VOTE FOR LEGO FORTH BRIDGE Michael Dineen, from Clarkston, is looking for support to see his creation turned into a Lego kit

A Clarkston civil engineer is calling for people to support his bid to see the Forth Bridge turned into a Lego kit. Michael Dineen has entered his impressive replica of the iconic landmark spanning the Firth of Forth into a special Lego competition. He needs 10,000 votes – all free and anonymous – for toy brand Lego to consider adding a Forth Bridge to their products. Michael, 41, said: “I took on the bizarre task of designing and building a scale model of the incredible Forth Bridge out of Lego last year.

“My motivation was to submit it to Lego via a portal they have called Lego IDEAS, which allows fans who think Lego should have something on their shelves to design, build and promote it. “If I can get 10,000 people to support my idea then Lego will consider adding it to their shelves as an official set for sale all over the world. “Finally, there would be the first official Scottish set included in their selection.”

Transform your Conservatory into an ALL YEAR round Sunroom

The Forth Bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker and completed in 1890. It survived two world wars and continues to operate as a functional railway bridge to this day.

“Many people are not aware just how long the bridge is in reality – 2.4km – and just how slender it is in relation to its length. I found it very rewarding to design something so unique.”

It is now one of three bridges that span the Firth close to South Queensferry and it is acclaimed as Scotland’s sixth World Heritage Site.

Every element used in the design is an existing, official Lego part. Michael painted the pieces used for the bridge deck, the hinges and ball joints in dark red.

It took Michael, 41, four months to complete his own Forth Bridge from Lego. He said: “There was a lot of trial and error that went into the design. I experimented with various parts and eventually found those that made it possible to construct such a complex structure.

He believes the Forth Bridge will make a great Lego set. He said: “I love to educate and inspire others about Civil Engineering and I have built this model to do just that.” Go vote see https://ideas.lego.com/ projects/b8f1ba39-7027-4995-9cf1c579df699364

Judge Meghan Trainor was successful in recruiting Holly to Team Meghan for the 'Battles' round

Holly Scally, from Newton Mearns singing on TV talent show The Voice

A teenage singer from Newton Mearns is on the way to stardom after appearing on the popular TV talent show, The Voice UK.

Meghan admitted on the show: “I can’t believe you are only 16, it freaks me out. You are so talented, cool and calm.

Holly Scally, 16, amazed judges on the prime-time Saturday night programme at the beginning of February with her rendition of Sam Smith’s Lay Me Down.

“This is where you belong, out in front. I’d love to be your coach and I would guide you all the way to the top because you are so amazing.”

The St Ninian’s High School pupil, who revealed she has been singing since she was “two or three”, attended the show’s Blind Auditions with her family, including mum Gillian. Gillian, who is also mum to Holly’s twin brother Shea, said: “Holly’s quite mature for a 16-year-old. She’s only recently started singing publicly

and the school has encouraged that. This is the beginning.” Before the audition, Holly admitted she was “unbelievably nervous” and has been watching The Voice UK since she was 10 years old. Holly then performed the Sam Smith hit as judges Sir Tom Jones, Meghan Trainor, Will.i.am and Olly Murs sat and listened with their famous red chairs facing away. Hitmaker Meghan was first to turn with Troublemaker singer, Olly, also spinning his chair to face Holly.

Holly revealed that Meghan was the coach she wanted, so she now joins Team Meghan in the show’s “Battles” round. The Voice UK launched on BBC One in March 2012. There are five different stages to the show: producers' auditions, blind auditions, battle phase, knockouts and live shows.

CHRIS SUPPORTS ACTIVE KIDS

ADVERTISE

HERE

FROM AS LITTLE AS

A former tennis coach from Newton Mearns is encouraging youngsters to get active through his inspiring health and wellbeing programmes. Chris Rose, 35 (pictured right), has helped to organise the Jump2it programme for schools across East Renfrewshire. The initiative, created by Scottish Sporting Futures, involves Glasgow Rocks’ professional basketball players visiting schools in the area to support pupils to develop their skills on court, as part of an innovative health and citizenship programme. Almost 1000 school pupils from across East Renfrewshire are taking part in the scheme. Chris, who formerly coached at Giffnock Tennis Club,

explained: “The Jump2it programme takes a creative approach to educating pupils on important issues. “The players are really inspiring and talked to pupils about a range of health and social issues, such as mental health, anti-social behaviour and healthy eating. “The pupils enjoyed the workshops and coaching opportunities and loved meeting the Glasgow Rocks’ basketball players.” The Jump2it programme consists of roadshow visits by Glasgow Rocks, basketball coaching delivered by East Renfrewshire Active Schools team and the regional final competition.

As part of his role, Chris encourages children and young people to get active by creating opportunities for them to take part in sport or physical activity. He does this by establishing and training a network of volunteers and coaches to deliver sessions in schools and builds links with local sports clubs. Chris has worked as an Active Schools’ Coordinator for the past eight years and for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure for the past year. He added: “It’s a privilege to do this job and being part of a great Active Schools team. I love inspiring young people to get active, providing opportunities they may otherwise not have had and developing the skills of the fantastic people who work with these young people.” You can follow the programme on Twitter @Jump2it_SSF.

FIVE YEARS OF FOREST FUN Outdoor nursery Greenbank Woodland Play has celebrated their fifth birthday party in style with their forest families and friends. The group gathered at their woodland base, at Clarkston’s Greenbank Gardens, to toast five years of outdoor play and learning. They tucked into woodland-themed treats and celebrated with outdoor play. A nursery spokesperson said: “What an amazing day. Thank you so much to the children, parents and staff who helped to make it go so smoothly. It was so lovely to see all of the children and how they have grown and to catch up with all our wonderful parents. “Here’s to the next five years.” Greenbank Woodland Play is

an outdoor-based partnership nursery with a holistic forest school ethos. Trained forest school leaders help children to achieve and develop confidence in a woodland environment. The forest school setting is proving popular and has a waiting list. The nursery takes up to 16 children and offers full days and half-day sessions. They have a cosy Coach House on site and can gently introduce children to outdoor learning through stay and play sessions and Off Grid Kids outdoor play group, for children aged two to three.

The spokesperson for the nursery added: “Our nursery is small and personal, so if you find the size of other nurseries intimidating, then you will find Greenbank Woodland Play a refreshing change.” With the Scottish Government increasing the extension of free nursery hours to 1140 for every nursery aged child from August 2020, the outdoor nursery have highlighted that the principle of the scheme is that the “funding follows the child”, meaning that children from any local authority can access funded hours at the outdoor nursery. CALL OUT FOR TOP FIRMS ART SHOW FOR CHARITY It’s time to celebrate the achievements of local businesses as the East Renfrewshire Business Awards call for entries. Judges hope to find inspiring examples of businesses that make up the wealth of talent in the area. So, whether you are a sole trader running a successful business from home or a CEO of an international company, award organiser East Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce would like to hear from you. At the awards ceremony at Barrhead’s Dalmeny Park Hotel in June, eight gongs will be handed out to winners in categories including: Best New Product, Best Family Business and Best Home Based Business.

Laura Molloy, president of East Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said the awards are a fantastic chance to showcase “what is achievable in uncertain times by businesses who have the drive and ambition to succeed”. She added: “The unique mix of companies operating in the area, their partnerships and supporters, always combine to make this an exceptional event. I would urge businesses to submit an application and promote what they have achieved.” Councillor Tony Buchanan, leader of East Renfrewshire Council,

said: “This event provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate the success of our local business community.” Ahead of the deadline for submissions on March 18 at 5pm, award sponsors Business Gateway are running a free masterclass on March 3 to support business people with their applications. Held in Barrhead Foundry from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, the session is designed to “give businesses the best chance of success”. To book a place on the masterclass, go to www. bgateway.com/events (search “East Renfrewshire”). To enter the awards, visit www. eastrenchamber.org.uk/awards or email awards@entourageuk.com

A special anniversary art exhibition and sale takes place this month at Carmichael Hall, Eastwood Park. The event on Saturday March 14, from 10am and 4pm, marks the 40th year of Clarkston and District Christian Aid Committee. Both professional and amateur artists donate a third of their sales to the charity. There will be more than 300 original works of art. Many thousands of pounds have been donated over the years to Christian Aid, which supports people, irrespective of faith, at home and throughout the world. SCOTT’S ARCTIC ADVENTURE Arctic trekker and fund-raiser Scott McPhillimy has more than doubled his cash target for MS Society Scotland.

ANDREW WINS SPORTS AWARD A senior pupil at Williamwood High School has been honoured with a special sports award. Andrew Lappin, who is in S5, was named Glasgow & West of Scotland Young Sportsperson of the Year for 2019 for his achievements in judo. Glasgow's Sports Person of the Year Awards 2019 celebrate the people and organisations that have made a difference in sport in Glasgow over 12 months. Andrew was handed his accolade at a recent ceremony held at Glasgow City Chambers. A school spokesperson said: “Congratulations to Andrew for his award. It is an amazing achievement.”

Scott, 30, of Newton Mearns, spent three days taking part in MS Society’s Arctic Trek in Finland to raise money for the multiple sclerosis charity. The challenge included 28km on day one, 20km on day two and 18km on day three, with a finish at the Arctic Snow Hotel. The MS Society is a cause close to Scott’s heart after he was diagnosed with the condition in 2015. The trek involved battling heavy snow and wind chill, as well as coping with overnight camping. He said: “It snowed for most of the time I was there. This meant the conditions underfoot were soft which made walking challenging.

a hike on day two, which sapped the strength from my legs. “The wind chill was like a slap in the face and as you took your glove off to access something in your bag, within seconds your hand was numb. “Camping was also tough because it doesn’t come naturally to me.” But he was delighted to finish the challenge. He said: “At no point did I consider giving up. I had trained and prepared for over a year for this with lots of early rises, funny looks while dragging my tyre and no alcohol in 2019. “I was going to achieve this, even if I had to crawl over the finish line.” He added: “This is something I will always look back on as a oncein-a-lifetime

TAP YOUR WAY TO BETTER FITNESS

SCOTTISH FILM FESTIVAL FIRST

TAPfit, a new dance fitness programme launches in the area this month

A new style of exercise class has launched in Newton Mearns and Giffnock – and the first class is free. TAPfit is a dance fitness programme that uses “Feet Beats”, which slip over shoes or trainers, to create an instant tap shoe. The classes comprise a mixture of basic tap steps and aerobic dance, as well as utilising resistance arm toners. Dance teacher Rachel Ballard said: “TAPfit is great fun and fantastic for all fitness levels. It increases muscle power, flexibility, balance and toning, as well as burning lots of calories.” Rachel reports that the classes are sociable, too. She said: “I love the inclusiveness of TAPfit and it can be taught in a variety

of settings, such as to dementia friendly groups." Research reveals the benefits of TAPfit, including a physical therapy tool to aid co-ordination and mobility, as well as reducing cognitive decline. TAPfit takes place in Maxwell Mearns Castle Church Hall, Newton Mearns, Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and The Maccabi Centre, Giffnock, Saturdays 10.15am to 11.15am. A gentler class takes place at The Golf Academy, Newton Mearns, Tuesdays 1pm to 1.50pm. After the first free class it’s £5 for a drop-in session or £20 for a fiveclass booking. See www.dance-rs.com.

SWIM JOY AS POOL REOPENS What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: REACHING OUT FOR HELP...

Swimmers, both younger and older, are delighted that Eastwood Park swimming pool has reopened after a two-month closure. The popular swimming baths in Eastwood Park Leisure complex closed for “essential maintenance” in mid-December. Initially, it was meant to be reopening just three weeks later, but the pool remained closed for almost two months “due to unforeseen circumstances”. The reopening took place on February 10.

nearby pools at Barrhead Foundry and Neilston pool during the closure, are delighted the local baths is now operational. A council spokesman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience that this closure has caused but the safety and comfort of our customers are vital.”

According to East Renfrewshire Leisure Trust, which operates the council-owned 25-metre pool, the large filters that regulate the water were “significantly upgraded” during the work.

A spokesman from the Trust said: “We’re pleased the pool is open. We would like to apologise again for the inconvenience caused and thank all our customers for their patience.”

Regular Eastwood Pool swimmers, who travelled to

The swim school and lessons all returned as normal.

As has been recently highlighted, suicide sadly remains a significant risk in our communities. People continue to die as a result of feeling isolated, helpless and cornered, despite often appearing to maintain an outward appearance of coping with life, even looking successful. For many years it has been a taboo subject, leaving those behind with a sense of shame or guilt. People struggle to find the words to talk about it, with the result that the risks become magnified.

GPs are trained to talk about these difficult subjects, and offer help to those who may be considering suicide, or families and friends suffering from the after-effects which people carry with them for many years. There is no shame in talking about this and there are many people around who want to help. Often simply sharing worries and anxieties will start to lift people out of their dark thoughts, and begin a recovery. Speak to your doctor, nurse or phone the Samaritans or NHS24 if you need help. There will always be an answer.

RENTING A COMMERCIAL PROPERTY:

POINTS TO CONSIDER

• If property is not in good condition, insist on a Schedule of Conditions being drawn up. This will restrict your obligation at termination of the lease to leave the property (only) in the same condition as it was recorded in the Schedule at the outset.

If you are starting a new business or moving business premises, there are many issues to consider when renting a commercial property for that business including: • The precise location of the property and the length of the lease. These are crucial. For flexibility, seek a “break option” giving you the right to terminate the lease early. • Rent payable. Ask the landlord for a rent-free period or other incentive. Note the timing of any rent-review clause and the possible effect on your business. Note: you need to register your business for VAT to recover VAT on the rent paid. • Find out the level of business

rates payable. There may be a small rates exemption available. • If property is part of a tenement or set of industrial units, find out from the factors the level of recent service charges and if substantial future repairs are anticipated. Find out the cost of insuring the property and remember that you will also be paying for electricity, gas and water. • Consider obtaining a survey, particularly of an older property, and including the roof of a tenement if applicable.

Dallas McMillan has extensive experience of Help To Buy cases for new builds and are well placed to advise on and deal with First Home Fund purchases in our usual quick and efficient manner.

• Ensure the title deeds permit your proposed commercial use of the property and that all necessary certificates exist (eg Energy Performance Certificate, Electrical Compliance Certificate, Fire Risk Assessment). • If you plan to carry out alterations to the premises, consider drawing up early plans for approval at the outset by the landlords. There are many other factors to consider when renting a commercial property. Our experienced Commercial Property team headed by Forbes Leslie assist businesses of all sizes throughout Scotland. Please contact us if we can help you at all.

Planning the

y a D t s e i p p a H

Some people know exactly what sort of wedding they aim to have – may even have planned it for years – while others fret over details large and small as the Big Day draws ever closer. Will it be a “cast of thousands” big production at some splendid Scottish baronial pile, or an intimate affair for a dozen people? Registry office or local pub – or how about a floating wedding on board a paddle steamer? Is it going to be a church wedding, or one where a celebrant plays a leading role?

The only problem with the infinite variety of ways in which you can celebrate what should be the most important day of your life is the difficulty of making final decisions– from where to have the actual ceremony to where you choose to stage your reception (and of course dovetailing the whole procedure with, in most cases, a honeymoon break immediately afterwards).

It may sound tiresomely sexist in this day and age, but in Scottish culture organising a wedding does seem to be overwhelmingly a female thing, with the men confining their role in proceedings to the obligatory trips to dress hire shops for kilts or whatever other ensemble they manage to agree upon (but it’s usually the full Bonnie Prince

Charlie, even for people who never wear the kilt for any other kind of occasion). You can visit wedding shows, where specialists of every kind are there to offer services from flowers to place names on tables, from photography and video to hairdressing – or you can do it the bespoke way and choose every service you require from a list assembled, with great care, on the basis of personal recommendations from your own experience or from other couples.

of your life? Do you need a piper to enliven the proceedings? If so book early, because they don’t come “off the peg” and can be in hot demand at certain peak times of the year – particularly from Spring onwards. Much the same applies to whatever other musical entertainment you may decide to lay on afterwards. How about cuisine? Plated meal or buffet? Will there be a disco for the young folks later on and the option of something a bit more relaxed for the older set – and will

both families be happy with what you decide to choose? Some of the questions you need to answer are no-brainers you can solve in a jiffy, while others need to be discussed and solved with your partner on a case by case basis. Outdoor weddings in Scotland are “Russian roulette” at any time of year, but Spring showers may not be a problem if you’ve a great venue lined up with plenty indoors to keep everyone amused. Time is the one element you have to watch most carefully, because

while you may have a beautiful dress chosen and fitted, a reception booked, and all the rest of the logistics of getting bridesmaids sorted with dresses and food sorted to cater for special diets – and all the rest of it – may have to be signed and sealed by a specific date. However you manage things, be prepared to take advice but always ensure both of you approve every single important detail, and that way you should be guaranteed a truly happy day you will look back on with pleasure for the rest of your days.

FIND A TRUSTED TRADER

Legal Matters with Julie Millen from Millen Solicitors INJURIES This month: CRIMINAL COMPENSATION AUTHORITY

A new Trusted Trader scheme has been launched in East Renfrewshire recently in a bid to crack down on rogue tradesmen. A joint venture between Trading Standards and the council, Trusted Trader is an online list of reputable traders who have been scrutinised by trading standards and promise to charge fair prices and be transparent in quoting for any work. The site also allows people to review tradesmen, as well as read and comment on feedback from other householders. The Scotland-wide scheme has been launched in a bid to crack down on rogue builders operating in this area and beyond, with support from Police Scotland and Citizens Advice.

Paul Holland, manager of Trading Standards East Renfrewshire, said: “Our priority is protecting residents, many of whom are vulnerable and elderly, from doorstep criminals. He urged residents not to entertain cold callers. Instead, residents are encouraged to hire someone they trust or someone who has been recommended. There is a list of vetted tradespeople online at: www.trustedtrader.scot/ eastrenfrewshire and if you are a trader running a reputable business, and would like to join the trusted list, you can make contact via the website.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, originally set up in 1964, is a government agency offering compensation to victims of violent crime in the UK. The Authority’s office is in Glasgow’s financial services district, and over 300 staff are employed there. The Authority deals with around 40,000 applications every year paying out up to £200 million pounds to victims of crime. Applications require to be made within 2 years from the date of the injury. Time limits are only extended in exceptional circumstances and in the case applicants who are children. The injury sustained must have been caused by a crime of violence and the crime must be reported to the police before a claim is made.

CENTRAL TREE SERVICE

In 1996, a schedule or tariff of levels of compensation was set down by Parliament. The tariff lists more than 400 different types of injury each injury attracting a set level of compensation. There are 25 levels of compensation arranging from ÂŁ1000 to ÂŁ250,000. Most claims are dealt with without the need for a Tribunal Hearing. However, a Tribunal Hearing can be requested in the event of the refusal of an application or to challenge the tariff level applied. Information on the scheme can be found on the government website www.gov.uk

GOLFER SWINGS INTO SCHOOL STROLLER to play alongside the world’s top players. He began as a trainee professional at Cathcart Castle Golf Club in 1993 before going on to play in a number of PGA Scottish events.

However, after sustaining an injury, his professional golf career was cut short. That’s when the former St Ninian’s High School pupil opted for his career change. The golfer first worked as a pupil support assistant before going back into the classroom and gaining an HNC in Early Childhood Practice.

Paul, a former professional golfer, is looking forward to his new role as a child development officer

After a successful sports career, a professional golfer from East Renfrewshire has put down his clubs and swung into nursery teaching. Paul Morrison, who was a golf pro for 13 years, is now a child development officer at Isobel Mair Family Centre in Newton Mearns.

Newton Mearns, had always enjoyed the school environment and admits he had long been considering a second career as a teacher.

Having taught golf in primaries and secondaries, Paul, 44, of

Paul first learned to play golf at Eastwood Golf Club and went on

Paul is one of a number of people in East Renfrewshire to sit the qualification as part of the council scheme to offer almost double the amount of free childcare by August 2020. Paul, who studied his HNC at West College Scotland, said that working in additional support needs is very rewarding. He added: “It’s more than just providing learning we have real focus on providing our young people with skills for life.

STRIDERS RETURN

The Whitelee Stroller Striders return this month for the summer of weekly walks. The popular walking group, which launched in 2011, is for expectant and new parents with babies. The group has seen more than 500 parents and little ones enjoying the fresh air and access opportunities at the windfarm, near Eaglesham. The walk isn't too strenuous and it is led by a countryside ranger. The group meets at 10am at the visitor centre every Tuesday morning, come rain or shine (if you want to!). The first session is March 3. See www.eastrenfrewshire.gov. uk/whiteleestrollers.

“You can make a difference to parents’ lives, too, by providing children with simple life skills that helps families to be able to enjoy new experiences together.”

March 2020 | Senior Savvy

LYNX IN FOCUS AT SWT MEET-UP Senior Savvy A Scottish Wildlife Trust group is looking forward to a talk about the lynx this month. Clarkston and East Kilbride SWT will meet on March 16, from 7.30pm to 9pm, at Clarkston Halls to hear from speaker David Hetherington, a Scottish ecologist and author of the book, The Lynx and Us. David will tell the story of one of Europe's most secretive large carnivores and discuss the possibility of reintroducing the wild cat to Scotland. His talk will be illustrated with stunning photography by Laurent Geslin. The Eurasian lynx is native to Europe, Central Asian and Siberian forests. It is the third largest

with Tasnim Rehman

predator in Europe after the brown bear and the grey wolf.

This month: THE POWER OF TOUCH

Liz McTeague, from the SWT group, said: “The lynx is a very topical subject and we hope that as many people as possible will attend this month. The meeting is open to everyone.”

Touch is important for everyone; it is an essential part of well-being. From the moment we are born, a gentle touch calms us down and lets us know someone cares.

The group is run by volunteers and aims to support the work of the SWT by organising walks, talks and other events to encourage interest in wildlife. The event is free to attend, although the group welcomes donations. To find out more see: www. scottishwildlifet rust.org.uk/localgroup/clarkstonand-east-kilbride.

Some amazing benefits of Human Touch :

A lack of human touch has psychological and emotional consequences. Elderly living alone or in long-term care are amongst the most vulnerable, particularly those living with dementia. Most of the touch received is from CAREgivers carrying out personal care, although gentle in manner this can be associated with tasks and procedures.

• Faster recovery from illness and live longer • Fights stress induced illnesses • Balances nervous system • Relieves pain • Boosts immune system • Increase empathy and understanding • Provides non-verbal communication • Provided a strong display of love and support • Reduces anxiety, depression and agitated behaviour

The touch elders seek is informal, emotional, conveying warmth, concern, security, encouragement and comfort. Regular warm, genuine gentle touch can have a huge impact on the elderly.

Ways to harness the power of touch can be so simple – a hug, holding hands, rubbing lotion on dry hands and arms, a gentle stroke of the hand whilst escorting them can turn someone’s day around.

MENOPAUSE CAFÉ RETURNS The successful Menopause Café returns this month to The Market Place in The Avenue

IS THE WORD A classic film-themed event is being organised by a team of local students to raise funds for charity.

Organisers of a successful Menopause Café in East Renfrewshire are set to host another event this month. In November, The Market Place in The Avenue, Newton Mearns, staged the first café of its kind in the area for women of any age to come together to discuss the often-taboo subject of the menopause.

which are caused by significant and fluctuating hormone changes.

The menopause and perimenopause typically affect women aged early 40s to mid 50s, although not exclusively.

Francesca Mckay, The Market Place lead, said: “We knew that there is a need for more opportunities for people to talk about menopause, but we didn't realise that it would have such a big impact on those who came along.

The range of symptoms are numerous, including hot sweats, anxiety, insomnia, depression, dry skin, joint pain and migraines,

Now thanks to the success of the first gathering, another Menopause Café will take place at the same location on March 5, from 6pm to 8pm.

“Before it was even over, people wanted to know when the next event would be and they spoke about feeling much more positive.” As before, organisers are planning a fun and informal setting with no pre-set agenda. The Menopause Café is an opportunity for women and their partners, family and friends to chat, listen, share stories and learn from each other. Guest speakers are still to be confirmed. The Menopause Café is free to attend but it is ticketed. To book, call 0141 879 9555 or pop into the Market Place.

Grease is the Word will be held at Busby Bowling Club on March 27, from 7pm to 11.30pm. Guests can expect entertainment from a singing duo, Grease-inspired decorations, food, a quiz, a photo booth and a raffle. One of the students, Lauren Grant, of Busby, said: “The aim of the event, being organised as part of our HNC Event Management course, is to raise funds and awareness for the Mental Health Foundation.” Tickets cost £12 at retroeventsglasgow@ gmail.com. Mearns Bowling Club Celebrates 100 Years of Service to the Local Community Mearns Bowling Club was founded in 1920 and has provided 100 years of continuous sport and service to the people of Newton Mearns and beyond. The Club is located at the Old Cross on Ayr Road in Newton Mearns with a prominent position admired by many. It has remained a focal point of the area as the town has expanded exponentially from a few hundred homes to the many thousands of homes in 2020. The bowling club itself is a long-standing and active part of the community of Newton Mearns and it is quite an achievement to be celebrating its 100th anniversary. The Club has many extra activities planned for this special centenary year.

Honorary Centenary President John Cossar

The Club also provides facilities and a postal address for the Royal British Legion to maintain a presence for this important memorial organisation in Newton Mearns.

Life member Mr John Cossar has been appointed as Honorary Centenary President, the 89-year-old retired Scottish Power Executive has been associated with the Club since 1956 and his father, Bert Cossar, was President in 1960 with John following in his footsteps as President in 1980. John is proud to have been appointed as Honorary Centenary President and commented: “Mearns Bowling Club has been a great source of enjoyment, sporting challenge and, above all, community inclusion and fellowship for its members and their families and friends. In an ever-changing World, and a dramatically expanding Newton Mearns, it is good to know that the Bowling Club is still providing such a valuable service for the community.” All the members of Mearns Bowling Club are immensely proud of the community role that the Club has played over the decades, in addition to its many bowls successes. There have been a number of initiatives over the years to continually boost membership and to enhance the contribution that the Club makes to the community.

There is a lively social element associated with membership, including cabaret evenings, race nights, charity events, carpet bowls and a thriving Bridge Section and other events enjoyed by members and their families and friends. The Club and its facilities, including a licensed Bar, are available to accommodate private events including birthday parties, anniversary celebrations and other events marking special occasions. Of course, our core activity, playing bowls, is a game for all ages.

This Centenary Year will be marked officially on Saturday, 11th April, at 2pm. with a speech by Mr Cossar, his niece Mrs Gillian Robson delivering the first bowl, the traditional way to start a new bowls season, and the raising of the Club’s Centenary Flag. Everyone, including existing and potential members, will be made very welcome at this event.

“Ongoing initiatives include free membership to new members for the first year” Ongoing initiatives, such as the offer of free membership to new members for the first year continue to encourage playing members to the Club. There is no joining fee and membership is open to Ladies, Gents and young persons alike.

The Club’s Centenary celebrations will be supported by many dignitaries, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Col. Peter McCarthy and Mrs McCarthy, Provost of East Renfrewshire, Jim Fletcher, who is kindly hosting a Civic Reception for Club members on 16th April, SNP MP Ms Kirsten Oswald, MSP Jackson Carlaw, Leader of the Conservative & Unionist Party in Scotland, and officials from Bowls Associations, including Bowls Scotland, and a personal appearance by a World Bowls champion, Stewart Anderson.

GOODY FOODY VENTURE

MACMILLAN DROP-IN SESSIONS

MALE CHOIR TO ENTERTAIN

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Drop-in takes place every Friday in Clarkston. The sessions have trained volunteers with a friendly listening ear for anyone affected by cancer, including those with a cancer diagnosis, as well as family and friends. The free events take place from 10.30am to 2.30pm at Clarkston Library. A spokesperson said: “Our Macmillan area in the library offers a cosy, informal environment to talk over a cup of tea. “Our volunteers can also refer individuals to local and national services, including our own Move More physical activity programme, complementary therapies, financial advice or help for carers.” See www.ercultureandleisure.org/ macmillan

An East Renfrewshire mum has launched a new service to make it easier for busy families to grow their own food. “They get everything they need to start a vegetable patch in their garden, while being guided by a local friendly gardener, all ordered with a click of a button.”

Laura Molloy, from Giffnock, started Goody Foody Gardens last summer, piloting her plans with a group of local gardeners. She explained: “As the founder and mother to a brood of three, I share all the same concerns as most parents. I feel there is too much plastic packaging, too much screen time, not getting outdoors enough and concerns about giving kids a healthy diet.

Laura has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise £10,000, with the chance of an additional £5000 grant from RBS’s #BackherBusiness campaign.

“Goody Foody Gardens is a brand new service that makes it easy for busy families who would like to grow their own food, but don’t have a clue or the time to do it.

CARE HOME LEADS THE WAY WITH Family owned withRESEARCH family values DEMENTIA AND SIGHT LOSS

A Paisley care home is leading pioneering research into improving the care of people with dementia and sight loss. Jenny’s Well, in Hawkhead Road,Paisley is one of Scotland’s two specialist care homes for sight loss run by the charity Royal Blind. The 54-bedroom home opened in October 2017 and offers nursing care to older people with sight loss, including those with other medical needs. The home is equipped with lifeenhancing elements for older people with sight loss, including tactile signage, lighting which reduces glare, a sensory garden and onsite hairdressers and beauty treatment rooms.

Now Royal Blind has been awarded £20,000 for the project by the Life Changes Trust to research what activities in care homes people with sight loss and dementia find most rewarding, and how activities can be tailored to their needs. The team will work with residents to develop other activities that are suited to people with sight loss and dementia and share their findings with the wider care community. Morag Francis, Head of Care for Older People for Royal Blind, said:

“Sight loss and dementia both require tailored approaches to care to ensure people living with the conditions receive the support they need. "If couples, close relatives and friends wish to move in together, only one of them needs to meet the home’s sight loss criteria." Morag added: “I would encourage anyone who is concerned about a loved one who is an older person and has a vision impairment to get in touch with the team at Jenny’s Well and see how we can help them.” Find out more about Jenny’s Well at www.jennyswell.org or call 0800 024 8973.

The free event, called Share a Song and Sing Along, is a chance to join others to belt out some favourite tunes, from Elvis and Sinatra to old Scottish folk songs.

The choir was formed from the the Partick Male Voice Choir in 1925 and has some 40 active choristers, including First Tenor, Second Tenor, Baritone and (Second) Bass.
