Plus: SEPT | OCT NEWSLETTER 2022

Thank you too for all your support, we are proud to be a community-owned business!
Fall is upon us and there is so much to celebrate this season! For starters, it is the 2-year anniversary of our 7th Street location! Time really flies – in the past two years we have grown our employee base to 150 and our local suppliers to 205, with over 1600 unique items available for our customers. We have worked to provide better living wages for our employees. Our recycling programs have helped us decrease our waste. We also increased our sales and our footprint in the community, as we strive to make healthy food more accessible through our pricing initiatives. Your support of the Common Market Co-op helps us to be able to do this important work, so thank and October are shaping up to be exciting months for the Common Market. To celebrate 7th St’s 2-year anniversary, we will be hosting an event on September 16th complete with local vendors, samples, special discounts, raffles, music, and of course housebaked cake! We are also planning a Fall Fest on October 8th in the 7th St. store parking lot. In addition, Owner Appreciation Days (OAD) will take place throughout October at both store locations! We are also thrilled to point out some big wins at our Rt. 85 store. After two great summer events at that location, Loco for Local and our back-to-school Ice Cream Social, the Café is back to serving made to order beverages and sandwiches. The hot bar is serving two soup selections daily and the salad bar is up and running. The Café brings a welcome addition to the store atmosphere!
National Co-op Month is a time to reflect on all the benefits a Co-op brings to their members. When you support your local Co-op, you also support an organization with a unique social vision for economic democracy, a vision for food justice, supporting the local food economy and working toward environmental Fairsustainability.TradeMonth is a time to celebrate how farmers, producers and workers that are associated with these certified products have an equitable trade agreement which improves their lives through fair wages and safe work environments. A few additions to the Co-op that I wanted to call out: We recently opened our own in-house baking facility and are planning to grow production during September- October to better serve our customers. We also will now support Instacart for online shopping/ delivery and have switched to our own WebCart for our curbside service.

October is both National Co-op Month and Fair-Trade Month, two ideas which are really close to our hearts since they are part of who we are and why we come to work every day!
Román Diaz, General Manager Keep it Local,

This season brings a time of change for many households: school years starting, vacation time winding down, hot weather cooling, shorter days, plant/crop growth shifting for another season before the subsequent rest that Winter brings… As we enter this time of transition, we also find ourselves in the season of elections. Our local, state, and national government elections are ramping up, and so are our very own Co-op elections!

So, let’s recap Cooperative Principle #2: When you became an Owner of Common Market Co-op, you also gained the right to vote in your Coop. Cooperatives, by definition, are democratic organizations and Owners have equal voting rights. YOU as a Co-op Owner have a vote in the oversight and governance of YOUR Co-op. This is yet another thing that makes Co-ops great: the concept of One Owner, One Vote. Each of the over 8,000 Owners of The Common Market has a vote in our Co-op. But here’s the thing: many of us don’t use our voice in the Co-op. At the Board level we have frequent conversations about how we might encourage more of our fellow Owners to vote, and truthfully it's always a challenge. This year we are employing an external electronic voting company to handle the election for us. This electronic voting system makes it so easy to cast your vote. By the time you read this, you should already have received your own unique code for voting in the Co-op election. If you haven’t received it, or cannot find it, PLEASE contact Co-op Owner Services and they will be happy to help you get your vote counted. It takes just a few minutes to get to know a little about this year’s candidates and then click to vote. Voting is so easy and fast, and you can complete it from the comfort of your own device, or come in to either store where you will find a voting station where you can cast your vote. We understand everyone is so busy these days; we hope you find this voting experience to be quick and painless. We really want to hear your voice! So much has been said about the importance of voting and the connection to the survival of a successful democracy, but I will leave you with this quote from the late Congressman John Lewis: “The vote is precious. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society, and we must use it.”
I know you will be asked for your vote more than once this coming election season and I encourage you to vote in each and every election where you are eligible to do so. Your vote really can make a difference at every level. I urge you to take just a moment from whatever else your Fall brings to use your voice in our Co-op, our community, and our country.
Yours in Cooperation, Megan Schneebaum, President, The Common Market Board of Directors

On Saturday August 13, as busy parents got ready for an early back to school in Frederick, everyone enjoyed some beautiful weather and a free cup of ice cream from South Mountain Creamery on Common Market’s Rt. 85 patio. Local vendor Naranti Granola, was on hand to provide a delicious crunchy topping along with fresh local berries.
The awesome folks from Mason Dixon BBQ services grilled up a storm of vegan and meat skewers, and the Chicks and Atomic Rooster entertained with a wide range of tunes and a fiddle! Two vendors who grew up together and then lost touch reunited at our event, not realizing that the other had gotten into the healthy food scene! We might love that story the most!! Adopt-a-Road
In Our Community
Ice Cream Social
Our team members hit the streets again in an effort to keep our city clean and beautiful! The City of Frederick Adopt-A-Road program offers local organizations the chance to adopt sections of Frederick City roads for litter cleanup. Give a honk and say "hi!" if you see us on 7th Street between East Street and Taney Ave.
A dollop of whipped cream complements of Common Market’s Private Label milk brand – Natural By Nature – rounded out the perfect sundae! The day was made even sweeter with a generous collection of new shoes for local kids in need through Soles for Love – thanks to all of our awesome customers who contributed! Stuff the Bus
Frederick Pride
Loco for Local On Saturday July 30, as part of Buy Maryland Local Week, nearly 30 local vendors convened on the parking lot of the Rt. 85 store to sample their wares on an unbelievable 85 degree summer day! Customers & Owners loved trying before buying, and Common Market is so grateful for the outpouring of vendor and community support!
Throughout the month of July, both Common Market parking lots housed a yellow school bus, encouraging the donation of school supplies for Frederick County Public School kids from Pre-K to 12th! The Common Market was thrilled to bake house-made cinnamon rolls and scones to nourish the crew of United Way volunteers who made their way around Frederick gathering and sorting all of the supplies before school started. We appreciate the generosity of our shoppers who helped us fill almost 10 carts full of back-packs, note books, pens, pencils, and more!
The Common Market was excited to be back and celebrating Frederick Pride with such a vibrant local community! We hope you were able to pick a sticker or fruit from our booth. We also led a "Healthy Snacks for Teens" program where we made banana boats and got creative seasoning popcorn! As our "All are Welcome" slogan suggests, we at The Common Market celebrate Pride year-round!

5. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out with only moist crumbs attached.

2. In a stand mixer or a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream the butter, then add the brown sugar and beat until fluffy. Scrape the sides of the bowl and beat again to incorporate all the butter thoroughly. Add in the eggs and beat for 1 minute.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Measure the yogurt and stout and reserve.
4. Beat the flour mixture into the butter mixture, then scrape down, beat briefly, then add the yogurt and beat to mix. Add the stout last, beating to incorporate, scraping down and mixing one last time for a smooth batter.

6. Let the cake cool completely on a rack. Serve squares of cake with lightly sweetened whipped cream. Dark beers like porter or stout are rich with the flavors of chocolate, coffee and caramel, making them an ideal ingredient to enhance baked goods. The beer’s bitter notes are balanced by the sweetness of this chocolate cake.
Servings: 12. Prep time: 1 hour; 15 minutes active. 1 stick butter, softened 1 1⁄2 cups light brown sugar 2 large eggs 2 cups flour 3⁄4 cup cocoa 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 3⁄4 cup plain yogurt 1 cup stout beer

2 teaspoons ground cumin
1. Preheat the oven to 300° F and adjust the racks so you can fit a Dutch oven with the lid on. If desired, trim some of the fat from the outside of the roast (the liquids will be used for the sauce, so all the rendered fat will be in the dish). The pork should fit in a large Dutch oven; if necessary, cut to fit.

Lorem Ipsum | The Newsletter of Your Co+op 4Fall 2022
1 teaspoon salt
2. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, salt, smoked paprika and cumin. Rub all over the pork.
3. Place the Dutch oven over medium-high heat and let heat for several seconds before drizzling in the oil. Let the oil heat for a few seconds and then place the pork in the pan. Let it brown for about two minutes before turning carefully to brown all sides. When the pork is browned, pour in the lager or apple juice. Stand back to avoid the steam and fat spatters that the liquid will create when added to the Dutch oven.
5. Remove from the oven and transfer the cooked pork to a large bowl to cool, leaving the liquids in the Dutch oven.
4. Cover the Dutch oven, place in the preheated oven and set a timer for 3 hours. After 3 hours, uncover the pan and use tongs to turn the pork over. Return to the oven for 1 hour, until the meat is easily pierced with a knife and some browned edges are visible.
6. In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce, then stir them into the liquid in the Dutch oven. Turn the burner to medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring, then reduce the heat to keep the liquids simmering. Cook, stirring frequently for 10 to 15 minutes to thicken the sauce. Remove from heat.
7. When the pork is cool enough to handle, use two forks to shred the meat.
8. Stir the cooked meat into the sauce to mix and heat through.

9. Serve the pulled pork on buns with fixings, such as bread and butter pickles, sliced sweet onions and pickled sweet or hot peppers, if desired.

The pawpaw is a cousin to the custard apple and cherimoya, the only member of the tropical sugar apple family living in the temperate north. Basically, the pawpaw is a tropical fruit tree that hitchhiked its way north as the continental glaciers receded at the end of the Ice Age.
• Full of vital vitamins and minerals, exceeding peaches, grapes and apples. It is exceptionally high in potassium, calcium, vitamin C, niacin, phosphorus, iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium.
• High in antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids.

PAW PAW N’ICE CREAM
Yield: Four 1/2-cup servings
Ingredients: 1 large frozen sliced banana (~1 cup) 1 frozen pawpaw (~1 cup pulp), peeled and seeded 1/4 cup light coconut milk
The pawpaw is now found growing indigenously, primarily throughout the eastern United States and very southeastern part of Ontario.
2. Eat as soft serve right away or freeze to make a scoopable dessert.
3. Top with toasted coconut.
A food processor should be used; a blender is usually not powerful enough. Can't find paw paws? Try substituting papaya, mango, or persimmons!
The fruit of the pawpaw tree is intensely satisfying and nutritious. The creamy, rich pulp has tropical flavors reminiscent of mango, pineapple, and banana that combine together to create a satisfying dessert.

Knowledgeable, helpful staff, a mission I believe in, great product selection. My favorite place to shop for groceries. L. Absolutely amazing selection, friendly staff, really high quality products, never seen this many vegan options in one grocery store. Also lots of great non vegan stuff. Lots of local products, minority owned companies, and those are labeled and highlighted in aisles. C.
