A PRESENT FROM THE DOCTOR Thousands flocked to the Comic-Con capers staged in Balloch over past years – and now a hard-working local cause is set to benefit from a unique auction at just such an event. Everyone interested in charities which play an important role in West Dunbartonshire and central Scotland generally will know all about Robin House in Balloch, the facility run by Children’s Hospices Across Scotland – it also operates Rachel House in Kinross. Less people may know that one of its most ardent supporters is our own Peter Capaldi, the disgraceful Malcolm Tucker from In The Thick of It or, most popular of all, one of the best ever Dr Whos. He couldn’t make the event this year, but donated a one-off, personally illustrated script for an online charity auction to celebrate the return of Edinburgh’s Capital Sci-Fi Con this month. Bidding has just closed, and however much is raised all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland.

CLYDESIDE DOMESTICS HOMEHELP DOMESTIC SERVICES

The auction also included rare items autographed by fellow CHAS champion (and recent 2020 Golden Globe winner) Brian Cox, a fan portrait endorsed and signed by science fiction and fantasy legend Sylvester McCoy - and hard to find Star Wars memorabilia donated by collectors. At last year’s event Capaldi notably donated a full day of his time to raise money for the charity, belting out David Bowie classic Starman, and refusing to leave the building until he’d met the last fan. It raised over £62,000, taking the overall total which has gone directly to CHAS to £250,276 since 2016. Guests appearing at the 2020 edition included patron and Star Wars legend Angus MacInnes; Harry Potter’s David Bradle;, sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker; Game

“We are also indebted to the science fiction community and

particularly Keith Armour’s team at Capital Sci-Fi Con for everything they do to raise awareness and funds for CHAS throughout the year”. Given the roaring success of the previous Comic-Con events staged in Balloch, we hope Peter may beam down to some future sci-fi spectacular on the bonnie banks.

The term “Clyde built” has rightly become synonymous with the most reliable and efficient ships in the world – and the stretch from Dumbarton to Glasgow once seemed like one vast shipyard. Dumbarton played a historic role, particularly with the vessels linked to the famous Denny name, and while the glory days are gone the story of the famous yards and the magnificent ships they produced should never be forgotten. So it is entirely fitting that this month’s Lennox Heritage Society talk is devoted to those leviathans of yesteryear, in what promises to be a fascinating talk from speaker Harry Silvers (March 18). No lecture could encompass everything that could be said about Clyde shipbuilding, because it is a truly vast subject, but he will doubtless touch on some of the best-known of the Clyde vessels, such as the Queen Mary. It is a matter of real pride to record, meanwhile, that the Free Polish destroyer ORP Piorun (Thunderbolt) was built at John Brown’s yard in Clydebank.

In peace and war the ships built on the Clyde, large and small, were the benchmark others struggled to follow – and that magnificent legacy lives on.

WILDLIFE DAY OF FUN IN BALLOCH

Scottish Forestry is hosting a free event at Balloch Castle Country Park to celebrate World Wildlife Day on Sunday, March 1 from 12pm until 4pm. Free activities include conservation activities, face painting, arts and crafts, campfire and marshmallows, storytelling and, we’re promised, much more. It could be a great opportunity to get out and about in one of the area’s most beautiful spots at a time when the worst of the winter weather should hopefully have abated – but go prepared! The event will be based around Balloch Castle in the park and the closest entrance to the event is at Mollanbowie Road.

FOOD ISSUES ARE TO THE FORE You might not think areas such as Drymen and Balmaha have problems linked to “food poverty”, but a new initiative from Stirling Council lays that idea to rest.

It is all about improving access to good quality, healthy and sustainable food – often in areas where, without a car, some residents can struggle to find the sort of variety and average pricing most of us take for granted. Regeneration convener Councillor Chris Kane said: “Access to affordable, quality food is a basic human right that must be available to everyone in the Stirling area. “We now need to rise to the challenge along with our community partners to ensure we deliver on these ambitions.” A wide range of activities have been planned, including healthy eating and sustainable food consumption campaigns, and the rapid referral to hardship funds and emergency food aid for those in urgent need. Within the plan there’s also an implicit determination to provide

more healthy eating options in nurseries, schools, hospitals, care homes and other workplaces. The scheme is already off to an encouraging start with the launch of a chef apprentice venture in local primary schools, which brings kids into direct (and fun) contact with the people who run the school kitchen – making bread, and preparing sandwiches and salads.

BUILDING A FUTURE FOR YOUTHS Youth support charity Includem will next month launch a new project in West Dunbartonshire with the aim of cutting the level of youth crime in the area. Over the next three years their ADAPT for Cashback project will work with 200 young people currently “on the edge of criminality” to help them develop positive patterns of behaviour. The scheme is being funded through a £807k grant from the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme, which takes money seized from criminals under proceeds of crime laws and invests them in projects to support young people. The scheme will provide an early intervention, one-to-one support service for 10-15 year olds at risk of offending. Chief executive Martin Dorchester said: “West

Dunbartonshire Integrated Children's Services Plan has identified a need to provide more support to vulnerable young people and families to stop them drifting into criminality. “We are delighted that we will soon be helping to transform young lives in the area and building safer communities at the same time.” Includem works with young people across the country who are experiencing challenges dealing with day-to-day living.

The charity says it has a proven track record in helping to reduce crime rates, for example in Glasgow they worked with Police Scotland’s Violence Reduction Unit to target knife crime among local gangs. Over a two-year period, evidence showed that offending behaviour reduced both in severity and volume. “We believe that no young person is ever beyond help”, said Martin. “Each young person will be supported to develop their own individually tailored plan to meet their particular needs. By changing the behaviour that puts them at risk of making bad decisions we will work with them to ensure they take a more positive life path.”

SCOTLAND’S FIRST AUTISM SHOW Scotland's first ever expo for people & families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been announced for 3 and 4 April 2020.

Canine Home Boarding

Daisy’s Den

Set to be held in Glasgow's Crowne Plaza, the event has been organised by parents who run a local charity, the Vale of Leven Autism and Asperger’s Forum (VOLAAF). Scotland's Autism Show will feature exhibitors, expert talks and workshops, for people with autism, their families, friends and professionals. This is a free event and offers the chance to access information, support, guidance, tools and education. VOLAAF is based in the West of Scotland and provides support to families pre- and post-diagnosis, who have children affected by ASD. Everyone involved with the charity is a parent or carer of children with autism. The charity is ran entirely by volunteers.

Suzanne Gillies, chairperson of VOLAAF said: ”Our charity was founded because there is very little practical help or support extended to families. This is where we step in - we provide a safe place for children to come and be themselves, as well as support groups for parents and family members. ”With many children in Scotland having an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, we were

amazed that there has never been an event where parents, carers and professionals could access support and information under one roof. We decided to take up the challenge and launch our own. We have exhibitors, speakers and workshops booked in so we hope that our show, which is free to attend, will help as many people as possible.” Scotland's Autism Show will run on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th April, from 9am – 6pm at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow. To register for Scotland's Autism Show, please visit www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/scotlands-autism-showtickets-89217749691. DELVING INTO THE FAMILY PAST There’s still time – just – to take advantage of a series of genealogy sessions at Dumbarton Library Heritage Centre in Strathleven Place, which run (10am to 12.30pm) until Friday, March 6. Described as Ancestry Taster Sessions the idea is to show people how to use what could be seen as a groundbreaking online way of charting a course through the millions of family history records which can now be accessed at the click of a mouse. Until fairly recently the whole subject of family history research was fairly specialised, needing considerable expertise and a great deal of rummaging in dusty box files – but that has changed beyond recognition.

Handyman

Many people can trace their family history over the course of several generations, but when

the data available is channelled correctly it can sometimes be possible to explore the past far more thoroughly – perhaps turning up some real surprise stories. While of great interest to many local families this aspect of heritage may also prove immensely useful to people from North America –or indeed from Ireland – trying to find out more about their roots, or, in the case of Irish people, their descendants. For all sorts of reasons this particular heritage facility should prove extremely popular and well-used in years to come.

RSPB Loch Lomond at High Wards Farm, Gartocharn, will be the scene of one of the area’s first Easter fun activities on the weekend of April 11 and 12 (10.30am to 3.30pm), when along with the inevitable Easter egg hunt there will also be springtime adventures and nature crafts to enjoy. The day involves a fair bit of off-path exploration, and – most people will know this – wellies or other sensible footwear are advised. You can drop in any time during the session, and no booking is necessary – cost is £5 per child, or £4 for RSPB members.

There’s a timely hint of artistic spring in the air next month, with the arrival of The National Theatre of Scotland in West Dunbartonshire – and with it a fascinating drama production. With its Scottish setting, it could easily be the plot of some new tartan noir masterpiece by top crime fiction writer Liam McIlvanney, but part of the lasting allure of Ibsen’s work is that his tale could be set almost anywhere that fits the general In a once great Scottish town (and bill. you can take your pick from half a dozen assorted likely contenders) Wherever the action takes place, the same dynamic of greed and a massive redevelopment project corruption in broadly comparable promises to bring money, jobs and new prospects to its forgotten population. “The Enemy” is described as a radical re-imagining of the classic Henrik Ibsen play about truth, power and deception from Kieran Hurley, award-winning playwright and screenwriter of the critically acclaimed Scottish indie film Beats.

Sounds great, and a shot in the arm for the local economy, but when Dr Kirsten Stockmann discovers a dangerous secret she realises she must bring the truth to light – no matter the cost.

circumstances can be witnessed in every modern society – although admittedly in this particular case the dark web of malfeasance which permeates the plot is in a class of its own. This version is described as a provocative and timely drama about corruption, politics and the media featuring a brooding original soundtrack and live video “a uniquely Scottish take on Henrik Ibsen’s timeless work”. The play takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday April 28 and 29 in Clydebank Town Hall, at 7.30pm. Full booking details had still to be published as this issue went to press, but will be available now at www.nationaltheatrescotland. com/production/the-enemy.

BALMAHA ‘OPENS’ FOR EASTER The National Park is set to invest £135,000 to upgrade visitor facilities in the busy East Loch Lomond tourist destination of Balmaha this spring. The upgrade – bringing some very welcome new facilities – is thanks to a successful bid to rural tourism infrastructure funds, and follows recently completed projects at Luss, Tarbet and Inveruglas. These are places whose popularity during the main tourism season had outstripped the facilities needed to cope with a deluge of people, and which were clearly on the “to do” list as soon as the requisite funds could be sourced. At Balmaha visitors will now be able to look forward to fully modernised toilets, and the spectacle of over-flowing bins will

be ended with the arrival of new solar-powered smart bins. These send alerts when they are nearing capacity, which will help to lessen the carbon footprint by reducing the number of unnecessary journeys made for maintenance visits. It may sound like overkill for a simple bin, but anyone who has seen the hideous sight of overfilled conventional bins will appreciate the wisdom of adopting new technology for rubbish disposal. National Park chief executive Gordon Watson said: “East Loch Lomond is one of the most popular

visitor destinations in the National Park. It is an important tourism hub that attracts many thousands of visitors each year. “We know that the provision of things like high quality toilets and bins can make a real difference to a visitor’s experience.

“We are pleased to be investing in our facilities to ensure they are sustainable for the long term and continue to match the standard expected of Scotland’s first National Park.” The visitor centre at Balmaha closed down last month, and will stay closed until the end of this month – the idea being to finish the upgrade work in the quiet season ahead of a reopening in time for the busy visitor season at Easter.

NEW HONOUR FOR WHISKY FIRM Late News Loch Lomond Whiskies (“the Official Spirit of The Open”) has added The PGA to its list of international partners. It is a prestigious honour which means the local firm will be the title sponsor of the Scottish PGA Championship. The three-year deal will ensure PGA members and amateur golfers will all have the opportunity to explore the full range of award-winning single malts created at the Loch Lomond Whiskies distillery in Alexandria, which can trace its roots back to the early 1800’s. One of the initiatives of the new partnership will see Loch Lomond Whiskies work with the PGA to sponsor monthly medals at many golf clubs across the UK and Ireland, giving members the chance to win prizes, including tickets to The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in 2021. This new agreement further

builds on Loch Lomond Whiskies’ existing sponsorships of The Open and Women’s British Open, and ambassador relationships with golf icons Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke and Cristie Kerr. Chief executive Colin Matthews, said: “Agreeing this new partnership with The PGA gives us great satisfaction and highlights the continued development of our brand within golf and amongst golfers across the world over the past two years.

brand that has shown a new and innovative way of approaching golf sponsorship in recent years. “This partnership will introduce our network to the range of Loch Lomond Whiskies and will find new and exciting ways to reward golfers in the UK and Ireland.” A full programme of promotions will be announced throughout 2020.

“The PGA is a wellrespected body amongst all golfers, and we are excited about the prospect of working with them to further develop our awardwinning brands over the next few years.”

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: REACHING OUT FOR HELP...

Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye condition which is caused by pressure causing damage to the optic nerve. This nerve is located at the back of the eye and is responsible for taking all the information from the eye to the brain. While anyone can develop Glaucoma, the people most at risk are; • Aged over 40

• Very short sighted

• Of African or Caribbean origin

• Closely related to someone with Glaucoma

With Glaucoma the damage is permanent and painless. Progression is slow and usually in one eye, allowing the other eye to compensate. A variety of simple tests can detect the condition in its early stages:

• Pressure test

• Visual field checks

• Optic nerve assessment and comparison If any abnormalities are found the tests will usually be repeated and then onward referral to the hospital eye service for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment. Treatment is usually via eye drops. The best way to try and prevent Glaucoma causing you any visual problems is to attend your optometrist for routine eye checks.

As has been recently highlighted, suicide sadly remains a significant risk in our communities. People continue to die as a result of feeling isolated, helpless and cornered, despite often appearing to maintain an outward appearance of coping with life, even looking successful. For many years it has been a taboo subject, leaving those behind with a sense of shame or guilt. People struggle to find the words to talk about it, with the result that the risks become magnified.

GPs are trained to talk about these difficult subjects, and offer help to those who may be considering suicide, or families and friends suffering from the after-effects which people carry with them for many years. There is no shame in talking about this and there are many people around who want to help. Often simply sharing worries and anxieties will start to lift people out of their dark thoughts, and begin a recovery. Speak to your doctor, nurse or phone the Samaritans or NHS24 if you need help. There will always be an answer.

JOIN THE RUN FUN IN THE PARK! If you haven’t yet taken part in one of the new weekly parkrun events staged in Levengrove Park this month could be the ideal chance to find out more – perhaps particularly if you are female. Of course these events are not just for women, but as it’s International Women’s Day on March 8 – and there are Park Runs across the world on March 7 to celebrate the fact – it’s an obvious focus for what could optimistically be seen as the beginning of the spring season. Parkrun is a global movement providing a free, weekly, timed 5K for walkers and runners in local parks all around the world. The concept is simple: turn up every Saturday morning and walk, jog or run. It doesn’t matter how fast you go or what you’re wearing - what matters is taking part.

welcome regardless of age, pace or ability. The event is family-friendly and dog-friendly too. “It’s also as much about the social side of things and community spirit as it is about the activity, which is just as important to people’s physical health and wellbeing.“ The parkrun route takes in three laps of Levengrove Park, including views of Dumbarton Castle and the River Clyde.

Volunteers are on hand to guide and cheer on runners and walkers along the route which ends handily close to the Pavillion Café for a post-event coffee and catch up. To find out more about Levengrove parkrun follow the event’s Facebook page www.facebook. com/levengroveparkrun. You can also find out more about parkrun and register to take part at www.parkrun.org.uk/register.

Planning the

Happiest Day of your life? Some people know exactly what sort of wedding they aim to have – may even have planned it for years – while others fret over details large and small as the Big Day draws ever closer.

Wedding Celebrant Celebrate your special day in your own way Helping to make your wedding dreams come true

Will it be a “cast of thousands” big production at some splendid Scottish baronial pile, or an intimate affair for a dozen people? Registry office or local pub – or how about a floating wedding on board a paddle steamer? Is it going to be a church wedding, or one where a celebrant plays a leading role? The only problem with the infinite variety of ways in which you can celebrate what should be the most important day of your life is the difficulty of making final decisions– from where to have the actual ceremony to where you choose to stage your reception (and of course

dovetailing the whole procedure with, in most cases, a honeymoon break immediately afterwards). It may sound tiresomely sexist in this day and age, but in Scottish culture organising a wedding does seem to be overwhelmingly a female thing, with the men confining their role in proceedings to the obligatory trips to dress hire shops for kilts or whatever other ensemble they manage to agree upon (but it’s usually the full Bonnie Prince Charlie, even for people who never wear the kilt for any other kind of occasion). You can visit wedding shows, where specialists of every kind are there to

offer services from flowers to place names on tables, from photography and video to hairdressing – or you can do it the bespoke way and choose every service you require from a list assembled, with great care, on the basis of personal recommendations from your own experience or from other couples. Do you need a piper to enliven the proceedings? If so book early, because they don’t come “off the peg” and can be in hot demand at certain peak times of the year – particularly from Spring onwards. Much the same applies to whatever other musical entertainment you may decide to lay on afterwards.

How about cuisine? Plated meal or buffet? Will there be a disco for the young folks later on and the option of something a bit more relaxed for the older set – and will both families be happy with what you decide to choose? Some of the questions you need to answer are no-brainers you can solve in a jiffy, while others need to be discussed and solved with your partner on a case by case basis. Outdoor weddings in Scotland are “Russian roulette” at any time of year, but Spring showers may not be a problem if you’ve a great venue lined up with plenty indoors to keep everyone amused.

Time is the one element you have to watch most carefully, because while you may have a beautiful dress chosen and fitted, a reception booked, and all the rest of the logistics of getting bridesmaids sorted with dresses and food sorted to cater for special diets – and all the rest of it – may have to be signed and sealed by a specific date. However you manage things, be prepared to take advice but always ensure both of you approve every single important detail, and that way you should be guaranteed a truly happy day you will look back on with pleasure for the rest of your days.

There are many occasions when people take ill or have an injury, and immediate attention could be critical for the unwell or injured person. This course on Thursday, March 5 (9.30am to 4.30pm) covers what action to take in an emergency, responsibilities and reporting, recovery position, CPR, controlling bleeding, choking, minor burns, basic hygiene, seizures and shock – all meeting the legal requirements of life saving skills that are relevant for the workplace. The venue is WDCVS, Arcadia Business Centre, Miller Lane, Clydebank, and the cost is £45 for voluntary organisations with no staff, £10 more for those which do have staff, and £60 for private organisations.

KIDS SECTION

It is available to people over the age of sixteen, but also importantly, to those under sixteen who require it and are capable of providing instructions to a solicitor. There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility depending on any savings you may have and also your weekly disposable income. The level of your weekly

disposable income may result in funding being made available but with a contribution also payable by you. There are certain state benefits which will automatically qualify an applicant for Legal Aid. Interestingly, SLAB indicate that 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. Although this is likely to be with a contribution. However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. It is always worthwhile asking your solicitor for further advice regarding your own particular set of circumstances and whether you would qualify for Legal Aid.

WEDDING MUST BE ABOUT YOU! BURGH DATE FOR CELTIC MUSIC A major music event coming to Dumbarton’s Denny Civic Theatre on May 3 has an overtly religious theme, but sounds the sort of show capable of appealing to all denominations. The evening (starts 7.30pm) promises to be a show stopper, blending bagpipes, whistles and fiddles with both traditional and contemporary Christian worship music. It is implicitly meant for everyone, and the ensemble is reckoned to comprise some of Scotland’s most talented folk musicians. We’re told: “Their mission is to combine their working life as professional musicians with their deep love of Jesus and their passion to share God’s love through their music”. The band is a collective of Scottish musicians from many different backgrounds and styles including, Steph Macleod, vocals/guitar; Naomi Stirrat, vocals; Mhairi

Marwick, fiddle; Scott Wood, pipes/whistle; Chris Amer, electric guitar; Gus Stirrat, bass; and Ifedade Thomas, drums. Celtic Worship first performed during Celtic Connections at Adelaide Baptist Church in 2017, and since then they have performed all over Scotland, Norway and Sweden. After capturing over a million views on their online videos, their much anticipated debut album Homeward was released in February 2019.

The West Dunbartonshire Registrars ceremony room at their Dumbarton office has been beautifully refurbished and is a sound choice for any wedding. Not only can Registrars now perform your ceremony virtually anywhere you like – Function Suites, Hotels, your own home, or some treasured local beauty spot – it can be personalised as much as you want.

the crucial legal formalities but of ensuring the couple enjoy the occasion as one they will look back upon as the high point of that most important day of their lives.

Once upon a time the official tying of the knot could be an uninspiring, rather dull affair, more like some tedious office procedure than a formal acknowledgment of a joyful lifetime commitment.

Lynn provides the example of a couple who had their rings brought in by a barn owl to illustrate just how individualistic a Registrar's wedding can be. It’s your day and West Dunbartonshire Registrars will make every effort to ensure it is truly unique and special.

Nowadays, as Senior Registrar Lynn Houston explains, a Registrar's Ceremony can be truly special – with the aim not just of observing

Dumbarton Academy has become the first local school to receive a national award celebrating the way it goes about looking after its pupils. The National Nurturing School Award is granted to schools who have implemented an exemplary nurturing culture to support all of their youngsters. To achieve the title, Dumbarton Academy staff focused on improving their knowledge of the emotional needs of learners and the impact of their early childhood experiences, as part of a programme carried out over three years. The result is said to have led to updated ways of trying to ensure the health and wellbeing – in the broadest sense – of all pupils, and the school has now been commended for making an outstanding contribution to building positive relationships with pupils and the school community.

Head teacher, Alison Boyles said of the Academy’s unique success: “I am delighted that Dumbarton Academy is the first school in West Dunbartonshire to be given this accolade, it is wonderful to see the amazing work going on in our school being recognised. “When I joined Dumbarton Academy recently, it was obvious to see the focus on providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our pupils and supporting their health and wellbeing. “That focus continues, and it is our top priority to provide every

child with every opportunity to thrive in our school.” Education convener Councillor Karen Conaghan said; “It is fantastic to see schools in West Dunbartonshire going above and beyond to ensure our pupils’ wellbeing is a priority while they are learning. “High School is a really important time for young people, and it is vital that we do all we can to provide them with not only with academic opportunities, but also equip them with social skills like confidence and self belief which together will ensure they have the right tools to succeed in their future.”

HONOUR FOR DUMBARTON ROTARIAN IS HARRY NOW A addition, Calum was the club president in 2003-04, he has also convened the four main committees within the club which includes Membership, International, Youth Activities and the Community and Vocational committee. Calum said “I am delighted and extremely surprised to receive this honour from not only Rotary International but all my fellow Rotarian’s in the Rotary Club of Dumbarton. Calum Macdonald receives The Paul Harris Fellowship Award

The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is one of the highest honours Rotary can bestow upon a person. It is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions and is a way of expressing Rotary’s appreciation for substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programmes. It is named after the Rotary’s founder, a Chicago lawyer, who started the organisation with three business associates in 1905. At Dumbarton Castle recently, Calum Macdonald who has been a member of the Rotary Club of

Dumbarton since March 1995 was awarded this prestigious honour in recognition of the work he had done for the club over many years. For the last 13 years, Calum has been Club Secretary, a position that he has carried out with great diligence, commitment and conviction, keeping the club informed about Rotary or club matters and looking after the general administration of the club. In

William Wilkie the current President of the club commented on Calum’s award. ”As a Club we are delighted that Rotary International (Great Britain & Northern Ireland) has recognised the considerable work that Calum has done for Rotary and is a very worthy recipient and ambassador of this award by his fellow Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Dumbarton.”

SONS SUPPORTER? The chances of Harry and Meghan turning up at the Dumbarton Festival this summer have receded beyond “unlikely” to “extremely unlikely”. Given the seismic news that the couple aim to do their own thing on the other side of the Pond - but the Earl of Dumbarton, as Harry is styled, now has at least one item authentic to the area beyond his honorific – a Dumbarton FC scarf, courtesy of the club. We’ll be watching international news broadcasts very closely to see whether he wears it.

If you wish to find out more about what the Rotary Club of Dumbarton does, you can log on to our website at www.rotaryribi.org/dumbarton or onto our Face book page at www. facebook.com/dumbarton.

CARE HOME LEADS THE WAY WITH HYPNOTIC ATTRACTION DEMENTIA AND SIGHT LOSS RESEARCH AT THE DENNY homes people with sight loss and dementia find most rewarding, and how activities can be tailored to their needs. The team will work with residents to develop other activities that are suited to people with sight loss and dementia and share their findings with the wider care community. Morag Francis, Head of Care for Older People for Royal Blind, said: “Sight loss and dementia both require tailored approaches to care to ensure people living with the conditions receive the support they need.

A Paisley care home is leading pioneering research into improving the care of people with dementia and sight loss. Jenny’s Well, in Hawkhead Road,Paisley is one of Scotland’s two specialist care homes for sight loss run by the charity Royal Blind. The 54-bedroom home opened in October 2017 and offers nursing care to older people with sight loss, including those with other medical needs. The home is equipped with life-

CHARITY BOOST FROM MORRISONS TEAM

DISMAY AT CLOSURE OF BRIDGE The bridge on the A811 in Balloch is closed for a whopping six months of repairs – but with a period of remission during summer.

BUSINESS GROUP SIGNS UP DUMBUCK Napoleon Bonaparte was busily trying to invade Egypt in the year Dumbuck Country House Hotel was originally built, and it’s not only still going strong but also thoroughly involved with local business life.

Road will be closed on the A811 in Balloch

Clic Sargent is nearly £400 better off this month, thanks to a five-hour cycle stint carried out by Morrisons volunteers on Dumbarton High Street, in association with Energie Fitness.

The hotel was a new signing for Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce from the beginning of 2020, whose members will no doubt be paying plenty of visits to its facilities in the busy months ahead.

A great result for a simple idea which involved plenty of strenuous exercise and drew great support from local people.

The listed building has 19 suites and bedrooms as well as its Rock Bar and The Dram and Gander Restaurant.

The team have seen just what Clic Sargent manages to achieve on behalf of the children who need their help most, and are pleased their effort turned out to be thoroughly worthwhile.

Check out the Chamber’s Facebook page for regular updates about all its many and varied activities.

The work, which is estimated will cost £3.6million, is likely to cause traffic snags in the run-up to the busiest time of the year, and spell problems for many people this month and beyond. The council has apologised for the inconvenience, and says it is trying hard to keep disruption to a minimum, but unsurprisingly the news has been greeted with fury by many of the bridge’s most regular users. It’s been pointed out that diversion routes are via A-class roads, which theoretically can soak up the expected surge in traffic, but few seem convinced this will ameliorate the problem

to any great extent – phrases such as “traffic mayhem” are common currency. The repairs scheme was originally supposed to have started last autumn, meaning the bridge would have reopened next month, but delays made this impractical – and work carried out during the winter would inevitably have brought its own weather-related delays. By the time this issue appears it should become apparent whether traffic management plans are working – or whether, as many motorists fear, this project will be the 2020 local version of A Bridge Too Far.
