down as we approach late summer so raise the cutting height (pictured adjusting on a Flymo) of your lawn mower to help the grass cope. If you’re planning on laying a new lawn this autumn, prepare the area now to give it time to settle. This also allows weeds to germinate so you can clear the area thoroughly before planting.

F

RUIT POINTERS If you have plants fruiting in containers, make sure you give them a high potash liquid feed to keep plants healthy and productive. Remember to feed your lemon tree (and other citrus fruit trees) throughout summer with a specialist citrus fertiliser such as Baby Bio Citrus feed (pictured), which is available in the Shop. Plant out some new strawberry plants or peg down existing runners of strawberries to develop some new plants for a good crop next year. Tidy up existing strawberry plants and remove any old straw from around the plants to improve ventilation and reduce the risk of pests and diseases. Keep birds and squirrels off your berries with netting or some old net curtains. Protect your crops with a bird scarer made from CDs tied to strings. Harvest your fruit trees - Cherries, Plums, Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots should all be ripe now! If you have a glut of autumn Raspberries, Blackberries or Loganberries, freeze them on trays for a couple of hours and then bag them up to use over winter. Prune the fruited stems of your Blackcurrant bushes back by one-third directly after harvesting and give them a Vitax Q4 feed to help stimulate new growth for next season. Cut back the fruited canes of your summer Raspberries, leaving the new green canes for next year’s crop (pictured). Tie in next year’s Raspberry canes to support wires or fencing. Apply some Vitax Q4 fertiliser along the row to help promote some additional growth before the end of August.

F

IVE MINUTE JOBS Hedges can be given a final trim now before they slow down or stop growing. Leaving cutting until now gives sufficient time for fledging birds to have flown the nest. Water plants thoroughly when needed instead of every day. A thorough watering supports plants for up 7 days, while merely wetting the surface not only wastes water, it encourages weeds and this can lead to surface rooting which makes the plants more vulnerable. Turn the compost in your compost bins every month to keep it well aerated and to help speed up decomposition. Christmas Potato tubers should be coming into Garden Centre shortly and these will need to be planted up quickly to get a crop of new potatoes for December. Allow just one tuber to a 30-45cm (12-18in) pot and use a multipurpose compost such as Levingtons to grow them in. You need to place some compost at the bottom of the pot and then position the tuber and cover it with 5cm (2in) of compost. As the foliage develops, earth up the potatoes with further compost until the container is full to within 5cm (2in) of the top. Leave a lip to aid watering. Keep well-watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser such as Tomorite each week. You can grow them outdoors until late autumn then move into a porch or greenhouse which remains frost-free. The foliage will naturally yellow and die down in late autumn and can then be removed and composted. Good varieties to look out for include ‘Charlotte’ (pictured), ‘Duke of York’, ‘Maris Peer’ and ‘Pentland Javelin’ – all being first and second early varieties. The Twyford Pantry I hope you’ve all had a great summer so far, we’ve definitely had some lovely weather to enjoy the great British outdoors this year. With saving for our wedding well under way I thought it would be good to show you some recipes this time to make more use of your leftovers and keep pennies in the pocket! Did you know each household throws away an average £700 a year with food waste and most family households could save up to £60 a month creatively using leftover food! If it inspires you to think more about how you could save money

and reduce food waste there is plenty of info on the internet and lots of recipes to choose from whatever the season. Enjoy what’s left of Summer and regardless of the weather it brings, I hope you enjoy time in your kitchens and great food with family and friends… and hopefully making it stretch that bit further! SERENITY ESCAPES

Always fancied a retreat?

If you have never made time for yourself to go on retreat you are missing a trick. It is the most rewarding time, a real gift to yourself. It gives you a chance to reset the clock. Life is, of course, hectic for most of us these days. It’s pretty much non stop with phones and emails and the demands of binge Box set watching! What happens on Retreat. We start early most days, with a freshly pressed juice or lemon water. Then off to Yoga for an hour of gentle yoga. Moving your body in ways it’s forgotten it could move. This alone results in a sense of wellbeing. After Yoga we go for a delicious healthy brunch with amazing foods in abundance. Help yourself to whatever takes your fancy. Following this there is time for relaxing on a sun bed, and listening to the sounds of the Ocean and soaking up the warmth and the sun. The afternoon may be filled with a leisurely walk from trip beach to beach. If you want to use the time to learn about food as medicine you may book into one of our workshops on “Eating for longevity” or “ Foods to enhance energy” or “Eating yourself calm”. As the sun is sinking we begin our evening yoga session with a beautiful meditation looking out over the rolling ocean waves. If in Goa you might catch site of the dolphins who live in the baysurfing the waves. Our meditations are guided to enhance your experience and may include Yoga Nidra. This is a fabulous way to reset old ingrained negative habits, or break through blockages which may have kept you stuck in old patterns. Do I need to go with someone? Absolutely not. Our groups are friendly, warm lovely people. Very welcoming and inclusive. Does it matter if I have never meditated or done much yoga before? Absolutely not. Our groups are just people who want to return restored. No previous experience required! www.serenityescapes.org runs retreats in Goa, Ibiza, Majorca Devon, Cornwall and Canada. Susie O’Kelly is Psychologist, Nutritionist, Functional Medicine Consultant and practises in Buckingham and Harley Street, London.

Autumn BY ALI SMITH

Format: Hardback 1st Edition ISBN: 9780241207000 Price: £16.99 Hand Signed by Ali Smith to the Title Page Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester A breathtakingly inventive new novel from the Man Booker-shortlisted and Baileys Prize-winning author of How to be both. Autumn. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. That’s what it felt like for Keats in 1819. How about Autumn 2016? Daniel is a century old. Elisabeth, born in 1984, has her eye on the future. The United Kingdom is in pieces, divided by a historic once-in-a-generation summer. Love is won, love is lost. Hope is hand in hand with hopelessness. The seasons roll round, as ever. Ali Smith’s new novel is a meditation on a world growing ever more bordered and exclusive, on what richness and worth are, on what harvest means. This first in a seasonal quartet casts an eye over our own time. Who are we? What are we made of? Shakespearian jeu d’esprit, Keatsian melancholy, the sheer bright energy of 1960s Pop art: the centuries cast their eyes over our own history-making. Here’s where we’re living. Here’s time at its most contemporaneous and its most cyclic. From the imagination of the peerless Ali Smith comes a shape-shifting series, wide-ranging in timescale and light-footed through histories, and a story about ageing and time and love and stories themselves. Here comes Autumn.
