abor Day has come and gone, summer is officially over in our eyes. This time of year happens to be my favorite, the weather is undoubtedly (in my mind) the most pleasurable and the events – like Oktoberfests and harvest festivals – are always a good time! It’s also a transitioning period for everyone, especially parents. The planning of 12hour days to keep the kids occupied is over. Late summer and fall are the perfect back drop to shop, stroll and unwind with your friends and family, and we have compiled some of the more interesting events around Monmouth County on pages 44 and 46 of this issue.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I urge everyone to go gold for September – whether wrapping a gold bow around a tree in your front yard or as simple as making your social media profile picture a gold ribbon. Times Square has even agreed to go gold, and One World Trade is also doing the same. Every year since that fateful Tuesday morning in 2001, we remember those who perished on September 11th. This year marks the 13th anniversary, Monmouth County lost many friends that day, and I hope and pray for peace and healing for those families and friends that lost loved ones.

We must always remember,

Colts Neck Rockfest Back for 7th Year! Free Concert for Locals Featuring Area Bands

C

olts Neck Rockfest 2014 is packed with talented local musicians and admission is free! Head over to Bucks Mill Park, Bucks Mill Road on September 20, 2014 and enjoy this annual event which runs from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Founder of the event Steve Warendorf started Colts Neck Rockfest in late August of 2008. “I had the idea to have a little free concert with a few musical acts at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. My point was always to utilize the beautiful spaces we have available in town,” said Warendorf. In 2008, the musical acts were the Moroccan Sheepherders, Bullet Bob and the Colts, as well as a few acoustic artists. “It was basically a backyard barbecue held at the park. There were probably 30 people in attendance. It’s interesting to note that this was the Moroccan Sheepherders’ very first NJ cover music gig, as we were an original act from 1996 until then,” added Warendorf, who is a member of this band. Warendorf said he enjoys putting together a couple of events throughout the year, sometimes raising money for charities. “With Rockfest, just being able to break even and be able to put smiles on people’s faces, musicians and event goers alike, while utilizing the great park that we have available as Colts Neck residents is great. The young bands have a great place to bring their friends and families to see them play, while also getting new exposure. As a musician and the event founder, I also get a chance to play during the day in a couple of the acts I am involved with.” Warendorf is currently the guitarist for the Moroccan Sheepherders, Carnival Dogs, The Working Men – a Rush Tribute

14

Band, and the SMA Project. Several of these are playing at Rockfest this year. Steve Warendorf and his wife Michelle grew up in Colts Neck and have lived

there for more than 40 years. Other than a few years in Red Bank and a short stint in Jersey City, he professes to definitely be a “townie.” The Warendorfs have two children, Robbie, 18, and Madeleine, 15. Madeleine will be playing at Rockfest with her group, “Three Little Birds.” Colts Neck Rockfest has changed quite a bit since its first concert in 2008. The start and end times have increased to allow more bands to perform. And now there are varied musical acts ranging from Reggae to Latin to Classic Rock to Original music. Several vendors selling hand crafted goods and services, as well as a few food vendors will also be on hand. “Throughout its six-year existence, the event has always pleased both the young and old,” said Warendorf.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

In addition to the seasoned musical acts, every year young bands and acoustic acts are welcomed to play. Since Rockfest 2009, this has always been an important part of the day, said Warendorf. “Young people seldom get places to play so this is a good way for them to be seen and heard. In addition to more musical acts and vendors over the years, in 2012 we had our first bonfire at the event! And one thing that we will always try to keep constant is the notion of this still staying a local, free, community event. Most of the bands help out in some way, from helping with parking to set up to clean up.” Today, there is a team of people who help out with different aspects of Rockfest - from vendor management to bonfire setup and cleanup to parking to general setup and cleanup. They include Michelle Warendorf, Martha Leonhart, Glenn Taglieri, Joe Bongiovi, Jack Lind, Larry Duffy, Rob DeCarolis, Ralph Somma, Alan Manzo and many more. Steve added that for the past three years, Sakoutis Brothers Disposal has donated a flatbed truck for them to use as our main stage. “It’s a no-brainer having Rockfest in Colts Neck. It’s a beautiful park with grills and a perfect space for the bands to play. The biggest change from last year will be that the Colts Neck Business Association is supporting the event. CHANGE YOUR BODY

In Just 55 Minutes A Week!

B

ecoming physically active is one of the most important steps someone can take to improve their long-term health and quality of life. While 150-minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity is the most beneficial across all spectrums, some physical activity is better than none; especially for sedentary individuals who are just beginning to incorporate exercise into their daily or weekly routine. For this reason, Meridian Fitness & Wellness has launched a revolutionary new small group exercise program which gets participants to engage in just 55 minutes of physical activity per week: Prep55. So, what is Prep55? According to Erin Walsh, Personal Training Director at Meridian Fitness & Wellness in Hazlet, Prep55 stands for Physical Readiness Exercise Program. “Prep55 is a beginner or novice program that focuses on foundational exercises, proper mechanics and lifting techniques for safe and effective workouts. The program is comprised of two 25-minute small group exercise sessions each week, for 8 weeks. In addition, each participant receives personalized nutrition counseling and fitness evaluations at the beginning and end of the program.” Is it really possible to improve your fitness level in just 55 minutes per week? The experts at Meridian Fitness & Wellness say, YES! “This program was professionally developed to introduce

effective exercise habits, support healthy dietary changes and educate participants about creating sustainable lifestyle changes,” says Erin. “Together, these things can make a profound difference in people’s health and fitness…not to mention how they feel about themselves.” How does Prep55 work? Often times novice fitness enthusiasts become complacent in their exercise routines

creating fitness plateaus and reducing motivation to continue exercising. Prep55 focuses on changing those routines by building on fundamental exercises. As the participant slowly progresses and becomes more proficient in the movements, they will notice considerable gains in both cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Is Prep55 right for me? Prep55 is designed to be effective for all participants regardless of age or current fitness level. Giordano, who spearheaded the initial launch of the program this past June, says that one of the benefits of

PROVIDED BY JULIANNE DODS, VP MERIDIAN FITNESS & WELLNESS

the Prep55 program is the personalized attention and support given to each participant in a fun a motivational environment. “Anyone can succeed with Prep55,” says Marie Hayes who, along with her son, graduated from the pilot class. “Even though the sessions are only 25 minutes, you accomplish and learn so much. Prep55 acclimates you to fundamental exercises and gives you the knowledge you need to change your life.” “If it wasn’t for Prep55, my son and I would not have achieved our goals. Together, we are more conscious of our food choices and making active lifestyle changes that are easy to implement and maintain.” Marie has continued to explore other Small Group classes, while her son, Lloyd, now meets with a trainer one-on-one. “Prep55 made such a tremendous impact on both of our lives,” says Lloyd. “I was not in the best condition when I began the program, but Prep55 starts each participant off at a level and pace that is comfortable and slowly progresses you into more challenging workouts that aren’t intimidating.” How do I get started? The cost to enroll in Prep55 is just $79 per person… less than $5 per session. It is open to Meridian Fitness & Wellness members and non-members. Classes are forming now and kick off September 22, 2014. Space is limited, so register now by calling 732.335.4200!

Glide In Style Come Glide With Us The Segway® Personal Transport (PT)* has arrived!

You never know what you will find at Becker Hardware in Colts Neck! The surprising new addition is The Segway Personal Transport and it is definitely worth a visit to meet with Jeff Becker, who is happy to explain the benefits and offer a demonstration. There are many misconceptions about The Segway. It is not an oversized scooter and it does not depend on rolling to get around. Instead, it is self- balancing, it detects the change in the rider’s stance and adjusts the speed for the rider. The shifting weight of the rider moves The Segway forward and back at a speed up to 12.5 mph and it has a handle bar for turns. Another advantage is the green technology, using battery power that is rechargeable at home. Jeff also demonstrated the InfoKey which not only powers The Segway, but has a security feature, trip gauge and battery monitor. Jeff explained that The Segway fits various lifestyles. In addition to enjoying trails or motoring around for chores or sightseeing, he points out, “Imagine the ease in over-seeing a farm or other large property.” There are “regular” models and ones which work off road. The Segway is available in many styles, including camouflage. Riders must be 16 years or older and a short training session at Becker Hardware is provided with the purchase. Jeff was pleased to be selected by Segway Inc. as the authorized dealer for Central and Southern New Jersey. Go to Becker Hardware for low key, pleasant personal service and be the first on your block to embrace this innovative and fun way to get around.

SEPTEMBER UPDATE The CNBA is a proud and continued supporter of Operation Provide Comfort, a non-profit organization developed to support NJ Shore communities still suffering from Super Storm Sandy. On August 23, 2014, the CNBA sponsored Colts Neck’s own Jacquie Lee in concert benefitting Union Beach for an unforgettable event at Brookdale Community College. The “Two Towns-One Voice-One Mission” concert at the Robert J. Collins Arena was buzzing with energy, excitement and smiles as we watched one of our own become a star before our eyes. Like a pro, Ms. Lee commanded and entertained the large crowd – all for a great cause. 100% of the proceeds raised went directly to residents of Union Beach through the group Operation Provide Comfort, which is headed by former Marine and Colts Neck resident Jim Sfayer. Each month at the CNBA General Meeting, a guest speaker informs the filled room with items and topics relevant and interesting to individuals as well as businesses large and small. This month’s speaker was Rich Lee, or as he introduced himself “Jacquie’s Dad”. Rich shared stories about the challenges and excitements of fame and “life on the road with Momma Lee” - watching his daughter grow and the amazing support she and his family received as she hit the TV screen every week. Rich tried to explain how proud as a parent it is to see your child be happy and receive so much love from so many people. Rich is a true gentlemen and the room wished he and Jacquie luck as her star continues to rise. Upoming Events include the CNBA’s annual Pig Roast, slated for Tuesday, September 9 at Bucks Mill Park. Tickets are $25 for individuals and $200 for a table of 10. This is a wonderful local event attended by local residents as an end of summer party and is always memorable. Tickets are available on the CNBA website www.ColtsNeckBusiness.org. This year, the CNBA is supporting the 7th Annual COLTS NECK ROCKFEST - a family picnic/tailgate event offering music by many local bands, food and crafts. It is being held on September 20, 2014 at Bucks Mill Park. The event is free to attendees of all ages, visit www.sheepherders.com/cnrf/ for event info and official Rockfest merchandise! The Colts Neck Business Association welcomes the public to our General Meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Public Library (1 Winthrop Road - behind Town Hall). The CNBA is led by; President Anna Appolonia of Heritage House Sotheby’s Realtors; Vice Presidents Gregory Calderaro of Morgan Stanley & Carolyn Burtnick of Community Magazine; Secretaries Patty Vollherbst of Colts Neck Computing & Alison Antenucci of Burns Brothers Custom Carpentry; and Treasurer David Sokoler of Merandex Technology Solutions. The group is advised by Past President Glen J. Dalakian. More info can be found at www.ColtsNeckBusiness.org or their Facebook page.

Tips for a Great Parent/Teacher Connection It’s hard to believe we are back in school again! Stocked with new school supplies and back-to-school clothes, we have sent the kids off for another great year. Like many of you, I received my children’s teacher assignments and realized that I don’t know much about these teachers other than the parent word-on-the-street stuff that we often hear. What do you know about your children’s new teachers? What are their goals and objectives for the school year? This year, take the time to get to know them and find a positive and productive way to work together for the benefit of the kids. • Give them the 911 – Write a short note and offer insights about your children to help the teachers understand their likes and dislikes and motivations. • Don’t rush it and let everyone settle in - Allow teachers some time to figure out your kids and learn about their personalities, skills, and needs. • How can you help? - Ask what you can do at home to support what is being done in the classroom both academically as well as behaviorally. • Call, email, or stop by? - Determine appropriate times and ways to contact teachers to discuss both serious issues and get answers to logistical classroom questions. • What are you looking for? - Highlight your goals for the school year. • Prove it - Demonstrate your commitment to the parent-teacher partnership by providing your support at home. From my experience, this is one of the most important aspects of educating your child.

As you settle into this year’s school routine, spend the time to get to know your children’s teachers and partner with them to make this year a true success - your kids are counting on it! Comments or questions? Feel free to call or email Janice at Janice@NeighborhoodLit.com or 732.625.1111. olts Neck based organization Daniela’s Wish held their first annual charity softball game on August 20 at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. Approximately 125 people attended the family-fun event and watched four teams battle it out on the field, starting at 6:15 p.m. Team captain Blake Laurence led the Lomurro, Davison, Eastman & Munoz team; Jennifer Lynn Chlebowski led Heavenly Touch Cosmetics team; Chris Acquaviva led the Acquaviva Enterprises team; and Joe Markulic led the Stafford Tribe team. A fun-family barbecue was part of the festivities and included hamburgers, hot dogs and water supplied by Daniela’s Wish. Chick-fil-A of Freehold was also a part of the barbecue. The kids enjoyed getting a tattoo, having fun on the playground, and getting ice cream from a visiting ice cream truck. Adults had the thrill of meeting and purchasing an autograph for $10 from former New York Giants Stephen Baker – The Touchdown Maker. Grand prize for the winning team included a trophy and a $200 restaurant gift card to Brio Tuscan Grille of Freehold, thanks to the generosity of Brio, who is a strong supporter of Daniela’s Wish. Wells Fargo Bank of Colts Neck joined the event and offered information about their bank to those who attended. All proceeds from this event will benefit Daniela’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded by twelve-year-old Daniela Olt. It is her wish that every child and their family feels safe during times of sadness. For that reason, Daniela’s Wish

n nearly all cases the last issue addressed is the division of the contents of the marital residence. How does a couple divide years – or even decades – worth of accumulated stuff? In other words, how are furniture, appliances, electronics, pots, pans, Tupperware and other minutiae divided? In most cases, by the time negotiations get to this point, the couple is ready to be done and they quickly reach an agreement. This is, however, not always the case.

sold and, thus, all the contents must be removed. An item by item selection can be initiated by the toss of a coin. In some cases the parties prefer to divide personal property on a room by room basis. For example, you take the living room; I’ll take the dining room, etc.

If one party is going to remain in the home and the other is leaving (or has already left), the leaving party can make a list of items he/she wants. The staying party can review the list and check off the items that are acceptable to take and those that are not. This narrows the items in dispute and limits and focuses the negotiation.

Sometimes the distribution of items of significant value winds up in litigation. Who gets the Picasso and who gets the Warhol? How much are they worth and how much are the parties willing to spend to fight over them?

Sometimes the house is going to be

of sale divided. That is usually counter-productive, however. Used furniture and other personal effects generally sell for a fraction of what it will cost to replace them. From a purely economic standpoint, compromising on the division of things almost always makes sense.

CLOSED TRANSACTIONS TO DATE:

In one case several years ago, a judge ordered both parties to prepare a list of the contents. He swore them both in and then went through both lists, item by item, asking each whether he/she wanted a particular item and why. He then awarded the item to one party before going on to the next one. This lasted several hours and probably cost nearly as much as the items about which they were fighting were worth. That is an extreme example. Don’t expect a judge to have the patience or the time to do that in your case. It’s time consuming, expensive and embarrassing. Many years ago, after nearly nine hours of negotiating over personal property, the parties turned to the last two items – a green crockpot and an orange crockpot. One party suggested they each take one. The other wanted both and was prepared to spend as much as a case of crockpots would cost to win. After nearly an hour, the more rational one gave in. In the end, stuff is just stuff.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

The books tell the adventures of Nicky Fifth and T-Bone as they discover all that New Jersey has to offer. The contest rules were to turn three or four paragraphs into a persuasive essay

On July 26, 2014, author Lisa Funari Willever presented

Sarah with a trophy, as well as a $200 Barnes and Noble gift card. Along with these prizes, the author actually created a character named Sarah Cassidy in her newest book, “Nicky Fifth Explores New Jersey’s Great Outdoors.” The character is a tour guide at Cheesequake State Park. Also included in the book are Sarah’s family members and her pet cat Twinkle.

Sarah shared her reaction after learning she had won the contest. “The day my Mom called me down to tell me I won the Grand Prize for Lisa’s contest I was literally jumping for joy! I was so excited that I could barely talk to Lisa on the phone when she called me. I was so excited, happy, and a little curious. It was really cool receiving an award from an author because not many kids get to experience that feeling. It will be a story I will definitely be writing as I start middle school.”

Sarah enjoys writing often and likes to write about past

experiences. “Like the time I got my pet cat Twinkle or my gerbil Squeaks. I will probably keep writing stories but I don’t plan to make it a career. I would like to become a veterinarian when I get older.” In her free time, Sarah likes to read books such as The Sister Grimm Series. One of her hobbies is art and likes to do challenging art pieces.

When asked what advice she would give someone writing an

As Lunch Break prepares for their Fifth Annual Gala, they are announcing an online auction of iconic photographs by famed photographer, Mark Weiss, to benefit their more than 31 years dedicated to helping those community members in need. His photos of Rock & Roll celebrities from the 70's and 80's—all signed by Weiss and his subjects, is known by the campaign name, “Feels Like the First Time,” borrowed from the Foreigner song. These unique limited edition photographs are from the first time Weiss photographed each artist and are hand-picked from his extensive archives spanning over 35 years. The auction will be conducted on Charitybuzz from September 24, 2014 to October 15, 2014. If one goes to www.Charitybuzz.com/LunchBreak, there will be information about the auction and when it goes live. Charitybuzz gives its bidders exclusive opportunities to make a difference and live their dreams through online charity auctions with celebrities and luxury brands. Included in last year’s preGala online auction were photos by Weiss of artists: Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Ozzy Osborne, Debbie Harry of Blondie, and KISS. These photos resulted in a substantial donation to Lunch Break. Weiss explains, “I never imagined when I was 16 and sneaking my camera into concerts that I could make a living out of it, much less help out people in my own hometown by donating the sale of these photos 30 years later. My work as a photographer has been a dream come true, and it’s time to give back.” And, now Weiss is donating these photographs of rock legends to help raise funds for Lunch Break, a cause near and dear to his heart. For more information about the Gala or the auction, please go to www.lunchbreak.org or contact Petra Vanderven at pvanderven@lunchbreak.org or 732.747.8577 ext. 3106. Gwen Love, Executive Director, said, “Many people think Lunch Break is just a soup kitchen, but we are so much more.” Indeed, in 2013 they did serve almost 62,000 hot meals, their food pantry distributed emergency groceries more than 10,000 times, and they have a homebound delivery service for members of the community who are ill or disabled. Lunch Break runs a regular clothing distribution program and a special Suited for Success program where members of the community who are interviewing for jobs, entering the workforce, or attending formal occasions are outfitted, head to toe. Lunch Break hosts social service providers on site to connect their clients with a range of health and social service resources. They also have a school backpack program that distributes school supplies; a Community Gardener’s Market that distributes free community-donated produce; a Lunch

Break Job Board and an Internet Cafe where our guests can research jobs, write resumes, and check their email. There are cooking classes for children, dinner nights for the community at large, Dinner and A Movie Nights monthly for the Boys & Girls Club, a toy distribution program during the holidays, and Lunch Break is an integral part of local disaster relief efforts. These services are free to Lunch Break guests and clients, and are accomplished with a small paid staff supported by more than 2,000 volunteers, as well as the generosity of residents and organizations in the greater Red Bank area and beyond. BREAST HEALTH:

Expert Answers to Your Questions PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH

While many of us know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many women still have unanswered questions about early detection and mammograms. Fortunately, breast experts Sunita Nankoo, M.D., and Catherine Campo, D.O., of the Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital Women’s Centers are here to answer your questions about breast health.

Enrolling Now for For Fall 2014-15

What are my options when it comes to my mammogram? “Digital mammography is considered the standard for mammograms today,” says Dr. Nankoo. “However, both Riverview and Bayshore utilize tomosynthesis, commonly referred to as 3D mammography.” The latest in breast cancer screening, 3D mammography produces three-dimensional images of each individual layer of the breast, making abnormal tissue more visible, and highlighting suspicious masses. Dr. Nankoo explains. “This allows us to more effectively pinpoint the size, shape, and location of any abnormalities.” What are the benefits of receiving a mammogram? “3D mammography is an effective tool to detect breast cancer before lumps can be felt or symptoms appear,” says Dr. Campo. “Early detection of breast cancer not only helps provide a woman with more options, but also increases her chances of having the best possible outcome.” Now, thanks to 3D mammography, radiologists at Riverview and Bayshore can rule out irregularities that would have raised concern in 2D mammograms, reducing the need to call women back for additional imaging. “Now, women can have peace of mind knowing their mammography was as comprehensive as possible,” adds Dr. Campo. What should a woman expect when having a mammogram? Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital have transformed their Centers into a place where women have access to the best health care in a spa-like setting, close to home. Designed by women for women, each Center offers exceptional quality care in an environment of caring. Focused on what our customers deem most important to them, our centers offer the complete health care package. In an environment akin to a spa the Center offers women a one-stop shopping approach to care with fully digital mammography services with CAD technology, a comprehensive array of diagnostic services, access to total breast care through the continuum, as well as evening and weekend hours that will accommodate any lifestyle. To learn more about the Women’s Centers of Bayshore and Riverview, visit riverviewmedicalcenter.com or bayshorehospital. org.

JACQUIE LEE CONCERT BENEFITS UNION BEACH

I

n a special concert billed as, “Two Towns-One VoiceOne Mission,” Colts Neck native Jacquie Lee, who was first runner up on The Voice, performed before an audience of about 800 people. The concert was held at the Robert J. Collins Arena, Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, and will benefit the residents of Union Beach who are still struggling to rebuild following Super Storm Sandy. The concert was hosted by Operation Provide Comfort (OPC), a Colts Neck-based organization that started with a few people but quickly grew to include over 30 Colts Neck residents as well as the support of the Colts Neck Business Association. One of the founding members Glen Dalakian said, “OPC has been there since the beginning. When OPC Founder Lt. Col. James Sfayer, USMC Retired approached me about the concept, we were all still in the throes of helping people recover in the days and weeks immediately following the storm in 2012. We committed to a long-term plan to help our neighbors and have been at it ever since.” Union Beach Administrator Jennifer Maier shared this, “Immediately after Super Storm Sandy hit, Operation Provide Comfort (OPC) was founded by a strong group of Colts Neck residents to assist Union Beach in the recovery process. It is so exciting for Union Beach residents to have Jacquie Lee volunteer her time to perform in order to raise funds for OPC. OPC always asks ‘What do you need now?’ as the needs of Union Beach residents have changed over time from immediate survival to rebuild efforts.

36

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Union Beach is so grateful for OPC and their caring and dedication through this difficult time. Eighty-five percent of our homes were flooded, 300 homes have been demolished. We still have 400 families displaced, and we want to bring them home.” Founder of OPC Lt. Col. James Sfayer, USMC, Ret., explained, “Our focus on helping Union Beach is far from over. With this concert, we hope to raise awareness that there is still so much more to do.” Sfayer said they just found out there are 150 more homes that need to be demolished and the emotional impact that has had on the Union Beach residents has been overwhelming. Sfayer emphasized, “This concert was just the beginning, not the end. We wanted to raise awareness that the rebuilding is not over; that there is still so much more to do, and that the need for funding is still there. We (OPC) won’t go away until Union Beach tells us to go away. We are in this for as long as it takes.” Sfayer said of the concert, “It was a great success. Jacquie Lee presented Union Beach with a check for $30,000 from the concert.” Lee said she couldn’t imagine not having a home to come to. Being able to perform in concert to benefit the many families of Union Beach who are still displaced was important to her. For more information, and to make donations, please visit www.opcunionbeach.org or https://www. facebook.com/OperationProvideComfortUnionBeach.

A check for $30,000 was presented to Union Beach from Operation Provide Comfort's (OPC) "Two Towns-One Voice-One Mission" concert that was held on August 23, 2014 at the Robert J. campfire cocktails

STORY VERONICA HOFFMAN

As the leaves start to fall and the days get a little shorter — we all have that urge to cozy up next to a campfire and enjoy the few fleeting nights we have left where the temperature is just comfortable enough to stay outdoors. Our suggestion? Invite over some good friends, neighbors or your sweetie and warm up with some delicious cocktails and reminisce about the summer!

Below are some recipes to get started, in the spirit of the season. They are sure to warm you up and cozy you in for the fall ahead.

The S’More This cocktail is toasty and delicious, just like the summertime favorite. Garnish with a campfire toasted marshmallow and graham crackers for the full experience.

The Pumpkin Pie This one is a chilled cocktail, but tastes so much like Thanksgiving dinner it’s sure to bring in the season with a delicious and classic bang. My suggestion is to wear your comfiest sweater while enjoying this one!

8oz of Fresh Hot Chocolate

(bonus for one with mini marshmallows!)

10oz of heated apple cider

2oz Marshmallow Flavored Vodka

2 oz of Cinnamon Flavored Whiskey

4oz of pumpkin pie filling

2oz Frangelico

(like Fireball)

4oz whole milk

Toasted Marshmallow and Graham Cracker Crumbs (Optional)

2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

4oz Horchata Flavored Liquor

Whipped Cream

Ice cubes to desired thickness

Ground Cinnamon or Cinnamon Sticks

Whipped Cream, a straw, and nutmeg to garnish

Prepare hot chocolate according to the package instructions. In two mugs and 1 oz each of marshmallow flavored vodka and Frangelico and top with 4oz of prepared hot chocolate. Top with a freshly toasted marshmallow, and sprinkle with ½ tsp of graham cracker crumbs if desired.

38

Hot Apple Cider This is a wonderful classic flavor for the fall season. The sweetness of the apple cider and the warmth of the cinnamon liquor will really put a smile on your face and warm you up just like a seat by the fire.

In each of two mugs add 1oz of Cinnamon Whiskey and 1tsp of vanilla extract, top with 5oz of hot apple cider and whipped cream. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or ground cinnamon and serve immediately.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth (if it becomes too thick add more milk, if it becomes too thin add more ice). Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

LOCAL DAD PUBLISHES A COOKBOOK FOR DIVORCED DADS

I

f you are a divorced father of young children, sharing time with your kids on weekends can be a joy. Except when it’s time to eat. Let’s face it, a lot of men aren’t comfortable in the kitchen and don’t have a lot of experience preparing family meals. So when the kids ask, “What’s for dinner?” many newly single dads resort to fast food and pizza.

Dining out can get expensive. And cheaper options like fast food and takeout aren’t healthy meals for growing kids. That’s why single dad and self-taught cook Ken Lowenstein of Keyport, put together “The Divorced Dads Cookbook,” a collection of easy-to-prepare recipes that are sure to please even the fussiest eaters. “I learned by trial and error,” said Ken. “Eventually, I had some tried and true recipes that my kids and I enjoyed preparing and eating together. We shared a lot of great times together preparing and eating meals, and we have a lot of great memories.” “The Divorced Dad’s Cookbook” blends personal stories about parenting and cooking with practical advice and recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The recipes vary from simple, such as Mac and Cheese, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Tuna Salad, Pancakes to a little more advanced (but still easy) like Sauerbraten, Cedar Plank Salmon and Crab Cakes. “I’ve heard from a lot of single dads who said that the book gave them the courage to try cooking for the first time,” Ken said. “Even if you’re not divorced – or not a dad – this is a handy book for anyone who wants to try to prepare a meal for their family.” Ken Lowenstein lives in Keyport and is a father of two grown kids who still ask him to make some of their favorite meals. When he’s not cooking, he works as a Systems Engineer for a major technology firm and spends weekends teaching soccer to kids for the local parks system.

The “Divorced Dads Cookbook” is available on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble website. For more information, visit the Divorced Dads Cookbook page on Facebook.

CBA Golfer Wins Hole-In-One Contest at The 2014 Colts Neck Fair

PHYSICALLY SPEAKING Therapy Center

Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy

With one hour left to go at the Colts Neck Fair this year, Brendan Clark, a 16-year-old Colts Neck resident, stepped up to the Hole-inOne golf contest sponsored by the Colts Neck Lions Club, picked out a club, placed his ball on the ground and swung. Brendan, a member of the CBA Varsity Golf Team, is very familiar with a golf club but the Hole-In-One challenge is difficult - even for the best golfers. The rules for the contest were simple. Hit (or as golfers say – drive) the ball about 72 yards, over the pond and into the hole and win $1,000. If no one gets a hole-in-one then the closest to the pin (flag stick) is the winner. As Brendan struck the ball it looked good as it took flight. There was hope that it was going to be a good shot. When it settled, a member of the Lions Club measured the ball distance to be 1’8” from the center of the cup. That was the closest to that point and with no others coming closer following Brendan’s drive, he was declared this year’s winner. Brendan was presented with a $250 check at the Colts Neck Lions Club August meeting. Congratulations, Brendan!

WALK THE WALK

STORY SUSAN MURPHY

WITH KEVIN KRET

CONTINUES TO RAISE FUNDS

T

his year’s fifth annual fundraiser, Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret, was held on the evening of August 12 on the track of Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) campus. Although it was a rainy evening, devoted friends and numerous family members of Kevin’s arrived to continue the tradition of this important walk. All donations will go directly to Kevin’s Journey of Hope, and will be used for medical expenses and equipment not covered by insurance.

Kret, a 2008 graduate of CBA, had been a freshman at Villanova University prior to his accident. On July 31, 2009, Kret was skateboarding without his helmet, hit some debris left on the road from the previous night’s storm, and fell hitting his head. He became unconscious and suffered a traumatic brain injury to his brain stem. His close friend Eric Van Schaack, an EMT technician who received the 9-1-1 call, was able to administer immediate medical attention. Kret was taken immediately to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where a neurosurgeon awaited his arrival. His parents Michael and Joan, as well as brother Dylan, 21, and sisters Megan, 19 and Jenny, 17, remain dedicated to Kret’s “Journey of Hope” to consciousness. This year, the theme for the Walk with Kevin fundraiser was “A Long Year”, noted Co-chair of the event

54

Nicole Ardito. She explained that Kret had a serious setback in the spring, which required hospitalization and a ventilator. He is continuing to recover at home. So, this year the Walk with Kevin fundraiser was slightly different. “We wanted to change it up a bit and add something new so we held a bake sale,” said Ardito. Also new and exciting was a visit from New Jersey native Frankie Montecalvo, a professional racecar driver. As one who truly understands the importance of wearing a helmet, Montecalvo shared some of the crashes he has been in where his helmet saved his life. “Frankie walked with us and did a quick question and answer time which was really cool! He also signed autographs.” said Ardito. Soon after Kret’s accident, his mother Joan along with the CYO group from his parish, started a campaign to raise awareness regarding the importance of wearing a helmet for a variety of recreational sports. The Helmets For Life group visits schools and promotes helmet safety through the telling of Kret’s story. Ardito shared what an inspiration the family and community has been. “Despite the weather being an issue, I was really surprised over 150 people came out to support Kevin. And raising over $10,000 in one night alone is something to be proud of! I am really happy to have been Co-chair with by best friend Victoria again! When the walk idea surfaced five

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

years ago, I was a Volunteer. These past three years as Chair of the event has been one of those experiences that I wouldn’t trade for the world. Knowing that I have helped the Kret Family in any way is such an amazing feeling. But over these past five years I have really been able to get to know the family, and to watch their faith get stronger and stronger as the years go by. It’s a sight to see.” Co-Chair Victoria Gemignani added, “It has been a pleasure cochairing the walk with Nicole once again because the Kret family is so loving and strong in their faith. We want to continue to stick by them and support them as Kevin continues his journey to recovery.” Since the accident, monies raised have given the Kret’s the ability to purchase medical equipment and experimental treatments in trial. Some items purchased are exercise equipment to continually maintain Kevin’s muscles, a muscle stimulator to stimulate his muscles, and a cooling system to help regulate Kevin’s body temperature,” explained Ardito. Although the walk had to be moved into the CBA gym due to the rain, Ardito said, “It was a nice change, and we think Kevin enjoyed being back at CBA.” For more information about Kevin Kret, visit Caringbridge.org/visit/ kevinkret.

L.A. DANCE CENTER OF THE ARTS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

OF EXCELLENCE!

W

ho knew 10 years ago that L.A. DANCE CENTER OF THE ARTS would be making a significant mark on the community and creating stars of the future? This September, L.A. DANCE will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary! The L.A. DANCE directors,

classes together and later reunited after college. They worked together at L.A. DANCE in Staten Island, NY for over 15 years. Dreaming of venturing into New Jersey, they finally made that dream a reality in September 2005. They found a great home in the cozy shopping center, Lincroft Commons in the heart of Lincroft. In 2011, Tracey Loiacono was named Artistic Director and her amazing ideas brought dances alive on stage. Her award winning style has been recognized with numerous “Best Choreography” awards in tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary pieces. Debra earned a B.F.A. cum laude in Dance Performance from the City

University of New York, Brooklyn College. She was a student of the highly respected dance program run by Artistic Director, the late June Lewis who was a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company. Debra was chosen to become a member of the repertory dance company, The Brooklyn Dance Theatre. Debra has performed through out the tri-state area giving theatrical dance performances, lecture demonstrations and working with dance companies performing with modern and jazz dance pieces. Her specialty and passion became performing for children at the Williamson Theatre in the famous Wizard of Oz and Peter and the Wolf. She has also worked in television and off Broadway!

including “Top Studio”, “Best Technique” and “Most Entertaining”. They have entered in many categories - including solo, duo, trio and group numbers. Throughout the years, they have earned titles of Miss Petite Starpower, Miss Teen Nexstar and Miss Senior On Stage America! Their students have also received scholarships to train at Broadway Dance Center, NYC to further their education in the dance world.

Topping their success and hard work over the last 10 years, L.A. Dance

Center of the Arts recently won “BIG” at a recent On Stage America Grand Nationals 2014 Dance Competition in Cape May, New Jersey this past July. The production number “Now You See It”, choreographed by Pamela Jacobs & Jeffrey Cilento, won 1st place overall in the Junior Advanced Line/Production

Debra Nicolosi and Angela Paolino-Thompson, met as little girls taking dance

at countless competitions for their above and beyond performances

Angela has been developing dance programs and teaching dance for

Division, the “Diamond Award” for the Highest Scoring Dance of the Junior Division and the Challenge of Champions where the studio won a 6 foot trophy! The routine included several magic tricks with cards, a disappearing door, suspended lights, a reappearing cage and the most famous trick of them all, a girl that levitates in the air! The judges were astonished!!

Over the past 10 years, the studio has proven that it’s not just about

dancing at the studio or the annual dance recital. Ms. Nicolosi has offered an after school dance program for the Lincroft Elementary School providing participating students with a performing arts experience. The L.A. Dance students have given back to the community in many ways with performances at schools, fall festivals, church fairs, senior living centers and charitable events. Danskin, the world’s leading manufacturer of women’s dance and active wear, invited 20 of the L.A. DANCE students to a model photo shoot at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. After a professional hair and make-up session, Danskin provided the students with Danskin dancewear to model for the photographs that are used in Danskin’s newsletters and website. And just this past year, students appeared on the Lifetime channel show “Dance Moms”. Over the years, many L.A. Dance students’ graduates have gone on to be college dance majors, accepted careers as dancers on cruise ships, and performed in music videos.

Hard work, dedication and absolute love for dance is what makes up the

L.A. Dance family. Congratulations to all the L.A. Dancers and success as they begin the 2014-2015 dance season. Through their past, present and future accomplishments, L.A. Dance NJ’s goal is to bring many years of happiness to the lives of their students and their families.

the past 27 years. Dancing since the age of three, Angela trained at the Joffrey School of Ballet, NYU Tisch School of the Performing Arts, Steps and Broadway Dance Center. She is a graduate of NYU Stern School of Business, and has turned her love of dance into an incredible business- L.A. DANCE SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, in Staten Island, NY where the studio just celebrated their 25th year.

L.A. Dance has trained well over 750 students in its short 10 years of

business. The class offerings include all the latest styles for both boys and girls beginning at age 18 months and up. Their motto is CONCEIVE! BELIEVE! ACHIEVE! No matter what the student’s level, each teacher provides excellent training in dance and gives each child a chance to reach their greatest potential. All the L.A. students learn in a positive and caring atmosphere. They have had wonderful opportunities and experiences by performing their annual recitals on a historical stage at the Count Basie Theatre, in Red Bank. It makes them feel special, as if they were performing in a Broadway show!

For their serious dancers, L.A. Dance has a very prestigious competition

team with over 70 members from ages 7-18. They have been acknowledged

More than 38,000 students from over 120 countries participated in the CTY Talent Search; only about 30 percent of the test-takers were honored for their academic performance and potential. The ceremony was held at Rutgers University in late May 2014. Many of the CTY students also qualify for the center’s unique online and summer courses. Grace’s older brother, Christopher, also participated in CTY in 2012, and was honored for his exceptional performance as a middle school student on the college SAT, ACT or similar test. Christopher attended Ranney School from Pre-K through the eighth grade. He received Ranney’s Ann Kappel Memorial Award in 2013 for demonstrating generosity of spirit and devotion to his fellow students. “The CTY awards ceremony congratulates students for their academic achievement, and it recognizes the defining roles that parents, educators, and others play in developing the academic talents of our outstanding honorees,” said Elaine Tuttle Hansen, executive director of CTY, in a press release. “For these advanced learners, as with all children, there should be no gap between their capabilities and the opportunities open to them.”

Why Join a Barter Exchange? Do you wish your business had more customers? Joining a barter exchange could be a great boost to expanding your business growth and increasing market share. The #1 reason a business ought to participate in a barter network is because they want more customers. If your company has capacity to accept additional business, whether it’s an attorney with open billable hours in their day, a hotel with unsold room nights, or open tables at the restaurant, gaining additional market share is the primary purpose and advantage to buy and sell in a barter exchange. If you’ve bartered on your own, you’ll find that belonging to a barter network gives you the chance to make additional exchanges more easily, and allows for more equitable trades, since you get to barter with lots of members in the Network, not just one-on-one. Being active in a barter network gives you a competitive edge. Members patronize participating members, because they save cash when they hire someone in their club. They pay for products and services with barter dollars, and spend their U.S. dollars for mortgage and taxes. When a member joins a barter network, they often receive members-only access to the membership directory, opportunities to attend business networking events with other barter club members, and membership cards to shop. Most barter exchanges offer customer support to market and promote your company. As a barter member generates dollars in this alternative currency, they begin to offset current cash expenses, spending barter dollars instead. Often, new members use their new revenue stream for immediate, ongoing purchases, such as advertising, daycare or water delivery. Others save to pay for a wedding or their child’s orthodontia, and some spend on the pleasures of life, including massage, fine jewelry, limousines, pizza and sushi. Do check references before joining a barter exchange, and make sure they offer a money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied. Faye Alba is the Director of BarterPays!. Chabad’s Open Door Policy Welcomes Everyone In anticipation of the upcoming Jewish New Yearm which will be celebrated from September 24 through September 26, 2014 - the Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel announced its High Holiday Services schedule. They will be “warm, friendly, traditional, and open to all,” says Chabad’s Executive Director, Rabbi Shmaya Galperin.
