The Parables: The Ten Virgins [Week 6]

Page 1

Matthew 24:1-3

1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

The Disciples Ask Three Questions:

• When will the Temple fall?

• What are the signs of Your coming?

• What about the end of the age?

Matthew 24:1-3

As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Matthew 24:6-8

6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

Matthew 24:9

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.

Matthew 24:30

“They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory”

The Parable of The Ten Virgins

The Bridegroom Is Coming!

25:1–13 1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

Matthew 25:1–13

5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’

25:1–13

7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’

Matthew 25:1–13 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.

Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’

But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

The Door Will Not Stay Open Forever!

Why Oil?

Why Oil?

Oil Is Essential For Light.

Matthew 5:14–16

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Why Oil?

Oil Symbolizes The Holy Spirit.

1 Samuel 16:13

What Does Readiness Look Like?

Readiness Takes...

A Living Relationship with Christ

Matthew 7:21-23

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’

23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Father, We thank You for the words of Jesus. Thank You for warning us in love, for calling us to readiness. Lord, forgive us for lamps that sometimes run low. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit. Help us to live with eyes on eternity, hearts surrendered, and hands ready to serve. May we not be caught unprepared, but found faithful, watchful, and full of oil when You return.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
